Don't halfass the job
Dedicated to The_cat_dragon
Happy birthday!!!
Jack's knuckles were white from how tight he was holding on to the controllers of the ship. He was almost afraid to ask. "How is Danny?"
In the back all the students were huddled around something.
Right under the broken window and sprawled on the seats was Danny.
They couldn't see his face (thankfully). Only his back. And it was horrible.
The boy wasn't moving. His skin had lost all color and was wrinkled. His hair looked dry and hung from his head in chunks. No more whisps of energy could be seen leaving his body but he was slightly glowing.
But that wasn't the worst part. The worst part was that Danny flickered. He seemed to disappear briefly from time to time. As if his whole existence was being sucked out of him.
Deadly silence reigned.
Then Sam kneeled by him. She reached out to touch him but he flickered and her hand went right through. She looked shocked as a tear went down her face.
Tucker turned to Maddie in panic. "We need to get him out of here now!!"
Jack shouted from the cockpit: "We can't yet. We're still too close to the prison."
The humans were panicking. For all they knew, there could be a dead body right in front of them.
Mr. Lancer crouched down too and looked for a breath. The chest didn't move. His pained expression said it all.
Screams and yells were heard.
Sam sprung up. "There's still time. We just have to stop the filters now."
Kwan waved his hands around. "Maybe we can put him in an isolated box?"
Mikey turned to Maddie. "The thermos. Is it isolated."
Maddie's eyes lit up. "Who has the thermos."
Everyone frantically searched their bodies for the ghost cup.
Nathan held it up. "Here it is!!" He chucked it to Tucker who quickly opened it. He turned to Danny. "I hope this works," he muttered and directed the opening to the halfghost.
Sam looked on heartbroken as Danny's body slipped into the thermos easily.
Tucker capped it and made sure it was shut tight. "Alright where do we land."
Jack didn't respond. His eyes went left and right looking for a safe enough island. He wasn't about to make the same mistake twice.
The ship stayed in deadly silence as the ship flew around.
Tucker held the thermos tightly and close to his chest. Don't worry, dude. We'll get you fixed up.
Finally the ship slowed down. The humans waited with bathed breath as the machine 'landed' and stopped moving.
The door slid open as if in slow motion compared to the rush of students that got out.
Tucker landed on the grass and ran as far away from the evil vehicle.
The others ran after him not even bothering to close the ship. What ghost would steal it anyways.
Tucker kneeled on the ground and uncapped the thermos. He pressed the release button and a ray of light illuminated the dark place. Then it stopped and in its place lay the halfa.
Gasps were heard and Andrew left to barf. Paulina sat in front of Star, who lay on the ground. She had a concussion and should stay in the ship but she wanted to see what would happen.
Sam broke down. She sniffed as she saw her best friend so helpless on the ground. Don't die, Danny. Don't leave me.
Tucker sat next to her. He almost threw up at the sight but he held strong. He put a hand on Sam's shoulder. She looked up tearstained.
"Sam. Think. What can we do?"
She sniffed but wiped her face. "It's almost like he is melting."
Tucker nodded.
Mikey shuffled. "Don't you have something for ghosts. To like cure them?" He asked the Fentons.
The shook their heads regretfully but Sam's head snapped up. She looked at Tucker and he frowned. Then his eyes widened. "The Ecto-Dejecto."
Jack frowned. "But that is bad for ghosts."
Tucker sprang up but Sam pulled at his arm. "I'm faster." She went off to the ship.
Maddie crouched next to Tucker. "What will Ecto-Dejecto do for him? It will harm him more."
Tucker shook his head. "We found out it stabilizes ghosts. You do have a bit of that in the ship right?"
Maddie nodded. "Jack wanted to bring it to...." She couldn't finish that sentence.
After a few long and agonizing minutes Sam came running up. A jar with glowing green liquid in one hand. A needle in the other.
Tucker winced and scooted a bit away. Sam plopped down. "Do you think it'll be enough?"
Tucker pursed his lips. "What else can we do?"
The goth didn't say anything but dug out something from her pocket. She opened her hand to show five black pills.
Tucker blanched. "You kept them?!"
Sam felt inclined to roll her eyes. "Of course I did. You and I know of all the trouble Danny can get himself in." She proceeded to open the jar and drop three pills in it. Tucker waved his hands frantically. "That's too much!!"
Sam waited as the pills disintegrated and mixed with the liquid inside. "He needs a lot, Tucker." She submerged the tip of the needle in and sucked the liquid.
The other humans' eyes widened. What was she going to do?
Sam put the jar down and took a deep breath. Please let this work.
Maddie took a step forward. "Are you sure this is-"
She was cut off by Sam's hand reaching out and sliding the needle in Danny's arm. Thankfully it didn't go through. She pushed the liquid in Danny's body and slid it out.
Then she took a step back.
They could follow the liquid's path through the boy's veins.
Richard blinked. "Whoa."
Soon Danny was covered in black stripes. He started glowing green.
"Don't tell me he's gonna float and throw sparkles an turn into a blond barbie princess," Dash muttered.
Danny's body started healing. His flesh became fuller. His hair returned to its former color and seemed even healthier.
Tucker and Sam gasped as the aura Danny only has in ghost form appeared now in his human form.
The boy gave off waves of power as his aura strengthened. His body lifted off the ground as his aura contradicted the island's aura. It got so bright the humans had to squint but no one dared to look away.
Finally the glow lessened and Danny stayed bobbing up an down one meter from the ground.
They held their breath as they waited for any sign of life.
Danny blinked. He frowned at the green sky. Where am I?
Suddenly he heard cheers.
He looked at his side and was shocked to see his fellow peers, parents and teacher grinning at the halfa in relief.
"Wha-?" Danny flailed mid air. Why am I floating. Why do I feel so energetic. "What happened? Why am I floating....Walker!!! Where's Walker?"
Suddenly someone enveloped him in a hug. Then two. Next thing he knew he was being tackled in the air. Pushed to the ground by the weight.
Dash and Kwan yelled as they fell on the pile. The rest groaned. Richard stood at the top with his hands on his hips victoriously.
Danny groaned from the bottom. "Is this really necessary?" He stuck a hand out and worked on dragging himself out. "Guys common."
Maddie and Mr. Lancer stood at the side.
The female ghost hunter had let go of the hug as soon as she saw what was gonna happen. Her husband had joined in merrily.
Mr. Lancer started pulling the laughing students off. "Give the kid some space."
Eventually they complied and stood up. Others phased out.
Finally Danny was the only thing left on the ground. He rubbed his head grinning, even though it hadn't hurt at all. "Alright. Can anyone explain what the heck is happening?" His eyes widened as he caught a glimpse of his glowing hand. He looked up cautiously.
Sam nodded. Her face still covered in tears but they were joyful tears this time. She wiped them off. "They know."
Danny took a step back. "They- they do?"
"They know you're halfghost and have ghost powers."
Danny blinked. So they didn't know he was Phantom. He guessed that was true. They wouldn't have been standing there, smiling.
He pushed that thought away and inspected the faces of his classmates. They seemed ok with it. As if they had gotten used to the idea.
Danny moved to sit down but instead his body went floating. "Whoa. No." He was grateful to notice that he didn't float higher than one meter. When he was able to 'sit' comfortably he turned to the others. "Alright." Suddenly he was ripped out of the air.
Danny yelled as a big force jumped on him. Then something made him wet. He laughed as Leroy's tongue covered every inch of his body. "No- stop. Yield boy. Haha. No!!"
The humans laughed as they looked on the over happy monster lick its master.
"I assume Billy is fine now?" Amorpho landed and morphed into the original. He seemed happy to see Danny.
Said boy finally pushed Leroy off and wiped the saliva off. He looked at Amorpho. "Amorpho? What are you doing here?! Can anyone please just tell me what is going on?!!"
Sam laughed, which caught many off guard. First the goth is crying, next thing they know she's laughing. But who could blame her. Those where some very emotional ten minutes.
"We'll tell you so you don't get a panic attack. But first, get all that slimy stuff off of you."
Danny looked down. "But you know it doesn't come off."
Andrew rolled his eyes. "Phase out."
"Oh right." He turned intangible an the saliva fell. Danny sat in the air again. Leroy curled around him.
The others sat themselves down and Danny noticed all the scratches and bruises everyone sported. He pursed his lips.
Chelsea started the story.
They told him everything. The capture, the cells, the interrogation.
Kim, Chelsea and Tucker told about their planning. Jack would jump in at times. Amorpho explained how they put it in action.
The other explained what had happened in their cell and so everyone exchanged stories.
Danny was surprised at the information. He congratulated them on their accomplishments and laughed at the end. "Whoa. You guys had quiet an adventure."
Sam sighed. "We thought you died."
Danny smiled reassuringly. "Wouldn't want to halfass the job."
That got some laughing.
Nathan yawned.
Maddie checked her watch. "It's seven pm. Time to eat and then we can sleep. It has been an eventful day."
Maddie and Jack left and brought back food. Others joined in to help after Mr. Lancer's command.
Amorpho had a little chat with Danny before he bid his goodbyes. After all. He was a free ghost now. And he had places to be.
After everyone had eaten, including Danny, it was time to sleep.
Danny stood there awkwardly as the others walked towards the ship. He pulled at Tucker's arm. "Hey bro. Can you bring my stuff here? I'm just going to sleep outside." Tucker nodded and raced inside.
He came out with his hands full. Not only with Danny's stuff but also his own. Sam followed behind with her backpack and sheets.
Danny frowned. "What are you doing?"
Sam rolled her eyes as she let it plop on the ground. "We're camping with you of course."
Danny smiled brightly. He pumped his fist. "Yes!"
Tucker laughed. "You didn't think we would leave our halfdead dude outside alone, did you?"
Valerie appeared next to them. "You guys aren't doing a sleepover without me, are you?"
Maddie looked on. She turned to her husband and he grinned. He held up sheets. She smiled. "Hey kids? We will sleep outside and you are welcome to join us if you want."
There was an immediate reaction from Richard, Chelsea and the jocks. They raced outside to pick the best spots. Melissa followed much more calmly. She wouldn't leave Danny outside. Kim sighed and followed. Nathan tried to sit next to Valerie. Sheldon grinned as he stumbled out. Andrew rolled his eyes but followed. Mikey was already sitting close to Danny.
The only people left in the ship were Star and Paulina.
They glanced at each other, then at the empty ship.
Star sighed. "Might as well."
They looked at the beds longingly before slowly stepping out. Star was still careful of her head.
After much shuffling around and fighting over spots, everyone finally settled down. Spread out across the island.
It was a slightly large island but seemed deserted. A few trees and bushes here and there but was mostly empty.
Danny looked up at the green swirls of the Ghost Zone. He was so full of energy he didn't think he'd be able to fall asleep.
But eventually, the snores of other students and the soft body of Leroy lulled him to sleep.
The last thing he heard was the beep of the ship clicking shut before he drifted away.
