Prologue

"WHAT IS THIS?!" Polar demanded, tail lashing angrily.

"It's an egg," replied Scorpion, with a shrug. He glanced down at the pale blue egg with light tan mottling it, and nudged it with a talon.

"I KNOW IT'S AN EGG. I WANT TO KNOW HOW IT CAME TO BE! YOU SAID--"Polar bellowed at the SandWing, but was cut off.

"I know what I said," Scorpion interjected calmly, tail swishing lazily. "However, I also told you, 'No promises', and you were fine with it."

Polar was highly convinced he did not say that, but she dismissed it. "We need to get rid of it," she snarled. Scorpion tilted his head at her curiously.

"Do we?" he questioned, mouth opening in a yawn, black tongue uncurling.

"YES!" she growled, blue eyes flashing as she shoved her face towards his, staring him dead in the eyes. "I am not going to have a 'funny IceWing looking thing' running around. Do you know how humiliating that would be?!"

The SandWing paused, thinking. "Nope," he finally concluded. "However, you could just make it unhumiliating," he suggested with a shrug.

Polar stared at him icily. "How? My tribe doesn't exactly accept hybrids," she hissed. "You keep it in your tribe. Your princess, is, after all, a hybrid."

Scorpion shook his head, earring glinting. "No can do, P.  You see, there's this thing called disappointment--" He was cut off by an enraged IceWing.

"DISAPPOINTMENT?! You're talking to me about disappointment?!" Polar laughed in disbelief. Polar bears and penguins, this SandWing was dumb.

"What?" Scorpion asked, confused. His tail twitched as he snapped at a rogue fly that buzzed around his head.

"I'm going to be demoted to the Seventh Circle, if I don't get cast out....or die," Polar muttered under her breath.

"Sorry, I didn't catch that," Scorpion said.

The IceWing snarled at him, curling her lips to reveal shining fangs. "You weren't supposed to."

The SandWing backed up a couple of steps. He knew IceWings were temperamental, but Polar was in an entirely different league. She'd changed so much. What in Pyrrhia had he seen in her in the first place?"You have to take the egg, P. I can't," he told her.

"Have to? No dragon says I have to. And can't? Or won't?" Polar asked, irritated. An eyebrow arced upwards and her tail twitched, but that was all the more she gave, signaling she was upset. She clawed at the dry sand with disgust, her dismay so clearly evident.

"Of course you don't have to. And both," Scorpion replied with a shrug. He didn't catch the frosty glare Polar sent him.

"Some father you'll turn out to be," Polar grumbled under her breath. Scorpion turned to face her.

"You know what to do with the egg?" he asked. Polar grinned toothily, but it wasn't a happy smile. It was completely different.

"Of course I do," she replied smoothly. With a curt nod farewell, she turned and leapt off the shifting sands, flying back north to the lands of ice and snow.
