#27 Long, Long, Long Walk
(A/N So, while I'm at a speech competition, I realized that I had not posted a chapter his morning in my dash out of house at 5 in the morning......... here it is?)
(Vikk's POV)
"Who the hell taught you how to use your powers!?", I scold Mitch. He's leaning over a bush, throwing up the lunch I had caught us only hours earlier. He gags again before replying, "Who do you know that could of *gag* taught you". "I'm smart enough to teach myself. No more powers today", I snap back. "Ugh....", he groans, joining me back on the trail to the next village. I figured that we would go from village to village on our way to the capital. I can grab some supplies, and it's been a while since I've heard any news on the kingdom.
"Quick question; how are you planning not to be recognized? You are GoldenEye's most wanted thief", Mitch says. "I haven't escaped capture just from luck, Mitch. No one's seen my face. I'm only recognizable from my black cloak, and..... how short I am", I mumble the last part. Mitch chuckles, and I elbow him the gut. "Give me a minute", I say, taking off my backpack while he's still doubled over. I unclip the cloak from around my neck and stuff it into the bag. I then pull out a blue sweater with a red diamond. It's soft and feels very welcoming to my cold skin. It's a little too big and the sleeves cover my hands. "Well, you definitely look harmless. Like a puppy with booties", Mitch teases me. "Shut up", I growl.
(Time skip)
"Now I don't want you to freak out, but I have some friends here that work at the pub", I explain to Mitch, "They don't know what happened at the lab, they just think I'm a run away orphan that's somehow managed to survive childhood". "I've never been in a pub. My parents didn't want me to drink and possibly hurt someone", Mitch mumbles. "I don't drink. I gather gossip", I reply, shoving open the wooden doors.
The inside of the building smells like a rotting cow. Mitch half chokes behind me. Lots of people sit at tables playing cards and sipping their drinks. I make sure not to meet anyone's eyes on my way up to the bar. I've been here enough times that they recognize me, but Mitch is new. Not a lot of travelers ever come this way except for me. "Sit at the bar and don't do anything stupid", I whisper to Mitch. He grunts and sits on a stool next to me when we get up to the front. The chatter quickly regains its usual loudness as everyone starts to ignores us.
"Vikk! I see that you haven't become wolf food just yet", the bartender laughs, walking over to us. "Good to see you Simon! Your dad is still making you work here? Where's Tobi and Josh?", I ask Simon. "They'er out running some errands while I'm stuck here. What brings you here? I've never seen you travel with anyone before", Simon says, raising an eyebrow at Mitch. "This is Mitch. You could call him an old childhood friend of mine. He's heading up the capital, and I decided to join him", I lie. "It's nice to meet you", Mitch smiles, offering his hand to Simon. "I'm Simon, if you couldn't already tell", he laughs, "But you're going to the capital? We had someone visit some family there a while ago, and they said that there's something wrong up there". "What do you mean?", I ask him.
"Just lots of mistrust and arguments. That kind of stuff. There's something bad going on, and it's making people uneasy. No one has any clue what, though. I think it's from how children kept going missing for those few years, and then stopped. Everyone is glad that it stopped, but they're scared about why. It's like bad vibe in the air", Simon rambles, trying to explain the best he can. He doesn't even know the half of it. Mitch uneasily shifts in his chair next me. "Strange", is all I end up saying in response.
"Should I be concerned about that?", Mitch suddenly speaks up. He tilts is head slightly over to the the left, indicating a table in the corner of the pub. An older man sits there, staring at Mitch in an almost puzzled way. "What's up with him?", I ask Simon in confusion. I now watch the guy from the corner of my eye. Simon doesn't answer right away, also looking at Mitch. "Turn your head to the right a bit", he says. Mitch obeys, revealing a small scar under his chin. "Look up behind me at posters", Simon says next. I recognize his tone of voice. He's trying to act natural as he turns away to 'get us a drink'. I skip over my own wanted poster and scan the others. Mitch shivers beside me when we find a missing poster of him. It's done in great detail, with the thin scar showing. "Crap. My parents are looking for me", Mitch mutters. A high reward is listed for his safe return at the bottom.
Simon comes back with empty glasses. "You guys should leave while you still can", he mumbles, "Where ever you came from, Mitch, they want you back". I nod and stand up, Mitch doing the same. "Thank you, Simon. You really are the best friend a guy could have", I say. His gaze softens. "I trust you, Vikk. I know you're a good person. I just hope that one day you'll trust me too", he winks. "Why am I not surprised?", I deadpan, smirking. Mitch kinda nervously half chuckles as the guy stands up to follow us. Mitch follows uneasily beside me as we walk out the door. The man follows right behind us, but we're gone before he even gets outside.
