Chapter 6: Burglars
Blue shuffled the thin blanket around. For some reason she just couldn't get to sleep. It was probably about 2 in the morning but she couldn't tell. It wasn't like she had a clock.
Suddenly there was a sharp rattling noise. Blue leapt out of bed, heart pounding. There was a clunk, a slow grinding screech and a click before absolute silence. Then she heard voices downstairs. Whose were they?
Slowly, Blue reached out a cautious foot. There was an eerie creak as she stepped onto the floorboards. Blue froze. Her heart was beating so hard she was sure whoever was downstairs could hear it. Were they burglars? She didn't know.
Blue looked down at the floor. "Idiot." She whispered to herself. "You know this floorboard creaks." Careful not to tread on any more loud parts of the floor, she made her way over to her drawers. She quietly rummaged through each one, but began to panic as she did so. The voices were getting louder and there were sounds of shelves opening and doors closing.
Finally, Blue found what she was looking for. An ancient wind-up torch and a broken phone (a ridiculously old Nokia). She raced downstairs, burst into the living room and held up the torch to the intruders.
"Get back or I'll phone the p..."
She stopped suddenly because the three people who were staring at her weren't thieves or burglars, but three slightly shocked looking children no older than herself.
"What the heck are you doing in my house?"
The youngest child was looking at her with a nervous look on her face.
"I.. w.. we..." she began to stutter but one of the two boys interrupted her.
"Do you live here?"
"Yeah! Obviously!"
"No you don't."
"What the - yes I do!" Replied Blue indignantly. "Of course I do! How would you know anyway?"
"It doesn't make any sense..." murmured the eldest boy to himself, speaking for the first time. "How can the Yellow Submarine be wrong? It can't... it can't!"
Something stirred in Blue's brain. "Yellow Submarine? That's a Beatles album isn't it? What are you on about? Who are you?" The eldest boy grinned apologetically.
"Sorry. I'm Finn." He held out his hand and Blue shook it hesitantly. "This is Roger." He gestured towards the smaller boy. "And this... is Emily." He turned to point out the youngest of the trio, the only girl.
"Right." Answered Blue. She still hadn't quite got over the fact that three weirdly dressed kids had got into the locked house and were acting as if it were perfectly normal. "Erm... I hope you don't mind me asking, but what are you actually doing here?"
Finn sighed. This was going to take a lot of explaining.
