Chapter 5: Where the Beatles are
Groaning, Roger opened his eyes. It took him a few seconds to realise where he was. He looked around as his eyes adjusted to the gloom. To his horror, Finn and Emily were lying on the floor, apparently unconscious.
"Finn! Emily!" He shouted loudly and rushed over to them. Finn opened his eyes abruptly looking slightly dazed and Emily gave a little moan and sat up. To Roger's delight, all three of them appeared to be Ok.
They all stood up and went over to the control panel. All the glowing screens and dials were dark, as was the inside of the submarine. Peering out of the porthole it was pitch black too. Angrily, Roger thumped the panels and to his surprise one screen flickered on hesitantly.
"What the?" Smoothly, a small cover slid back revealing a tiny hole, similar to one you would find in a piggy-bank. With a loud bleeeeeeeeeeeeep a long, thin piece of paper began to dispense out of the hole. It had words printed on it.
"Well go on." Prompted Emily. "See what it says." Hesitantly, Roger picked it up. Finn read it out loud.
"The Beates are near."
"What the heck is that meant to mean?" Grumbled Roger. "Where? And you do know you made a spelling mistake? It's supposed to say Beatles not Beates." In reply, there was another bleeeeeeep and another tiny bit of paper came out.
"Oops. Sorry."
This was followed by:
"In the house"
"Go on! Tell us more! Which house? Where?"
"Number 9"
"What the..." started Roger but Finn interrupted. "Number 9? The Beatles are in house number 9? Can you tell us more?"
"That is all"
Aggressively, Roger thumped it again. "That can't be all! How do we get to the house? Where are we? How do we get back to Pepperland? How do we charge you up?"
The submarine gave a rumble, and another bit of paper began to appear. Instead of a bleep there was a kind of jagged, strained sound as if the mechanism was having trouble printing. Blee-EE-cruNEEEEEP
A tiny blank piece of paper dropped out and a flickering message appeared on a screen. "Power supply lost" Finn read, before the screens went dark and they were left in pitch blackness again.
"Well. We'd better go see what it means then." Mumbled Emily from the darkness and the three of them stumbled across to the exit of the submarine.
As soon as they left the submarine, a yellow glow from a streetlight hit them. The door slammed behind them and Emily gave a gasp when she turned around. In the place where the Yellow Submarine should have been there was a perfectly normal, silver car.
Emily ran over and flung the car door open. When she peered inside she was looking around the interior of the submarine. All the dials and knobs and panels were there, as was everything else. But from the outside it was just a normal Vauxhall. It even looked normal if you peered through the car windows.
Finn circled the car and was satisfied. "So the disguise button does work after all. This is great! An outsider would never guess... it blends in perfectly with the other vehicles! The Flying Glove will have no idea!"
"Yeah." Replied Roger before making off towards the houses. But he stopped suddenly and looked hard at an upstairs window. "What is it?" Asked Finn.
"I've just seen a face." Replied Roger and continued his fixed stare at the window. "I think someone's seen us."
"Maybe it was one of the Beatles?"
"I don't think so. It looked like a
girl to me." Replied Roger and walked up to the house. He read the brass number on the door. "It's number 9. This is house number 9. This is where the Beatles are."
