Chapter 36: The End

The multitude of monsters was approaching rapidly, lead by Lord Indigo, who was fuming at his previous defeat. The group consisted of an immense combination of Meanies - Snapping Turtle Turks, Apple Bonkers, Countdown Clowns... but the fiercest of them all was Lord Indigo's most prized warrior. The Terrible Flying Glove zoomed over the heads of the advancing monsters, leaving a trail of thick yellow and red smoke.

"Come here Glovey!" Commanded Lord Ingido, and stroked the head of his beloved pet. "We are going to DESTROY those Pepperlandians, aren't we Glovey?" In response, the Glove uttered a deep growl and took off, ecstatic at the prospect of fighting more innocent people. "Off you go, Glovey." Snarled Lord Indigo, "Lead the way and show those idiots what we're made of! GO, GO, GO!"

The Glove rushed ahead, imagining the battlefield. This was going to be a lot of fun.

The Pepperlandians advanced. With every step, they came closer to the mass of monsters, until they were only around 100 metres away. Lord Indigo spat harshly at the rebels, "You will be defeated! What's the point of even trying? You can't win!" The crowd simply booed a simultaneous surge of anger and disagreement, making Lord Indigo go bright red in anger. He shook, fuming, and called out to his beloved Glove, "Oh, Glovey! Come here, Glovey! Those naughty little rebels refuse to surrender... take the Countdown Clowns and DESTROY THEM! EXPLODE THEM! EXTERMINATE THEM!"

The Countdown Clowns rushed menacingly towards the Pepperlandians, the Glove in their midst. "NOW!" Shouted Roger, and the twenty-seven people in the crowd that were carrying buttons pressed them quickly and rapidly. Countdown Clowns began to blow up, the ones towards the back of the group exploded sending other Meanies flying into the air, and many Clowns detonated right next to the Flying Glove and sent it falling to the ground in a crumpled heap.

Jeremy, as directed, rushed towards the unconscious Glove and started to perform his poetry on it.

"NO!" Screamed Lord Indigo, watching as his bravest warrior began to sprout a floral pattern on its dark blue fabric. "MEANIES! ATTACK!"

There was a terrifying roar like the sound of a volcano erupting and the thunder of thousands of heavy feet racing across the hard ground."

"COME ON PEPPERLAND!" Shouted Finn, "ADVANCE!"

There was the clash of metal upon Snapping Turtle Turk pincers, and the battle had begun.

"Watch out!" Shouted Roger in alarm, as he spotted Emily who was defending herself against a group of Bonkers being snuck up upon by a hideously overweight Butterfly Stomper. He ran towards her and brought his guitar down on the beast's monstrous little head, knocking it unconscious.

"GLOVE!" He shouted, "GET OVER HERE!"

After Jeremy had soothed the Glove, it had grown an array of beautiful flowers that almost hid its blueness. It had also decided that helping the Pepperlandians was the right thing to do and was now flying around knocking over Apple Bonkers like a game of bowling. Jeremy was perhaps the busiest creature on the battlefield, he was always winding his way between different Meanies and giving them some of his magic treatment. It was clear which way the battle was going.

"TRAITORS! FOOLS! CRIMINALS!" Screamed Lord Indigo, frothing madly at the mouth. He ran straight for the Boob, knocking over anything in his path (which was mostly his own soldiers anyway).

"GET HIM!" Shouted Roger, as he spotted the hideous Blue Meanie heading straight for them. He spotted Fred, Finn, Blue, Emily and Jeremy race towards him, and for a second he felt strangely proud of what an odd-looking group they were. An old hero, a normal girl from a normal world, a Nowhere Man and three siblings fighting to regain their home. A group of Pepperlandians pulled out instruments and started to play a sweet melody, making Lord Indigo wince. But it wasn't quite enough. Roger and his companions then pulled out their instruments too, and Jeremy started to recite some poetry:

"Stop! Stop! Stop for me!

Give a little love, and then you'll see

Love will end, I do decree

When an apple grows on a mango tree,

On the 30th of February!"

A combination of this poem and the Pepperlandian's music caused Lord Indigo to fall down on his knees, shaking. Roger advanced towards him, waving his sword, all set to decapitate the vicious monster. But his brother and Old Fred both tried to stop him.

"Don't do it." Said Old Fred sternly, "As I Blue before, it's not knowing when to take a life that counts, it's knowing when to spare one."

Roger, rather reluctantly, sheathed his sword and stepped backwards. He watched as Jeremy tapped the shaking Meanie. The whole battlefield held its breath as he stopped shivering, and an elegant rose started to bloom from his blue fur. Then, he stood up and grabbed Jeremy.

Angrily, Finn drew his sword and started to move towards them when Lord Indigo pulled the Boob into a tight hug. The Meanies all around went into a mad panic, both the Glove and their leader had been defeated.

"Meanies!" Shouted Roger above the chaos. "We give you an offering of peace! Will you join forces with us?"

The monsters discussed amongst themselves and nodded. If they didn't accept they would probably end up dead anyway. "Good." Said Roger, "Now Jeremy, give them all a nice handshake, won't you?"

Jeremy grinned and hopped towards the Meanies. "Thank you!" He exclaimed, shaking the pincer of an irritated Snapping Turtle Turk, which straight way turned bright pink. He leapt around, joyfully greeting every single Meanie until they were all covered in either flowers or bright colourful patterns.

Then, as the last few Meanies met their last few seconds of Meanie-ness, the colour started to flood back into Pepperland. It started with the clouds, that went from a dull greyscale pattern to bright stripes of every imaginable colour, and more. Then, the colour spread into the rest of the sky, which turned the most beautiful shade of pastel blue. When the sky touched the grass on the horizon, the vegetation returned to lush emerald green and the smell of nectar and fresh grass blew in on the breeze. It was incredible. Blue inhaled deeply, and sneezed on some pollen. Already there were birds singing in the sky and butterflies emerging from secret hiding places.

She turned to see Finn, Roger and Emily wrapped in a tight hug, and for a second she felt a drop of loneliness in the ocean of happiness that she was feeling. Finn seemed to notice this and looked up. He beckoned her over and pulled her into the group, and the loneliness was gone as quickly as it had arrived.

Suddenly she started to cry, sobbing loudly.

"What's wrong?" Asked Emily, concerned. Blue sniffed. "It's just... I need to go back home... And I'll never see you again..." Tears cascaded down her face.

"What are you talking about Blue?" Asked Roger, slightly startled. "You do t have to go anywhere! Stay here, with us! I mean... Look at this place!" He gestured towards the vibrant plants and all the wonderful life that was surrounding them. "Who in their right mind would want to leave?"

"You mean," Sniffed Blue, "You'd let me stay here? With you three?"

"Of course!" They exclaimed simultaneously, filling Blue's heart with joy. She looked around at Pepperland, the place she had helped save. Home isn't where you come from, she thought, home is where you build the best memories. And this was the only place in the universe that she could say she had built happy memories in.

"Thank you." She whispered to the trio, and gazed around again.

They were home.
