Chapter 21: Blood
"Why the hell," Thelma snapped, "are you leaping round corners and attacking people?" Blue stared at Emily, who was helping Finn up and hurriedly apologising. She asked simply "Where's Roger?".
Emily sighed and took her helmet off to reveal a sweaty and tearful face. "I don't know. Whatever... whatever that thing in the cave is... it's got Roger." Finn put his arm around his sister. "It's okay. We'll find him."
Blue was looking around at the unforgiving cave walls. She examined her sword and noticed that it was shorter than everyone else's, but that made sense. She was even shorter than Emily after all. It was a tinny, marshmallow pink colour but was light and manoeuvrable, which was all that really mattered, she supposed.
Glancing at Finn and Emily who were obviously sharing something private, she starting poking at the walls with her sword. She didn't do it for any particular reason except for boredom and frustration.
She scraped the sword along the stone when it suddenly got lodged in something sticky. Disgusted, she peered down to see it was stuck in a wet clump of what looked like dark green chewing gum. Mortified, she pulled her sword away with a mutter of "That's gross."
"What's that?" Asked Thelma, who obviously wasn't enjoying being squished between Finn and Emily. It must be hard living life as a speaker, thought Blue. "Nothing." She replied. "Just something horrible my sword touched. Green and disgusting."
For some weird reason, this seemed to interest Emily, who stumbled over to get a look. Finn followed. Blue heard Emily gasp and Thelma simply said "Kraken."
Blue was extremely confused. The Kraken was small enough to get in this narrow tunnel with them? And what did that green stuff have to do with it? Thelma, noticing Blue and Finn's confusion, explained.
"These tunnels are like a huge network that all come from a main cavern. That's where the Kraken is. What it does is reaches its tentacles down different tunnels to find food and things. The actual main body of the Kraken never leaves the cavern, which is also where the portal will be."
"And" added Emily, "one of the Kraken's tentacles took Roger. We managed to injure it first and it's bleeding." She pointed at the clump of green. "That's its blood."
"Well then." Said Finn. "It's still slightly wet, so it must be fairly fresh." He stared hard at the stone, trying to make his eyes adjust even more to the darkness. "There." He said. "There's more blood here." He pointed at an even larger clump of Kraken blood. And another. And another.
"There's a whole trail!" Exclaimed Emily; and took off running, only pausing if she couldn't immediately see any blood. Finn was following her quickly, just as excited at the discovery of a blood trail.
Blue sighed dramatically. It seemed that taking off running ran in their family. "Umm, guys?" She called. "Are we just going to run straight towards the massive toxic monster? Is that a good idea?" They didn't reply. "Guys?"
Letting out another sigh, Blue started to run after them.
