Chapter 19: Roger and Emily
"Hurry up Emily." Snapped Roger, throwing a huge clump of cookie onto the floor. It was pitch black except for the small beams of light shining from the torches built into their helmets.
"How long have we been walking?" Asked Emily; who was starting to really feel the weight of the metal armour. She dragged her feet along the cold stone floor, making Roger wince. It sounded like a knife being scratched on a plate, but ten times louder
"We've been walking for 40 minutes." Thelma replied. "And please stop dragging your feet. Roger hates it."
Emily sighed. They'd probably only covered about a kilometre. She eyed Roger's cookie greedily. Walking was certainly very good for the appetite.
"Hey... umm... Roger?" She asked hesitantly. "Mind if I have a bit of the cookie? It is infinite after all."
Roger stared at her and opened his mouth to say something; but Thelma got there first. "Absolutely not." She told Emily sternly. "It's inedible. You'd find that out soon enough if you tried to eat it."
Emily sighed. She was already hungry after just 40 minutes of leaving the Submarine's sustaining air. She hoped they would find the portal soon.
"Over here!" Roger shouted. "I found something!" Emily joined him and almost fell to the floor in exasperation. It was a dead end. "It's really slimy." Said Roger, poking and stroking the wall. Emily reached out a tentative hand and touched it gently. It was soft and squishy, covered in a thin layer of something wet and slimy.
"I think we can break through it!" Roger said excitedly. "Then we can keep going!" Roger and Emily started pushing and scratching at the wall, digging in and peeling away at it.
Suddenly, it moved. It started to vibrate; and then a huge, amber coloured eye was staring straight at them. Roger gasped as he realised what they had done.
"It's the Kraken."
The tentacle slithered forwards, the eye on the tip of it blinking emotionlessly. Emily and Roger just stood there, not knowing what to do. "Stay very, very still." Murmured Thelma.
The tip of the tentacle reached them. It wound its way between Emily's legs and started to crawl up her back. She could feel the slime on her neck and the cold suction pads on the tentacle slowly reached her face.
She stood there sweating and shaking as the eye on the tip of the tentacle stared at her in the face. She tried to steady her breathing. It can't see my face, she told herself. It doesn't know I'm alive. It won't attack.
The tentacle slowly slid back down Emily's body. She sighed with relief and realised she had been holding her breath. Carefully, she turned her head to look at Roger. He was staring intently at the tentacle that was slithering away. "Why don't we have weapons?" He whispered savagely.
"You do." Thelma murmured. "What do you think those are for?" What looked like a long stick came out of one of Thelma's flaps and tapped Roger's armour.
He looked down to see a handle poking out of a sheath that was apparently built into his leg armour. Glancing at the retreating tentacle, he slowly slid out the sword and held it. It was beautiful - shimmering a hundred different iridescent greens and yellows.
He advanced towards the tentacle, holding his sword above his head. "Roger!" Whispered Thelma urgently. "Stop!"
Roger ignored her and brutally stabbed the sword straight through the tentacle which squirmed in anguish, sending splashes of thick green Kraken blood flying across the cave.
He held the sword against the ground, trying to pin the thrashing tentacle down. Emily drew her sword and ran to help, slashing at it with every opportunity. Suddenly, Roger lost grip and the tentacle reared upwards, slamming down to knock Emily and Thelma to the ground.
Its amber eye let out an ear-splitting hiss, before the tentacle turned on Roger, wrapping around his and constricting him like a snake. He hardly had time to react, but Emily saw him sheath his sword as the Kraken's tentacle surrounded him.
She got up quickly and ran to his aid, but the tentacle was already dragging him away. Emily started to give chase but Thelma told her "It's useless. You'll never catch up."
Emily shouted into the pitch black tunnel. "I'll find you Roger! I'll und you!" Her voice echoed around the tunnel, taunting her. "I'll find you, I'll find you!"
She reached down and picked up the cookie on the floor. "Let's go find Roger." She said; and started walking down the tunnel.
