Chapter 17: Sea of Monsters
Emily sat quietly in a corner, chewing on a packet of jelly beans. Blue sat down next to her and reached into the packet.
"Mind if I..?" she started but cut herself off quickly when she saw Emily's expression. "You know... I'll just grab a sandwich or something..." Blue got up and moved away. Geez, she thought, Emily sure was defensive over her food. Blue would never have guessed such a quiet person would have such a savage stare.
Suddenly there was a scratching noise on one of the portholes of the Submarine. Blue peered out of it and fell back in in a combination shock and wonder. A huge, beautiful emerald green eye peered at her before blinking and moving away. Blue pressed her face up against the glass and watched as an enormous diplodocus-like creature moved slowly away from the Submarine towards a skyline of tall multicoloured mountains.
"We have arrived at the Sea of Monsters." Announced Thelma formally. "Finn, take over the steering. Look out for a Kraken, if you think you see one, shout."
Finn sighed. There was a knot in his blonde hair that he was desperate to untangle, but finding a Boob came first. He grabbed the wheel on the Base Panel and started steering.
Roger slumped in his chair. "Great." He muttered for the thousandth time. "We get to fight some huge powerful monsters." If Blue had a trophy for sarcasm, he would have won by a landslide.
"Can't you find something to do Roger?" Asked Finn.
"No." Snapped Roger angrily before standing up and pacing up and down aggressively.
Blue observed Emily eating her jelly beans. Suddenly she had a strange thought. "Thelma?" She asked "How come we've been on the Submarine for so long and we haven't been hungry until now?"
"You sure are curious." Replied Thelma, feigning annoyance. Really she was happy to show off her knowledge. "Thing is, we've only been here a couple of days and the Submarine has pretty sustaining air."
"What!? The air in the Submarine stops us getting hungry?"
"It has some nutritious stuff in it. And it's got a lot of moisture in so you don't need to drink too much. Course, it doesn't last forever. It only means that you don't have to eat and drink as much. So about now you'll be getting hungry again."
Finn smiled. "Unless you're Emily. Then you're always hungry." He smiled fondly at his sister, who was too busy eating to notice.
Blue was still surprised at how quiet Emily apparently had a huge appetite. Thelma had only just given them access to the food now though, so Blue hadn't really had the chance to observe that before.
"Stop wittering!" Snapped Roger suddenly "And concentrate on the fact that we are surrounded by monsters!"
This seemed to trigger Finn. "What do you think I'm doing!?" He retorted angrily. "You're the one just sat there doing nothing!"
"Stop trying to tell me what to do!" Shouted Roger. "Just because you're older and you think you're... you're better than me doesn't mean you can boss me about!"
"I'm not bossing you around Roger! Stop with the attitude okay!?"
"You know what!? I won't! You stop being so vain!"
"Me? Vain!?"
"Yes, you are! Always fiddling around with your gorgeous blonde locks! Pretty little princess!"
"Shut up Roger!"
"Princess Finn!"
"At least I don't cheat at cards!"
"For heavens sake, stop arguing!" Called Emily, throwing her empty jelly bean packet onto the floor and opening a packet of crisps. Thelma began a half-hearted complaint about litter but no one was really listening.
"Yeah, come on you two." Agreed Blue. "We need to focus on what we're doing..."
"Don't you get involved, shorty!" Snapped Roger. Blue winced. One of her most sensitive points was her height. Sullenly, she sat down by Thelma and didn't make another comment.
Roger instantly regretted his words, but was too angry to do anything for the moment. Moodily,
he sat back down and continued looking bored out of his mind.
Finn was still steering. Roger's comments had really hurt. He sighed. Maybe he was too vain... he couldn't believe they were in such an incredible, frightening place and yet they were arguing over who was prettiest. It was stupid.
He looked at the fantastic landscape that was the Sea of Monsters. There were some pretty beautiful creatures roaming around. If he had time he would have loved to study them. He kept his sapphire eyes fixed on the dark ground below to look out for a sign of a Kraken...
What was that? Finn thought he saw a flash of green at the base of a mountain. "Ummm... guys... I think I saw a Kraken."
Roger didn't respond verbally but gave Finn a piercing stare. Blue nodded sullenly and Emily slowly chewed a jelly bean. Thelma was the only one who seemed remotely interested.
"Great!" Came the Scouse response. "Take us down!"
Finn steered the Submarine to where he thought the Kraken was. At the base of one of the mountains, the mouth of a huge yawning cave spanned across 50 metres of rock.
The tip of a dark, scaled tentacle the width of Finn's leg slithered into the darkness. A huge, blinking amber eye was fixed to the end of the tentacle and stared at the Submarine as it retreated into the cave. Thelma's speaker let out a strange strangled sound. It was the closest she could get to a gulp.
"I think we found our Kraken."
