Chapter 48: The Final Game Part II

~from Levi's POV~
Yosen was a tough opponent, but I wasn't going to lose. It wasn't about me; it was about (y/n). She'd worked so hard, coming to every practice, every training session, every game. Her condition was getting worse, not that either of us would ever admit it, but she still came, every day, a smile on her face and encouragement lighting up her skin.
It was because of her that I'd joined, that I was standing on the court this very second.
It was all thanks to (y/n) that I wasn't alone anymore.
When the ball came to me, I was ready.

~from Eren's POV~
I wanted to win today. Sure, victory always tasted better than defeat, but (y/n) was watching. Winning wouldn't necessarily prove anything to her, but it would light up her face with a smile, and that was the most important thing to me. So when Levi got the ball and met my eyes, I was ready.

~from Himuro's POV~
I wasn't playing well today. I could have blamed it on the weather, the day of the week, or the way I'd tied my shoelaces too tightly, but I couldn't lie to myself for long.
I was distracted by (y/n).
Every time I was on the court and started running, I had to remind myself where I was going before my feet accidentally carried me to her.
I was still thinking of her when third quarter started, and my mark immediately took advantage of my lack of focus to slip away from me. I tried to follow them, but I was just moving too slowly. Then, a second too late, I realized it was all part of their plan to get me out of position so Levi and Eren could coordinate a two-man offensive strike, but I wasn't able to get back in time to stop them from plowing through the chinks in our defense and scoring basket after basket. Even when I adjusted my position to guard specifically for this, Eren would just set up a screen and give Levi an extra second to back up to the three point line and score a three.
Levi - he was a real threat. Point guard, power forward, and a small forward when he felt like it?
(Y/n) had once told me that when asked what position he played, he answered, "All of them," on a whim, but that wasn't too far from the truth.
(H/s/n) managed to close the point gap and take the lead by the start of fourth quarter, and during our break, we decided that Murisakabara would play offensively as well, since (h/s/n) couldn't defend well against him.
As though expecting it, (h/s/n) changed up their defense to allow Murisakabara past easily, which seemed strange, and my instincts were right. As soon as the ball Murisakabara dunked hit the ground, (h/s/n) immediately passed it to Mayzumi, who directly it to Levi, who took a three before Murisakabara was even at half court.
That's when I understood - they had given up on blocking Murisakabara almost entirely. None of their players could match him for size or power, so instead, they had decided to outscore him. Atsushi was good on offense, but his style limited him primarily to two points shots. (H/s/n) had changed their defense to be tight from half court to the three point line, but inside was an obvious weak point. Clearly, they were determined to merely outscore; as long as they could block their opponent's three and manage to get their own in, they would win.
I would say that we - Yosen - had some kind of a counterattack, some kind of plan to deal with this, but (h/s/n) played like no other team we'd ever seen. We'd all watched tapes of their previous games, but they were bringing out new strategies and plays that we'd never seen.
Besides that, even if we managed to block out Levi from taking threes, there was still Koganei, and although he didn't have perfect accuracy, he was still going to be a problem, not to mention Sakurai, who had far more accuracy.
Even if they couldn't make a three, they had a solid pairing between Levi and Eren for twos, and Mayuzumi was always just out of our eyesight.
I'd known it when I'd first set foot on the court, although I'd been in denial of it. Ever since seeing (y/n), I'd known that Yosen would lose. (H/s/n) had something that we didn't. They'd made basketball their own by building the game around their players, by personalizing their play to match their team.
They had created their own style of basketball, while we were just trying to match what had already been created.

~from Eren's POV~
The game was close, but the entire team could feel it as we surged onward, keeping up point for point. (H/s/n) - the dark horse of the Winter Cup - was here to win.
Armin's pre-devised two-man plays were really coming in handy, though!
With less than a minute left in the game, the score was 134-128, with (h/s/n) in the lead. These last seconds were the most dangerous of all. Yosen had nothing left to lose, so we had to be careful. They could easily make up the lost points and win in three baskets or with fouls.
Levi stood just outside the three point line, dribbling at a fast pace while scanning his teammates' positions. When he saw that nobody was open, I nodded at him, and he let himself sink slightly before jumping and shooting.
The ball hit the backboard and rebounded back right to Mayuzumi, who appeared out of nowhere to pass the ball to me.
I jumped and tipped the ball in midair so it just went over the rim and into the basket.
The buzzer rang, and there was a moment of silence as the ball fell through the basket netting and hit the ground.
Then the crowd went crazy.
Everyone was shouting and cheering, except for Yosen, who looked disappointed. I looked up and saw Mikasa waving at me from the stands with a sign that said, "DON'T SUCK, EREN." Sticking out my tongue, I waved back.
I looked towards the bench to see (y/n), craving that warm smile of her, only her eyes were tightly shut, her arms wrapped around herself.
Is (y/n) okay? I wondered, but then someone from (h/s/n) hit me on the head, cheering for my winning basket.
Then I heard it - a sound so quiet it seemed that I'd imagined it, but I'll always remember what I heard that day.
It was the ringing of a small, silver bell.
Eyes wide, I turned to see (y/n) gripping the necklace I'd given her, and I started walking towards her, then I started running, and when (y/n)'s eyes fluttered and she began to fall, I just barely made it in time to catch her.
"(Y/n)!" I yelled desperately, putting two fingers to her throat and detecting an erratic heartbeat. I looked to Hanji, who was standing behind me, a worried look on her face. "We need an ambulance!"
She nodded and ran off, not making any strange comments for once.

EMT's came a minute later with a stretcher to get (y/n), and I followed them, my hands curled into fists at my side. Why am I so useless, so helpless? What else can I do for (y/n)? Why didn't she tell me that she wasn't feeling well?
Then, all of a sudden, Levi was by my side.
"There's something I have to tell you," he said, and I turned to him, surprised to see a lack of anger or animosity behind his eyes.
"I'm listening."
