Chapter 25: P(eter)TSD(ying)

Peter stumbled onto the roof top after the man of iron. He yanked off his mask to beam at Tony.

"Holy shit!" Peter exclaimed. "That was awesome! Did you see the look on that dude's face?! He was like, ahhhh! And i was like, eat my webs! And he was like-!"

"Yeah, kid, i saw, i was there," Tony said heavily, his face-plate lifting from the rest of the suit to reveal the man's tired face.

Peter was unfazed. "This is so cool. We're like partners-does this make me your sidekick? Oh, just wait till i tell Ned-."

"Apartment fire reported on Empire Avenue. Eight occupants last seen inside," Came both Friday's and Karen's voice from inside their respected suits.

"Sweeeet," Peter said and pulled his mask back on eagerly, the eyes widening comically to reflect the teen's excitement.

Tony shot him a weird look before retracting his own face mask and firing up his repulsers. "You know, most kids don't get excited about someone's house burning down," he said.

Peter shrugged. "Well, it's pretty safe to say that I'm not like most kids."

Tony snorted in agreement before taking to the sky. Peter shot a web and latched onto his armor a moment later, the pair making their way to Empire Avenue.

They landed a moment later at the scene. It was a three story apartment building, and the second floor was caught on fire, the flames starting to lick at the third floor. If Peter listened hard enough, he could hear the people struggling to breathe inside.

"Okay, kid," Tony said, dropping down on the ground. "I'll take the third floor, you take the second. Just focus on getting everyone out as quick as you can. The paramedics can deal with the injuries."

Peter nodded in understanding before leaping towards the building. The arachnid stuck to the wall, clambering up it on all fours. He stopped at a window on the second floor and yanked it open, crawling inside.

As soon as Spider-Man's red and blue clad feet hit the floor, he felt the effects of the burning building. His eyes burned behind his mask, his mouth going instantly dry. His lungs ached, his muscles screamed with the slightest movement. He needed to get everyone out as quickly as possible if they were going to recover.

Karen scanned the floor for life, identifying a woman and two young children holed up in the bathroom.

Spider-Man crouched down and sprinted to the bathroom. He reached the room and barreled through the door without thinking, meeting the terrified looks on the children's faces. The woman laid passed out between them.

"O-oh, okay," Peter wheezed. "Hey, guys. I-I'm Spider-Man. I'm here to rescue you."

The older looking of the two kids, a blond-haired boy, stared at Spider-Man with wide eyes. He went to say something but ended up falling into a coughing fit.

"Hey! It's gonna be okay! Try to save your breath, I'm going to get all of you out of here," Peter reassured the kid before hearing a message from Tony come through his suit.

"Less talking and more doing, kid! The buildings gonna come down!" Tony said through the com.

The message instantly triggered fight or flight mode in Peter. Adrenaline pumped through his veins, his muscles tensed, his heart hammered. He needed to move fast, but it was hard to even breathe when you're back trapped under a building.

"Move Spider-Man!" Tony shouted and Peter could faintly hear the sound of repulsers firing up in the distance.

The teen nodded to himself, shaking out his limbs and taking a deep, smoke-filled breath, before scooping up the two kids.

"Okay, blondie, I'm gonna need you to climb onto my back and hold on, okay? So i can hold your sister and your mom, okay?" Spider-Man instructed and waited patiently for the kid to maneuver himself so he was hanging onto Peter's back. By the time Peter had the little girl in one arm and the woman slung over his shoulder, he could really feel the building straining to stay upright. The floor creaked and whined as Spider-Man took off back the way he'd come in, panic fueling his oxygen-deprived muscles.

The spider arrived back at the window from which he entered and peered out of it. "Ironman!" He called down to the suit of armor helping a young couple into an ambulance. "Catch!" And he tossed the little girl out the window and down to the waiting man below.

"Okay, blondie, you're next," Peter wheezed, the smoke clogging his lungs, and helped the child back into his arms. Peter went to nudge him towards the window but the kid gripping him by the spider logo on his chest. He looked at the superhero with the biggest brown eyes Peter had ever seen.

"Please, don't let my mommy die," the child whimpered.

Something clenched Peter's heart. He leaned in close to the kid and whispered, "I won't, i promise."

The kid slowly raised his hand, his pinkie straightened. "Pinkie promise?"

Peter smiled behind the mask and locked fingers with the child. "Pinkie promise. Now go."

He didn't need to be told twice. The kid slowly crawled onto the windows ledge and pushed himself off, landing in Tony's arms two stories below.

Just as the kid disappeared from Peter's sight, did the floor he was standing on give out, sending Peter and the woman in his arms crashing down to the first floor.

Peter cried out at his leg was snagged on a piece of jagged floorboard right before he hit the ground, rolling in the air so the woman landed on top of him. Wooden splinters rained down around them.

"Peter! Are you okay?!" Tony screamed through the com. "Peter, report!"

Peter groaned, his whole body aching. He struggled into a sitting position and yanked his mask off. He gulped down desperate mouthfuls of air that didn't satisfy his need for oxygen.

"Kid!"

The Ironman suit came crashing into the apartment building, destroying what was left of the entryway. Tony spotted Peter lying on the floor with a woman on top of him and flew to his side.

"Oh, Peter...," the billionaire sighed, gently running a hand over the large gash in Peter's leg. "Let's get you guys out of here." He scooped up the pair and marched out of the burning building, the rest of the second floor coming down behind him.

A gasping Peter glances back at the building over Tony's shoulder, watching as the entire building collapsed in on itself just moments after he'd been confined to the floor. He shivered, feeling panic grip him in a steel fist. He could feel his breaths coming quicker, yet feeling heavier, his entire body swooning in Tony's arms.

"Peter? Peter, earth to Peter?" Tony waved a hand in front of the teen's face and setting him gently down on a stretcher. It felt like Peter was hearing him from under water-he could make out the words but he didn't have the strength to swim up to the surface and reply.

"Helloooo?" Tony was starting to get worried. Had Peter inhaled too much smoke? Had he hit his head when he'd fallen through the floor?

"Dad?" Peter mumbled, his eyes fluttering like he was just waking up. His body hurt, his wrists felt freshly snapped, his back screamed, and his legs burned. "Did the building fall on me? Did i save that lady?"

Tony pursed his lips together. "No, Pete, the building didn't fall in you. But yes, you did save the woman. She's gonna be fine."

Peter sighed, his muscles melting. "Oh..i could've sworn it did. I-I...I felt it."

Tony frowned and ushered a paramedic over. "I hope that's just the smoke inhalation talking..." He murmured before gently pressing an oxygen mask over his son's face. Peter looked at him gratefully before letting himself drift to sleep.

"Please, don't let my mommy die."

Peter sobbed, his body screaming out in pain as the entire building came crashing down on him. He couldn't do it, not again. But he had to. He had to save those children's mother even if it killed him.

So, Spider-Man held up a building for the third time in short his life, every second more painful than the last. He cried as it slowly got heavier, and heavier, and heavier. And the woman wasn't waking up. Why wasn't she waking up?!

"Dad!" Peter cries, tears blurring his vision. He fell to his knees. "Dad! Help me! I-I can't..."

And then Tony appeared, his unconscious body lying next to the woman's, adding more pain to Peter's load as he struggled to save two lives instead of one.

But it didn't stop. More bodies appeared, Pepper Potts, Natasha Romanoff, Rhodey, Ned, Mj. And as more bodies piled up around him, unconscious but alive, more rubble accumulated on Peter's back.

Before he knew it, he was practically lying on his stomach with the building supported on his back. Before he knew it, he was praying to die just so the pain would stop.

But he just woke up instead.

Peter gasped as the building severed his body, the weight crushing everything and everyone under it. He snapped awake like someone simply switching on a light switch.

Even though he was awake now, the pain still lingered in his body. He spluttered for air, coughing through tears and smoke. His body hurt so bad, it was the worst pain he'd ever felt in his entire life, and it was fake.

Peter whimpered, wanting so badly to escape but knowing he couldn't. Never. He'd always in some way be trapped under a building.

"Pete? You awake?" Mr. Stark said, peering his head into the kid's room. Originally, the doctor wanted Peter to be located in the medbay so they could monitor his oxygen levels. But Tony has insisted he be in the comfort of his own bedroom.

Peter didn't answer, just continued to rock back and forth on the bed.

Tony furrowed his brows. "Peter?"

Peter glanced up with eyes full of tears. "Dad?" He whispered, his voice wobbly.

Tony smiled gently and placed a hand on the teen's shoulder. "Yeah, it's me."

"But-but you died." Peter said. "I killed you. I killed you all."

Tony pulled Peter into his chest, his tired brain making the connections. "No, son, you didn't. We're all okay. Go back to sleep."

Peter shook his head, his sweaty curls tickling the billionaires chin. "No, no. I-I can't. I won't."

Tony understood. "Popcorn and a movie then? It's nearly 5am anyway."

Peter nodded. "That sounds nice. Can we watch Star Wars?"

"Whatever you want, kiddo. As long as it has nothing to do with falling buildings."

  "Agreed."
