Chapter 5
Streampaw's POV
I pad out of Sunstar's den, looking baffled. Flaresoul notices my expression and barked a rare laugh, startling many cats in the camp.
"You get used to it," he reassures me, smiling. "It just takes a while."
"Do you?" I wrinkle my nose at him as he shrugs. I take that as a no.
"All right, come on," Flaresoul orders. "We're going on a border patrol. Some ThunderClan cats have been spotted too close." He snorts. "They don't have any sense."
We walk over to the pair of cats that's supposedly accompanying us on the patrol.
"Streampaw!" Silverpaw says in excitement. "You're coming too! Yay!"
"Settle down, Silverpaw," Flashfoot commands. "Otherwise I'll have you in camp searching the elders for ticks while the rest of us are on border patrol." Silverpaw immediately shuts up, and I snort in amusement. She sends me a glare and I try to cover it up by clearing my throat.
"Lets just go," my mentor sighs. "Come on, you two."
Flashfoot and Flaresoul head out of camp, while Silverpaw and I trail behind.
"So, how's Flashfoot been for a mentor?" I ask in a whisper.
"I don't know," my sister replies. "We haven't really done anything." She is silent for a few moments, and then says, "Hey, why did Sunstar call you guys to his den?"
At this I pause. Should I make up an excuse? Or should I tell her? I run the results through my head quickly.
Well, there's I chance she won't believe me. But there's also a chance she will and think I'm a monster. Guess I'll just have to take those chances.
"He called us up there because..." As I trail off, Silverpaw raises an eyebrow at me.
"Well?" she presses.
"He called us up there because of my and Flaresoul's abilities," I blurt.
"That doesn't help!" Silverpaw protests.
"I can't really explain," I say. "So... I have to show you. Hey, Flaresoul!" I add in a call. He stops and glances back.
"What is it?" he asks.
"Um... I think I heard something over there. Can Silverpaw and I go check it out? Could've been prey."
Flashfoot and Flaresoul exchange a look, then Flashfoot says, "Ok, but don't be long. We'll wait for you," Flashfoot says.
I nod and drag Silverpaw with me over out of earshot of our mentors. "Watch," I whisper.
Focusing, I close my eyes and take a deep breath. I feel Silverpaw staring and try to ignore her. Something sparks inside of me and I open my eyes.
With a flick of my tail, a ring of water appears around me. I watch Silverpaw's jaw drop and inwardly flinch at her expression.
"Did-"
I cut her off with a shh as my ears pick up talking, and I realize that we are by the Shadowclan border. The ring of water evaporates.
"Follow me," I murmur. There's a cluster of gorse mixed with pine trees at the border with a steep hill beneath us. We wriggle underneath the gorse and push our heads out so we can see.
What I see is two cats, a grey she-cat and a white tom. They seem to be mentor and apprentice, and smell of faintly of herbs.
"Medicine cats," Silverpaw whispers, a bit too loudly. The white tom looks up, and his eyes widen as he sees us watching. I duck out and pull Silverpaw out as well just as the tom turns to tell his mentor.
"Why you do that?" I snap.
"Do what?" she protests.
"Talk so loud!" I reply, glaring. "He saw us! And now he knows what we look like, and he'll most likely tell his leader, and then we'll get in trouble!"
"Why are you two this close to the border?" a voice growls. I turn to see Flaresoul and Flashfoot glowering at us.
"The prey got away," I say, looking as apologetic as possible. "It crossed the border."
"Well, come on," Flashfoot sighs. "We don't have all day." He turns and flicks his tail, signaling for us to follow. We trail after our mentors reluctantly to complete the patrol.
