Happily Ever After? (Part 1)

Author's note:

This part is totally out of the canon, as I've written it while waiting for new lessons.

It happens after MC left Devildom. Despite all the precious time spent together and all the promises, Lucifer decides not to contact her, believing she got back to her carefree life in the human world where she should stay.

Three years have passed and Devildom is preparing for its biggest celebration of all time - Lord Diavolo is marrying his loyal butler Barbatos (because why not? no one can stop me! I think they are cute together :D). The groom invites MC as the guest of honour, to sing at his wedding. And here's what happened!

Disclaimer: this whole scene was inspired by the song "Endlessly" by Amaranthe, and that's the song I imagined Lhori's singing.

Enjoy!

Lucifer stood in the corner of the ballroom, a glass of wine already in his hand. He was tapping his fingers on it impatiently while Diavolo was speaking. He should be thrilled to listen to his friend's wedding speech, but he could not focus. His gaze was constantly going toward the stage, hidden in darkness now. He could distinguish shades of persons moving around, preparing their instruments. She was there, he knew it.

She arrived yesterday with Satan, but he had so much to do he did not have a chance to see her. And during the ceremony he was constantly with Diavolo and Barbatos, making sure everything went smoothly. But after the speech, there will be time for the first dance. And she will be right there, on that stage singing. He furrowed his brows. He hoped that after three years he would get over this strange fascination with that woman. It seemed to go well, while he was not letting himself to contact her. After all, she was human, she should go back to her world and her life. Her real family, who loved her, not live among demons. And yet, he found his heart beating suspiciously fast.

"Lucifer, are you all right?" Satan whispered beside him.

"Hm?" He looked at him.

"It's not like you to ignore Diavolo's speech," he smirked. "Is it maybe because of our human friend I brought here yesterday?"

"I have no idea what you are mumbling about, Satan," he hissed. "Shut up and pay attention." His brother only laughed.

Diavolo finished his speech and made a toast.

"Now, let's get this party started! I believe it's time for our first dance!" he announced cheerfully.

He took Barbatos' hand, and they moved to the centre of the dancefloor. All lights got dimmed, leaving only the newlywed in the light beam. And then, another beam illuminated the stage, and there she was.

Lucifer felt like his breath was caught in his throat. She was even more beautiful than when she left. She looked more mature. Her features were more pronounced, dark hair was arranged in a complicated bun, leaving a beautiful face for all to see. She wore an elegant red dress with black elements and a long train. She looked marvellous. And her voice was different too; he always loved it, but now it had even more depth and was more powerful. She was singing about endless love, her voice enchanting as a mythical siren. Lucifer found himself unable to tear his eyes away from her. Deep down, he wished she could sing this song only for him. When she reached the chorus, her voice became even more powerful, booming over the whole ballroom. Lucifer's jaw fell. It was beyond anything he had heard before.

"Wow, she did not slack with her singing those last three years, does she?" Satan said with a smirk sipping his wine.

"She certainly didn't," he replied, closing his mouths.

The song ended, and loud applause filled the ballroom. Diavolo walked onto a stage and took the microphone.

"Thank you all for coming! Now that the boring part is over, I'll leave you with this amazing band Supersonic, that agreed to give a live performance at our wedding!" Grinning, he gave the microphone back to the big demon with a long mane of red hair.

"Welcome, Devildom!" he boomed with the confident voice of an experience frontman. "We are so thrilled to be here today with you to celebrate this amazing union of our beloved leader! I am also even more pleased and honoured that we can perform with this amazing woman! Please give a round of applause to Lhori!" The room exploded with cheers. The frontman went to where Lhori stood at the side of the stage, took her hand, and kissed her affectionately.

Lucifer gritted his teeth and narrowed his eyes, feeling fury rising inside him. The demon seemed to be unaware of his death stare and continued, still holding Lhori's hand. "You've already heard her singing, but I tell you, this is just a small part of her amazing vocal skills. When I first heard her sing, I was sure she must be an angel! But this amazing woman is human, the most beautiful and extraordinary of them all!"

Lucifer noticed even from where he stood that Lhori was blushing and humbly kept her eyes on the floor.

"That's why I am beyond happy that she agreed not only to sing with us tonight but also to accompany us on our three weeks tour around Devildom!" The room exploded with applause again.

"Who is this guy exactly?" Lucifer asked coldly.

"Oh, him?" asked Satan looking at Lucifer with a smirk. "He's called Maestro. He's a very talented musician, very popular lately. Diavolo has quite an obsession with his band. That's why he arranged for their concert. And he also suggested they invite Lhori for collaboration." The band and Lhori started playing again. Her dress suddenly changed; she lost a long train showing her legs in long black boots and played electric guitar. She looked incredibly sexy. "I have to say they hit it right off. They seem to be awfully good together, don't you think, Lucifer?"

"I have no idea what you are talking about," he barked gripping his wine glass so tightly it started to crack. Satan only laughed.

As the concert proceeded,  Lucifer couldn't focus on anything else. He kept staring at the stage where Lhori and Maestro were performing, and he had to admit, they looked comfortable together, looking into each other eyes, exchanging little touches here and there... His blood was boiling every time he saw that.

When they finally took a break and the orchestra took over the music he was at his wit's end. He wanted to charge to that stage and take Lhori away. He wanted to go backstage to talk to her finally, but Diavolo suddenly appeared at his side.

"Isn't it a marvellous performance, Lucifer?" he asked cheerfully.

"I'm glad you like it," he replied, trying to hide his annoyance.

"Lhori is even more amazing than before, don't you agree?"

"She is very talented. There was never any doubt about that."

"I'm so happy she agreed to sing with Maestro. I knew they would be brilliant together." Lucifer wanted to reply but he spotted that Lhori and that blasted demon just went to the dancefloor together. "Lucifer, are you alright? You look awfully anxious."

"I'm perfectly fine, Diavolo," he replied with gritted teeth. The demon just whispered something to Lhori's ear, and she laughed. He forced himself to look at his friend. "How are you feeling as newlywed?"

"I feel ecstatic. Love is a beautiful thing, Lucifer. I wish you would  let go a little of your pride and just gave it a chance."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"You know exactly what I mean," Diavolo said with a smirk. "Oh, I believe the song is changing. Why don't you go there and ask her to dance? I bet you have a lot of catching up to do." And with that, he left.

Lucifer cursed under his breath but started to make his way through the dancefloor to Lhori.

"I believe it's time to switch," he said with his powerful voice. Maestro looked at him and stopped dancing. He let go of Lhori and bowed to him.

"It was a pleasure, my dear," he said to Lhori, kissing her hand lightly, and then handed it over to Lucifer, who gave him a death stare.

"Lucifer," Lhori said, putting her hand on his arm. Her eyes were cold, and her voice full of the reserve.

"Lhori, long time no see," he started noncommittally while starting the dance. She felt so right in his arms that he found it difficult to focus on anything besides her warm body in his embrace.

"Indeed, it's been over three years already," she replied, not looking at him. Her eyes focused on a point over his arm, her body tense.

"Who is this... Maestro guy?" he asked with annoyance before he could stop himself. "Do you have feelings for him? Shall I remind you about our pact? That you are mine?"

"Oh, you've got to be kidding..." she hissed and tried to get away from him, but he held her close tightly. She looked at him, anger burning like fire in her blue eyes. "How dare you say that to me now! I don't recall getting a single message from you since I left! You have no right to give me crappy treatment!"

"It was for your own good," he said, feeling his own anger rising.

"Oh, of course, it was. It always is with you, Lucifer. You know everything and can decide for everyone, no point in asking others, is it?"

"What do you mean by that? Are you questioning my authority?"

"I don't give a damn about your authority," she hissed. "You shunted me out the moment I left, so what do you expect from me? You have no right to ask me if I have feelings for anyone, or question my loyalty!"

"Our pact still stands, you know that," he said through gritted teeth. "I won't be standing helplessly while you flirt and get all lovey-dovey with another demon..." He didn't know what exactly happened. Suddenly there was a loud slapping sound and he felt his cheek burning, while Lhori was out of his arms fuming. Did she just...

"You can get your pact and shove it up  your ass, Lucifer!" she barked. "You showed exactly what I meant to you for those last three years, so stop pretending now!" With that, she turned on her heel and moved away from him disappearing in the crowd of whispering demons. He was standing there flabbergasted, still keeping his hand on the cheek she just slapped.

"Well, that didn't go as planned, did it?" asked amused Diavolo, who appeared at his side.

"I... think I might have spoken too harshly," Lucifer admitted rubbing his brow.

"You think?" his friend asked with a wide grin. "But you must admit, she does have the guts to slap you like this... Eh, I wish I had managed to get my phone in time to get a photo..."

"Really, Diavolo?"

***

Lhori has escaped the crowded ballroom and sneaked out to a small balcony overlooking beautiful palace gardens. She needed to be alone for a while to collect her thoughts. She leaned on the railing and sighed heavily. She could not believe she had just slapped Lucifer. But then again, he was a total bastard, so it was well deserved. Unfortunately, it didn't make her feel any better. Suddenly she felt his presence.

"Lhori?" he asked hesitantly and come to stand next to her. He also leaned on the railing and then looked at her. "Are you ok?"

"I'm fine," she replied quietly, not looking at him. "I'm sorry I slapped you."

"I have to admit, I deserved it," he said with a sigh. "Lhori, please accept my sincere apology. You were right. I had no right to speak to you the way I did."

She shrugged and looked at him for the first time. His handsome face looked troubled, his brows frowned. But he hasn't changed a bit since she last saw him. "Don't worry about it. Though I'm still pissed, you didn't bother to talk to me after I left. Everyone else did, you know."

"I'm aware of that," he said quietly and looked away from her.

"Then, why?"

"I... thought it would be better for you to forget about me..."

"Why?"

He sighed and looked at her. "You are human, Lhori. You have family and friends who love you so much there... I didn't want to deprive you of normal life."

She scoffed. "You haven't changed a bit. Still think you know what's best for everyone."

"I never denied that I'm flawed in this aspect," he said with a small smile. "But it was also because of selfish reasons. I thought that if I deny myself the right to contact you, it would be easier to forget you."

"Do you really want to forget me?" she asked quietly.

"I thought I did. After you left everything felt... empty and lifeless. I didn't know what to do with all those feelings."

"So, you decided to bury them," she sighed and crossed her arms.

"I'm... not very good when it comes to feelings," he admitted.

"I really thought you would ask me to stay," she said after a long silence looking at him with sadness in her eyes. "After we made a pact, and after that last night... I would stay here if only you asked."

"I couldn't possibly ask that of you," he whispered.

"Well, you didn't. Not then, and not anytime later. Do you know how I felt? I thought that, ultimately, none of this mattered. I didn't matter," her voice started shaking.

"Lhori..."

"I kept hoping, though. That one day you'll come back for me. You'll call me. Text me. Anything at all."

"It was too much for me. If I let myself hear your voice again, I wouldn't be able to stand the emptiness you left behind..."

"Lucifer... please stop," she said, covering her face in her hands. "It doesn't matter now, does it?" She looked at him again. She saw the longing in his eyes, regret, and loneliness. "It's all a history. No point in dwelling on that. Let's just move on, alright?"

"Move on?" he asked hesitantly.

"Yes. You know, life goes on and all that..."

"Is that what you want?"

She smiled sadly. "Since when are you asking my opinion? In the end, it doesn't matter what I want." He wanted to respond, but at that moment Maestro came out to the balcony.

"Lhori, here you are! We are starting with acoustic in ten minutes... Oh, I'm sorry I didn't mean to interrupt," he added seeing Lucifer.

"It's ok. We are done talking anyway," Lhori replied, giving Lucifer a sad smile. "If you excuse me, I have to go back to what I do best. You should do the same. Enjoy the party." She turned on her heel and strode back to the ballroom, hoping he hadn't heard her voice shaking.
