The Gala

Barbara's POV
I have no idea what to make of Dick's singing. Was he singing it at me? Or Zatanna? Or does he just like that song?
"If anyone needs me, I'll be in my room getting changed for this stupid Gala." I yell, finally pulling off my lab coat.

Ah crap. I knew that the majority of my clothes were black, but only now do I realise that there is such a thing as too much shadow.
"Artemis?" I say into my phone.
"Barbara! What's up?" My friend answers.
"I need to get something for this gala tonight." I explain.
"I'm outta town, GA's got me doing some investigation. But I think I can send someone to help. Meet them in the Happy Harbour Mall." She instructs.
"Why not here?" I ask.
"Because I'm sending Zatanna."

----------------------------------------------

"Zatanna!" I yell, when I spot her.
"Ah. So, what do I call you out here?" She asks, smirking.
"Just call me...I dunno...Aria." I shrug.
"Okay, let's go!" She grabs my arm.
"Uh, Zee, why are you suddenly so cool with this?" I ask cautiously.
"Because if I make you look your best, and Robin picks me over you, then I'll know that I truly earned him." She explains, like its the most obvious thing in the world.
"So, you're going to make yourself look your best?"
"I always look my best, Aria." Then she flicks her hair and starts walking towards a clothing store. "First, we've got to find you something more...flattering than the clothes I've seen you in."
"Uh...thanks?" I'm actually surprised that she's so...calm. Sure, she's being a bit self-centred, but I think she's genuinely going to help.

"Okay! Let me see your eyes." Zatanna studies my face for a moment. "Blue is definitely your colour." She pulls a huge poofy dress from the rack. "This?" I shake my head. She's pulls another with bits cut out of it.
"Great." I say sarcastically. "Where's the rest of it?" Then she pulls out one more. It's a midnight blue colour, and had two slightly off the shoulder straps, and reached the floor. To add more dimension, it has silver rhinestones that glitter like stars covering it. "I'll try it."

"Zatanna I don't think-" Zatanna holds up a hand.
"Relax. We'll just get your hair done, and you makeup, then you can go back to wherever you're going with this stuff."

Dick's POV
Babs disappeared a couple hours ago, something about dressed and Happy Harbour. She's already twenty minutes late. She and I are supposed to be welcoming guests. Looks like that's not gonna happen.

I lean against a pillar, a mock-tail in one hand, the other in my pocket. Suddenly the doors swing open and a girl I barely recognise walks quickly down the stairs. Her hair is held to the side in curls that I can only describe as waterfalls, and her dress hugs her like a second skin, and is a midnight blue colour, covered in silver rhinestones like stars. Her shoes are a matching shade of blue, and click with a certain finesse as she strides towards me.
"Babs?" I exclaim.
"'Sup, Grayson?" She laughs.
"Wow! You look-" Babs silences me like a conductor.
"Let's go somewhere else. This crowd is just giving me a worse headache. Here's a tip: never, ever, let anyone apply two bottles of hairspray on you."

Babs and I on a steel bench alone on the highest balcony, and below us, some people are slow dancing. An idea strikes me. I grab her hand, and pull her up.
"What're you doing?" Babs asks.
"We're going to dance." I explain, then both of us blush when we realise how our fingers are intertwined.
"Okay." I put my hands on her waist, and she put hers loosely around my neck. We sway to the music.

When you press me to your heart,
I'm in a world apart,
A world where roses bloom.

"It's so weird that you're all than me now." Babs observes. "Are you sure Zatanna doesn't mind this?"
"You know, I don't think things are going to work out with us." I reply.
"Why not?"
"She's not my type." I explain.

And when you speak, angels sing from above,
And everyday words seem to turn into love songs.

"Then what is your type?" I take a deep breath. Play it cool Grayson.
"You." I say simply. Babs presses her head against my chest, and I wrap my arms around her.
"Yeah?" She whispers.

Give your heart and soul to me,
And life will always be,
La vie en rose.

"I've had a crush on you since...since forever." I reply.
"I've had a crush on you since the first time I met you. Not quite forever." Babs counters.
"You are my forever." I don't why I just said that. It just slipped. Suddenly Babs looks up at me. I put my hand on her cheek, and she puts her hand behind my head. Before I know it, her lips are on mine. I don't think I've ever been happier.

And when you kiss me,
Heaven sighs,
And though I close my eyes,
I see la vie en rose.

So what did you guys think? I thought using la vie en rose would be a nice touch for this chapter. It means 'to see life through rose tint' which is basically saying that loving that person makes life happier.
Stay Whelmed, GrayBats.
Blair out. (AKA Black Swan if you read my DC dare book ;p)
