The Interesting Day When You Locked People in Closets (reader insert, skyeffrey)
You were glad to say that Jane Penderwick was your friend. She was quite the character, from rambling on about Sabrina Starr to asking people questions for her love survey, an ongoing project from when she was 11.
You became friends with her when you were both 12, starting 7th grade. For you, it was nerve racking because you just moved into a house on Gardam Street two days before school started. That meant you were that new kid with no friends that everyone liked until you made your friend choice and the rest of them judged you for it. You crashed into Jane when you were leaving the office. She had her nose in a book, you had yours in your schedule. Her book hit your face- it was in slow motion, watching Pride and Prejudice come flying at your face then feeling that pain. Both of you apologized like crazy and were awkward, until you asked what she thought of Mr. Darcy's attitude and actions toward Elizabeth- you still say a silent thank you to Mr. Darcy whenever you read your copy of Pride and Prejudice . If it wasn't for Mr. Darcy and Pride and Prejudice hitting you in your face, you would've never befriended Jane- a sad thought because she reminds you of a more bookish Jane Bennet.
Three years later, and you still thank Mr. Darcy.

It was a lazy Saturday, you woke up at ten and had been reading Sense and Sensibility, another fantastic Jane Austen novel. Seeming normal, right. Wrong. When you're friends with a Penderwick, normal goes out the window. You're reading Sense and Sensibility when your phone buzzes.
Jane: I need your help!!!
You: I thought you didn't have any homework.
Jane: (Y/N)!!! It's not homework... it's something better.
You: Which would be....
Jane: Setting Skye up with Jeffrey.... they'd be tots adorbs together!!
You: Jane, you're fangirling again. I am curious to know why you want my help setting up your sister and Jeffrey.
Jane: I already have a plan to get everyone, except Skye, Jeffrey, and I, to leave the house. You'll come over after they leave. Then somehow we'll get Skyeffrey together.
You: How? By locking them in a closet that has a listening device on the inside, so we can know what's happening in there, and bake a batch of cupcakes while we're waiting for Skyeffrey to get together.
Jane:(Y/N)!!! THAT'S BRILLIANT!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
You: I was joking...
Jane: So, you're coming over in ten and we're going to rig the closet, then shove Skyeffrey in there and wait it out with cupcakes.
You: Is it too late to say no?
Jane: It was too late when you respond to my plea for help.
You: -.- Really Jane.
Jane: See you in five bestie next door neighbor. :)
Sometimes it was unfortunate that the two of you were next door neighbors, like now because there was no way you could save yourself from what you thought was an impending disaster.
"Mom! Gonna go by Jane's, don't know when I'll be home because I unintentionally became Jane's partner in matchmaking." you called down the hall. Your mom came down the hall with a sly like grin.
"So who, and how, are you matchmaking?" she asked you, sly grin turning into a smirk.
"The how is shoving them into a closet that is rigged with a listening device and waiting it out with cupcakes, the who is Jane's sister, Skye and family best friend, Jeffrey."
"Awwww!" your mom cooed, "Reminds me of when I played matchmaker for my cousin."
You blinked at your mom, not expecting that response. "Wha...?"
"Have fun (y/n), see you later." with that, your mom shoved you out of the house.
"(Y/N)!!!!" Jane shouted dramatically. As soon as the door was open, Jane flung her arms around you. "The victims are playing soccer in the back yard, time to rig the closet with the listening device."
"Where did you get this?" you questioned, holding up the device.
"Oh, that. I have no clue." Jane responded carelessly.
"Are you sure it's safe?" you asked hesitantly, fearing for the outcome with the mysterious listening device.
"Nope. Seriously (y/n), you expect me to know."
"I was hoping you would." you told her, still holding the listening device carefully. You held it away from your body, as if it was about to explode- not that it wasn't a possibility.
Ten minutes and a few bruises later, the listening device was installed into the closet, and you and Jane finally figured out how to work it.
"Can we never do that again?" you ask her, hopeful for a positive answer.
"Depends, we might have to do it for Batty or Ben." Jane said, lost in thought.
"Jane. Let Batty matchmake for Ben, and have Ben do the same for Batty." you told her in a serious voice.
"(Y/N)!!!!" Jane whined.
"Jane, that's final." your tone made it clear you weren't going to be persuaded. Jane pouted, before sighing and giving in. You sighed in relief, glad that another potential disaster was already out of the way.
"Anyway, what's our plan to get Skyeffrey into the closet without them catching on?" Jane asked, voicing the same question you just asked yourself. You wondered how to do it without Skye murdering you- she terrified you when she was mad. You stroked your chin, waiting to come up with another, by Jane's standards, good idea.
"Well we could, first, ask Jeffery to get something, then lock the door on him. Then we tell Skye that Jeffery was being an idiot and got locked in the closet. So when she goes and opens the door to free him, we shove her in and lock the door." You said.
"(Y/N)," Jane shouted, jumping up and down, "that's brilliant!"
You groaned, hating your mind for coming up with these ideas. Jane, not noticing your unhappiness, danced around the kitchen in bliss.

"Hey Jeffery, can you grab that thing on the top self for me?" Jane asked, sounding way too innocent in your opinion. Jeffery, being an unsuspecting and good friend, went into the closet.
"Wh-" Jeffery began, but was cut off by you slamming the door shut, trapping him. Jane quickly locked the door and the two of you went into the kitchen, ignoring Jeffery's pounding on the door.
"Stage one is complete, stage two is in action." Jane whispered to you, just before Skye walked in.
"Have you seen Jeffery, I wanted to practice more soccer."
"I think he's in the hall closet." Jane said, popping a grape into her mouth. Skye raised an eyebrow at you as if checking on Jane's sanity. You shrugged as Skye raised both her eyebrows and made her way to the closet.
"JANE!!" Skye angrily shouted as she was pushed into the closet. The door rattled on it's hinges, making you whimper worriedly. As soon as you heard the lock, you bolted into the kitchen.
"She's gonna kill us." you whispered to Jane, but she just laughed it off. Jane switched on the listening device and popped one of the headset on. You hesitantly put on yours. The first thing you heard was Skye ranting about how, and what way, she'll kill you and Jane, while Jeffery tried to calm her down.
"What type of cupcakes do you want to make?" Jane asked, pulling out a recipe book. You took it from her and browsed through it, sometimes stopping to read the notes- your favorite was by the Pineapple Upside-down Cake, it said never to make with scary news. You made a mental not to ask Jane about that later.
The two of you finally decided on making vanilla cupcakes with frosting the colors of the rainbow. You let Jane handle the frosting, not trusting her with cupcakes. You never thought you'd meet a dessert that disgusted you, however Jane's disastrous attempt at an Angel Food Cake made you want to puke, and you learned your lesson to never trust Jane's baking.
When a static filtered into your ears, you realized that something went wrong with the listening device. Jane's angry mutterings, made you assume that she too couldn't hear what was going on. Jane moaned in disappointment.
"We had the perfect plan, but then it got ruined." she face-planted into the table, and you almost let out a laugh because Jane's habits amused you.
"Oh well, at least we have cupcakes." you let out a laugh at her unhappy groan.
"You're evil, you know that (Y/N)." she muttered, angrily frosting the cupcakes. You raised an eyebrow at her wanting an explanation. However, she didn't give you one.

"Hi Daddy!" Jane shouted happily, hugging her dad and Iantha. "I've had a great day!"
"Hello." you greeted the two adults. The four of you launched into a discussion about cupcakes and how they can reflect the person who made them. All the while, Skyeffrey slowly slipped into the back of your mind.
It was after Batty, Ben, and Lydia came back from the park that you suddenly remembered who was in the closet. A panicky look at Jane, told you she was remembering too. The two of you snuck off to the closet. Upon opening the door, Jane's smile grew. When you looked into the closet, you had to smile too.
Sleeping peacefully, Skye and Jeffery were tangled up with each other. Your sigh of joy was just slightly quieter than Jane's, but the two sighs were loud enough to disturb Skye. One eye slowly opened, then the other followed. Her eyes sharpened into a glare and she whispered one word to you and Jane- "Run."

You and Jane found refuge at your house, hiding there until Mr. Pen came with promises that Skye wouldn't kill the both of you. When Jane went home, with you in tow, Batty started to sing your praises. One glance at Skye revealed a twitching eye. You make shushing motions at Batty, while pointing at Skye.
For the rest of the year, Skye left the two of you in suspense of whether or not she was going to kill you. You thanked your lucky stars that she was pulling your legs (you hoped that).
