15 - Monster

Victoria woke up mortified over her drunken encounter with Jon. He annoyed her, and she knew he was playing games with her about Tommy. Then there was the way he only called her Victoria. He acted like her own brother. He even had the same disappointed look on his face. Unsure of why it mattered, but she hated the feeling he left her with.

He kept to himself and she kept busy by visiting with Sage and baby Daniel. She pushed down her feelings of envy when she thought of her friend with a baby. Soon Mia would have one too. Tori would continue to be the favorite aunt, because Sloane was no competition for the title.

She sat on the floor playing when Sage gasped.

She turned to her, concerned. "What?"

"Vanessa told my mother Tommy was coming to surprise her."

"When?" She jumped up.

"It doesn't say. She saw her the other night at some function."

"And she waited until today to tell you!" Tori was beside herself with excitement. "I have to go!"

"Where are you going?"

"To get the truth from Jonathan Hayes once and for all!"

"Let me know what you find out." Sage called after her, but the door was already shutting behind her.

Sage lived just around the corner. Within minutes, Tori pulled her car next to Jon's hybrid. At least he was home.

She hadn't expected a woman to open the door. She should have known Jon turned her down, because he had someone else. She'd meet her later, but her concern was Tommy.

Not even bothering to push past her, she called through the doorway. "Jon, is it true? Is he coming home?"

His voice responded in his normal authoritative tone. "Victoria. Go next door. I'll come right over to talk to you."

She was embarrassed because his girlfriend reacted like she knew who she was. Had he told her she had asked him to kiss her? Feeling foolish enough, she went to her apartment and hardly paced the length of it when she heard a knock and Jon let himself in.

She turned to him and leapt forward. "Is he really coming?"

"Victoria, relax. He was planning to, but they sent him overseas at the last minute. Oh shit, he was supposed to come and do this. Just sit down, please."

She felt her heart in her stomach. She knew something was wrong. It felt like all her nightmares. She tried to delay whatever he was going to tell her.

"Why didn't you tell me you were seeing someone?"

He shook his head. "He wanted to meet with you and tell you himself. He's coming, but not for you. He's not your future."

"Why? How will we know until we see each other again?" She wouldn't give up. She would fight for him.

"Victoria, listen to me. He moved on like you should have. She's not my girlfriend, she's his wife."

"His what?" Her head felt like it might explode. She felt paralyzed. They had wished in the fountain. It was magical. Mia wished for love and found Ted.

"Tori, I know this is hard, but you broke up so long ago."

She tried to remember the girl at the door. She didn't look like her, she had red hair and she was dressed in a baggy shirt like it was a man's. She felt the tears on her cheeks. It was his shirt. The woman was wearing Tommy's shirt and she lived with him and slept with him and kissed him and laughed with him. She felt sick.

"I'm sorry, Victoria. I tried to tell him, but he insisted it would be fine once he talked to you. He was certain you had moved on."

She watched as he took out his phone. "It's Jon. Victoria needs a friend right now. Give me an hour before you let the rumors fly. Please. Just come. Thanks."

She looked at him. She didn't know who he called, nor did she care. "Tell me this is a joke."

"It's no joke."

"Tell me you're lying."

Jon shook his head. "They've been married two years."

"You didn't tell me." She pounded her fists on him. "Why didn't you tell me?"

He pulled her into his arms. "I should have. I'm sorry."

She pulled away and looked at him with malice through her tears. She should hate him.

"I never should have let it go this long." He shifted his feet and groaned. "I'm sorry. I have to go. I'll check in with you later."

He left and she sank into the sofa in disbelief until she heard him on the back porch. She ran to her window to get another look at her enemy. She gasped. The redhead was carrying a baby. Her world was caving in. Tommy had a baby with another woman.

She had never felt so dejected. Even when he refused to switch schools or come home, she had hope he would eventually return to her. But there was no hope. He was finally coming back, but not to see her. He had a wife, and he gave her a baby. A baby. A wife. A baby. A wife.

"Tori! Tori!" Sage stood over her and sank to the ground next to her. "What's happened?"

"A baby. A wife."

"Who? Oh my God! Are you talking about Tommy."

She nodded. "Baby. Wife."

"Did you see him?" Sage rubbed her back with one hand while holding her son with the other.

She shook her head. "Away. Saw her. Wife."

"You saw his wife. She's here? Ah, honey. I always assumed he moved on, but not this far. Does Vanessa know?"

Jon didn't say. How could she go on without hope? Every day for a years, she woke thinking it could be the day he finally came home. Now it would never be.

"Tori. You had to know. He would have contacted you."

"He said, we'd find our way back. It's all my fault."

"You were both so young."

"My world is caving in and it's all my fault."

"Your faulty. He went away and refused to come home."

She shook her head. "I was so stupid. I tried to make him jealous. I'm the reason we broke up."

"Oh, sweetie. We were all young and stupid once."

"Not, you."

Sage sighed. "I loved the wrong man, a man who didn't love me back."

"Tom told me he's always love me."

Sage sighed again. "He probably thought he would. I ignored everyone's warnings and it hurt."

"Who was he?" Tori doubted Sage could understand.

"We worked together at the museum. We had passion, and I was convinced we'd have a fairy tale ending. My friends thought I was crazy, especially Aidan."

"You were with another man when you knew Aidan?" Sage nodded. "What happened?"

"One day I met an archeologist. She was smart and beautiful. I liked her. Then she mentioned her long term live-in boyfriend, the same guy I sleeping with. It hurt on so many levels. I felt like a fool, because I thought I loved him. I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the signals I missed. For a smart doctoral candidate, I was so stupid."

"How did you get over him?"

Sage smiled. "Aidan. He gave me a shoulder to cry on. He already loved me, but I was too blind to see it."

Tori didn't understand. "I thought you are in love with Aidan."

Sage laughed. "Of course, I'm in love with Aidan. He is my everything, him and Daniel."

"But how after you loved that other guy?"

Sage looked at her like she had said something funny. There was nothing funny about any of it. "Tori, love isn't one and done. You can love again and will. I hope you'll find a man to love you like you deserve, like Aidan loves me... Like Teddy loves Mia... Like Ben loves Sloane... Like Noah loves Brenna."

"Don't say like Tommy loves the red-haired monster."

"Tommy would never love a monster. I bet anything she is a complete opposite of the bitch. Please give her a chance or don't be mad at me when I do."

"I thought you were my friend." Tori felt like Sage had turning on her.

"Honey, I am, but your happiness is out there. I can feel it."

"All my wishes. They'll never come true."

"You made so many wishes you probably broke the fountain."

Tori didn't think Sage was funny. "You really were in love with a man who didn't love you?"

Sage nodded. "It wasn't my finest moment. Tori, no one here knows except Aidan. Please don't tell anyone."

"Everyone knows I'm a stupid fool, but you're the first person I told why we broke up."

"And everyone loves you. I can call the girls and we can get babysitters and go out."

Tori shook her head. "I'd rather stay home and cry."

"Honey, when you're done crying, promise you'll try to be happy."

"I'm not sure I can."

Daniel fussed and rubbed his face into Sage's chest.

"He needs a nap. Will you be alright on your own? I can call someone over. Your mother? My mother?"

She shook her head. "I want to be alone. Don't worry, I won't do anything stupid."

"I didn't think you would. But call me if you need to talk."

Sage hugged her. She held back the tears until her friend left. Then she moved to her sofa and curled up and cried.
