Chapter Six
Linda came out and sat on the couch so Malcolm sat next to her. "You may as well let him go Brian, the pizza's getting cold and we're all hungry. Besides you can just take him down if he makes a jailbreak," Cliff said. Brian laughed and let him go. Angus kept his eyes on me as I sat on the couch by the armrest.
"He'll make it out all right, " said Brian. "With a bullet in his back!"
"Jaaiillbreak!" we all shouted. Though Phil had food in his mouth when he said it so we all laughed when he finished. I thought Angus would sit on the loveseat in the corner but he ended up sitting right next to me. Suspiciously close in fact. Malcolm noticed and looked over Linda's shoulder at us. I looked back at him and he only shrugged at me.
Ellen came out of her shower some minutes later pretending to be upset. "I heard you guys out here having fun without me!" she laughed.
"We had to let Angus go Ellen. We got hungry and the pizza was getting cold," I told her.
"Pity. Maybe next time." She sat on the other side of Angus and held his hand. Of course he held hers back, but it seemed like he was up to something. He'd absolutely sit next to his wife, but some part of him missed someone else. I prayed to God it wasn't who I thought it was.
"Ladies' men over there," Phil said to Brian.
"Get your arse over here an' join 'em," Malcolm said. Phil made a face at him and I laughed a bit too much causing me to snort. I covered my face hoping they wouldn't hear.
"Aw, that's adorable!" Linda gushed. I smiled shyly at everyone.
"Never heard that laugh before," Angus said.
"Guess it comes out on special occasions," I said embarrassed. He studied me a minute then smiled.
"Interesting."
"Alright mates, let's get this film started before we all fall asleep on it," Brian said sitting on the couch with Phil. "Phil, go put it on."
"Why can't you do it?"
"I just sat down." Phil sighed and wiped his hands with a napkin before sticking the tape in the VCR.
"Are there any VCRs in the future Hannah?" Phil asked.
"Some people have them, but not as much as they used to."
"Which movie is this?" Linda asked.
"The Exorcist," Phil said smiling to himself.
"It's not that scary movie from the seventies is it?"
"Come on Linda, it can't be that bad. Ask Hannah, she's probably seen it." Everyone turned to look at me.
"It depends who's watching. Personally it wasn't too bad," I shrugged.
"Do you need me to hold your hand Linda?" Malcolm asked.
"Of course not, I'll be fine."
"Do you need me to hold your hand Malcolm?" Brian laughed.
"Sure," he laughed in return.
"Alright everyone, movie's started," Phil said. Cliff got up from his spot at the table and ran to join us. Phil turned the lights out and let the film play.
"What sort of film is this?" asked Linda burying her head in her husband's neck. He held her close to him.
"I'm no doctor," Phil said. "but I don't think her head's supposed to twist like that."
"Great choice Phil, you're scarin' the ladies!" Brian told him.
"What? Mal's fine!" Phil smiled.
"Ah piss off Rudd," Malcolm answered.
"And it ain't me flyin' around like that, I ain't scarin' anyone."
"Look at Lin, she's scared half to death!" said Brian.
"You want to take a break Linda?" Phil called over. Linda lifted her head.
"I'm not scared, I can watch it to the end," she said boldly.
"Well we're pausing it anyway, I need to piss," Phil said stopping the film and going to the bathroom.
"You sure you're okay Linda?" Ellen asked concerned.
"Sure I'm sure. Why wouldn't I be?"
"You're hiding behind your husband."
"So, Mal smells nice," Linda said smiling at him. Angus choked a little on the soda he had.
"You're not possessed too, are ya' Linda?" he joked.
"Very funny Angus."
"Yeah Angus, I shower, brush, groom-"
"All once a year," Angus finished for him.
"Takes a slob to know a slob," Malcolm muttered. Angus shook his head and ignored him. He turned to me and ruffled my hair.
"How you holdin' up?"
"'M alright. It's scary but I've seen it twice already," I answered.
"Twice?!" Linda asked. "Are you made of stone?" I shrugged. Phil came back out and we finished the rest of the film. Poor Linda was still scared but at least Ellen was okay. If she was scared she sure didn't show it.
"Are you sure you can't stay up?" Malcolm asked as I walked upstairs.
"I've already stayed up Mal, it's one in the morning," I replied.
"Alright, have a good sleep. And welcome back." I continued up the stairs to my room and immediately fell asleep.
Angus rolled over on the bed in a daze. His panting was slowing down but his heart was racing. Not to mention his mind. Ellen lay beside him in a similar state. It was past two in the morning after everybody had already gone to bed. The summer heat was intensified as the leftover passion washed over both of them. They'd have opened a window, but the walls were paper thin as it was. Angus closed his eyes. "Oh God," he panted.
Ellen smiled a little. "You've been practicing haven't you?" Angus laughed.
"Yeah, that's it."
"Guess playing the guitar helps."
Later after they returned in some proper attire, Ellen got into bed next to her husband. "Better go to sleep, I've got to help Hannah go shopping tomorrow."
"Where ya' going'?" Angus asked drinking his water.
"Probably downtown somewhere. You know her better than I, what does she like?"
"You're asking me advice on a lady's fashion taste?" he smiled.
"I'm serious, I need to know."
"Okay, okay, uh gee, tee shirts? Jeans? I don't know."
"What did she wear last time she was here?"
"It was winter here and snowing last time, usually a sweater dress."
"Tee shirts and sweaters. Sounds like you," Ellen teased. Angus smiled to himself.
"Some ways."
"Not all?" He shrugged. "Any way like me?"
"Some."
"Some?"
"Mhm." Ellen shook her head and kissed him.
"Goodnight Mr. Vague."
"Goodnight." Angus sat up in bed a while longer. Hannah was very much her own person. While she shared similar interests and quirks, she was very individual. He smiled as he remembered her beating him at pool or when he took the blue blanket away from her. His expression faltered when he recalled their last night together. That look in her eyes...he'd never seen her so scared. And he caused it. No-she said it wasn't his fault. It's been happening forever, he wasn't to blame. Angus lay back in guilt. He terrified her that night no matter what she said. Of all nights to be their last, that one. She probably didn't even hear what he whispered to her.
His throat tightened. He meant it. He still meant it. And at this rate, he'd always mean it. But he couldn't do anything about it now. His wife sighed in her sleep next to him, confirming his point. Angus sighed in response. He'd have to forget her. Any feelings for her were lost in 1975 and would have to stay there.
He had to let Hannah go.
