Part 2: Chapter 2
Sensei Wu-
The next morning I get up early as usual. "Lloyd's training must be our first and foremost priority, so I believe we need to find a larger place to train him." I tell my students. "Check if there is a place in town. I'll be out today, so when I return I would like to know how the day went." "Yes Sensei." the reply in unison. With that they finish up there breakfast and depart.
Cole-
We find A place called 'Grand Sensei Dareth's mojo dojo.' "Hello, anybody here?" I call out as we enter. Then a semi-heavy-set man dressed in a brown western type suit jumps out of beaded curtains. "Hi-Yah!" he shouts as he stands on one leg. I'm starting to regret coming in here in the first place. "Welcome to Grand Sensei Dareth's mojo dojo, do you think you you're mojo enough to join my dojo? Because I Dare-th you to join." Yep, defenitly starting to regret coming in here. "We actually would like to use the dojo to train a student of ours." Kai says. "Well, it might cost you-" "any discount for heros? You know we saved ninjago city." Jay asks. "I believe Lord Garmadon saved ninjago city and correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe I'm looking at at Lord Garmadon." "Yeah there's been a giant mistake over that-" "what were saying Dareth is that we need to use your dojo." "alright, if you can defeat me in hand to hand combat then I'll let you use the dojo." Dareth tells Kai. Dareth continues to drone on until Kai uses Spinjistu on him, now maybe that was worth waiting for. and just like that we were granted access to the dojo.
We exited with newfound confidence, "Now, how should we celebrate?" Jay asked clasping his hands together. "and what exactly are we celebrating?" I ask lightheartedly. "I don't know nothing, anything, how about to a new home and a new traing area." "sounds good to me." Hacthi says with a smile as he looks to me. "what did you have in mind then?" I deside on asking him. "how about some pizza!" he said. "mmm, I haven't had pizza in awhile." I heard Devon say. "what? When's the last time you've had it?" I ask him as we make our way to the pizza shop. "about a year or so ago." he tells me blanely. "WHAT!?" Jay nearly freaks out. "I'd might die without pizza for that long!" "Master Crevan ordered it a few times for us but it was difficult to get it since we lived so far away." "the only reason you remember that is because you only had it the 4 or 5 times when we were living with Crevan." Kade says jokingly nudging him with her elbow. That's when I deside to speak up. "Wait so you mean to tell us that before you were trained by Crevan you NEVER had pizza?" "yes." "Never?" "never." "wow I guess that just... Is a little stunning." "Yeah where did you live? I don't know a single place that dosen't have at least one pizza shop. And if there is such a place I would never want to ba stranded there." Jay exasperates as we sit down in a booth, waiting for our order to be taken.
Jay-
What kinda guy is he only ever had pizza 4 or 5 times! That just compleatly blows my mind, all of us LOVE pizza so what was Devon's problem? "Seriously Devon what's your problem?" "I never said I didn't like pizza, just that I hadn't had it many times." "why, I mean why didn't you have it before training with Crevan?" Kai asks. "I was living in a priory training to become a monk. All we really ate was noodles or what we grew in the garden." he said with a laugh before chomping down on his slice. I took a bite too, "So, even before you decided to become a monk you hadn't had the stuff?" I said half joking with my mouth full. Devon choked on what he was eating. Then set it back down on his plate, "um no." "really?!" "uh...yeah." "Really, what did yo-" "I'll be back, I need some fresh air." he said cutting me off and standing to leave. We exchanged glances with each other. "what was that?" I ask. "Devon gets like that whenever you ask him about life before the 'journey to monkhood'." Kade said sarcastically yet she had a twinge of consern for her leafy friend, as did I. "Devon actually never talks about life past the priory, like it doesn't exist to him." Avery said as she twisted the cup on the table. "And he probably doesn't feel any better having it mentioned to us, so early in our stages of friendship." Zane remarked solemnly. "I'm going to go outside." I tell them, I want to make peace with Devon. Granted I didn't know that it would make him feel uncomfortable, but still I don't want any rifts in our friendship. I exit the pizzeria, "Devon, I-" where was Devon? "Devon?". I stumble back inside. "Guys, I can't find Devon, hes not outside!" I look at the worry on there faces. "Has this ever happened before?" Cole asks. "Never, he's the only one of us who actually got his head on his shoulders." Kade says shaking her head. "maybe, he's gone back to the house, or maybe the dojo." Avery says with her voice full of anxiety. "We'll split up and check the dojo the house and any other places we can think of and if we don't find him we'll meet back at the house in a hour." Kai tells us.
Hacthi-
After a whole hour of searching and to no avial, we talk to the others and find out where they looked and brainstormed any other place he could be. That's when Sensei Wu walks in and overhears us talking. "what made him run away in the first place?" Jay speaks up, "I asked him about his past... Before the priory." Sensei clenches his teeth, "I didn't mean to upset him, I just wanted to talk." I can start to tell that Jay's starting to blame himself over this. (When we were searching he was looking in trash cans.) Sensei bit his lower lip "his life before the priory is something that Devon doesn't want to remember, you might be able to find him at priory." Wu turns to leave. That's when Jay speaks again, but this time with worry choking in his throught. "Devon's past couldn't be that bad could it Sensei?" Sensei tuns back to us with his eyes holding Devon's painful secrets, then he leaves. "Alright who knows the way to Devon's priory?" Cloe asked taking charge. "I do." I said walking towards the door. "Follow me."
Devon-
I reached the outskirts of the priory, here far beyond the reaches of civilization, in tall mountains hidden within the clouds. I came to the front gate, I stared up at the giant double doors. when I heard a voice from down the walk that wraps around the outside wall "Devon!?" I turn my head to see my old friend quickening his pace to reach me. "Kurtis!" I exclaim. When he reaches me he wraps his arms around me in a hug, then slightly bows. "And what do I owe the pleasure of seeing my heroic friend?" Kurt was referring to me and my ninja status. I let out a little laugh, "actually I was hopeing to speak with the Father abbot." "Oh, the abbot will return the day after tomorrow, he has gone for spiritual enlightenment, I am sorry you came all this way for nothing." he said gloomily. "it is alright, I just need some encouragement from the father, I feel like I am loosing myself again. Would I be to much trouble if I were to stay here untill he returned?" Kurt's face beamed, "of course, there is always a place here for you my brother." "thanks Kurt." I say as I swallow hard then turn, he grabs my shoulder "Devon is there something I should know?" "... I am fine, thank you." I pull away from him and head towards the half roofed patio arena.
Jay-
What have I done? I don't know why he got upset enough to leave, I didn't even have a clue that he would be offended. I was really starting to like Devon hopeing that we would grow to be good friends, but will that happen now? Well, I hope so... I was suddenly snapped out of thought when I heard Hacthi speaking "alright we're here." I looked up I saw massive scarlet colored double doors with golden accents placed within a humongous concrete wall that seemed to wrap its way around something the size of a small village. "well what do we do, knock?" I joked trying to lighten the mood. "I believe we can use the doorbell." I was taken back by Zane's words as he then pushed a little, almost concealed, golden button. then I herd the sound of a gong, then one of the doors slowly open. "hello, can I help you?" "um, we believe that a friend of ours is here." Cole says." and whom might that be?" "Devon," says a voice from behind the man at the door "I'll take them to him. Thank you Jayden." the man at the door opens the door just enough for us to come in behind him is a man with raven black hair that's parted in the middle that hangs down. He wears red underneath a brown cloak. "My name is Kurtis, I am a friend of Devon's, follow me." we walk through the gate, and as we head towards a little garden thing. "I fear something has made Devon uneasy and a bit swayed." Kurtis says uneasily. "I'm afraid that might be my fault." "Do not worry, just try to make peace..." then he turns and bites the inside of his cheek, "and try not to provoke him, he just seems to be grieving. But If the case that he attacks you defend yourself." Kurtis seemed almost as worried as I am, and that's deffently not a good sign.
We pass through a little overhang and enter to what looks like some sort of training grounds. Before anyone of us made a sound Devon said "Why did you follow me?" It sounded like he was choking on tears and pure rage. "because you are our brother." I tell him trying to be comforting. But at that moment Devon's eyes snap open and if looks could kill I would have keeled over dead.
Cole-
Once Devon opened his eyes Jay seemed to shudder. "Then why bring up the past!?" Devon said as he jumped up from his cross-legged position. "because I didn't know it was a sensitive topic, I'm sorry." "You're sorry? You're sorry!? Then why didn't you tell me?" "I tryed Devon, but when I went outside you were already gone." "Jay, your the funny guy right? Well I'm not laughing! Come on Jay!" Devon says as he shoves Jay in the chest. "Wait? What!" Jay cries. Devon clenches his fists and walks over to a stand that's on uneven wheels, there are weapons hanging all over it, he pulls it out of the shadows. Then he crosses the floor and pulls out an identical one "Devon, I-" "Jay," Devon starts through gritted teeth. "you're going to fight me, Jay, you have shamed me! Why Jay, why?" the last part was almost a whisper I can see his eyes growing glossy. "Devon, I didn't know!" "it's to late for that. If you win I'll come back with you, but if I win you will leave without me and my past will stay here with me." "Devon!" Jay pleads. "Make your choice, I've made mine." Devon throughs Jay a pair of Nunchucks and Devon picks up daggers, a toffa, and his golden whip. "No turning back." Jay whispers.
Avery-
I'm really actually surprised by Devon's outburst of anger, he's always telling us that violence never solved anything. But I can see that Devon's upset and for whatever reason, he's lashing out. I'm pretty sure everyone else could see it to.
"Devon, you don't have to do this!" Jay said, but Devon did not reply. Suddenly Devon sent a dagger flying towards Jay's head. The projectile whizzed past his cheek and embedded itself in the wooden post behind his head. Devon through two more in his direction, Jay's reflexes maneuvered his body away from the potential danger. But this only made Devon grow hot with anger. Devon then pulled a sword off the rack next to him and formed his blue green tornado and headed in the lightning ninja's direction, Jay ran towards his identical rack and picked up his katana. He held it out in front of him as the turquoise whirlwind drew closer. As the sword dips into the spinning turquoise tornado and clangs agains Devon's. "Devon, what's wrong? This isn't like you!" "how would you know Jay? Maybe this is exactly what I am!" Devon almost sneers through gridded teeth. Devon tightens his grip on his sword and changes his stance so he's closer to his sword. He thrusts his sword upward, flinging Jays sword away from him. Then Devon turned back to Jay, or rather where Jay was standing a moment earlier. Devon turned around to see Jay on the far side of the room. Devon's sidesweeping bangs hung down over his eyes. Jay starts swinging his pair of Nunchucks back and forth as he readied his stance. "Devon," Jay called from across the room. "Are you angry at me or yourself?" Devon's face grew red and his eyes puffy. He through his katana like a dart towards him. This also implanted itself in a wooden post. Devon looked at Jay who was in the crouching position after rolling away from the attack. Devon gridded his teeth. Then he threw three daggers in Jay's direction but as he jumped up one of the little knives got caught on his sleeve pinning him to the wall. Devon pulled the toffa from his belt and charged towards him. Once reaching him Devon held Jay's shoulders back against the wall with his right forearm. Devon held back his other arm with the toffa in it. "Devon, you are my brother and whatever you're fighting right now, I know I'm indirectly you target. And I'm sorry for ever sticking my nose in your problems." At that very moment Devon's grim expression melted and his lips curled into a frown. Tears welled up in his eyes and he shut them tight trying to control himself, Devon's fist punched the wall next to Jay's head as the toffa stuck. Devon's body when limp and collapsed on the floor. A choking sob escaped his lips. Jay pulled himself free and crouched down next to him. "Devon, Please, please, tell me what's wrong." Jay said consolingly. "if you knew my past before priory. If you knew what kind of person I was." Devon said with tears rolling down his cheeks and leaving tear drops on his tunic. "Devon, we're your family, it's ok, just start from the beginning if that would be easier." Devon took a deep breath then began.
"well, as far back as I can remember, nothing was ever peaceful at home." Devon tried to keep his composure. "My father was an alcoholic and he beat my mother and me. It, it was really tough for us. One day it was to much for her... and she took her own life." a few gasps were heard. "Three long weeks after that my father died from alcohol poisoning. If she only held out, a little longer." Tears soaked Devon's shaggy hair, Devon clenched his jaw then swallowed hard. "I grew angry and violent. By the time I was about 14, I attempted to rob a bank. Two people were injured, one almost died..." Devon swallowed again trying to hold back tears. Kai's face was distraught, Cole was getting teary. "My lawyer, tried to send me Darkly's school for bad boys instead of a juvenile detention center." Kade's lips quivered as tears streaked her face. "but the father abbot came in and persuaded them to send me here, to the priory, he saw good in me that I never did and sometimes I still don't see it, my chi is sometimes unbalanced when those memories come up into my heart and mind. I did not mean to grow violent Jay," Devon took a deep breath and let out a few more tears. "Devon, I'm not upset or angry about it I'm just glad you're ok, we're all glad you're ok." Devon spread a smile across his face. "The past is the past," Jay started "but there is always the future." Devon finished. Just then he suddenly began to glow. The teal shades of light burst from him, he rose off the floorboards, I was stunned in amazement! The light shone through his sleeves and from his eyes the swirling mass of light was almost blinding. All of the nearby patches of grass and vines sprouted little white and yellow flowers. As he returned back to the ground we stared yet smiling with our now dry eyes. "Was that my full potential?" Devon said in disbelief. "Yeah, does that mean that none of of you reached your full potential yet?" Kai said as he turned and pointed at us. "No, we never really left the monastery when living with Crevan, so we never really had a chance to attain that goal." Kade said. "Well we can definitely help you with that." Kai said leaning his elbow on Hacthi. Hacthi smiled "Let's all get back home." Home is just the right word, for a family like us.
