Twenty eight
"My night has mostly involved me being chased by various exhibits who are working with your brother to take over the world", Larry grumbled as he walked closer. "I should add nineteen twenties gangsters as well as Napoleon and some Russian dude to the list of people to stay away from. They have joined forces with your brother, who is a horrible person I might add".
"Ah yes", Ahk nodded as his face fell into seriousness. "I am afraid that he has been like that since birth and my best attempts to cure it ended up with my murder. I apologise". Next to him, Damien hid a snigger at the sarcasm in the pharaohs tone.
"Excuse me Mr Daley but who are these friends of yours? Mind introducing us?" The redhead interrupted. She had an old American accent that Damien hadn't heard since he was alive. Suddenly it clicked on why she was so familiar. Suddenly the woollen flight jacket she was wearing complete with tight pants and high boots made sense.
"Amelia Earhart!" He exclaimed with a wide grin. He stepped forwards to extend his hand. "The first woman to fly solo over the Atlantic. Amazing. Glad to make your acquaintance. My name is Dr Damien Jean, archeologist and researcher-"
"Of ancient Egypt", Amelia finished for him as she took his hand and shook it vigourously. "You discovered that Pharaoh's tomb back in the year thirty. I remembered reading about that in the papers. I always wanted to go and see the exhibition but I never found the time. It's wonderful to meet you".
"And I you", Damien beamed as their hands separated. "You were truly an inspiration to so many people. Brilliant work. You really must tell me all about your travels sometime".
"Oh if only you tell me about your excavations Dr Jean", she grinned back. Her eyes widened as she glanced at Ahkmenrah. "And who is your handsome friend with no shoes?"
Ahk was watching her with a patient expression. "I am Ahkmenrah, fourth king of the fourth kings. I have heard tales of your exploits as well, you seem like a fine warrior". Amelia blinked in confusion at the greeting but smiled anyway and held out a hand. Ahk looked down at it then gently took it and gave it a small shake. Damien grinned, he had spent ages teaching Ahk modern greetings and it was nice to see those lessons paying off.
Amelia nodded and turned her attention back to Damien. "You're a mighty fine looker yourself. I never expected you to be so young Dr Jean. You simply must tell me the story of discovering your Pharaoh". Damien nodded. At his side, he noted a Ahk relax slightly at being referred to as Damien's.
Larry interrupted however. The man had been looking around at the moving paintings. "This is new", he commented. "Photographs was one thing. But paint moving is definitely new".
"Yes. I find it rather strange and fantastical", Damien added.
"But you're from a photo", Larry gave him a look.
"That is true. But I was once human, a moment frozen in time. Paint is interpretations of humans, which is vastly different". He turned to look around and paused. Three Egyptian soldiers with their spears raised were approaching from the corridor to the right. When he turned to the left, he spotted three more.
"Oh dear", Amelia muttered as the soldiers drew closer and the group all took a step back. Damien backed into Ahk as the four of them were backed into a corner. Larry grabbing her by the arm and pulling Amelia closer as the sharp spears grew near. Three soldiers each coming to encircle both pairs, spears separating Ahk and the tablet.
One of the soldiers shouted something and Ahk visibly bristled. "I command you to stop", he ordered loudly in English before switching languages and repeating it. The three soldiers advancing on him and Damien hesitated. They paused but the other three advancing on Larry and Amelia pressed on.
"What do we do?" Damien asked worriedly. He didn't like the look of those sharp points.
In his corner, Larry had reached into a painting and grabbed a pitchfork from a man's hand, shoving the tablet in it's place. "Trade you". Then he was spinning the pitchfork in his hands. "Ha! Back off! Just back off!"
"When I say run, you run", Ahk muttered quietly. The pharaoh hadn't taken his eyes off the men in front of them.
"What?" Damien hissed back. "I'm not leaving you".
"Never send a boy to do a woman's job", Amelia exclaimed as she grabbed the pitchfork from Larry's hands. "I spent two weeks spear hunting with a tribe in Micronesia". She threw the pitchfork and the soldier caught it with one hand. Amelia paused. "The Micronesians had slower reflexes".
That was when Ahk struck. It reminded Damien of a snake as the dark haired man dove down and under the spear point before rising and elbowing a soldier in the face as he tore the spear from his grip. The other soldiers had barely turned their spear points round before Ahk had his own up and aimed between them and Damien. The spear steady in his hands and expression set as he levelled the point up. A shout rose and Damien turned to watch as Larry and Amelia dove into a large black and white photograph. Three soldiers followed after them.
"Run!" Ahk's shout made Damien jump. His feet were moving before his mind could catch up, diving right and round a corner. He heard the soldiers shout as Ahk knocked them all back with his spear and then the Pharaoh was running after him. The spear still in his hands. Damien reached out and Ahk reached back. Their hands interlocking as they put on an extra burst of speed. He gasped and they dove round a statue, vaulted over a robot skidded round a corner. The soldiers still on their tails.
"They're gaining on us", Damien called as they dove round another corner. Ahk was faster and his hand was tight as he pulled the blonde along. Damien just about keeping up, shoes slippery on the polished floor. A shout behind them and then the whoosh of air. Damien cried out as he was pulled sharply to the right and around a stone fountain. The spear that a second ago would have lodged itself in his chest, clattered on the stone. Above the fountain, three cherubs began shouting.
"Ahk!" He exclaimed as his feet slipped. Shoes having no grip on the polished stone. He went down, knees hitting the floor with a crack and their joined hand's pulling Ahk down with him. The two of them hit the ground in a sprawl of limbs, the spear skidding out of his hands.
"Dami", Ahk gasped. "Are you alright?"
"Ouch", he groaned in reply. That fall had hurt. His knees throbbed and there was the stinging feeling of friction burn on his elbows but he pushed himself up stiffly. "We need to go", he panted. Kahmenrah's soldiers had been held up by the stone cherubs. The three toddlers with wings and lyres smacking the soldiers with their stone instruments. It wouldn't hold them back for long though.
"Ahk, are you okay?"
Ahkmenrah was wincing as he tried to get up. Damien was at his side in an instant. He took in how the man was cradling one of his arms and winced. His wrist was red and swelling. "Its nothing bad, just a sprain", he huffed as Damien pulled him up onto his feet by the shoulders. The blonde scooped up the spear just as a shout echoed down the corridor. He glanced round to se the soldiers running towards them. Damien's eyes scoured the corridor. There was an emergency exit to his left. He pulled Ahk towards it.
"Use this as a sling", he offered as he pulled his jacket off and tried to loop it round Ahk's neck. The pharaoh hissed in pain as he clumsily turned the material into a sling.
"Dami, they're getting closer", Ahk alerted. Damien glanced at the door again. It was one of those classic push down doors to exit. No way to open from the outside.
He pushed down on the leaver and door popped open just as a loud screeching alarm turned on overhead. "Come on!" He and Ahk ran through, Damien steering Ahk round the corner of the building and pining him to the stone as they hid. Ahk was frowning at his arm, visibly annoyed that he was injured rather than in pain. Damien brushed a hand over his cheek and those green eyes lifted to his. "When they come through then we run back inside and pull the doors shut after us", he stated.
"We will have to be quick", Ahk smiled. The night was cold and the breeze made them both shiver in their shirts.
"Yes. You go first, you can't grab the doors with your arm", Damien muttered. Then the soldiers burst through the fire doors. He peaked round the corner as the three men stopped and looked around. A few words were exchanged as the two of them held their breaths. Then the soldiers were running to the right and away from them.
Ahkmenrah and Damien broke into a run. Ahk first as they headed for the doors. Damien glanced back to see that the soldiers had spotted them and were in pursuit. He sped up, spear in one hand. Then Ahk was through the doors and turning back. Green eyes were wide in concern as Damien ran towards him. Then he was through the doors and pulling them shut behind himself. The spear clanged against the metal as they shoved it through the push down handles to barricade the door closed.
The alarm above them cut off just as the Egyptian soldiers slammed into the wood. The doors rattled but refused to open. Damien sighed in relief as he felt Ahk sag slightly at his side. "Good plan beloved", he gasped as they both tried to regain their breaths.
