Part 15: Getting into it with Aizawa

The students were distracted from the ongoing mystery of their visitors by the upcoming Work Studies. They were selecting different heroes to work under, and trying to get into the best fighting shape. Todoroki and Bakugo still would not be participating due to being in remedial, though that was ending before too long.

Iida informed the class, when he had a chance to address all of them, that it looked like Miss Likstar and Mr. West were not spies, because of what she said to Todoroki. Todoroki wasn't sure he was supposed to have shared that, but now it was too late to stop Iida from saying it. Bakugo acted like he was bored by the whole thing, but Kirishima noted:

"Hey man, you've never actually said what you think? You think they're spies?"

"You idiots," Bakugo said scowling darkly. "Those two jackasses can't be spies. Spies would spend less time picking stupid fights with random losers."

"Didn't they pick a fight with you?" Jiro said flatly.

"I  challenged them, dumba--" Bakugo said. Strictly speaking, he only challenged Likstar. West did not interest him (perhaps because he knew he'd never beat his speed, but he would have rather died than admit that to anyone).

"I agree now that I've had time to think it over," Tsuyu spoke up. "It doesn't seem likely spies would draw so much attention to themselves. I think they might actually be vigilantes. Some of what they've said about heroes sounds more like people who work outside the law."

"But that means they're good people, right?" Kaminari said, nervously. "Not villains."

"Some people think vigilantes are basically villains," Sato pointed out. "And, they might not be trying to help heroes, you know. There's other groups besides the LOV who don't like heroes...and they doesn't really seem to like heroes."

"Ah, its so hard to tell," Aoyama said dramatically. "I would prefer to like Miss Likstar, since she speaks French, but their actions? Fighting villains? It's not tres bien."

"Wait, them fighting villains is the problem?" Todoroki spoke up, surprising some of the others.

"Well, yeah, that's not good," Uraraka said. "I mean, I know they helped Yao-Momo, but, they should have just gotten the pros."

"It was reckless to do what they did, what if it backfired?" Iida pointed out.

"Doing it twice makes it seem like they really don't care about the law," Sero said. "I mean, once, maybe they just thought it was self defense, but twice?"

"You think they should have run for help instead?" Todoroki said, oddly.

"With West's speed, he certainly could have gotten a real pro to handle it, not dealt with it himself," Iida said. "As we were told before, unlicensed people have no authority to hurt a villain."

"Wait, they didn't hurt them," Momo spoke up now. She'd been trying to stay out of it, but she felt she had to correct this.

"Wait, how did they get you away from them, then?" Midoriya asked. "I thought they fought."

"No, all that happened was they shoved the Dabi guy back, and hit the Toga woman--maybe just knocked the knife out of her hand, they didn't hurt them."

"Technically, even doing that much with their quirks was illegal," Tsuyu said.

"Hey, let's not be mean here," Mina said. "Maybe they don't know that's the law. It sure seems like Mr. West comes from somewhere in America where quirks aren't regulated as much. Maybe the Midwest, you know, everyone has guns there too."

{This was more of a stereotype than a fact she actually knew, Mina assumed the USA of the movies was basically true to life.}

[Also, if anyone's wondering, no, I don't have canon proof the USA operates the same way in this world, it's just a guess that works better for this story. Only clarifying because some people don't know when fan fic is branching off from the source material on world building facts, and I do that quite a bit.]

"If that's the case, we have neglected our duty as heroes by not informing them," Iida said. "We must rectify that."

"Wait," Momo spoke up. "I don't think they are vigilantes... I mean, not like you're thinking of. And I'm not sure that warning would go over well. Won't they just be insulted by it after the questions we asked them before?"

"I don't see why," Ojiro said. "If we aren't accusing them of anything, why would they be insulted?"

Todoroki had a feeling Momo was warning them more because she knew what was going to happen rather than she was just afraid of it--and he himself didn't think it was such a great idea, but the rest of the class (save for Bakugo, who gave no opinion) all agreed with Iida. And Hagakure went to fetch them.

They came dressed like they were going to work out. They tended to use the gym when the students were least likely to be in it, currently.

"What's up?" Wally asked, looking a little nervous about it.

Iida explained that the class did not think they were spies, and they looked pleasantly surprised. Then Shine looked right at Todoroki and made an expression like she knew something. Todoroki stiffened up...wait... was it possible she knew he would repeat what she said...and had planned to have it be used to clear their name?... No, it was impossible, and why say it to him and not everyone if she intended that? He was being ridiculous even asking himself that.

"However, because of your strange behavior, we felt you should be warned about something else," Iida proceeded. "Are you perhaps vigilantes?"

Pause.

"Didn't you say those were guys who worked outside the law?" Wally asked. "I mean, basically, like at home, but not government supported?"

"You aren't government supported," Shine said.

"Yeah, but they don't stop us," Wally said.

"Yes, well, the government here does not support vigilantes," Iida said. "In fact, they are basically considered villains, even if they mean well, operating your quirk in that setting without a license is illegal."

"Straight up illegal?" Shine said.

That was not what the student wanted to hear. They had hoped she was at least aware of it, it seemed Mina was right.

"Miss Likstar, if you recklessly go off and use your quirks without a license, it's basically acting like villains," Tsuyu said.

Kirishima visibly winced there, and they noticed it.

"Are you serious?" Shine said, with a completely bewildered expression.

"Uh...yes..." Iida was a little thrown off by that reaction. "Why is that so hard to accept? It's the only way to control quirk usage."

"I remember you mentioned that before, but I didn't think you'd go so far as to say it was evil to fight a bad guy without a license." Wally said, befuddled.

"No one said it was evil," Tokoyami said.

"She just said it was acting a like a villain," Wally gestured at Tsuyu.

"It is," Tsuyu insisted. "But villains aren't all evil."

"Weird, I usually think of villains as being pretty evil," Wally said, really confused now.

"I'm sorry, I don't follow," Shine said. "Are you referring to our brush with the LOV? They attacked first, you know."

"That doesn't matter," Midoriya said. "It's still illegal... we could lose our chances of becoming heroes over that...I don't know what would happen to you, but you shouldn't keep doing that kind of stuff."

"We know you didn't mean to," Mina said, "so we're just warning you now. I'm surprised UA didn't."

"Yeah, funny that never came up," Shine said in a tone that implied she didn't find it funny at all.

"I'm sure it was just an oversight, they were worried about Yaoyerozu," Iida said.

"That's a big oversight..." Wally muttered.

"So, you understand right? You're not insulted?" Ojiro said, for clarity.

Momo pursed her lips. They didn't look happy.

"I appreciate you warning us," Shine said. "Clearly, you're concerned about it. And that's nice of you, on the tail end of thinking we were spies, I suppose vigilantes is a compliment by comparison."

Her tone was hard to read, but Momo had never heard her use it before, and she began to feel something like afraid. Wally was silent...and that was weird too.

"But, there's no need to worry about us," Shine finished. "We're not kids, we know what we want to do. And frankly, the legality of the situation never entered my head."

That was a strange statement to make. No one knew what to take from it.

"Well, we're happy to help," Iida said, he was not very good at reading cues.

"So how far does this go?" Shine asked, in a different tone. "If a villain, as you say were to come up and stab one of you in front of me, should I just call for help?"

"I suppose that would be the most responsible thing to do," Iida agreed.

Light flashed in Shine's eyes, the same way it had before, but now almost everyone saw it. They blinked. What was that?

Wally glanced at her, but he didn't seem surprised at all, more like that had gotten his intention.

"Sunshine? Are you sure that you want to do this now?" he said in slow voice. "They're just kids."

Most of the class backed up right then. "What are you going to do?" Jiro asked dryly. "What was that?"

"What?" Shine asked.

"Your eyes," Kaminari said.

"Oh? Oh, that's back, huh?" Shine looked at Wally.

"Yeah," he said. "Looks a little different, but yeah."

"I see," she folded her arms. "Well, what would you do?"

Wally rubbed his head. "You know... I got nothing, go ahead."

"What are you going to do to us?" Mineta squeaked, now totally freaked out.

"Me? Nothing," Shine said. "Why would I do something to you? Wally is just concerned I'll regret it if I say what I'm thinking right now, but I'll endeavor to control myself. I won't talk about how insane all that sounded, and how much like propaganda to control quirks. I just want to know why the heck a hero student is telling me that best thing to do would be nothing."

Silence while some of them reeled inwardly from how wrong saying all that out loud was, and they almost looked around for a teacher to be coming in to break this up... a few of them were uncomfortable that they'd acted on the same thinking in the past.

Todoroki sat up, fully alert now.

And Bakugo was sullenly staring at Shine.

"Getting help is not nothing, Miss Likstar," Iida said.

"Uh, and the hypothetical stabber is just going to stand here while I do that?" Shine said. "Real cute, it's not like it takes only half a second to kill someone. Hesitating for even a moment could be the end of the matter, let alone stopping to get help. Something I'd think any hero course worth its title would have explained to you on day 1, but instead, I'm hearing that you've been told to run. Wow... just wow..."

"Miss Likstar, I think you misunderstood," Tsuyu sad. "There's a reason only pros should handle this stuff. People can be killed for getting involved without the proper training."

"I see now, this is why they didn't thank us..." Shine said to Wally, like she wasn't even listening.

Wally nodded. He seemed to be speechless.

"We're not ungrateful..." Momo tried to help. "But they're not wrong, it's best not to act out of turn."

"I'd like to see you look someone in the eye who got hurt because the pros didn't show up on time, and give them that excuse," Shine said savagely. "What a load of crap... I can't listen to this anymore. Excuse me," she ran out the door.

"Wait! Where is she going?" Iida said, alarmed that she was gong to do something rash.

"For a walk," Wally said, "I think I should do that too... need to think...later kids." he was gone the next moment.

"Well, that went well," Kaminari said sarcastically. "Should've listened to Yao-Momo."

"I don't like how they reacted," Tsuyu said. "It's not going to reflect well on UA if they go off and do this again, and the school doesn't need any more bad PR."

"Perhaps if you started with that..." Momo said.

"Momo, I didn't see you suggesting that before?!" Kaminari said.

"Hey, " Todoroki spoke up, scaring him. "Let's not point fingers...there was something strange about that."

"Yeah," Midoriya said. "It wasn't just that they didn't agree, it was like they never heard it before. At all. Anywhere."

"I think Miss Likstar responded a little too quickly for that to be the case," Aoyama said. "No way she was that shocked, but she did look disgusted...hmm...I wonder, could she be part of one of those underground groups that don't believe in quirk registration?"

"They don't have any record here... that would make sense," Sato mused.

"None of you believe their story?" Momo said, as if that was surprising to her.

"And you do?" Mineta said. "Please, it's preposterous. Other worlds don't exist."

"If they did," Todoroki said. "That would account for their shock...but only some of it."

"Well, I don't like it," Kaminari shuddered. "If they talk like that outside the school, we'll all be in trouble."

"They aren't that stupid," Momo insisted. "You aren't being fair to them."

"Really Momo, you aren't the least bothered by what just happened?" Jiro asked.

Momo hesitated. "I was surprised, yes but it wasn't so unlike other things they've said, and they haven't exposed UA yet. I just think, you all might be overreacting slightly."

"Let's all clam down," Iida advised. "I will ask Mr. Aizawa what he wants us to do. In the meantime, we have assignments we should be attending to."

"Man, I won't be able to concentrate after that," Kaminari grumbled.

Iida did go to Aizawa, it was perhaps lucky for the DJs he did not go to Nezu. Aizawa heard the story with a very unreadable expression. "Did they tell you to act outside the law?"

"No, sir, they never said we should do that," Iida said. "Come to think of it, they never said anything about us personally..."

"Then you wouldn't say they are inciting you to break the rules?" Aizawa said.

"Not...directly..." Iida hadn't even considered that, "Did you think so, sir?"

"I'll handle it from here," Aizawa dodged, "Thank you Iida."

Shine and Wally went for a long walk to talk about the conversation.

/"Another couple kids with their heads on top

Just another stranger just another plot

Another track home where the city streets stop

Just another kid with another bored cop

Just another lemon into lemonade job

Just another rust and dust facade

Just another key stuck broken in the lock

Just another scarecrow choking on a cough

Oh come on!

It all feels so typical

Guess I'm looking for a miracle

Rise above it

I don't care what their telling me

We could be what we want to be

Rise above it

Listen up loud, listen up, listen here

Just because you're running

Doesn't mean that you're scared

Just because it's law doesn't mean it is fair

Never let another tell your soul what to fear

Here we go again give it one more try

Don't believe the system's on your side

Just another lover turned enemy fight

Just another blood and nicotine sky

Oh come on!...

Turn it up now, listen loud and clear

Just because you're present

Doesn't mean you're here"/

"The laws here are really something else," Wally said. "I mean... Maybe it's not as bad as it sounds..."

"No, Wally, I think it's worse," Shine was upset. "I can tell just by talking to them, we haven't even heard the half of it...ugh...I feel stupid for running out like that though, they must have thought I was freaked out."

"I just though I'd say something dumb if I stuck around," Wally mused.

"Yeah... but we'd better go back," Shine said.

"Uh, honey," Wally said. "About that... do you think we should be staying at this school? It's starting to seem like a real clash of...uh, personalities is coming. We can't keep doing this, can we?"

"What, nothing bad happened yet." Shine said. "And normally, I'd be the one saying that and you'd be the one saying I shouldn't freak out...Oh... I see... this is some PTSD for you huh, babe?

"It does feel a little ...familiar," Wally hedged. "I hope...uh... what if they want to arrest us."

[If you know the events on JLU this is referring to and comment it, instant like from me.]

"Hey, remember, we're nobody here," Shine said. "They won't be coming for you first...or me... but they might come for UA. I can't say for sure that I trust this school, but that would upset the students a good deal. I don't think that we want that."

"We aren't exactly being welcomed here, though," Wally sighed. "It's... a little rough, honestly. I could take one or two of them hating us...but are we dong something wrong?"

"Ah, Wally if we ask that now, we'll be asking it all day," Shine said. "If we don't see anything we did wrong off the bat, then it's no good obsessing over it. I've been too timid about this... I'm going to go back to my usual strategy, no more hiding in my room. Starting today, I'm going to be sitting in that lounge area when they get in, looking them right in the face." She made a fist of determination.

"Wow...right on," Wally was impressed. "Not backing down, that's pretty gutsy, hmm maybe you have a point..."

They got back to the dorms not long after that...only to find Todoroki waiting for them outside.

"Aren't you supposed to be training?" Shine asked.

"Aren't you supposed to be where we can see you?" Todoroki replied.

Shine smiled a little at the surprisingly snarky response.

"Were you waiting for us?" Wally asked.

"Yes," Todoroki apparently had no use for subtlety. "I have a question for you."

They waited.

"You didn't know about Stain, did you?" Todoroki said.

 "About who?" Shine said strangely.

"What stain?" Wally said. "There's a stain? I didn't spill nothing okay?"

"No, the hero killer," Todoroki said.

"Kid, I have no clue who you're talking about," Shine said.

Todoroki guessed she was being sincere. "All those things you said in there, and you don't know about that, and you didn't know about Bakugo being kidnapped... Did you expect that we'd all stop thinking you were a spy if you just acknowledged it?"

"I thought so," Shine admitted.

Todoroki looked angry. "You used me," he stood up. "You wanted me to tell everyone."

"You running your mouth was a 50-50 thing," Shine said, not backing down. "But I figured if you had any sense you'd see I couldn't be a spy if I was that incompetent at hiding it, and if you came around, the others would too. I didn't need you to tell them anything for it to matter, but thank you for being so forthright."

"You deliberately did that?" Todoroki was still mad. "Why? Why not just refute it openly?"

"Because that's no fun," Shine said.

"You..." Todoroki glared. "Never mind, I can't reason with a person like you," he turned.

"Todoroki," Shine said in quite a different voice that made him freeze. "Are people usually convinced if you tell them upfront something is not true?"

Todoroki paused to glance back at her. "Some people are."

"Does defending yourself generally win anyone over to your side?" Shine continued. "Or, are people on your side already and they sympathize more if you tell them the truth, while people who are not on your side will only hate and suspect you more if you do so. You seem smart enough, did you notice how everyone reacted? I'm willing to bet, most of them still don't trust us even now. I can tell who does. Now that you know the truth, you still don't trust me anymore, do you? If anything, you feel duped. But why don't you feel more foolish for jumping to conclusions to begin with? Would you have bothered to set the record straight if it was you who was accused?"

A sudden flashback of how he failed the Licensing Exam kept Todoroki from denying this. Though he wanted to. His hesitation only confirmed what Shine thought.

"Maybe try thinking about the position we're in before saying we can't be reasoned with, what I told you was calculated (intentionally or not) to show me who could be fair to me to begin with. I think I got my answer. I told you to up your game... if you got played, don't blame me."

"Your logic is truly your own," Todoroki said, "if you think that it's my fault you played me."

"I'm surprised you just owned up to that, though," Wally said, he was grinning like this amused him.

"Well," Shine looked Todoroki in the eye. "I couldn't have played you if you didn't start the game, kid."

He stared at her.

"I don't want to argue with you anymore, this is stupid." He said finally.

"Okay," Shine said. "But, anytime you want to argue again, I do enjoy a challenge. You have potential."

Todoroki shot her an almost hostile look, he thought she's mocking me.

"So that's you strategy?" Wally said to Shine once he'd gone inside.

"More or less," Shine said. "I'm just going to be myself."

"Sweet," Wally said. "I think I will too."

* * *

Aizawa called the DJs to his office later the same day to confront them about the report. Neither of them denied it.

"Expressing contempt for the law is not going to be tolerated at UA," Aizawa said. "In the future you will keep any such opinions to yourselves."

"What if we don't?" Shine asked.

Aizawa scowled. "You don't want to know."

"I do actually, I prefer to be threatened by specifics," Shine said.

Wally chuckled.

"Oh, you think this is funny?" Aizawa's eyes glowed red.

"No, sir," Wally went serious right away.

"How about this: You'll be asked to leave the school." Aizawa said.

Shine and Wally looked at each other.

"Is that all?" Shine asked.

"All?" Aizawa said, actually caught off guard. "What do you mean all? Isn't that enough? You'd be homeless."

"If that's the worst of it, that's not so bad," Shine said. "I've been homeless enough times to know what to do about it. Wally and I would be fine. If you're kicking us out, you can be sure we'll find a way to get out of it."

Aizawa wasn't sure what to say to that.

Wally wasn't arguing either, he just nodded.

"Do you understand that without our protection you'll be vulnerable to villains?" Aizawa said.

"If you want that on your conscience, then that's your problem, but if you seriously think we think you care about our safety if you're threatening to kick us out for expressing an opinion you don't like, then you've delusional," Shine said roundly. "In fact, I don't believe you mean to follow through on any of this. You're just upset that you can't control us with sheer power, aren't you? You must know how it only hurts your cause to lose track of us."

She leaned forward. He didn't flinch, just stared at her coolly.

"Let's be clear about this, Aizawa. We are not your students. We are guests. We are not prisoners, we are visitors. Foreigners, if you will. And, the next time you try to control us in this manner, we can go to war with the whole staff over it." She looked fierce. "Your behavior is inexcusable."

"My behavior?" Aizawa finally lost his composure. "You have the audacity to accuse me of bad behavior? Have you looked at what you've done since coming here?!"

"Other than not kowtowing to you and your stupid heroes, and daring to help out your students, I really don't think we've done anything remarkable," Shine snapped back. "But if you're getting antsy because it's just a little bit outside the law, than don't worry. The minute anyone comes here to investigate us, we'll be gone. No trace of us will be found. It'll be as though we were never here. Don't think World Walking doesn't come with its perks. Not being arrested is one of them."

She paused. "But the moment that happens, we are not under any obligation to do as you wish. This is not a threat, by the way, I have no reason to want to hurt you. But, you like to have control, so let's be real clear on this, any control you have is because we have an agreement, that agreement included our protection and assistance while adjusting to this world. It never included us not being able to freely express what we thought. If you can't handle that, I question the nature of this school... but something tells me, you don't actually have a problem with it. Why aren't we talking to Nezu right now? Why is no other teacher here?"

She smiled at him knowingly. "Could it be... that you secretly sort of understand our point?"

"You honestly think I would support your views?" Aizawa said.

"It's a compliment to you if I thought so," Shine said dryly. "But no, I just think if you were to say, that if someone came at one of your students, and you had no license, for whatever reason, that you would hesitate for one second to protect them, you'd be full of crap."

"Ooohh," Wally stifled a laugh.

"And that's all we're saying" Shine said. She banged the desk. "I'd put my life on the line for these kids, I proved that already, tell me, Aizawa, do you really have an issue with that? Or would you detest me if I did hesitate? Don't tell me you'd respect me more if I walked away from Momo when she was in trouble, or from Power Loader. Don't flip with me."

A long silence ensued.

"That will be all, Miss Likstar, West," Aizawa finally said coldly. "Don't let me hear any more of you frightening my students. I won't mention it to Nezu this one time. See that nothing like this happens again."

"I will make absolutely no promises," Shine did not know when to quit. "Remember, your students started this, chew them out. All I can assure you is that we are not trying to hurt them in any way, and if they can't handle us, I would venture to say, it's because UA has not prepared them for it. FWI, knowing how to stand up for your actions, that's part of  being hero... a real hero, anyway."

She turned and strode out of the room.

Wally nodded at Aizawa. "Hey, Mr. A, Shine's not wrong about that. We don't want to start trouble, really, but... hey, it's not like everyone is going to agree with you all the time. It's not going to bother us too much if you all don't see eye to eye with us, but your students... if they can't handle that, how will they handle the real world?"

"Don't tell me how to teach my students," Aizawa said.

"It was just a question, man," Wally shrugged. "Good night." he left.

Aizawa remained staring at the wall for a long time after that.
