Crimes! In the name of science!
You slowly woke up the next morning. You opened your eyes then closed them again, your eyelids heavy. You could hear people talking outside.
It took you a moment before you suddenly sit up, realizing that the sun was up, probably for a while now. You rushed to the shed's entrance and looked out to see Senku and the others, awake and alert.
"Oh what the hell?!"
"Oh, good morning (Y/n)!" Kohaku greeted.
"About time sleepyhead!" Senku smiled as you climbed down the ladder.
"What time is it?"
"Around 2pm." he flicked one of your bangs that was out of place. "That's a real bad case of the bed hair." he said, making Suika giggle.
Pouting slightly in embarrassment, you used your finger to quickly brush your hair.
"Why didn't you wake me up?!"
"For once you were sleeping in, I didn't wanna wake you up."
You just quietly mumbled incoherent words. You knew he didn't mean any harm by that, it was actually a really nice gestured, you really needed some extra time to rest.
It was then that you noticed the pile of translucent crap lying around. Looking at it closely, you recognize them as being made of glass.
"God dammit, you guys started glass-making without me!" you turned towards the others.
"It's not like you missed out on much..." he said.
"We wanted to call out for you," Suika said. "but Senku forbade us to do so."
You raised your eyebrows in surprise and looked over to him, who was busy putting more wood in the furnace so he wouldn't have to explain himself.
"Did something happened last night?" Kohaku asked both of you.
"Uh...."
You glanced at Senku again, this time he was looking at you, waiting for you to answer. Another nice gesture on his part, it was your decision whether you wanted them to know or not. You turned back to face her.
"Nah~." you shrugged before quickly and smoothly change the subject without any transition. "So where's Chrome?"
Senku sighed and stood up.
"He said he'd find us an artisan to work on the glass."
"Oh! There he is!" Suika pointed towards the bridge.
You both turned around and were baffled to see Chrome, dragging a tied-up old man behind him.
"(Y/n)! Hey!" he waved as he stood in front of you, the old man by his side. "You sure slept a long time!"
You and Senku just stared at the man who was half your size in silence.
"...Oh my god you fuckin kidnapped a dude!" you wheezed, a tear of laughter in the corner of your eye as you leaned on Senku's shoulder, who was just done. "Ah~! I can't!"
"Please old man Kaseki!" Chrome joined his hands together. "We need your artisanal skills!"
The sweet old man was not having it though.
"Binding people up with straw ropes for some hot bondage action is your way of asking for help?!" he said. "I'm not gonna give one bit of help to a pervert like you!"
'Okay maybe not that sweet.' you puffed a chuckle.
"I told you, that's not what's going on here!" Chrome exclaimed.
"Was it you old man who made that finely crafted shield?" Senku asked, gesturing to Kohaku's shield. "Without any iron tools or the least bit of dye?"
"Without dye?! That's amazing!" you looked closer at it, wondering how he made that red color.
"Yes." Kaseki said. "It was originally a gift to Kohaku's father, Kokuyou, when he won the last village games. I really put my all into it... Ah~ that takes me back."
Your smiled softened, you could tell he has a passion for it.
"We would need incredibly high crafting skills to be on par with the level of the Kingdom of Science." Senku said. "So I had been thinking about how we need a masterful artisan. But I never thought it'd be this old hobbling man here." he looked at him. "That incredible suspension bridge must have been your work as well then."
He nodded, but he still wasn't happy.
"Yes, that's right! And you went and ripped out a plank from it!"
"It was for the sake of science!" you said. "It's totally justified!"
He shook his head.
"I'll never help the likes of you! Never!"
You sighed.
"That's okay." you discretely hid one of the glass work behind your back. "I guess you'll just have to watch while we work on, thiiiii-." you dragged your last word as you revealed the object.
Kaseki loudly gasped and stared at it in disbelief.
"What is this clear masonry work?!"
"Wait there's more-" you gestured to the other glass works. "iiiiiiis!"
As the old wan stared at the glass, you turned towards Senku and Chrome and smiled widely as you mimed a fishing rod with the bait being sent then slowly pulled back. You didn't know why, but you could feel that if Gen was here, he'd be so proud of you. The two young men responded with an evil-looking grin. Suika was terrified.
"She's right." Senku said. "You don't have to help us." he took a big iron straw. "You can just sit back and watch as we show you something reeeeeeally exiting."
Old man Kaseki was both amazed by this new material and the many ways it could be shaped or formed and outraged by watching Chrome and Senku attempting to make glassware and failing miserably at it. It made you giggle, you could relate to that. You felt similarly whenever a classmate or a friend tried to play something and totally failed. You cringed at the memory of your little cousin playing Wonderwall for the fifth time at family reunion.
"What the hell are you doing?!" he stomped the ground as Chrome failed yet another time.
"Kukuku!" Senku smirked. "As a man who's dedicated and devoted to his craft, with glass-making being dangled like drool in front of your eyes. Can you truly sit quietly like this, old man Kaseki?"
You noticed he started to groan and shake intensely. You looked at him, getting concerned.
"Of course not!!!"
Suddenly the ropes snapped into pieces, and so did his clothes, revealing his muscular upper-body. You yelped and jumped back, at a total loss for words, your mouth and eyes wide open.
"Fine then! I can't resist anymore, you got me!"
Without saying anything, you handed him an iron straw, which he grabbed with such force.
"Let me do it." he said.
"Woaw!" Chrome exclaimed.
"Seriously?" Senku mumbled, just as shocked. "He's ripped!"
"Oh no." you whispered.
Watching old man Kaseki at work was mesmerizing. His movements were quick and swift, it looked so natural. He must've understood of it worked just by watching the boys do it. And that's how you knew he was amazing at what he does. And with such passion too, like a wild fire.
"Oh no~." you ran your hands through your hair.
"What's wrong?" Kohaku asked.
You slowly turned your head towards her.
"...that's kinda hot." you said before wheezing.
"(Y/n)." Senku said with a dead tone as Kohaku gagged in shock.
"I'm sorry~!" you covered you face with your hands, blushing. "I am but a woman!"
"That's crazy awesome!" Chrome exclaimed. "This is the first time old man Kaseki's ever seen glass right?!"
"That's the difference in the level of craft." Senku smiled.
"I've been working as an artisan for fifty years now." Kaseki said. "So I'm rather skilled."
His smile softened.
"This is someone that exists no matter the era." he quietly said, though you were standing right beside him. "Someone who exists quietly, dedicating their whole life to their work. A true man of skill."
You smiled too. He looked at you.
"You can relate to that right?"
You blinked twice, not expecting him to keep going with that stuff.
"You can too Senku!" you lightly tapped his arm.
He didn't respond and kept smiling at you.
"...what?"
"You didn't disagree."
Your heart skipped a beat as you softly gasped. You didn't even realize it.
"Huh." you simply said, looking back towards Kaseki.
It took you guys a good few days to finish the glassware plus the lab to put them in. At some point, as you were covering one of the outside wall with cement, you noticed Senku handing a rolled up paper to Kaseki, it looked pretty secretive.
"Woo~!" you raised your hands in the air. "Lab acquired baby!"
As the other cheered in front of the finished product, you looked over to Senku. He has the softest of smiles you've ever seen him do.
"What's wrong Senku?!" Chrome asked. "We finally got our lab! You could be happier!"
Right, it's only after you've known him for a while that you're able to tell how he's feeling with the slight changes of his expression, most of the time anyway.
"He is." you said. "He is happy."
"Indeed I am." he turned around. "Starting now, the sun rises on the dawn of chemistry. Things have finally become wonderful! Here, where we're filled with ten billion times more fun exciting attractions than Tsukasaland, is the Kingdom of Science!"
You smiled, the place did look pretty cool with all the things you guys got.
Senku walked passed you.
"Come on." he said. "We have another place to inaugurate."
You all looked at each-other in confusion. Kaseki followed him, seemed like he knew what he was talking about.
Senku led you to a space between the lab and the storehouse, where there was only on thing placed on the ground. A long wooden box while a few holes in specific places, and little iron bars attached to it and going along the length. As the others were still confused and started to ask question, you gasped.
"No way."
You walked towards it to have a closer look, Senku smirked.
"Oh my god!" you ran your hands through your hair, now standing in front of it. "Oh!!! My god!!!"
"This is your new ground. Where (Y/n)-sensei's music class will be held, and where you'll be able to play and compose, one instrument at a time." he said. "That is, only once you're ready."
"You know what that thing is (Y/n)?" Kohaku asked.
"It's an array mbira!" you picked it up and looked at Senku. "That shit costs more than a thousand box! Even my parents wouldn't buy it for me, you are a fuckin mad lad!"
"I don't see why, it was easy to make." he shrugged. "That's what you wanted to do right?"
"I was thinking more of a kalimba but oh my god~!" you hugged it.
"Just what the hell is a array mbimbam?!" Chrome explained.
"Array mbira." Senku corrected. "It's a musical instrument."
"You can play this then (Y/n)-chan?!" Suika asked.
"Huh?"
"Can you play it please~?"
"Uh..."
"Oh yes please!" Kohaku added. "I'd love to hear what music sounds like in your world."
You couldn't say no to them, but as you looked down, you started to wonder. What if you've gotten rusty? What if the sound doesn't come out the way you wanted? Their hopes are so up, what if you disappoint them?!
Senku placed a hand on your shoulder and leaned closer.
"Remember what I said, to pass on your musical knowledge, you'll have to expect to play for them."
You pursued your lips, not really motivated by that thought.
"Just play like you did back then."
As he leaned back, you wondered: how *did* you play back then? Every time you found a new instrument, your first instinct was to try and play it. And only when you were done did you realized that people have gathered around you. Which is exactly how you became the music-girl in high-school. You took a deep breath and sat down with the instrument placed on your lap. You pressed one of the iron bars to see how it sounded. It sounded perfect. You played a few scales before thinking about what to play, a certain piece came to mind.
'I haven't had the chance to play it. I wonder how it sounds.'
You began to play something, and that something made Senku have a flashback.
Back in highschool, when you and Senku were finally in the same class, he took this opportunity to run some tests and experiment on your musical abilities. Though, to you, they were more like games. One of them in particular.
Senku would give you a few notes (Taiju would even sometimes just pick them randomly) and you had to compose something using those notes as a base melody within a certain amount of time. One time, after some hard calculations, he gave you a few notes that he was certain were impossible for you to come up with something decent. And yet, what you gave was legit. You did struggle, that B flat really got you, you were hesitant and it was fairly simple. But Senku was still baffled.
And now he was hearing it again. But it was different, it was a complete piece. After all, you had 3,700 years to finish it.
Once you were done, you let out a sigh. You felt chills while you played, it was like going back home after a long day. It felt so warm, it felt so right.
"That was amazing (Y/n)!!!"
"Wah!" you flinched, surrounded by your friends.
You got reminded that they were here the whole time.
"It was so beautiful!" Suika exclaimed.
"I forgot to breath for a moment! That was wonderful!"
"That music thing is crazy insane!"
You giggled and scratched your head, blushing slightly in front of such praises.
Senku turned around and rubbed his arms, still feeling the goosebumps all over them. He smiled. His heart was beating faster too, but he acted like he didn't realize it.
He was just happy you were starting to get better.
