xlviii. Lights & life

Season two, chapter forty-eight

"Two sides of the
same coin"

WITH EVERY STEP she took she turned heads, her hurried stride along the vibrant city streets commanded attention, igniting a curiosity and wonder in the hearts of all who crossed her path. With every gust of wind, her long, curly hair that now had blonde highlights captivated unsuspecting admirers, causing their pulses to quicken with a mix of infatuation and yearning. Meanwhile, amidst the sun-kissed serenity of a morning park, she too embarked on her daily ritual of running, finding solace and harmony in the gentle caress of the awakening day.

"It set foot" Hana's voice stopped her steps halfway "An evil spirit's driving a kindergarten bus. Daseul Kindergarten. A yellow bus with clouds on it. Toward Jungjin intersection" Hana explained with her agitated breathing as she had been running for the last few minutes chasing the yellow bus

Thea sighed relaxing her body before forcing herself to turn around and return to where she came from. Thea is no stranger to the relentless battle between good and evil. Just as she begins to savor a rare moment of solitude, her tranquil respite is shattered once again.

"To Jungjin 2-gal! The kids are in danger!" Jangmul exclaimed aloud, letting Thea know that it was really important to stop that evil spirit

"It hurts to see kids cry. Let's get this done fast" Ms. Chu said on the other side of the earbud. Then only then Thea's blood froze in place, her eyes widened in surprise

"There are children on the bus!?" Thea asked pressing a button on the earbud so that her teammates could hear her. It was clear in her voice how surprised she was as to not knowing that innocent kids were inside that bus

"Yes and It's headed towards Jungjin Boulevard. We have to stop it!" Ms. Chu responded, making Thea curse underneath her breath while rushing her steps to the maximum

"I'll go" Hana said and the determination in her voice could be noticed by anyone

Thea, on the other hand, ran back and forth, dodging the people who stood in her way.

"Excuse me, passing through!" And almost as soon as people saw how rushed she was, they moved to the side to avoid being pushed by the brown-haired girl who had no plans to stop any time soon

"I can't stop the bus. The brakes don't work" Hana exclaimed underneath her breath, giving her best to stop the bus

"Jungjin Bridge 3 is under construction now. Make your way there" Mo-tak explained, following the bus where Hana and the kids were in

"Okay"

"We must protect the kids" Mo-tak said with determination and Thea almost imagined him with a serious face "Hana!" Mo-tak suddenly screamed in dismay

Thea stood on Jungjin's Bridge 3, bracing herself for the impending storm. Her heart skipped a beat as she spotted Mo-tak stepping out of a sleek black car, his face etched with determination. Their eyes locked, a silent understanding passing between them.

Thus both of them prepared to carry out their only objective; stop the bus from falling off the cliff that was literally behind them.

Thea sighed deeply, closing her eyes for a few moments, she channeled her inner strength, pressing her palms firmly against the formidable black car looming before her. With lightning reflexes, her white tennis shoes grip the ground as she summons every ounce of power to halt the relentless bus hurtling towards the abyss of the cliff.

The bus's tires screeched as it couldn't stop while the soles of Thea's sneakers literally smoked, her grunts of pain combined with Mo-tak's, and finally the bus suddenly stopped. Thea and Mo-tak coming within inches of falling off the cliff behind them.

Thea's heart pounded in her chest as she stood finally tall, her weary body aching but her spirit alight with an electrifying rush. With every labored breath, she savored the sweet taste of victory. Mo-tak's gentle pat on her shoulder sent a wave of validation through her, while Hana's determined thumbs up from inside the bus ignited a flicker of fiery determination within.

"Put her down!" Hana was heard saying inside the bus. Thea's eyes instantly resting on the scene happening inside the yellow bus

"I was having so much fun, but you ruined my plan" The evil spirit tightens its grip on an innocent child, wielding a shard of deadly glass against her fragile neck

Thea's gaze sharpened, fixated on the man getting off the bus, his arms tightly cradling an innocent little girl.

"Put the kid down" Mo-tak asked, extending one of his hands in the air

"You little..." Thea's soft murmurs guided her closer to the man caught in the clutches of inevitability, desperate to break free, yet refusing to surrender

"Don't move" The man ordered, noticing how the group of Counters took small steps towards him

Hana urged Ms. Chu and Jangmul (who had just arrived) not to do anything about it or the innocent girl would end up injured under the claws of the disgusting being.

"Don't. Keeping the girl safe comes first" Ms. Chu exclaimed with one hand in front of Jangmul but with her eyes glued to the evil spirit, attentive to his every movement

"Stay where you are!" The man shouted, laughing with amusement, while the haunting cries of a distraught little girl filled the air. With a sudden twist of fate, his arm jerks, diverting the course of the delicate glass towards the side in what seemed to be an involuntary movement

"What's going on?" Mo-tak stands puzzled, Thea frowning oblivious to what was happening in front of her. The man groaned in pain as each of his fingers bent backwards, breaking it in the process, until the piece of glass flew away as if a magnet was attracting it

All eyes turned to Mun, who was holding the piece of glass in his hand, crouching on the roof of the bus, making his typical entrance that was now common for the group.

Thea plastered a smile on her face in the enchanting presence of her boyfriend. As his long, curly locks sway gracefully with each stride, like a celestial halo, evoking an otherworldly allure. An ethereal aura surrounding him, inviting her into a realm of captivating emotions.

"Sorry I'm late. I kept you waiting" Mun exclaimed, standing on the roof of the bus, throwing the piece of glass away

"Mun!" Jangmul exclaimed in surprise

"Mun, you rascal" Mo-tak pointed it out with amusement

"Don't you hear what I said?" The man asked seriously before putting his hand around the girl's neck "Remember. You killed this girl" He began to laugh once more before throwing himself off the bridge behind him

"No!"

"Damn it!"

With desperation fueling their every step, the tension is palpable as they sprint towards the railing. Just when all hope seems lost, a moment of pure relief washes over Thea as a mysterious force lifts the man into the air, leaving him in agonizing pain. Witnessing this incredible feat, Thea watched gently as Mun freed the girl from the clutches of the enemy. Without a moment to spare, Thea cradles the little girl in her arms, using her psychokinesis to prevent her from plummeting to the ground.

"You're safe now. It's all over" Thea assured, her infectious smile captivated the attention of a wide-eyed little girl, who gazed up at her with wonder. Their connection sparked curiosity among the other children aboard the bus, eliciting mesmerized gasps from their innocent lips

"Not for you though" Mun pointed at the man who was still floating in the air and thus raised him even higher in the air

"Bye" Mo-tak said moving his hand from side to side "Well done" Mo-tak gave Mun a thumbs up before greeting the children inside the bus behind the group of Counters "Right. Should we cover the kids' eyes?"

"They should see him get punished a little" Hana exclaimed seriously

"Still, let's erase their memories later. So they don't have nightmares" Ms. Chu suggested with a frown, disapproving of Hana's response

"That's so sweet of you" Thea praised the eldest still holding the little girl in her arms

"It's okay now" Ms. Chu exclaimed with a comforting smile. Her warm smile ignited a sense of joy in the hearts of the little ones on the bus

Thea then forced herself to put the little girl on the ground when she saw the man fly at incredible speed until crashing into the hard pavement of the road.

"Mun" Jangmul said laughing as they approached the man's body on the ground "Did you eat some wild ginseng?"

And as the man abruptly rises from the ground, an unexpected jolt of fear runs through the group, leaving them on edge.

"Jeez you scared me" Mo-tak admitted when the man turned to look at them with hatred in his eyes, he then ran towards Mun, who in a quick movement slammed his fist into his chest sending him flying away from there "Wow, nice landing" Mo-tak praised with an amused smile on his features

"Are you ever going to show up on time?" Hana asked with a frown as Mun moved his shoulders backwards

"Mun, I though you were never coming" Jangmul admitted, looking at the boy in disbelief

"Maybe he thinks he's the main character here" Mo-tak pointed out with narrowed eyes

"No..."

"He's delusional" Hana interrupted him, pointing her index finger at him

"He can definitely be the main character" Thea exclaimed confidently, knowing damn well that her beloved boyfriend could be the protagonist anywhere he went. Thea knew one thing for certain - her beloved boyfriend was no exception. With enigmatic allure and a dash of intrigue, he possessed the captivating power to turn any situation into an extraordinary tale. As Thea confidently proclaimed her truth, a resounding laughter flowed between them

"What matters is that I'm here" Mun exclaimed, his eyes twinkled mischievously as a small smile formed on his lips, his gaze lingering on his captivating girlfriend walking gracefully by his side "And my super girlfriend was here to save the day." He boasted, wrapping one of his arms around her shoulders

With a single embrace, the air crackles with electric energy, as her heart races and his mesmerizing presence envelopes her.

"What are you saying? can't you cure him, Ms. Chu?" Thea asked amusingly, pointing at Mun with an incredulous smile

As the boy battles with his own turbulent thoughts, he succumbs to a moment of tenderness, planting a gentle kiss on Thea's forehead, a familiar gesture they have come to share becoming an irresistible and cherished mark of their enduring connection.

"I can't" Ms. Chu responded shaking her head, finding herself captivated by the unwavering connection between the two young souls. Despite the passing of time, their tender displays of affection remain unchanged, evoking a deep sense of nostalgia and warmth within her

"It's great to be all together like this" Mo-tak happily admitted, after all, they didn't always have time to spend together as a family

"I know, right?"

"What's he doing?" Mo-tak asked pointing at the man on the ground before spanking him on the butt "What a pathetic life" Mo-tak pointed out, pushing the man's legs onto the ground

"I'll summon it" Mun announced approaching the man and thus placed one of his hands on his chest, which shone white and thus the man's head began to move in rapid motion until succumbs to a restless nap

The group of Counters approached the man's unconscious body on the ground once Mun had completed his job. But as the group hovers over the unconscious body of their latest conquest, a burning question echoes in their minds: Will they ever find respite from this never-ending battle? When will they be given an appropriate rest to recover all those lost dreams, the times they had to leave their family reunions to take care of the evil spirits. They really needed a break, didn't they?

Question of the day: What is one food that you can literally eat all day long without getting tired of it? 🍔🍕

For me it would probably be rice and beans, it's a typical and common food in Mexican culture so I literally grew up eating it lol. Anyways, see y'all in the next chapter! 💕
