Chapter 3: Oh no...
The majority of the guests had already left since it was getting pretty late. Those who stayed were eating snacks as they talked about how they have been and what they were up too.
"How's hero work, Izuku?" Toru asked all of a sudden.
"It's been pretty hectic lately, but I manage." He shines a smile her way making her giggle.
"I've seen you on TV plenty of times and I heard you're now a post of the investigation team?" Kaminari asked in amazement while lifting his glass towards his friend. "I can barely keep up with my hero missions, I can't even begin to understand how tough it must be for you."
"Well I-" Suddenly everyone started clapping, seeing as you've finished a piece, the group joined in the applause.
"Thanks everyone, that's all for today!" You gave them a small wave before taking off the acoustic guitar strap from your shoulder.
"Why don't you join us?" Kyoka called out. "You're not working anymore right?" You looked over at Celest to which she only gave a small shrug.
"Sure!" You said happily and hopped off the small stage and jogged over to the small group. You took a vacant seat next to Kaminari and Fumikage. You felt kinda awkward at first since you really didn't know anyone else other than Kyoka.
"Oh! Right!" Kyoka took notice of your discomfort and started introducing you to everyone. You said your respective hello's and felt a bit better.
"By the way," Kyoka began as she hopped over to Midoriya, grabbing him by his shoulders for emphasis. "My friend Izuku here wants to ask you a bunch of questions about your quirk if you don't mind." You raised your eyebrows and you could tell how embarrassed he was since he couldn't muster up the courage to ask you himself. You let out a chuckle and nodded your head.
"Ask away." You casually leaned back in your chair. Izuku's expression just lit up like a Christmas tree and he took out a small note pad with a pen. You asked yourself if he always walked around with it.
He took a deep breath and boy were you not ready. "How long can you use it? What's the side effect of using it too long? What kind of emotions can you create? How many people can you affect? Does your quirk still work with original songs? Is your quirk stronger the louder you sing? What happens if someone can't hear you sing, does it still work somehow? Have you ever been caught using it as a benefit to the Cafe? How high can you go? Can you use it directly to certain people? Does it affect you? Do you have to sing the whole song for it to work or does it also work in parts?" He paused for a moment to take a breather but you held your hands up so he could give you some time to actually answer.
"Ok okay give me a second." You sweatdropped as you quickly processed everything he said.
"Oh, sorry about that, I tend to go overboard when it comes to new quirks, we can go one by one if you-"
"Depends on how loud I sing, but usually about 10 songs that are around 3 minutes. My throat gets sore and I could even lose my voice for a while. So far I know I can make people happy, excited, sleepy, sad, melancholic, calm. About 30 people, the more people the less strong it can affect. It's more powerful when the songs are original. The louder, the better. If I touch a person I can send vibrations but it isn't as effective. I haven't been caught yet and I don't plan to anytime soon. I'm not sure but I can break a crystal glass. Yes. And not unless I want it too. It works in parts but not as much as a full song." You took in a big breath once you finished and you could help but laugh seeing how shocked Izuku was since his pen dropped.
"Any more?" You asked with a smirk. Izuku opened his mouth but decided to write everything you just said before he forgets.
"He's a total nerd when it comes to Quirks." Added Ochaco with a small laugh.
"Oh, did you all study together?" You asked getting curious. You knew Kyoka was a hero but that didn't mean everyone she knew was one.
Everyone already knew not to mention that they were heroes because it was always for the best so they already had fake information ready.
"Yeah, they were in the general courses but I eventually met them even though I was in the hero course." You nodded in understanding. Since you didn't really look into hero information like the sports festival and such, you didn't really recognize anyone.
To you, they were just regular people, probably with basic quirks.
You noticed how some of the others started getting up and leaving and you realized it was getting pretty late. "Well, it was nice chatting with you all but I need to get going." You said getting up and straightening your outfit.
"I have to get going too, I've got a... reunion tomorrow." Izuku also stood up. "Sorry I can't stay longer Ochaco." He added sadly.
"It's no problem, I know how important your job is, we'll probably see each other soon anyway." Izuku understood what she meant and showed her a smile.
"Oh, where do you live L/n, maybe I can take you home?" He asked politely. You raised your eyebrows sort of surprised by his offer.
"You can just call me Y/n, and I live on 42nd Street."
"Sure thing Y/n, and I live nearby so that's perfect." You beamed seeing you didn't have to go on the bus today.
"Then let me get my stuff and we can head out." You jogged over to the back room and quickly gather your things. Once you were out you noticed Izuku had a slight blush across his face.
"Everything okay?" You asked.
"Y-Yeah! We should get going. Bye, everyone." Izuku waved to his friends and you did the same.
"I hope to see some of you more often around here." You smiled brightly towards them and then headed out.
"So what do you work as?" You asked trying to make conversation as you two walked over to Izukus car.
"Me? Oh, I um..." He scratched the back of his head trying to remember what his cover job is. "I'm an assistant at a hero company."
"That sounds cool. It must be great since you're so interested in quirks." You noticed he stopped in front of a really nice BMW. It was a classic model but you knew it was still pretty expensive nonetheless. "I see you get paid well." You chuckled seeing him get flustered.
"Yeah, I've just been saving up for a while." He unlocked the doors and you got into the copilot seat just as he got in as well.
"You got to ask me a bunch of questions so I hope you don't mind me asking some." You half-joked but on the inside, Izuku was starting to get a bit uneasy, it's been a while since he's actually had a long conversation with someone he just met. He would usually only talk to his school friends in hopes of not having to reveal his identity to many people.
"Yeah, no problem, ask away." He said calmly starting up the car engine, letting it roar to life.
"So how long have you been working at the company?" Izuku thought about it as he backed up the car out of the parking lot.
"About 4 or 5 years now." Well, that's how long he's been a Pro-Hero.
"Did you ever want to be a part of the Hero's course in UA?" Izuku was already driving down the highway and you could see the yellow street lamps pass by from time to time as you stared out the window enjoying the tranquil view.
"Yeah, when I was in grade school I dreamed of being in a hero course, but it just wasn't for me I guess." You tilted your head at his answer.
"By the way, what's your quirk?" Izuku's hand gripped the steering just a tad tighter but you didn't notice.
"Strength, I can just get a bit stronger, that's all, it's nothing too flashy really like yours. Haven't you ever really thought about being a Hero?" He asked trying to steer away from you asking too many personal questions about him.
"Oh, well, not really. I've actually always dreamed about being a famous singer but," You let out a short sigh. "It just wasn't for me I guess." You let out a chuckle at the end using the same words he did. This surprisingly started to intrigue Izuku.
"Why not? You have an amazing voice." He said confidently, any kind of embarrassment put aside.
"I may have a great voice but if I go into the music business, people will think I got famous just by using my quirk and not my own talent even if I proved it somehow, it would be too difficult to handle." You shrugged when you felt his eyes on you for a moment.
"That's why you're only singing at that cafe?"
"Yup." You popped the 'p' at the end to try and lighten the mood a little. "But that doesn't mean that I don't like working there. I love it actually. The people that work there are like my family and the regular customers that come by are so kind. Celest is actually an old friend and she offered me that job when I started living alone."
"When did you start living alone?"
"18."
"18???" Izuku was pretty shocked since, when he was 18, he had the benefit of spending the last of his school days living at Heights Alliance.
"Yeah, it's a long story, maybe I'll tell you another time." You said not really wanting to get into a deep conversation. Izuku kept his eyes on the road but he couldn't help but think about how you said 'for another time'.
"Yeah, no problem." He answered casually. The rest of the ride toward your apartment was silent but it wasn't awkward.
You thanked Izuku and you were about to get out of the car when you got an idea.
"Do you...want to have some coffee at my place? As payment for the ride?" Izuku was caught off guard and looked at the time: 9:37 pm. You noticed his glance at the clock. "Or is it too late?"
"What? No-no! I mean, a cup of coffee wouldn't hurt before I head home." You smiled at him and opened the car door.
"Then let's go." You lead your new friend up the stairs to your apartment. "Sorry if it's a little... unorganized." You commented before unlocking the door. Izuku shrugged in response and let you open the door.
Both of you ambled in and you casually took off your shoes just as he did. "Make yourself at home." You went straight to the kitchen to start boiling water.
"You have a really nice place," Izuku commented looking around.
Small but cozy.
"Thanks, I haven't had any visits here in a while." You got some instant coffee and placed it on the center table in the living room.
You were happy to see Izuku was comfortable and you two started up another pleasant conversation. You brought the hot water and poured him some in his cup and you did the same for yourself.
The night went on and Izuku was pleasantly surprised to see how much fun he was actually having with you. You seemed so bright and cheerful and it was refreshing to have such good company, he didn't even notice the time passing by, he was really enjoying being there with you.
"Wow, look at the time. It's getting pretty late you commented when you saw that it was already 11:43 pm.
"Oh, right, I should get going." Izuku responded somewhat sadly as he stood up.
"I'll see you out." You said as you started getting up. Izuku nodded and gathered his things and headed for the door.
"Thanks for everything Y/n." He thanked with a small bow. You let out a chuckled and waved at him dismissively.
"I should be the one thanking you for the ride home. Take care Izuku, maybe we can hang out again sometime." Izuku couldn't help but show a child-like smile and nod, feeling a slight blush appear on his cheeks.
"Yeah, see you around." He waved goodbye and left the apartment with his heart pounding inside his chest.
He knew what was going on, he was no stranger to how he was feeling. It was bubbling up slowly inside and he couldn't stop it as he remembered the little details like the way you laughed, the way you would tuck your hair behind your ear every once in a while, how you were so considerate and attentive to anything he needed like extra sugar or a preference in background music. That's when he remembered what Kyoka told him before leaving the Café.
"Looks like someone's got a crush."
Izuku got in his car and just kinda sat there as he covered his face with his hands in embarrassment.
Oh no...
