Chapter 27: Getting Interesting

You finished cooking for those who weren't performing and left the tent, saying goodbye to the rest of the cooks. As you left the tent, Beast called you. You looked around the dark area before finally spotting the woman. It was dark, and there were only a few lights to guide everyone, but you spotted Beast standing under one of the lights.

   " Y/n! Come here! "

You looked toward the woman and ran toward her. She walked into the big blue tent, and you followed her. You noticed that practice was over, and no one was in the ring.  But everyone was in the back of the tent, hidden behind the flaps, getting ready for their performance. Beast stopped before a pile of supplies and pointed toward them with her finger, turning to look at you.

" All of this needs to be moved. Since you're not performing, you can move the supplies where they're needed. The show is going to start in an hour, so try and move everything by then. They need to go to specific places. You'll find notes on them, and those will tell you where they need to go."

You looked at the pile of boxes and supplies, and you started to doubt the strength in your arms. Some boxes seemed too big to lift; you would need to push them or have someone lift them for you.

" Will it just be me? "

" Yes, everyone else is practicing or getting ready. But if you can't do it, then inform me, and I'll get someone else to do it. But remember you joined us, so now you have to pull your weight. And since you're not performing, you'll have to pull your weight more than usual. "

" Right. Thanks for the tip, Beast. "

Beast nodded and walked away with her arms crossed. Beast didn't want to be hard on you, but she didn't want to give you the opportunity to get kicked out of the circus. She didn't know you yet, but she had already started to like you after how you talked with Dagger and Joker this morning. You joked like you were already part of the family.

As Beast walked away, you turned towards the supplies and sighed. You walked towards the first box and took the small piece of paper off, reading where it needed to go.

' It needs to go to the kitchen. '

You folded the paper and set it on a random stool to the side. You picked up the box and instantly sat the crate down, feeling how heavy it was. Your hands pressed against the crate's surface, and you took a deep breath before moving to grab it again.

   ' Let's try again. '

You lifted the heavy box and started to quickly walk out of the tent and toward the kitchen, where you originally were. After dropping the box off, you went back and continued to take the smaller boxes first. While you delivered the boxes all over the camp, you were being watched. In the shadows, Joker watched as you lifted the heavy and light crates, taking them where they needed to be.

" I didn't think she could lift that first box of potatoes. The lass had trouble for a second, but she tried again. " Dagger said, watching you carry a crate toward the showers.

" She's working earnestly too. She's trying to get everything done quickly, before the show, like I told her. " Beast commented.

Joker smiled, seeing you drop the crate and then walk back to the large blue tent to get another one.

" She'll pull er' weight alright. " He said, leaning on his cane.

You walked back into the blue tent and took the paper off the next box. But this box puzzled you.

' It says I need to deliver this to the first string tents. I can't go over there, though. . .'

You decided to take the box there and set it on the sidelines before looking for someone to help you with it. You placed the paper on top of the box in your pocket before lifting the box. The box wasn't heavy; it was very light. You walked toward the small baby blue tents, but upon reaching the line that separated the tents from the others, you spotted a few snakes on the ground.

" Now, how do I get this over there? "

You looked around the area but didn't see anyone that could help you, so you planned on setting the box down before walking back to find Beast or Joker. However, before setting the box down, you felt a tap on your shoulder and turned around to see Snake behind you. He had his shirt off and wore his performance clothes, with two snakes on his shoulders.

" Um, hi. I was told to deliver this box, in there, but I can't go in, due to the snakes. "

You brought out the paper from the box's top and handed it to Snake. He opened the paper and read through the words before nodding. He pocketed the paper before wrapping his arms around the box, taking it from you. Snake stepped over the string and walked passed the tents to deliver the box.

" Thank you! " You shouted.

You walked back to the blue tent and looked at the last box. This box was as tall as your waist, and you knew it would be heavy. You attempted to lift the box, but you found you were right. It was a big box. The box fell back against the ground, and you stepped away from it, looking at how you needed to move it. You wanted to try and push the box, but you didn't want to tear the tent's floor.

" That box is too heavy for you. "

You turned and faced a man standing behind you. You recognized the man instantaneously. Though his clothes differed from what you were told, this man was a reaper. His dark brown hair was slicked back, and his glasses sat gently on his nose. He wore a white suit, but the jacket was yellow and glittery. But the object that revealed who he remained in his hand. In his hand was an extendable pruner.

" I know you. Black and Smile, told me about you, and what happened to Grell, that night in London. "

" William T. Spears is my name, and I have a schedule to keep. "

   " Right. You're a reaper. "

" I am, and the pruner at my side is my death scythe. "

   " So, it's like Grell's chainsaw? "

" I wouldn't compare my scythe to his, but yes. A death scythe is used to capture souls, by whatever means. "

   " Ah, I see. I'm Y/n. "

" Yes, I met you unconsciously, in London, when retrieving Grell, and taking his scythe. "

" Nice to meet you? Umm, could you help me with this box? I don't want to push it and tear the floor, but I can't lift it alone. "

   " Certainly. "

William walked to the other side of the box and grabbed the bottom while you held the bottom on the other side. Then, together you lifted the box and started carrying it into the center of the ring.

" So, what is a reaper doing here? "

   " That is confidential. "

" But it doesn't have to be. My companions and I are here on a mission, and though I can't really help than all that much, I would still like to. So, please tell me. "

William was silent, and you figured you wouldn't get told what was happening and why a reaper was at the circus. Once you set the box in the center of the ring, you tapped the top. Before you could walk away, William started speaking after pushing his glasses up with his death scythe.

" In the next few days, we plan to review a large number of souls in this area. This is a very special case, so I'd appreciate it if your companions didn't interfere. "

" I don't control them. They'll do what they do. I'm more or less here, because if I was left on my own, I wouldn't be having as much fun as I am now. "

   " You're having fun? "

" Yeah, though I know this is a case for Ciel, and I won't see him often, I can at least abide my time by helping people. And helping Ciel in any way I can. "

" Smile informed me not to use real names or professions here. So from now on, call me Suit. "

" Got it. Thank you Suit for helping me. "

Suit nodded and started to walk away from you, with his pruner swinging beside him, in his hand. Before exiting the tent, he turned toward you with a serious look still on his face.

" Make sure it's not your soul I reap in the coming days. You're not due for a while, and I would hate for more overtime. "

He left the tent, and you slumped your shoulders.

' He didn't have to tell me that. '

You walked out of the tent and started looking around for Beast to tell her you finished your job, but you found Joker instead.

" Just in the nick of time! We're about to learn room assignments. Everyone is over here. "

Joker guided you toward a small group that consisted of Ciel, Dagger, Sebastian, and William. You stood beside Ciel and waited to hear about room assignments. You noticed that Ciel and Sebastian wore different clothes when they entered the circus.

Sebastian wore a suit, but he wore a skull tie, and a tophat, with a purple mark over his right eye. Ciel's clothes were fitting for him. His eye patch went back to being black, covering his right eye as his usual one would. A pirate hat was on his head, with a big blue feather sticking out of the side. He wore a blue and white verticle striped shirt with puffy sleeves that cinched at the wrists. A black vest rested over the top, but it didn't stretch down to Ciel's waist. He wore blue and white leggings but different patterns on both legs. One design was white and blue diamonds, while the other was blue and white lines. Then on his feet were white boots that went past his ankles. Around his hips were puffy blue shorts, with small ruffles coming out of the left side of the hem. Finally, under his left eye were three blue diamonds.

Ciel reached over and held your hand in his. He had been worried if you had gotten into any trouble through the day or, like him, grew tired of the work and stress the circus put on him. Holding your hand gave him some comfort, knowing that you were okay. Ciel sat on top of a large crate, and you sat beside him. He squeezed your hand as he leaned against your shoulder, exhausted.

" And now, the moment you've all been waiting for! It's ten tent assignments! "

   " Right. . ." Ciel muttered with a huff.

" Well, don't 'ee look down in the mouth! Smile, smile! " Joker said, leaning toward Ciel and pointing at his smiling lips.

   " R-Right! "

Another person came to join Joker's side as Joker leaned away from Ciel. The boy was about Ciel's height, with auburn, almost brown, hair that covered one of his eyes. He wore comfortable clothes, sporting a white cotton shirt, brown slacks, and brown boots.

" The results of our impartial lottery: Smile, 'ee be in Tent Eight. And here's thy roommate! " Joker said, gesturing toward the boy with auburn hair.

" Black, 'ee be in Tent Nine. "

" Black isn't rooming with me? " Ciel asked, wide-eyed.

" No, why? " Joker asked.

" Smile, you're fairly tied to Black's apron strings! Time to be independent! " Dagger said, wrapping his arm around Ciel's shoulders.

   " Th-That's not what I. . .I's really rather Black, or Y/n--"

   " And Black's roommate is. . .Suit! "

After the announcement, you could practically feel the electricity in the air between the two. Shadows covered their eyes as they glared at each other with dilated pupils. Joker didn't seem to catch the tension and laughed.

" Look, they're delighted! Y/n, we do have a problem with putting 'ee in a tent. "

   " Huh? "

" It seems we have no more room in any of the tents for 'ee. All the beds are taken up. And I don't want 'ee to sleep on the ground or have anyone give up their bed for the dirt. So, ye'll be happy to hear, Beast offered to share her room with 'ee. You'll be sleeping with the first string. "

Ciel's ears perked at this, realizing this would give him the advantage. Of course, he couldn't move around freely without Sebastian, but you had access to the soft blue tents, giving them a chance to investigate.

" Right, let's be off, Dagger. We'll leave the young lads to it! " Joker said, walking away with the sheet of names.

" Good night! " Dagger called.

   " Let's go, Y/n! " Beast yelled.

   " Good night guys. "

You ran toward Beast and followed her to her tent. Upon reaching the string, separating the tents, you spotted the snakes slithering around.

" Don't worry, you're with me. They'll get used to your scent, and you'll be able to walk through. "

You nodded and stepped over the line, following Beast. Beast walked to her tent and opened the flap for you. Her tent consisted of red and black colors, and in the corner was a wire mannequin with a fresh set of clothes for her to change into later. Beast's bed was big and could hold two people.

" If you don't mind me asking, was there a reason you volunteered to keep me in your tent? " You asked, turning toward her.

Beast swung a black cloak over her shoulders and buttoned the first button, letting the rest cover her.

" I didn't want you to sleep on the ground. You wouldn't work well with a sore back. And I didn't want you to sleep with certain people because some people here are vile. Now, I'll be heading out. Whatever you do, don't leave this tent, or I'll make you regret it. "

Beast left the tent, closing the flap behind her. You didn't dare step out of the tent; instead, you walked to the bed and laid down. The bed was soft, and you instantly felt your body relax in the sheets.

' I wish I brought something to sleep in, but I'm thankful for a bed. '

As you lay on the bed, you heard footsteps outside the tent. It was multiple, so you knew it wasn't only Beast awake while everyone else was asleep. You listened to the footsteps fade away, and you didn't hear a single sound after that.

' So, all the first string people go somewhere together during the night. Where are they exactly going? '
