Chapter 20: Returning to Them
The carriage ride was peaceful, and in the distance was the Phantomhive Manor. You smiled seeing the manor in the distance, and you spotted Ciel and Sebastian waiting for you at the top of the steps. Like last time, Finny played with Pluto outside while Mey-Rin and Bard were inside. Finny was holding onto Pluto's leash tightly but was flung around easily. You laughed when Pluto flung him into the side of the manor, and Finny was still smiling at the demon hound. When the carriage stopped, Sebastian approached and opened the door, holding his hand out for you.
" Thank you, Sebastian. "
" Welcome back, my lady. "
You placed your hand in Sebastian's, and he helped you out of the carriage. He took your bag and shut the carriage door. The driver whipped the horses, and the carriage was soon in the distance, heading back toward your estate. You walked up the stairs of the manor and smiled toward Ciel. Ciel had a slight smile on his face, and he approached you.
" Welcome back, Y/n. "
" It's good to be back Ciel. I missed the ruckus you have here. It was too quiet at home. "
" You missed quite a lot. The Winter Festival is over, and there was a small rescue mission to save Lizzy. "
" What happened to Lizzy? "
" I can tell you on the carriage ride. I must go into town, by orders of the Queen. Bodies have been found, and I've been asked to investigate alongside the Yard. We will stay at the townhouse we slept in during the Jack the Ripper case. "
" Alright. "
Sebastian placed your bag inside the carriage and opened the door, gesturing for you to step inside. You entered first, with Ciel behind you. Instead of Ciel sitting in front of you, he sat beside you in the carriage while Sebastian sat outside. The carriage lurched forward and headed away from the manor. Ciel placed his cane on his lap, with the head touching your lap.
" So, tell me about Lizzy. " You said, looking beside you at Ciel.
" Well, she had come upon a ring, much like my family ring, but the blue diamond was cursed. Anyone who holds the ring has been cursed. Elizabeth found herself, in a position with someone much like a dollmaker. He tried turning her into a doll, but after we defeated him, we saved Lizzy. Grell and Pluto were very useful, during that time. "
" How was Grell? "
" He should be overjoyed. I promised him a day with Sebastian where he can do whatever he pleases. "
" Poor Sebastian. He's not going to enjoy that day. "
" No, he won't. " Ciel said, looking towards where Sebastian would be sitting outside the carriage.
Ciel had an evil look in his eye, and you chuckled, nudging his shoulder. You knew Ciel always tried to get under Sebastian's skin and vice versa. Finally, Ciel looked back toward you, with the evil look turning soft.
" And how was your adventure? "
" It was. . .eventful. "
You started to explain your story to Ciel. You started your story by explaining what happened when appearing at your manor and meeting Undertaker. Once you mentioned the Harvey's house, Ciel's face turned sour. He listened to every word you said, but his expression didn't change from the sourness. Once you had finished your story, Ciel's sour face softened. He took your hand in his and held your hand on his lap. He rubbed his thumb over your hand in a comforting way.
" I'm truly sorry for everything. You shouldn't have experienced that, especially as a young child. "
" Thank you, though you shouldn't apologize. It's in the past, so I shouldn't ponder on it. I'm just glad that it's over and I figured out what happened. "
Ciel nodded and kept your hand in his as the carriage stopped in town. Ciel stepped out of the carriage, helping you down, and never letting go of your hand. There was a crowd gathered near a shop. The Yard stood in front of the shop to keep bystanders from touching the bodies. The bodies were hung upside down, by their feet, from the top of the shop. Their clothes were stripped from their bodies, except for their briefs. Rope was tied around their arms, each with a note hanging from the rope.
" This fellow is the child of craziness and laziness. England is the blasphemous country that has taken all, and forced on us, in arrogant ways, its rotten culture. Retribution should befall the fools of the country that the hellcat rules. "
After hearing, Inspector Arthur read one of the letters hanging on the men, Ciel stepped forward. Ciel had spotted Abberline, holding the papers. Abberline didn't seem to mind Ciel's presence, and Ciel looked over the documents in his hands.
" So all the victims had just come home from India, then? No one seems to have died yet. He does have a way with words. I agree that our country would be rather improved if all these nouveaux riches fresh back from India disappeared. Still this mark. . ."
There was a drawing on the piece of paper at the end of the message. It looked like a tongue sticking out of someone's mouth. It was a straight line with a 'u' underneath it, touching the line, making it look like someone's mouth.
" He's mocking the Queen and all Englishmen! He must be Indian! " Inspector Arthur said, with his furry brows getting knitted together.
" Ah, so that's why I was called in? Most of the Indians who've come here illegally hole up in the criminal neighborhoods of the East End. The Yard still hasn't learned their exact number or their route, has it? I can't allow Her Majesty to continue suffering such indignity. Let's go, Sebastian, Y/n. "
" Yes, my lord. "
Ciel started walking away, and you followed him, with Sebastian standing beside you. Abberline looked toward your figure after hearing Ciel call your name.
' So, that's the woman, he was concerned over at the Winter Festival. '
Abberline watched your figures get smaller and smaller until you turned around the corner. He focused on his papers, trying to solve the mystery of who was responsible for the hanging men. You followed Ciel through the streets and turned the corner heading down an area where most of the crime happened in town.
" Uh, Ciel. Why did we turn down this way? "
" I believe the Indians use this area as their base. "
" Really? "
" Yes--"
" Ah! That hurt! "ve cracked a rib! "
You stopped walking, and so did Sebastian. Ciel had bumped into someone and started screaming. You thought the man was overly dramatic since it was just a light tap, but since this was not the best area in town, and Ciel was wearing his usual, high-status clothes, it wouldn't be a good outcome. The man had caramel skin and scruff on his face. A hood covered his head, while the rest of his body was covered in rags that would protect him from the approaching snowstorm. Other people were gathering around that seemed to have believed him instantly.
" I might die!
" Hey, what's wrong!? "
" That's awful! He needs to compensate you for that! "
" Leave us everything you have. " The man said, glaring at Ciel with a smile.
The men around you looked just like the man being dramatic about the bump, and they all glared at your group.
" We've been caught by very cliched thugs. What shall we do, young master? "
" Hurry up and get rid of them. "
" Certainly. "
The man from earlier grabbed Ciel's coat and pulled him closer, getting in his face. Then, the glaring smile was gone, and now, he was frowning at Ciel with a harsher glare.
" Everybody in this place hates you Britishers! "
He pulled out a long knife, but Sebastian stepped forward and pushed the man back with two fingers. The man flew back and hit the ground, with the knife falling out of his hands.
" Are you hurt? " Sebastian asked Ciel.
" No. "
" You bastard! You drag us here and then you toss us away like rubbish! You people trampled your filth all over our homeland! Now you find out how humiliating it is being looted! "
" Wait! "
Out of a small alley, a man stepped out that looked different than the rest. He wore regal clothing, and behind him was a man following him, much like Sebastian following Ciel. The man had long purple hair tied up in a high ponytail. He wore blue and red clothing with a cream-colored pullover around his shoulders. The man following him had short white hair with a green and white-colored scheme. The purple-haired man had a paper in his hands of a poorly drawn woman on it, and he held it up.
" I'm looking for someone. Have you seen an Indian who looks like this? "
" Who the hell are you!? Stay out of this! "
" Are you dueling? He has a khansama with him. Are you an English nobleman? " He asked, looking at Ciel.
" What if I am? "
" Then I will side with my countrymen. Agni! "
" Yes? " The man with white hair questioned.
" Defeat them. "
The man nodded and stepped forward. You watched as he raised his right hand toward his chest. His right hand was wrapped tightly down his arm, and as he got closer, he started to take the wrapping off.
" I shall brandish the right hand of the heavens bestowed on me for my master. "
The man's eyes narrowed, and he jumped at your group. Sebastian pulled Ciel back, seeing that Agni was targeting them, not you. You stepped back and watched as Sebastian defended himself and Ciel from Agni. You looked toward the man who had called for Agni and made your way toward him, avoiding the men who had threatened you earlier. You shook his arm, and he looked down at you, with his glare softening.
" Yes? Who are you? "
" I'm Y/n. Who are you? "
" I am Prince Soma! " He said with a smile.
A gold aura floated around the man, who seemed to take pride in his title. You noticed he wasn't any taller than Ciel or you. You assumed he was seventeen, just like you and the earl. You pointed towards Ciel and Sebastian, still holding the prince's arm.
" Prince Soma, we were just walking down the street, when your people threatened us. We had done nothing wrong, and they were threatening us, to give them everything we had. Please stop Agni, from attacking my companions. "
" What? Did you fellows attack, shorty here for no reason? "
" But you guys look the same heigh--"
" That's no good. My countrymen are in the wrong this time. Agni! Side with the Englishmen! "
In seconds, the men around you fell to the ground and didn't attempt to stand up. Agni stood between Ciel, Sebastian, and Prince Soma with you beside him.
" I've finished, Prince Soma. "
" Good. Well, then. I'm looking for someone so I'll be on my way. Ta-ta. "
The man turned and started walking away from you and your companions. He complained about the streets of England being a maze. Now, left alone, on the streets, beside the people beaten down, you looked toward Ciel. His hat had been taken off when Sebastian grabbed him, and now the top hat was held in Ciel's hands. Ciel placed his hat on top of his head and rested the bottom of his cane on the ground.
" Let's go to the townhouse, to rest. It's getting late. "
You nodded and walked with Ciel to the carriage. Sebastian drove the horses toward the townhouse, and as the carriage bumped along the road, snow started to fall and cover the ground. Snow covered the roof and the bushes when you made it to the townhouse. You walked inside, with the snow crunching beneath your feet. Once you entered, Ciel muttered the next part of the plan.
" That was a waste of energy. One of those Indians might be the criminal. Let's wait for Sir Arthur to contact us. "
" Agreed. I say we just get warm, it's freezing. " You said, rubbing your arms.
" Young master! "
" Welcome home, yes! "
Mey-Rin, Bard, Tanaka, and Finny appeared out of the rooms near the entrance. You had left them at the estate to prepare themselves to be brought to the townhouse. Tanaka drove the carriage, and upon reaching the townhouse, they entered and started working.
" I'll never get any peace if I'm called to London for every silly little thing. "
Sebastian slipped off Ciel's jacket and then moved to take yours from your hands. You handed him your coat as the front door opened, revealing Lau.
" My lord, you're really here! "
" You're just dropping in unannounced!? How often have I told you to at least send a note before you visit!? "
Lau entered the townhouse, leaving the door open and letting the cold air inside. His smile never faded from its mischievous upturn.
" Ah, I vaguely remember that. "
" As we have a guest, why don't I serve tea? " Sebastian suggested.
" Might as well. " Ciel said, placing his hand on his forehead and closing his eyes.
Lau seemed pleased by this and nodded toward the butler. You noticed movement toward the door and saw Prince Soma and Agni by the door. You waved toward them, and Agni waved back with a small smile. Prince Soma smiled broadly as he waved toward you but focused back on Ciel.
" I'd rather have chai than English tea. " Prince Soma said.
" Might as well. "
After realizing he had heard a different voice, Ciel looked up at the door, at the prince. You guessed Lau brought them after meeting them.
" W-Wha. . ."
" Oh, I met them on a street corner. They said they wanted to see you. "
" What are you doing here!? "
" Why, we're acquaintances now. Have you forgotten already? "
Agni shut the door as Prince Soma entered the townhouse. They stepped forward, walking closer to you and Ciel. All while, Ciel was in shock about their appearance.
" Acquaintances? "
" And I saved you, too. " Prince Soma said, walking past Ciel.
" Saved? Excuse me!? "
" Yes, with help from your beautiful friend here. " He said, pointing to you as he passed by.
Prince Soma walked toward the stairs, not seeming to care about anything in the world. He treated the home as his own and walked freely through it.
" In India, it's the common practice to invite your savior home and entertain him. Is it the British way to kick one's savior out into the cold? "
Prince Soma disappeared up the stairs, and Ciel followed him, with Sebastian trailing his young master. You stayed downstairs with everyone else as the yelling upstairs started. Mey-Rin, Finny, and Bard walked upstairs to see the commotion while you stood with Lau.
" So, you've figured out your past, have you? " Lau asked, looking straight toward you.
" Yes. I have. I had help from Undertaker, but I figured it out. Home come you didn't tell me before? "
" Hmm, it simply wasn't my place to tell. It's more of your father's business if he wanted to tell you or not. I was simply a helper. "
" Thanks. " You said, narrowing your eyes at him.
" But now you know. How are you fairing with the information? "
" I am. . .okay. . .Undertaker warned me to not think about it too much and to not focus on the past. Which he is right. The Harvey's are long gone, so I'm. . .just going to keep moving forward with my life. "
Lau nodded and stepped toward the stairs. He placed his hand on your head, ruffling your hair, as he passed you by.
" What a wonderful thing to do. "
Lau walked upstairs to join everyone else, but you walked upstairs and went toward your room. You already knew who Prince Soma and Agni were, so you had no problem going to bed. Upon reaching your room, you changed into nightwear and slipped under the bed sheets. You were going to rest and listen to the crackle of the fireplace as it lulled you to sleep, but there was a knock on your door.
" Come in. " You called.
The door opened, revealing Sebastian. The butler stepped into the room, with the door shutting behind him. He walked toward your bed and set the candle he had on your bedpost. He sat on your bed, turning his head toward you with a slight smile.
" I wanted to check on you before you retired for the night. You had a long adventure, and before you could properly rest, you were brought on another journey. "
" I'm doing well, I guess. It's nice to be back with everyone. "
" I am glad you returned as well. "
You could tell Sebastian had something to ask you, and you called for him to ask you, and he turned his head away, looking toward the fire.
" My lady, did you happen to see Angela, or hear anyone talking about snuffing out the unclean? "
You grew curious over Sebastian's question. Flashbacks appeared in your find of Angela and Houndsworth. You remembered how Angela called you clean but broken.
" No. I haven't seen Angela since we left Houndsworth and I didn't come across anyone but Undertaker during my research. No one has spoken to me being clean or unclean. "
Sebastian nodded and stood up from your bed, bowing to you.
" Thank you, my lady. "
" Why do you ask? "
Sebastian stood up straight, with his red eyes looking down on you. He remembered how the Doll Maker had mentioned you. How you were clean but broken, and his master was looking for you. Then the little figure that jumped out of the doll and escaped spouted the same nonsense of snuffing out the unclean, ending their rescue mission for Miss Elizabeth.
" I remembered what you asked me at Houndsworth. About someone speaking to you in a weird way. It hasn't left my mind since. "
He wasn't lying, but he wasn't telling the whole truth either. He was sworn to tell the truth by his young master, but he technically did. He just didn't tell you about what happened after the Winter Festival.
" Have a good night, my lady. "
Sebastian leaned down toward your sitting form and gently kissed your head before grabbing his candle and leaving your room. You were blushing madly and felt your body overheating from the fire and the kiss. Sebastian, however, was smiling mischievously as he walked down the hallway.
