Chapter 10 Not So Bad After All
Was this your reality now? Ha, how many times have you thought that? Time seemed so slow now. Every minute that passed felt like an hour and if days have gone by you're not certain how many or how quickly. The anti void was so wire and barren even with all the blue string hanging about and those dolls. Still being out of it was better than dangling like a puppet from the ceiling.
You wondered, would error actually kill you and take hour soul? He said it himself he had no use for it, and you weren't sure exactly how "souls" to monsters worked other than the every living being has one. So you wondered why he was taking you with him. It's not as if you'd follow ink, especially after that weird dream you had.
No it wasn't a dream it was reality for a short while and then it became a nightmare. You're not sure what the water has been representing in your dreams but you don't think it's good to have it reoccurring in nightmares. You've been walking steadily behind error for some time now, and as your mind wandered you were also captivated with this world.
It was like being in an endless night sky. You swore at this point you were in space and how you were able to breath was beyond you. To think merely a few weeks ago monsters had been free of the underground, monsters you didn't even know existed, and now? To see an entire multiverse is opportunities? It was certainly a marvel in itself.
But you're not an adventuring type. Much like yours Papyrus you prefer the comfort of home. The comfort of lazing about. It's not lazing really, not when you're sad, but how can you tell your friends or family that you're sad? That would kill them if they truly care for you. So you're content with the lazy label until it was just you and chara. Then you stepped up became the big sister you had to be all for your sibling.
Chara was always the more adventurous one anyway, saving monsters traveling through au's helping anyone and anything seemed up their alley no matter the circumstances. But you? You're not cut out for this. Cut out to be here. You're only here to save your friends and family to save your sibling.
You still hate to think what error would have done if you hadn't done anything. No one to save the day from the scary villain. Though you don't think he's as scary as he pretends to be. Your eyes gravitated away from the brilliant lights and amazing structures to gaze at the skeleton ahead of you keeping his pace like he wanted a particular place that was out of reach with a simple access point.
Needless to say though his actions aren't right either. What would Chara do? How would they talk to error? Get him to understand that life even if most of it can be garbage, isn't worth destroying? Is it even worth reasoning with him? He seemed so full of himself, conceded and arrogant, vengeful and so angry, and then sometimes calm and quite.
What would Chara do?
"This place is beautiful do you come here a lot to star gaze?" The words left your lips with out a second thought, grasping on to what little bravery you had left but determined all the same to have at least a civil conversation with error in hopes of maybe understanding him more till CORE frisks comes to help you again.
"Why do you care?" Error seemed cold, unwilling to share which was quite the contrast to how he was so willing to gloat about himself most of the time. You hesitated on speaking.
"I was just," you hesitated once more heavily weighing your words, "curious. I've never seen anything like this before and it's so vast and beautiful I was just wondering: is this some place you visit a lot?"
Suddenly error stopped walking causing you to skid to a stop as well careful to maintain distance afraid of what would happen if you accidentally collided with him. You couldn't catch much of his expression but he seemed to be looking back and forth between the ground. Right and left his eyes darted until finally he looked up at the stars. He seemed like he was trying so hard to remember something.
His permanent smile shifted to a small frown and his eyes closed as he heaved a breath. Lost in thought it seemed. Did you finally strike a good cord? This felt like a good interaction the first you've ever had other than him giving you food.
"I don't see why you care," his words echoed back on themselves looping as if he was a broken record scratching against the needle, "but I do. This place reminds me of something. I'm not sure what but it's the only place I can think. The anti void gets too noisy."
You don't think either of you have had much conversation since ink paid a visit. A sad attempt to save you. But you don't think you mind. Error seemed hesitant to speak with you for some reason but did anyway.
"If au's deserve to be destroyed, why do you care so much about this one? Shouldn't you of destroyed it a long time ago?" You should have thought more carefully about what you said. Considered your words better but you didn't and that was the bane of your existence now.
Error's complacent and struggling expression suddenly became irritated, drastically changing as he turned to look at you. Hands resting at his side as a cool wind swept past the two of you as you faced one another. It sent a chill down your spine and you noticed his glitching gets worse when he's mad.
"They deserve to be destroyed no matter what. Because he made them. He created them. That wretched! That annoying! That disgusting colorful vomiting!-" error lifted his hands seeming like he was pretending to strangle something. His shoulders tensed his eyes looked crazy as the word error appeared in his eyes multiple times as he choked the air with his hands.
You were shocked taking a step back feeling your anxiety pick up. You were scared at this behavior he was so mad. Was he going to take it out on you?! But still, some how you felt you wanted to know more. You assumed he was ink. Why doesn't error like him? Why is CORE frisk hesitant of him?
"I," your voice caught in your throat, "I'm sorry. I'm sorry he's made you feel this way."
You were sorry. To think, someone so lonely in their own anti void was reduced to hate because of their loneliness. It was stupid of you to feel sorrowful for him when you weren't any better. Stupid to have pity for such a destructive creature. And yet you did.
Error's gaze snapped to you quickly, eyes intensely looking at you as they flickered all around your face intensely meeting your (E/C) orbs in an almost silent shock.
"I don't need your pity, obviously I'm the better out of the two of us. I don't need you trying to act like some kind of disgusting hero." His words were like daggers. And yet you could see it in his eyes. It was like he was softer upon hearing your apology. An apology that wasn't yours to make but you made it anyway.
Was this how Chara felt in the underground? You heard the story, while the monsters were kind in the end and Chara was quick to befriend them all they still attacked them. Wanted their soul for their own or at least for the queen. You wondered did Chara feel scared. Did Chara have a moment like this with a scary monster? A scary monster who wants to destroy everything?
You couldn't help but wonder, is this what they felt like? They were so brave. You wanted to be brave for them. To push forward and not let error take your soul and find a better solution to saving not only your au from him but others. This wasn't just about you anymore it was about everyone else too.
It's what Chara would do. No, it's what you would do too. You and Chara have the same heart. The same compassion for those who need help or are suffering in some form. A want to help. You were going to help.
Suddenly you felt a rush of emotion. Your heart skipped a beat and hour body felt as if it was surging with adrenalin, as you were filled with determination.
You're determined to help error and to save the au's.
"I know you don't need my pity, I was just saying I'm sorry. For everything ink has made you feel." The sudden confidence helped you as you gazed into error's eyes which flickered. Their error message dying down as they looked away from you. He straightened his poster quickly seeming to hiss under his breath.
"You wouldn't understand." Error's hands found their way back into his pockets as he looked back up at the star dazzled sky.
"You'd never understand even if you tried. No one could. Can you even begin to understand what I mean when I say I don't feel like me? That I used to be another me and I can't remember what that me did or who he was? No I don't think so."
Was he, opening up to you? Error seemed different as he looked at the sky. You found your eyes lingering on him though as his words replayed themselves inside your mind. No you don't think you understood that there used to be another him being couldn't remember. But you understood what he meant by not feeling like himself.
"I remember fragments of who I-who he was. The fragments I remember the most are towards the end. Nothing but an intense loneliness and a building blind fury. But you don't really care do you. You're just trying to get me talking so you can save your precious glitch filled au." Error's eyes flickered back to meet your own again his voice glitching worse on itself once more.
"No-no that's not my intention, I just want to better understand why you want to destroy so much." So maybe that was half true. But you wanted a more pacifist solution rather than everyone dying or you dying. What if everyone can be saved?
Error scoffed at your words looking back up at the sky another cool breeze of wind fluttering between you both. Then with out another word error turned to walk back long the path he was following not saying another word. He seemed different like this. A huge contrast to the error you had first met.
To not feel like yourself. You understood that at least. Your parents, though they did love you, didn't make you feel like who you were. Everything you did was to please them and to take care of Chara who was obviously their favorite. Who your parents wanted you to be was not you. And it felt like they trapped the real you behind closed doors with a key in their hands dangling them just within reach only to yank them back the moment you reached.
You understood. But you don't think his meaning was in the same context. But you had something to go off of at least. Something that you could maybe try and use to understand him even if it's only half a percent more than you did now.
"Hungry?" His sudden question threw you off guard as error glanced at you. Something about his demeanor seemed almost relaxed. Even if he seemed tense in the shoulders. He seemed at ease almost. Like he wanted to talk more with you but knew better.
"Um," you hesitated but your stomach spoke for you as it growled in an instant upon the mention of the question. You didn't know how long it's been since you last ate. But time in the anti void definitely moves differently.
"There's a hot cat stand some where over here, if you want that." Error shrugged a bit. Yes he seems different. Is this what he meant by not feeling himself? What was he like in other realities? He looked like sans but he didn't act like him. You wondered how different other "san's" were. And if you live in an au who's the original?
"I'm okay with anything, you are mr captor remember?" You were partially joking and made no effort to hide that fact as error gazed at you for a moment seeming to process what you just said before he groaned and rolled his eyes.
"Don't joke." He seemed almost comedically annoyed at the idea of joking.
"If you're not going to eat anything I'm going to go grab chocolate real fast."
Error seemed like he was about to open another access point to another reality but your sudden grin made him stop confused. Chocolate? Like the wrappers you saw littering the anti void? You should have really guess more or less he ate them. But the fact he likes chocolate so much made you grin. Because I'm some strange way it made you feel closer to Chara.
"What's that weird goofy expression on your face? Stop it, it's freaking me out." Error pointed at your grin with a hesitant look like you were crazy or something of the sort as you gazed at him.
"I'm just smiling what's wrong with that?" You shrugged partially now.
"A lot. A lot is wrong with it cut it out." Error huffed moving his hand back to his pocket looking away pointedly. (Why does his face burn? He doesn't understand.)
"Okay, okay, you mentioning chocolate just makes me think of my sibling." You finally confessed to your smiling shaking your head a little now to try and rid yourself of the wide grin. Error glanced at you from the corners of his eye sockets seeming to be thinking.
"You like that kid a lot." It was all he said and then silence ensued shortly after as he vanished for a moment into another world leaving you here.
He seems definitely different now. But it was a good different the kind you could get used to. Error came back with chocolate securely in his hands and after obtaining what he desired the two of you walked in comfortable silence now towards a hill. It almost overlooked everything, well actually it did. There was an end to the world and it fell off into the vast nothingness of space. But if you didn't linger too close to the edge you think you'll be fine.
Error sat down at the edge and you sat not too far away from him against the grass looking up at the stars in silence before suddenly jerking your body back seeing something shoved in front of you.
Error was looking away as he munched on chocolate in his right hand, but his left extended an untouched chocolate bar out to you for you to take and eat. You smiled again and took it from him with a soft thank you leaving your lips.
Yes this was definitely a change in pace. But you think you like it. Like seeing who the real error was. You don't think he's as bad as he seems to be he just seems misunderstood. Once you get past all his rage outbursts and his desire to destroy that is. But you definitely like this new change. Maybe you could convince him not to destroy any realities. Maybe being a strong word.
Though as the two of you sat together in comfortable silence enjoying your chocolate, wandering eyes from within the shadows watched you both very carefully not making a single sound or effort to move. Stalking. And waiting laying in wait for it's pray.
