One Day At A Time
Me: Hey, guys!
Aragon: I hope you guys are having a happy Easter!
Usnavi: Yep!
Veronica: (on her phone) Welp, looks like Broadway and West End are gonna come back at the end of May or early June after all! Huh...do we have Evan Hansen to thank or something?
Peggy: Ha! Looks like it!
Me: Okay, so for this episode, I have decided what we're going to react to since it's Easter. Drawings will start again next week, so don't be shy to drop a request!
Catherine Parr: So what are we reacting to?
Me: We are reacting to "One Day At A Time"! It's a Netflix show about the Alvarez family, a Cuban-American family living in L.A.!
Carla: Whooo! I've watched that show and I love it!
Sonny: Nice! Way to represent us Latinos!
Philip: It sounds fun!
Heather D.: Maybe I should watch it, or not, depending on how I like this episode.
Me: So we are going to react to the first episode of season two, called "The Turn". So basically, in this episode, the oldest daughter, Elena, gets misidentified as white and that bothers her, and her younger brother, Alex, gets in trouble at school. For what, we'll find out.
[I start the episode]
Laurens: Ooh! Whose baseball game are we at?
Me: Alex's.
[Onscreen: Shake it off, Dylan, shake it off!]
J.D.: Oh, is that the mom?
Me: Yep, her name is Penelope.
Vanessa: Yeah, I don't like hot weather too, Abuela...what's her name?
Me: Lydia. Oh, and she's played by Rita Moreno!
Heather C.: WOW...that's a lot of food...
Daniela: And GOOD food too. You can't go wrong with arroz con frijoles.
Anne Boleyn: Wow! That white guy with them can speak Spanish well!
Me: Yep. That's Schneider. He's Canadian, and the Alvarez' landlord.
Hamilton: Ugh...not "homolingual", Schneider, it's "monolingual"!
Usnavi: What? The vendor thinks Elena is his daughter?
Me: Yep, he thinks that she is white.
Mulligan: WHOOO! ALEX IS UP!
Me: Here we go, Papito!!!
Anna of Cleves: Yay! Alex did it!
Me and the ITH characters: ¡DALE, PAPITO, DALE! DALE, PAPITO, DALE!
Catherine of Aragon: Sorry, um...Spaniard here, what does "dale" mean?
Usnavi: It means "go for it".
[When Lydia waves a giant Cuban flag)
The ITH characters: WHOOOOO!¡¡¡ WEPA!!!
[After the theme song]
King George: Well, looks like that game went really well...
Madison: Yeah...
Philip: Whoo! I like Penelope's little rap!
Laurens: Yeah, it's cute!
[When Alex tells them to shut up]
Catherine of Aragon: WHOA, WHOA, WHOA!!
J.D.: And I oop...
Eliza: I mean, his family was just showing him support and cheering him on...
Me: Ah, well, there's a darker reason to why he lashed out.
Jane Seymour: Who's the new guy Penelope's talking to?
Me: That's Dr. Berkowitz, her boss. She works at a clinic as a nurse.
Angelica: Yeah, kids DO grow up fast.
Eliza: Yep! It seems like yesterday, Philip was just a cute little boy...
Philip: Ma!!!
[When Penelope has to take Alex home from school]
Heather C.: Huh, looks like goody-goody Alex got in trouble!
J.D.: He punched a kid? Sounds like something I would do...
Veronica: Jason Dean!
Me: Yeah, he punched a kid because the kid was being a jerk.
[Onscreen]
Lydia: It's okay if it's about a woman.
Penelope: No, mami, it's not.
Alex: He said "Go back to Mexico"!
[Cut back to us]
Sonny: (Stands up) OH I WILL...
[Usnavi has to hold him back]
Usnavi: Sonny! Cálmate!
King George: Wow...the nerve of that kid...
J.D.: Yep... I would've punched him, too.
Katherine Howard: Wow...
Laurens: Yeah, this is NOT okay.
Me: Yeah, so Alex and a friend were talking in Spanish, and then...
Daniela: Wait, this stuff's been going on for some time?
Vanessa: "Build the wall"...oh my God, I can't BELIEVE some people.
Anne Boleyn: I KNOW, right?!
Peggy: Yep, people can be jerks.
Jefferson: Well, Penelope's right...unfortunately, things like that happen here in America...
Hamilton: Yea-WAIT! Didn't you, Burr, and Madison say that, and I quote, that I "best g'wan run back where I come from"?!
The SMFDR: Uh... (Sinks down in their chair so the camera can't see most of their faces)
Daniela: That's just cold...
Anne Boleyn: Ha! "Trust fund manchild baby"!!! (Laughs while pounding her fist on the desk)
Anna of Cleves: OHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
Mulligan: HAAAAAAA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!
Veronica: (Laughs, too)
Aragon: Oi...
[When Penelope talks to Alex in his room]
Peggy: Awww! A heart to heart talk between mother and son!
Me: But the harsh reality of it all is that there's no guarantee that it won't happen again.
[When the Alvarez's go out for ice cream]
Sonny: Okay, does that guy own that place, huh? And "fiesta"?! And not used in a GOOD sense?! What the heck?!
King George: (About what the guy onscreen said) Wrong choice of words there, buddy!
Me: Yep...at least Penelope put him in his place...and he realized that it WAS a wrong choice of words.
[When the episode ends]
Me: So what did you guys think?
Jane Seymour: It was a good episode, it combined laughs with some serious issues like racism.
Eliza: Yeah, and this kind of stuff should not happen with anybody. We should be treated as equal. No one should be subjected to that kind of treatment because their skin color is different!
Sonny: Yeah! Eliza's right!
Angelica: Yeah, I think I'm gonna binge the rest of this show tonight!
Philip: Whoo! I'm with you, Aunt Angelica!
Carla: I highly recommend it!
Me: Okay, that's all the time we have for today! Thanks for watching! Feel free to vote, comment, and leave a request! Bye!
