part 3; chapter four
"Hurry!" You ducked inside of a moving vehicle, which was covered with torn tapestries and ripped fabrics. You stared at the disguised figure in front of you. Could you trust whoever it was?
"Leia sent me a transmission," they said.
"How'd you find us?" Finn asked breathlessly, holding on tightly to something hanging overhead.
They removed their helmet, and you heard the sharp intakes of breath by your side. "Wookies stand out in the crowd," he laughed. You glanced around at your friends.
Chewbacca roared in complete happiness and pushed his way between you and Poe. You staggered to the side as you watched him embrace the old man tightly.
"Good to see you too, old buddy!"
"This is General Lando Calrissian," C-3PO introduced.
"We know who he is, Threepio," Rey said, smiling.
"It is an honor, General."
"You're Lando Calrissian," you said, and everyone looked to you.
"You don't recognize me?" he asked. You shook your head and he chuckled. "Well, I had to pop up in your history classes somewhere, didn't I?"
"Uh, she had a different kind of teaching where she grew up," Poe said with a laugh. "Whatever she learned about you, you were not painted as the good guy, I'll tell you that much."
"Ah, I see. You are a child of the First Order," he said, nodding.
"Not anymore," you said. "I'm a member of the Resistance."
"And one of the best ones we've got," Poe added. "General Calrissian, we are looking for Exegol."
The smile on Lando's face vanished. He glanced over the group and sighed, "Of course you are." He sighed again, tiredly, and pulled his sleeve up. He pressed something on the band on his wrist. A flickering holographic image popped out of the band. "Only two were made."
"A Sith wayfinder," Rey said. BB-8 chirped nervously. "Luke Skywalker came here to find one."
"I know, I was with him," Lando said. Rey's jaw dropped. "Luke and I were tailing an old Jedi hunter." He pressed the band again. "Ochi of Bestoon. He was carrying a clue that could lead to a wayfinder. We followed his ship halfway across the galaxy here. When we got to his ship, it was abandoned. No clue. No wayfinder."
Rey's eyebrows furrowed. "Is Ochi's ship still here?"
"It's out in the desert, where he left it," he said.
"We need to get to that ship," Rey said. "Search it again."
Everyone paused when you heard ships whirring in the distance. The sun blinded you as you peeked out of the vehicle; First Order ships were breaking through the sandy, heated horizon and heading straight to where you were.
"I got a bad feeling about this," Lando said. "Ochi's ship is out past Lurch Canyon. Go."
"Thank you, General."
As you and Poe jumped out of the moving vehicle with Finn and Chewie right behind, Rey looked back at Lando. "Leia needs pilots, General."
"My flying days are long gone," he said, shaking his head. "But do me a favor. Give Leia my love."
"You should give it to her yourself," she said. "Thank you."
The sounds of the ships were deafening as they flew in on the planet. You were in a full out sprint; the sun beating down hard on you. Your staff felt twenty pounds heavier on your back now.
But thankfully Poe found speeders. He pointed to them. "There! Those speeders!" He ran faster, encouraging you to do the same. He slid underneath one of them, fingers pulling at wires so he could fire it up. You got down on your knees beside him.
"Poe. Can I help?" He'd taught you one or two things about ships since you'd met him.
"Yeah," he said, "remember what I told you about firing one of these up? You remember how it's done?"
"Yes," you said.
"Then you go do that one." He jerked his head in its direction.
You obeyed, working your fingers with the wires. You heard Poe's start up with a loud sound.
Finn pressed his lips together and shook his head. "How do you know how to do that?"
At the same time, yours started up. Poe ignored Finn and looked at you and grinned. "That's my girl."
"No need to worry! I made it!" C-3PO said, but everyone ignored him as the angry chatter of the locals became apparent and worrisome.
"We gotta go!" Poe said. He jumped on top of his speeder, and you jumped up on yours.
You pulled Rey up with you and glanced over to make sure that Finn and Poe were ready to go. Poe's eyes locked on yours and he nodded, giving you the encouragement you always needed. You smiled confidently at him.
As the speeders raced across the flat sandy ground, you felt a nice breeze against your skin. Which would have been more enjoyable, were it not for the fact that the wind was accompanied by shots of weapons that whirled past your head. You ducked and Chewie roared. Rey glanced behind her and fired her blaster back at them.
BB-8, nervously ducked down at your feet, chirped. You stooped down and put your hand on him.
You glanced back up, only to see two of them launch into the air. "Oh!" cried C-3PO from the other speeder, "they fly now!"
Finn looked at Poe. "They fly now!?"
"They fly now," he said.
"Of course they fly," you yelled, pulling out your blaster. "This isn't really that new!"
You fired at them in the sky, but as Rey jerked the speeder to the side, you missed. BB-8 rolled and squealed. You caught him with your free arm and held him in place as you fired again and again. Part of you realized that Poe was now out of sight, but you didn't let it get to you as you focused on the fight and the task at hand.
You were a soldier, and it was time to act like it.
With a grunt, you stood up and fired at one of the flying soldiers. BB-8 chirped loudly again. You looked down at him and he poked at a canister in front of him. He punctured it and out spilled a cloud of heavy yellow smoke. You waved it away from your face but took the opportunity to fire with your blaster, Rey following suit.
"Never underestimate a droid," Rey said, prompting a smile out of you.
Chewbacca shot the last one out of the sky, and then there was silence. Rey grinned and pointed at something up on a cliff. "Ochi's ship! I've seen that ship before."
"Rey! Did you get them all?" Poe and Finn shouted. A wave of relief washed over you as you saw that they were safe and close to you again.
As Rey opened her mouth, blinking confusion out of her eyes, you felt a blast hit the sand in front of you and your speeder flipped. You screamed and Rey cried out. You faintly heard Poe scream for you, and as you landed hard on your back, in a rougher feeling sand, you saw that their ship had been shot down, too.
You hurriedly got up onto your knees and fired at the soldier that was flying far above you. You missed, and it wasn't until Rey started shooting that he flew directly into the rocks. You let out a sigh of relief, and then the ground underneath you shifted.
"Gah! What is this?" Poe asked, on his back.
You dropped your blaster and fell forward on your hands. You felt yourself get swallowed up to your elbows. A panicked breath slipped out of you as you struggled to stretch your neck and keep your head above. Your legs were vanishing beneath you. "Poe!" BB-8 screeched. "BB-8!"
Rey shook her head. "Sinking fields! Try to grab something!"
"Will this agony ever end?!" C-3PO cried.
You looked around, but there wasn't a single thing close to you. You couldn't pull yourself up on anything. You desperately looked at Poe, who reached for you. You tried to grab his hand but you couldn't touch anything but the tips of his fingers. "Poe, what---"
"Try and grab on," he said, stretching his arm, but he quickly realized that it was no use. As he fell back against the sand, feeling it come up over his ears, he forced a smile. "Look, I love you. I never got to ask---"
You watched in horror as it swallowed up his head. "No!"
BB-8 screamed again. You twisted your back and reached for him, but just as his head slipped through the sand, you felt it cover your eyes. Finn called for Rey, and then you were falling.
