Chapter 35: Z Fighters vs. The Androids
A/N: Now, ahem... *dramatic announcer voice* In no time, three years have come and gone... Ready or not, Goku and the others have a date with destiny!!
...
Tomorrow we'll be fighting the androids... Luna thought, a chill going down her spine as she walked out into the Son's backyard.
Chi Chi had helped her make a bath in the giant tub outside, leaving her a towel and some shampoo before disappearing to spend some time with her family before they went to sleep. Luna approached the tub, setting her pajamas on the grass before eyeing the steaming bath in front of her happily.
This is just what I needed... She thought with a sigh, looking around once to make sure she was alone before starting to disrobe. Luna hopped in the warm water, leaning against the side as she relaxed, looking up at the moon above her. It's almost full... She realized with a smile, loving when the land was bathed in a silvery light at night. For some reason, she thought about the night when she had come back, when herself and Piccolo had been standing under the moonlight, her arms wrapped around him...
Luna imagined what it would be like if he had held her back, embraced her not as a friend, but as something more...The Acaiian shook her head, sinking down under the water quickly so that just her eyes and the tips of her ears were visible as she felt her cheeks getting hot.
I'm such a pervert... She mumbled in her mind, chastising herself for having those kind of thoughts. Besides, I'm sure he doesn't see me as anything more than a friend... His people don't form intimate relationships... She thought, remembering a few of the things Dende had told her while they were on Namek. The last thing I want to do is make him feel uncomfortable around me...
Luna sighed, bubbles popping all around her before she sat up a bit more to get a breath of air. She leaned down, grabbing the bottle of shampoo as she started washing her hair before getting some well deserved rest herself. After a bit longer the water began to grow cold as Luna knew it was probably time she got out anyway. She stuck her arm over the edge of the tub, grabbing the towel on the grass before wrapping it around herself as she floated upwards in one swift movement. She flared her ki a bit, shaking the water out of her hair as it dried instantly, becoming a bit fluffier in the process. Luna landed on the grass, quickly slipping her shorts and tank top on before pulling her favorite sweater over top of them.
It's getting kind of chilly out here... She thought, hanging up her towel and grabbing her hairbrush before jumping up and landing on the branch of a nearby tree gracefully. She sighed quietly as she sat down, staring up at the stars before beginning the arduous task of brushing her mass of lavender hair.
Luna smiled as she combed out a section of her purple locks, her heart beating a little faster as she sensed someone behind her. She paused for a moment, both of them coexisting in silence before Luna decided to speak her mind, uncertainty lacing her voice.
"Are you nervous?"
Piccolo just made a sound of annoyance, frowning at her as she put the brush she was using down, refusing to look his way as she went on in a quieter tone.
"I am..."
"We've got no reason to be. We're all as ready as we're ever going to be after training for the last three years..." Piccolo said confidently, landing on the branch beside her as he stood there with his arms crossed, frowning at her as he noticed she still wasn't looking at him. "Luna..."
She finally turned his way, staring up at him with an unreadable expression as she thought about everything that might happen tomorrow...
People could get hurt... All the people I care about and all the innocent people on this planet... I can't let them down... Luna thought, gripping her hairbrush tightly as she struggled to keep her emotions under control.
If something happened to any of them... I... I-
"Whatever you're concerned about right now, stop it. Get it out of your head." Piccolo advised in a low voice, staring down at her seriously before continuing. "Worrying isn't ever going to help you on the battlefield... If you're going to fight, you're going to need to remain calm and collected... Even if things get bad, understand?" He finished roughly, wanting her to grasp the seriousness of his words.
"Yes, I'm going to do my best..."
I don't want her to lose control of her emotions... Piccolo thought, frowning as he watched her smile at him weakly before returning her attention to her hair. Piccolo growled, thinking about what had happened on Namek. She's put herself in danger before because she wasn't thinking clearly... That can't happen again... He thought, feeling a strange emotion stirring within him before he shook his head, deciding it was time to call it a night.
"Get some sleep." The Namekian ordered, about to do the same himself as he knew they would all fight better well rested. He glanced at her once more, jumping down from the tree and walking a ways away to sit in his favorite spot, enjoying the cool night air as he closed his eyes for a moment.
"Um... Piccolo?"
Piccolo opened his eyes, seeing Luna standing in front of him, looking rather nervous about something.
"Do you mind if... If I... Do you think I could sit... With you? Just for a little while..." Luna stammered, her cheeks growing pink as she looked at the confused expression on his face. "I... I just... I'm a little cold and-"
Luna gasped as Piccolo stood up quickly, picking her up and sitting back down again in one swift movement as he set her down next to him. She chuckled nervously, glancing up at the man sitting next to her briefly as she noticed his cheeks had a light dusting of purple across them...
The lavender haired woman sighed happily, feeling strangely at ease as they both enjoyed the beautiful nighttime scenery around the Son house. A cold breeze blew by, making Luna shiver as she drew her knees up to her chest, wrapping her arms around them as Piccolo looked over with a frown.
"Tch..."
He grabbed his cape, flipping it over her quickly while looking away, feeling the warmth on his face getting worse as he felt her grab it and wrap it around herself while leaning a bit closer.
Why am I getting so bothered by this? Piccolo thought, seriously wondering what the hell was going on with him lately. Every time I'm around her, I feel so... Strange...
Piccolo was so absorbed with his thoughts on the Acaiian, that he didn't even notice when she fell asleep on him. He looked down a few moments later, feeling the warmth from her body against his side as he watched her for a moment.
She looks so peaceful... He thought, the corner of his mouth turning up a bit as he watched her breathing evenly, her head resting slightly against his chest. She stretched suddenly, Piccolo's eyes going wide as she wrapped an arm around him, snuggling closer before sighing contentedly. Piccolo just sat there awkwardly, his cheeks tinted purple as he tried his best to relax, unable to stop thinking about what they were all going to face tomorrow.
Well at least she's getting some rest... He sighed, glancing down at her sleeping face once more while feeling a bit more at ease. He couldn't bring himself to say it, or really even think of the words yet... But some part of him was glad she was here, sitting next to him. Watching her peaceful expressions as she slept was very calming, especially when he knew that she frequently had terrible nightmares...
The Namekian sighed, closing his eyes as well as he began to drift into a peaceful slumber, the tiniest grin sneaking it's way across his lips as he dozed off...
...
The next day...
...
"Slow down Gohan! We'll get there in plenty of time..." Goku commented, looking up at his son as they all flew towards South City. "You better save your energy for the fight..." He advised, a hint of lightheartedness in his tone.
"Oh... Right dad!" Gohan replied, easing up a bit as everyone else caught up.
Luna floated along next to Piccolo and Goku, lost in her own thoughts as she only half listened to the conversation the two of them were having.
This is it... This is the day we've all been training so hard for... She thought, her eyes narrowing a bit as she thought back on everything they had gone through until this point. I wonder what these androids will be like...
"For three years... Three years we've trained just for this moment..." Piccolo said seriously, not taking his eyes away from the horizon in front of them as he spoke. "But was it enough?"
"Why don't you ask me again this afternoon," Goku said with a smirk. "I think we'll know by then..."
"If only we'd had more time..." Piccolo growled, frowning as he thought about what else he would have liked to improve. "I feel like there's so much more I could have done to prepare..."
"Don't say that!" Goku interrupted, glancing over at Piccolo seriously. "You did as much as you could Piccolo... We all did... What do you think Luna?" Goku asked in a lighter tone, glancing up at the girl flying next to them as she looked back in surprise.
"I... I'm as ready as I'll ever be I suppose..." Luna said lowly, Chi Chi's words playing through her mind as she thought about the promise she had made her. "But I feel like together, all of us can win..." She admitted confidently, grinning at Goku as he smiled back before returning his attention to his son ahead. Luna chanced a glance over at Piccolo, noticing that he seemed very focused as he flew, his usual serious expression gracing his features as she smiled, remembering waking up to it this morning...
Luna giggled in her mind as she recalled Piccolo getting her up in a rush, her lavender hair still only half brushed as he picked her up before shoving her towards the door to the Son's house. They only had time to eat their breakfast, change and say their goodbyes before taking off towards South City as Chi Chi watched them all go, praying for their safety...
"Hey guys! Look!" Gohan shouted, getting everyone's attention as they all saw him pointing to something up ahead. "I can see Krillin!"
Goku smiled, speeding up a bit as everyone else did the same.
"Hey Krillin!" Gohan shouted, getting the bald fighter's attention as he turned around, seeing Gohan, Piccolo, Luna and Goku approaching quickly behind him.
"Hey bro, long time no see!" Krillin said happily, smiling at Gohan as he flew next to him.
"Hey Krillin!" Goku said excitedly, flying on his other side as the two of them started chatting. "So buddy... Think you're about ready to tackle a couple androids today?"
"I guess..." He replied, sounding a bit unsure as he frowned. "I just wish things didn't have to be this way..."
"Hey, look up ahead! That must be the island... Right there!" Gohan announced, all of them approaching the large natural structure. Luna's eyes sparkled with curiosity as she took in the view, eyeing the huge city beneath them all with childlike wonder as they hovered closer.
"Wow..."
"Boy... There's a lot more people here than I thought..." Goku admitted, not wanting there to be any unnecessary casualties.
"Yeah, I didn't even know this city existed!" Krillin chimed in, looking around as he saw how populated this island really was.
"It looks like we'll have to divert the androids away from the city..." Gohan said, looking down at all the people below them, totally unaware of their presence. "Cause if we don't, too many innocent people down there are going to get hurt!"
Luna nodded, floating over next to the young Saiyan as she smiled down at him before speaking. "I agree."
"Me too..." Goku said seriously, thinking about just how they were going to do that...
"Let's try not to get too far ahead of ourselves guys..." Krillin said hesitantly, knowing this wasn't something they were going to be able to plan out. "We have to find them first..."
"Then we better start looking!" Goku announced, narrowing his eyes as he noticed a large grouping of rocks overlooking the city. All of them followed his lead, flying over to the cliff below as they sensed a few familiar power levels down there.
"I told you Tien! It's him!" Yamcha said smugly, uncrossing his arms as he waved at the fighters flying their way. "Hey Goku! Down here!"
Luna smiled as she saw Bulma waving up at them as well, her eyes going wide for a second as she noticed she was holding something.
She... She brought her baby... To a battlefield?! Bulma, what are you thinking?! Luna said to herself in panic, looking at the tiny baby in her arms as she sighed. I know it's Vegeta's baby and all... But I think it's a little early for him to be seeing any fights...
They all landed quickly, saying their hello's to each other as Gohan and Krillin stared at the baby in Bulma's arms with confused expressions.
"Hey guys! Wow... You all have been working out, haven't you?" Bulma said happily, checking all of them out once before her eyes landed on Luna's feet. "Oh, Luna!" Bulma cheered, staring at her strange friend delightedly. "You wore the boots!"
Luna just smiled, blushing a bit as she nodded, watching Trunks blink his blue eyes at her before hiding his face in his mother's chest. It did feel strange to have shoes on her feet after spending so much time without them... But this battle was important. And she had wanted to be prepared. As Piccolo had said, they could leave nothing to chance this time. They would need every advantage and ounce of power they could get.
"Bulma! What in the world do you think you're doing out here?" Goku questioned, staring at his long time friend like she was insane.
"I've come to watch you fight silly..." She replied, rocking the baby in her arms a bit as she tried to sound casual. "Oh, don't worry... I'll just stay for a while... And then I'll go home."
"It's not safe here Bulma..." Luna warned, floating over to her as she tried to remain serious before smiling at how cute Trunks looked in his black kitty hat.
"Eh, heh... I, uh... I hope you don't think I'm nuts for asking but uh, what's the deal with the baby Bulma?" Krillin questioned, a nervous look on his face as he glanced back and forth between her and Yamcha.
"Is it your son Yamcha?" Gohan asked suddenly, as everyone remained quiet. "I'll bet he is!"
"Hmpf... He's not my kid..." Yamcha grumbled, crossing his arms as Krillin looked at him in surprise. "And if you think that's a shock, just wait... Wait until she tells you who the father really is..." He said sadly, frowning before walking away a few feet.
Everyone stood there awkwardly until Goku stepped forward, smiling down at the lavender haired baby in his friend's arms before speaking.
"Ha ha ha, I'll bet it's Vegeta, isn't it?" He said happily, holding out his finger while playfully bopping the child on the nose. "Right Trunks?"
Luna just put her hand over her face, letting out an exasperated sigh as Gohan, Krillin and Bulma looked at the Saiyan in surprise.
"Now who told you that Goku?" Bulma said seriously, wondering how he could have possibly known. "I wanted to keep it a secret... I was going to surprise you guys!"
"HAHAHAhaha! Hah, ha ha... Well actually, I just thought I'd take a guess!" Goku stammered nervously, trying to think up a good excuse. "I mean, he kind of looks like Vegeta! Haha ha hahaha..."
"You guessed his name too..." Bulma said suspiciously, knowing something was up.
"Yeah, what are the chances of that, huh?" Goku went on, scratching the back of his head as he laughed. "Maybe I'm psychic! Heh, heh heh..."
"Outrageous..." Krillin mumbled, not believing what he was hearing. "Who would have guessed?! Bulma and Vegeta..."
"Well, since we're on the subject..." Piccolo said, getting everyone's attention as they all glanced up at him. "Where is Vegeta?"
"I don't have a clue..." Bulma said casually, blinking a few times as she thought back on the last few months. "I really haven't seen him around lately... I know he was training to come here, but what, with the baby and all... Well I guess I must have lost track of him."
"He'll show." Goku spoke up, a confident smirk on his face as he thought about the other Saiyan. "He wouldn't miss a fight..."
"Oh yeah, he'll be here..." Luna said with a laugh, knowing Vegeta wouldn't miss a chance to show off. "Even if it's only to fight with you Goku!" She added as the Saiyan in front of her laughed in agreement.
"I left Chiaotzu at Roshi's..." Tien mumbled, getting both of their attention as he looked down, hoping that he had made the right decision. "To be honest with you, I didn't think the little guy would stand much of a chance out here..."
Goku nodded, knowing that was probably a wise choice. They couldn't afford to have anyone they cared about close by...
"Bulma... What time is it?" Gohan asked, watching as the older woman glanced at her wrist to check her watch.
"Well it's... Let's see... According to my watch, it's nine thirty!"
"Bulma! You better get out of here before it's too late!" Goku urged, glaring at her as she grinned at Trunks. "Those androids are going to be here in half an hour!"
"Don't worry... I just want to see what these things look like and then I'll go." Bulma said calmly, glancing back at them like everything was completely normal. Luna sighed, knowing there was no reasoning with the woman once she had her mind set on something.
"Well it's almost showtime..." Tien said, walking over the edge of the cliff as he stared at the city below. "Only thirty more minutes to go..."
