Zane

The time where Zane met Master Wu was a very eventful moment. He remembered working with his father a week or so before his meeting on his falcon friend, trying to improve the heat detector.

Zane always knew he was special at the point in time, he knew he was a robot but he also knew his father never loved him any less for it. Julien was an older fellow, starting to move into his senior days but he was determined to be there for Zane in the time he had.

Julien always explained to Zane why he was created, making sure he never lost sight of his purpose and what he brought to the world.

"You were meant to protect others who cannot protect themselves." He reminded Zane every day.

Zane enjoyed his life in the hideaway inside the tree. He would tinker with his father, chop wood to keep the fire going. The cold weather was always harsher in their woods, the tree wasn't well insulated meaning Julien was prone to getting so cold he was bridging on hypothermia and Zane's wiring started to freeze.

"We'll have to improve that." Julien chuckled after he helped Zane clean the frost off for over the thousandth time. Zane, of course, knew the exact time and when he told it to his father he always chuckled.

One day the weather was particularly harsh. Dark clouds hung in the air and a snowstorm blew harsh winds throughout the trees. Zane took the firewood he thankfully collected before and helped create a nice flame in their fireplace.

They talked and worked on a few inventions when suddenly there was a tap on the door. Zane exchanged a look with Julien. Julien often explained people may come for him because of his sharp mind and ability to create powerful machines.

Zane grabbed the same axe he uses for cutting wood and crept to the door, the falcon watching carefully from his perch. Zane threw open the door and a gust of cold wind ripped through the air. In the white gloom a shivering figure stood me wrapped in a dark cloak.

"Who are you? What do you want?" Zane demanded. They hadn't had visitors in so long and he doubted any of the old ones would come back.

The man threw back his hood, revealing calm eyes and long white hair.

"I'm a traveler hoping to get some shelter with Dr. Julien." The man told him. "I've always had good resistance to the cold but with a storm this harsh I am sure even a polar bear could stand it."

Zane gave him a puzzled look but in his confusion the axe in his hands slipped, moving towards the man's shoulder, but before it hit his shoulder a layer of ice covered that limb creating a bit of an armour when they blade tried to pierce him.

"The Master of Ice!" Julien gasped.

The Master of Ice smiled, gently prying the axe out of the ice covered shoulder and letting the frozen shield fade away.

"Let him in Zane." Julien instructed, the boy nodded and let the strange visitor inside. His brow furrowed when he noticed the Master of Ice watching him carefully.

"I did not know you had a son Dr. Julien." The Master of Ice commented curiously as he took the nice cup of tea Zane offered him while he sat down.

"Yes, Zane is very special to me." Julien smiled at the boy. "I created him a while ago. I wanted to create something that could make a difference in this dark world."

The other man nodded slowly, looking lost in thought as he slowly raised the cup to his lips.

"Is that what you wish to do Zane?" The Master of Ice questioned.

Zane looked confused. "What do you mean?"

"Do you want to follow this path Julien has created you for?" He explained to the young robot.

Zane thought for a moment. "I don't know..." Then he nodded. "Yes, I want to help people. My job is to protect others who cannot protect themselves."

Julian smiled proudly. The Master of Ice's serious expression lifted into a grin as well. "That is a very admirable thing Zane. I know you will go very far."

The Master of Ice stayed the night while the storm blew through. Zane got up in the night to make sure the door didn't break open since the winds were so harsh before. But to his surprise the storm had stopped. The door was wide open though. Zane stepped out curiously and was startled to find the Master of Ice sitting in the snow.

He turned when he heard Zane approaching. "Would you like to sit with me?"

Zane nodded and settled down as the Master of Ice turned to stare at something Zane could not seem to see. Which puzzled the logical robot.

"Storms are cold and dangerous." The Master of Ice spoke.

Zane voiced his agreement. "Yes, increasing temperatures can cause hypothermia and frostbite. As well as a blockage of vision that can be a big concern if it causes you to walk somewhere that is not safe."

The Master of Ice laughed. "But it is also beautiful. Look at the frost on the trees, the icicles hanging so magnificently from the branches like crystals."

Zane blinked. "It is what humans define as 'beautiful'. It is quite nice. Has a little bit of serenity."

"What a great way to put it Zane." The Master of Ice said.

"I have something to tell you. I've been looking for a very special person a long time." The Master of Ice revealed.

Zane looked confused. "If you are implying that I am that person then you must be mistaken, I am not a person."

"That's what makes you perfect for this Zane." The Master of Ice told him. "You are better then some of the people in Ninjago. Some are power hungry and flawed but you have a whole different view on life. You have core instincts and a drive to protect. You are better for this than any person that I could have found."

Zane was thoroughly lost. He couldn't figure out what was going on.

"You wish to protect others." The Master of Ice continued. "I am about to offer you that opportunity. But it comes with responsibility. It will be hard. It will be gruelling. And you life can be on the line at any moment."

Zane raised his head. His job was to protect. He was willing to give up his life for others. "I am to protect others who cannot protect themselves. I will do that even with a cost."

The Master of Ice smiled. "I'm glad."

He raised his hand and pressed his hand to Zane's chest. He closed his eyes as his hand started to glow a light white and blue. The power surged through Zane as his eyes glowed, his body lifted from the ground as the power coursed inside of him.

When he landed the Master of Ice smiled sadly. "Make us all proud Zane."

*******

Zane was chopping wood when his second visitor came. Not long after the first. He hadn't told his father about what the Master of Ice gave him. Somewhere deep inside him he somehow knew that even though whatever power was in him had to be kept dormant and secret for now.

He chopped the wood skillfully, letting the pieces fly through the air like boomerangs as they fell neatly onto his pile. He became aware of a man approaching him. As he turned he saw his father in the background smiling so he knew it was okay.

"Hello Zane." This man was aged just like the Master of Ice but this time with a long beard, while the Master of Ice had eyes filled with curiosity and an underlying look of searching mixed with exhaustion this man's eyes was filled with a strange emotion. Like he had all the knowledge on the world. Instead of searching, he was waiting.

"Hello," Zane replied politely. His brow furrowed. "Have we met?"

"No, but some people would say I have a knack for finding talent." The aged tone was lightened with fondness as his cheeks lifted in a smile.

Zane blinked. "Do you need me to chop wood?" Maybe he saw how well he did at cutting the trees bark.

He have a small chuckle. "Maybe one day, but not today."

"Then why are you here?" This new visitor confused Zane greatly. Not many people came without reason. "Are you lost?"

"Lost, what an interesting word." The old man spoke. "Sometimes one has to be lost in order to be found."

Zane was even more confused now. What did he mean? "That does not make any sense."

"Maybe one day, but not today." The old man told him with a patient voice. He turned. "Good bye Zane."

Zane gave a small noise of surprise. "But-will I ever see you again?"

"Yes," the man didn't turn, only continuing walking on his journey with purpose. As if the end of the path led to somewhere important but the walk there was even more significant.

"But when that day comes you will be asked to do far more than chop wood."
