Chapter 46
When Elwin wakes me up, I have a massive headache. He gives me something to take, but it still feels awful. I just have to make it through Elvin History, then he’ll give me something stronger. I don’t talk much during orientation, explaining that I have a headache. And I can’t focus on anyone’s words. Like the part of my brain that processes words just shut down. I walk into the Elvin History room, and am greeted by Lady Sanja. I really try to focus, but I can’t. My ability to remember stuff is nearly gone, so this class is almost impossible. And the longer I try, the harder it gets.
“Come on.” I say, pulling Dex into an abandoned classroom before lunch.
“What’s going on?” He asks.
“Is it just me, or is it really hot in here?” I say, stalling. I undo the clasp on my cape and set it on a table.
“Maybe. What’s going on?”
“I can’t keep living like this. I can’t remember anything if I try to focus on it, and-” I start crying. Once I start, I can’t seem to stop.
“Hey, it’ll be ok.” He wraps me in a hug, and I rest my head on his chest. “We’ll get this all figured out. I promise.”
“Thanks.” I say after a moment, wiping my eyes. “I’ll go get my cape.”
“Maybe Sophie will know something we can do to get you through the week.”
“Who?”
“Sophie. Your adoptive sister? The you of this universe?”
“What do you mean ‘this universe’?”
“Lori, you’re not from here. You came here-”
“Oh. Right.”
“Have you been doing this before?”
“Yeah. A little. But it’s getting worse.”
“Let’s get to lunch. And we can talk to Sophie.”
“Right. Let’s go.” At lunch, after Dex and I get our food, we head to our normal table, and someone new is sitting there. “Who’s that?” I ask Dex.
“I didn’t realize it was this bad. That’s Sophie.” I walk up to her.
“You’re Sophie, right?” I say to her.
“Yeah…” She looks confused.
“I’m Lori.”
“I know. You’re my sister.”
“I think I would remember having a sister…”
“Adoptive sister, technically, but-”
“Why wouldn’t Edaline have told me about you?”
“Lori! You’re from another universe!”
“Wha- oh… I…”
“What was that?” Marella asks.
“I’m going crazy, that’s what that was.” I slowly slump down in my chair, pushing my food around on my plate.
“You’re not crazy-” Dex starts, but I cut him off.
“I couldn’t remember Sophie when I was looking at her. I just introduced myself to my sister.”
“It’s ok. It will all be better after the reset.” Sophie says.
“It had batter be.” Eventually, lunch ends, and I head to telepathy, despite the fact that it’s probably too dangerous for Tiergan to try looking in my mind, and I can’t pull off any of the skills right now. Then about halfway though, my vision starts getting blurry. Then it snaps back to normal. It keeps fading in and out of focus, so I can’t concentrate on anything.
“I need to see Elwin.” I blurt, interrupting her, and running out of the room. I can barely see where I’m going, when I run into something, and the world goes black.
Short chapter, ik. But I'm running out of chapters. If I don't finish one tomorrow, I'll post an alternate POV instead, since I do have quite a few.
