Maybe Science Class Isn't so bad
Once upon a time in the far away land there were students gathered round. All listening to the teacher talk about chemistry, not sure if half of them were listening though. Where could you find this far away land, well its actually not so far cause you see they were in their science class room in a place called middle school. Or as we call it the worst place e-
"Cady!" called out my teacher Mrs. B form her position at the front of the class, her eyes narrowing dangerously at me.
I quickly closed my notebook and waited to be laughed at. I'm a really good student I swear, I just freak out in front of the class. Sadly my teacher doesn't notice this but the rest of the class does who love to laugh at me.
"Cady why don't you come up here and show us how to determine whether this food is acidic or basic," she said with a thick Irish accent, her eyes still dangerously locked on me. If looks could kill I'd be dead by now.
I gulped nervously looking down at my hands, "yes Mrs. B" I said softly as I did the walk of shame to the front of the class. I looked over to see Logan watching me. My face flushed a deep shade of red and my eyes locked on my feet. When I got up to the front of the class I looked down at the supplies on the table.
There was a lemon, an apple, an onion, and water for the food. There was also a small metal plate and some dish soap. I knew how to do this I just needed to muster the courage to speak. Logan was making this increasingly difficult as my face became a deep shade of red.
I took a deep breath and began to speak. "Y-You all know that if something is low in pH it is acidic and if it is high in pH it is basic." My voice was surprisingly calm with the fact that my heart was almost beating it's way out of my chest.
I took the lemon in my hand and popped it open. "Now acidic foods will be very sour and can be corrosive so if I were to take this lemon and rub it on this plate..." as I spoke I rubbed the lemon against the plate. ".... Then eventually this metal would start to corroded or rust," I said as I held the lemon and plate up.
"Now scientist's do not use the taste test on new chemicals because they could poison them but we all know this lemon isn't going to kill me" I said as everyone laugh but this time with me and not at me due to me giggling a bit. I then took a bite of the lemon my face scrunching up from the sour taste. "Yep this lemon's definitely acidic," I squeaked out as I put the lemon back down.
"Now does any one know what a pH scale is?" I asked as I looked around, sadly no one raised their hand. "Well a pH scale is how we measure how acidic or how basic something is" I said some what calmly as I reached for the dish soap. "Most cleaning products have an average of pH of 9-10 from what I've seen so since their on the higher end they would be...." I trailed off waiting for an answer.
"Basic' said a voice from my right.
As I glanced over to see my hero in this case I saw Logan. Why him out of a class of twenty two him! My face flushed completely red and I found my self at a loss for words. Logan raised a brow and starred at me as if I was insulting him.
I quickly shook my head and looked at my feet then said "c-correct L-Logan". "Now since we said this lemon is acidic from its properties can anyone tell me what its pH would be?" I asked regaining my calm and looking back up. I saw a girls hand raised in the back, thank goodness it was her this time. "Yes Payton" I said acknowledging my best friend with a nod and a smile.
"Lemons have an average pH of about 2.5 so they would be an acid" she said while fixing her glasses, she didn't need them but they made her feel special.
"Correct Payton" I responded as I looked back at everyone else. I opened my mouth and began to finish up "Acids are on the lower end and range from 0-6 in pH or lower and well we already explained their properties".
I giggled a bit and the class laughed but I continued on "bases are on the higher end of the scale ranging from 8-14 in pH, you can usually I identify them by they're slimy texture". I looked back at the dish soap and poured a bit in my hand showing how slimy it was them pouring it into the sink and rinsing off my hand.
"What about something with a pH of 7?" asked a voice form my right again.
I knew who it was but I continued calmly "They would be neutral because 7 is in the middle there are not many substances with a pH of 7 but we have one here it's called water." As I finished I gestured to the glass of water next to me. I then shook off my hands from the water and said "Thank you for listening". With that I proceeded back to my seat happy with what I'd done.
Later after class I walked to the cafeteria but was stopped by Logan. My face again blushed completely red as he starred at me.
"Does blood have a pH?" he asked in a joking voice as he ran his fingers threw his dark hair.
"Y-Yes it's pH is 7-7" I responded in a shaky voice as I starred up at the tall boy in front of me.
"Cool why don't you meet at the corner table I have a few more questions to ask" he said as he walked off to the lunch line.
My face was even redder then before but I brushed it off. Logan just asked me to sit with him! Man maybe science class isn't that boring after all.
The End
