CHAPTER 9

SAM'S POV

"We're going camping..." I looked at Skye with wide eyes, and she smiled back innocently.

"Um, you know, Ryan and I figured it would be a fun outing!" Skye replied cheerfully, but she said it more in a question than anything.

"No, what I think is that you two wanted a good place to-" I started but was soon cut off by a knock at Skye's window, making us both turn our heads.

Her eyes lit up once she saw Ryan, and opened the door to hug him. I watched, not knowing what to do or how to feel about this sudden outing.

Skye has always been spontaneous doing shit like this, I just would have never thought I'd be invited on a camping day with her and her potential boyfriend.

I rolled my eyes, and put my sunglasses on to hide the fact I was not in the best of mood to be here and watch Skye and Ryan stick tongues down each other's throats.

Honestly, why couldn't they of gone alone? I would have been completely happy being alone at home.

Okay...maybe that's a lie, and knowing my best friend, that's why she invited me because she hated leaving me out of things, especially alone during the state I've been in for the past year.

I opened my door and walked around the car. "Hey, Ryan!" I greeted, pushing back the feelings of annoyance toward Skye.

"What's up, Sam? Glad we can all hang and have fun tonight. Sammy's grabbing the camping stuff now." Ryan greeted me, but all I heard was the fact Sammy was there.

Which, I was not informed of.

"What, what?"

"Huh? Oh, um, I think we should head to the spot, yeah?" Skye started to panic, grabbing ahold of Ryan's hand.

"What?" Ryan furrowed his eyebrows, "Don't you need to grab your stuff too?"

"Oh, yeah! Sam will get it, right?" Skye started to speak at a faster speed before grabbing Ryan's arm toward the woods.

Ryan's eyes lit up in realization, and nodded along with Skye. "Righhht! Yeah, see you there."

"Wait! I don't even know my way around this place!" I yelled at the two running towards the woods leaving me alone by the two parked cars parked on a gravel road.

"Okay, I got the-" I heard a voice say, and I already knew who it was. My eyes closed in annoyance before turning around to face the one and only Sammy Sandars.

"Wow! Good job, you got the tent?" My voice was laced with sarcasm, making Sammy's face drop.

"I did! Aren't you so proud of me?" He tilted his head to the side, mocking my sarcasm which he received a death glare from me.

"I can't believe I'm even here." I rubbed my head, mumbling to myself.

"Where's Ryan?" Sammy changed the subject once he realized Skye and Ryan were nowhere to be found.

"He left with Skye. Any chance you know where to find the campsite?" I rolled my eyes, throwing the door open of our car to grab the two bags we had brought.

I closed the door behind me once I grabbed the two, almost dropping Skye's bag in the process.

Damn, Skye packs like she's leaving for a month.

"I wish I didn't, but I do," Sammy replied and started to walk in front of me with the supplies for camping. I was hesitant at first but followed anyway as we made it down a deep hill and into the woods.

There was a dirt pathway that led through the trees that toward above us, and all the leaves were now orange and yellow making me feel slightly happy.

The only thing to be heard were our footsteps against the dirt and the crunching noises of leaves rustling beneath our feet.

"Did you already get us lost?" I asked, glancing around to find Skye and Ryan.

"I wish you would get lost, but no, Ryan always liked to go to this hidden spot when we were younger so I know exactly where he is going."

I made a dirty look at the back of Sammy's back, "For one, I didn't ask to be here. For two, we better be close because my legs are getting tired." I complained, dragging my feet against the pathway.

"You're such a baby, we're here. See?" Sammy nodded toward an opening that led to a field and a small creek that opened up to a larger body of water on the right side.

"Oh, how fun." I sarcastically say, meeting up to Sammy's side.

The eyes of Ryan and Skye widened once they saw us, and I threw my head back in a groan.

"Why didn't you tell me he was going to be here?!" I yelled over at Skye, not caring that Sammy was standing right next to me.

Skye looked guilty as ever as she stood by Ryan, who didn't look so guilty? More scared than anything as the both of us approached the spot. Sammy decided to drop the bags of supplies on the ground and huff.

"I'm sorry, Sam! I know you wouldn't have come if he was here."

"You're right about that one." I shrugged my shoulder, dropping our bags as well before sitting on top of my own.

"Hey! I'm standing right here!" Sammy cut in.

"I know," I replied smugly, crossing my arms in front of my chest.

"Y'all, please! We did this as a fun thing, let's forget your whole hating each other thing and enjoy the night." Ryan shook his head as he started to dig through the supplies and started to get the tent out.

"There better be three tents." I glanced up at Ryan who stopped grabbing things out for a moment before continuing.

"Uh, yeah about that..."

"What?! You said there were three?" Sammy dropped down to the ground next to Ryan as they were unpacking everything for the tents.

"Miscounted?" Ryan questioned himself more than anything and I groaned.

"Looks like me and Skye are sleeping in a tent, and you and Sammy."

"What?! I'm sorry Sam, but..." She looked at Ryan and then back at me as she was trying to talk with her eyes.

I already knew what she was trying to say, and she was trying to have some alone time with Ryan tonight in a tent.

Of course.

"But..." I looked at her with pleading eyes but remembered she did invite me so I could get out of the house and not feel so lonely.

With that, I agreed with her and nodded my head that it was okay.

"I'm not okay with the shit! Sleep next to her?" Sammy motioned over to me as Ryan started to set up the tents.

"What's that supposed to mean?!" I snapped back.

"That I don't want to sleep with you," Sammy replied like I asked the dumbest question in the world, and my eyes rolled at his response.

"I don't want to sleep next to you, but you have to sacrifice things sometimes so looks like we will have multiple pillows as a barrier!" I pointed toward Sammy, and a grin started to play at the ends of his lips.

This fucker thinks it's funny?

"Damn, you'll still catch cooties being in the same tent as me though." A pout fell at his lips, and I quickly stood up to be taller than him, but he then stood up and was towering over my 5'2 frame.

"If I could, I would...I would throw you in that creek!" I pointed over to the body of water next to us.

"That's all you got?" He raised an eyebrow with a scoff as he glanced behind my shoulder at the water.

"Guys! A little help?" Skye interrupted us, making both our heads turn at Skye and Ryan who already had a tent up.

How long did that argument last?

"Oh, sorry!" I quickly went over to help them as did Sammy, and we all did the best we could using the little survival skills we knew.

**********

Two tents were finally set up along with the campfire and chairs set around it. The sky was painted dark blue and purple as the orange and pink soon faded away across the mountains of trees in the distance.

I breathed in the scent of the campfire as my eyes closed. This was calming, I will admit.

"Why are you closing your eyes?" Sammy leaned forward out of his chair.

Other than him, it was calming.

"Shut up, Sammy. Why are you sitting next to me?" I ask, opening my eyes up to be met with his big brown ones. The light of the fire was sparkling against them, and as much as I wanted to strangle the man, I couldn't take away his good looks.

"Because why wouldn't I sit next to my best pal?" He looked shocked that I would say such a thing, and I rolled my eyes at him.

"Fuck off."

"You always have a way with words." He winked back as he sat back in his seat, and I shook my head.

"You know, you sure do too. A way to annoy me every day we are on this earth together." I smiled sweetly back at him, and he returned it.

"Oh, I sure do try."

"Guys! We got the cooler of drinks!" Skye and Ryan come out from the distance, rolling a cooler and it feels like forever since they have been gone.

I honestly don't even want to know what they did when they went to get the cooler.

"About time, I didn't know how much more I could take talking to Sam." Sammy stood up from his seat as he walked over to the cooler and the group started to get red solo cups out.

"Excuse me? You're the one who sat by me." I got up from my seat and was handed a cup in my head by Ryan.

I looked down at the cup, debating if I wanted to drink. The last time didn't end so well with me, I ended up tucked in bed by Sammy.

"You okay, Sam? You don't have to..." Skye spoke so only us two could hear, and I nodded my head as we connected eyes.

"No, it's fine." I shook my head and raised my cup for Ryan to pour alcohol inside it.

Ryan smiled, "Here you go, champ."

I scrunched my eyebrows together at his funny wording. They had to have shots already.

We all finally had our cups filled and stood in a circle as the sound of the wood crackling in the back.

"To new relationships," Ryan raised his cup as he looked at Skye with a wink, "And to new friendships." He finished, looking at the rest of us.

I smiled and raised my cup with the others before throwing back the drink.

I scrunched my nose at the gross aftertaste and promised myself that this would be my only drink of the night.

But hey, that's what they all say, right?
