Chapter 8
"Then...how do you know who the right person is?" Masuda looked over the first page of report again while (y/n) reviewed the second page. "Sure, their name is here, but there's no way to confirm who it is without a picture."
"I can track mages by coming in contact with whatever spell they leave behind. It gives me their memories up until the point that they casted the spell, and I can get short glimpses, or visions, of what they did at the time of the casting," (y/n) explained. He accidentally kicked his bag which sat nearby on the floor.
"That would mean we would have to check practically the entire staff of the Clock Tower if not more. There are far too many mages in London. That can't possibly work." Of course, it was natural for Masuda to be skeptical of (y/n)'s method. He had never seen the ability in action.
"Usually that would be the case, but I have Gilgamesh on my side. His clairvoyance is usually one hundred percent accurate. The only problem is that for whatever reason, it's limited by some unknown force. He can only use it for short periods of time and it has a cool down of sorts." (Y/n) looked over to where Gilgamesh stood near the single window in the room. His gaze was distant, as if he was deeply troubled by something. "I think that throne of heroes thing you mentioned might have something to do with it. We get glimpses of wars he doesn't remember fighting whenever I enable his clairvoyance," (y/n) added, almost whispering so that Gilgamesh did not hear him.
Masuda caught on and lowered his voice as well. "You have to enable it? And what do you mean by we? You can see the visions too?"
"Yeah, I'm pretty sure there are some abilities that servants are forbidden from using depending on how powerful they are. For some reason though, I can void that restriction for a short time. Both of us see the visions but I'm usually the one getting the consequence of bypassing the restriction," (y/n) explained.
"What exactly are you?" Masuda wondered. He was more curious than anything.
"I'd like to think that I'm still somehow human," (y/n) admitted. The two of them fell silent. (Y/n) still didn't understand his origins nor did he know the full extent of his abilities. Much about himself was still a mystery.
"Human or not, I appreciate your help. I'll have to repay your kindness somehow." Masuda stood up from the couch and held the paper in his hands up to the light. "Maybe I could look into the organization for you once I find my master. At least, I hope I can. I don't know exactly why you're after these people, but you have a servant yourself. That means they're likely a common enemy."
"Night has almost fallen. Be ready to start the search," Gilgamesh spoke up. "I think it's best if that boy goes with us. I have not yet granted him my trust."
"Alright, let me get these last few details memorized before we go," (y/n) replied. "I'll keep an eye on him too, don't worry."
"Kings do not worry," Gilgamesh scoffed.
"Kings may not worry, but you do. As far as I've been taught, you were still a good one despite that. I promise, I'll be careful. Shir- I mean, Masuda might end up helping us out a lot if we play our cards correctly." He recieved no reply.
"Where do we check first? The Clock Tower is a good distance away from here. Unless they planned to use their own enemies to avoid another enemy," Masuda wondered. He gave (y/n) back the paper containing details on the target's habits.
"We don't need to worry about that. Did you already forget?" (Y/n) put the forms away and looked to his servant. Gilgamesh's suddenly distant attitude bothered him, but he wouldn't question it. He knew that he would be told about whatever was bothering the king later on. "Do you want to do this now or...?"
"Go ahead and get it over with," Gilgamesh sighed. He himself hated the fact that he couldn't access his own clairvoyance at will, and the process itself was moreso an invasion of privacy if (y/n) held the spell for too long. Already, (y/n) had gotten glimpses of Gilgamesh's past life by accident because of just how fragile the process was.
"If you don't mind, Masuda, I'm going to need you to stay quiet. I need complete focus," (y/n) informed. He approached Gilgamesh who was already looking annoyed even though nothing had happened yet.
The first thing (y/n) did was cast a stealth barrier, a form of magecraft that only he could use thanks to the strange energy that resided within him. It blocked magic, sound, and even light from entering or leaving it though physical objects remained unaffected.
(Y/n)'s command seals glowed their usual cyan as he continued on to focus on drawing the spell he had created to access his servant's clairvoyance. In truth, all he needed to do was trace the symbol of his command seals in the air and focus on what it was that he wanted to do. The spell had many uses in this way, but he had yet to try any due to how risky it was.
Once the symbol had been copied in front of him, glowing in red between himself and his servant, he put all of his attention into directing his energy into it. The lights flickered just as the room erupted in a bright flash of crimson, blinding everyone present.
When (y/n) opened his eyes, he was standing right outside a restaurant window. Siding just behind the glass were two siblings, one of which was the target that (y/n) was after. Despite being outside, he could hear their conversation. "That's roast, Fiore. It's really good, you should try it. It's similar to the kind we used to have when we were kids," the target said to his sister. (Y/n) didn't think his target would be so young. The information only gave his hight, weight, and other general details, but Caules' age had been left out of the information. (Y/n) now had reason to believe that it was on purpose.
"I want to try something entirely new! I won't be here to visit you for much longer, you know," Fiore said with a pout. Rather than listening any longer, (y/n) decided to gather critical information about his surroundings such as the street he was on and the name of the restaurant. He was even able to catch the time thanks to an analog clock on the wall within the restaurant.
"One hour from now," he noted to himself recalling that the time of the vision was not always on track with the time that the spell was casted. He was about to return to reality when he heard his servant's voice. "Not again," he mumbled as he turned around knowing that Gilgamesh, in his servant form, was never able to be present during the spell. As he turned around to face the king, he found himself warped to Uruk. Though he had already ended the spell, (y/n) was stuck seeing the after-effect which was often a glimpse of Gilgamesh's past.
The king sat boredly on his throne, head resting on his hand with his eyes closed. "Now is not the time to be starting fights." He opened his eyes to stare at (y/n), scaring him for a moment before he realized that there was someone behind him.
"You just seemed unamused. Was my assumption incorrect?" The person that had spoken had long green hair and was dressed in simple white, reminding (y/n) of when he was younger and wore something similar. (Y/n) had actually never seen this individual before, often times seeing others instead such as Siduri and Ishtar. Then, just as quickly as the scenery had shifted, it vanished. He was back in the hotel room now, standing in front of the fading glow of his casted spell.
"Found him," he stated. (Y/n) resisted saying anything more since he knew that Gilgamesh was aware of the memory invasion. The king had never mentioned that new person, and had already made it clear that (y/n) was not to ask questions about his servant's past. "Looks like we're all going to dinner," (y/n) added.
