o2. january || redraw of empty
daaammnnn..... just now realised that i never uploaded this drawing o.o"
either way... i'm writing this thing in march, so pls don't expect too many details on the process ^-^"
let's get to it then! first and foremost, a smol doodle i made for the new year and my birthday... stil like how it turned out hehe >w<
so... a few years back, when i was still a little art-baby, i drew three pieces... drowned, lost and empty. and last year i decided to redraw them all, ending up with the last one of the three being completed just after the new year >w<"
if you're curious about the other two redraws.... either just scroll down or maybe head over to my old artbook "jade" and check those chapters out ^-^
the old drawing of empty was heavily inspired by the artist danica sills... she still is a huge inspiration for me, but back then... dude i was so determined to draw exactly like she did, which is very visible in empty specifically xD
at the time i didn't understand colours or lighting as well as i do now. and even though i had no idea what i was doing, i still love some areas of the palette... the aggressive contrast between the green skin and those shadows... the collar-bone area where shadows and blush mic from this blue/purple, over a dark magenta into a peachy orange, before turning green... rlly like that part still.
and this was something that i lost along the path of my artistic journey pretty quickly... i turned to a lot more realistic lighting situations, rarely going to extremes or pushing my rendering to a more abstract limit.
so when it came to empty, this was one of the main elements i wanted to re-introduce to my style, so i really tried to get those dark purple shadows in there again, with those muddy colours in the deepest shadows, emphasizing the lifeless nature of the piece.
i also wanted to give more attention to the glowing skeletal structures, since i only used to be able to portray those in markers or watercolours at the time of the original... and you can see how well that translated to the digital medium... >w<
and lastly... i really wanted to capture the vibe a bit better the character is supposed to look empty... either dead or posessed, but still with an expression of worry on the face. my lack of understanding of the facial features held me quite a bit back with the old one, causing a stiff portrait with weird eyebrows ^-^"
honestly i think this is my favourite of the trio... yet again >w<"
still very happy with the colours and shading even though i would probably tackle some aspects quite a bit different now, after two months since it's completion already passed. i most certainly want to do more abstract shading attempts for sure though, since this was not only fun, but opened up an entire different dimension of setting the mood for a piece :0
either way, that's that then! here you have the three of them together again... wanted to add a collage of the three old ones here as well, but wattpad just doesn't want me to upload that specific image ig :|
hope you guys liked this very belated chapter and the piece it presents! i for sure still like this one a lot... drown is a close second, even though the swirls around the character could have been made a lot more.. uuhh.... compositionally flattering(???) and lost totally is just a trainwreck compared to the other two redraws, hehe... probably will draw that one again to make it fit the other two more ^-^""
