October

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! I've been working on this (for the most part) all month?!

This happens before episode 23 but imagine that it happened afterwards and someone thinks that they see Chase's ghost around Everston and flips out and the main cast just breaks down because feels ;^;

I just realized that the timeline for this actually doesn't work because Halloween happens before the winter ball which happens before Valentines when Melissa discovered her heritage... eh oh well Jax will be missing on this particular Halloween that doesn't fit into the timeline but somehow also does :D

—————————

Melissa closed her eyes and tilted her head up, letting the chilly autumn breeze blow through her aqua curls. The weather had changed overnight- just yesterday it had literally been shorts-and-T-shirt weather. Students in school had been joking that nature was skipping the good October weather this year and was going to stay hot until the first snowfall, but Melissa was very glad that nature had not done that and had blessed them with the perfect atmosphere for Halloween.

Melissa's phone was constantly vibrating inside the hidden pocket in her school uniform skirt- when she had gotten off the bus Ivy and Quinston had been debating what Melissa. Should be for Halloween.

It was only a few weeks away and she still didn't have a costume!

Melissa had not actually planned on trick-or-treating. That was something she had always done with Jax, but with him missing she felt guilty going without him. They had gone together for as long as she could remember and it was going to have been some time that she could actually spend with him since school and drama had split them apart in the past months.

But both Quinston and Ivy had profoundly refused to accept this and had agreed that they would help Mel make up lost time...

...and then immediately got into an argument on what she should dress up as.

Melissa honestly wondered how the two were the ones that got this friend group together.

Ding dong!

"I got it, mom!" The bluenette exclaimed and raced down the stairs. It was evening, which was a suspicious time for someone to be ringing the doorbell.

Melissa opened the door to find no one there.

"Hello?" She called uncertainly. I should have brought a knife in case this is another kidnapping... I guess my magic will have to do?"

"Is anyone there?" Melissa stepped forward and lightly kicked something with her foot.

There was a small tin pail filled with small candy on her porch?

The adopted Magiclica picked the basket of goodies up and looked around once more before heading back inside.

"What was it, honey?" Her father looked up from his (parenting) book as his daughter entered the living room.

"I'm... not sure?" Melissa replied. She lifted the basket in her grasp. "This was on the front porch."

Her mother gasped excitedly. "We've been booed!"

"Booed?" Both Melissa and her father echoed.

While Amanda took the basket from her daughter and started talking nonsense about needing to put another basket together and coming up with an elaborate plan to hide it ("Melissa! Do you think you could use your magic and float it over to the neighbor's doorstep? It would be like a ghost was actually there! OooOoo!") the other two family members were completely lost on this apparent Halloween neighborhood tradition.

"We completely need to go by Everston. I heard last year there was a small carnival set up and there was a 'dunk-the-teacher' booth and Principal Lawrence's wig fell off multiple times," Quinston suggested, failing to suppress the humor in his voice.

Ivy gasped over the phone. "Guys. We. Could dunk. Mr. Foleeeyyy!!" She emphasized in conniving excitement. Melissa chuckled and rolled her eyes; everyone knew Ivy thought Mr. Foley was actually a really great teacher, but she still liked to torment him in conversations for some strange reason.

"And risk an F on your assignments for the next quarter?"

"If he's volunteering then he can't hold it against the students."

"What if he's testing us to see if we'll actually mess with the terrifying Adam Foley?"

"Why are you guys even debating this?" Melissa asked the two headstrong people in the call. They were supposed to be planning their route for trick-or-treating so Melissa's and Chase's parents would stop freaking out. AKA not debating whether or not to dunk their homeroom and Advanced Magic Usage teacher.

"B-Because they're Q-Quinston and Ivy," Chase answered.

"Excuse me, are you suggesting something, Mr. Walker?" Quinston immediately accused.

Melissa could almost see Chase's cheeky smile as he replied: "Not a thing, Mr. O-O'Kouzlo," She found herself grinning at his guilty innocence.

Ivy giggled while Quinston sighed exasperatedly. "Whatever."

"Hey guys, do you think we can go by the forest? Y'know, spooky trees, weird noises, Halloween spirits..." Melissa suggested. The tense moment of silence gave away the hesitance to go near the local forest, all four of them knowing who resided in a hidden bunker that lay in there.

Quinston broke the silence. "Sure. Maybe I can get in touch with... Kai... and see if he wants to come with?"

"Sure!" This works out great, Melissa thought to herself. Not only did their pining gay get to hang out with his crush, but Melissa might be able to get to know her adoptive-brother-on-her-biological-father's-side a little more than him standing up to Ichiro in the White Stone room. Ivy grudgingly agreed (Mel knew she wasn't quite convinced that they could trust the Spero boy) and Chase agreed without any particular concern.

"So, just to make sure, we'll meet after my Eversingers gig at the mall, I'll change into my costume, and then we'll go by the forest, then go through some neighborhoods and finish by messing around at Everston. Sound like a plan?" the blue-haired girl summarised the plans they had made so far.

The other three gave confirmations before Ivy's parents called her and she had to leave. With that, the boys left the call and Melissa was left smiling at her phone with a good feeling about this year's Halloween.

"Melissa! Welcome to my pumpkin patch!"

The adopted Magiclica waved to her purple-haired friend who was standing behind a booth in her front yard. Ivy greeted Melissa's parents that were with her and immediately took on her confident, conniving attitude that Mel was very familiar with from school.

"Ivy, what are you thinking...?"

"Misters and Misses Sterling, how are you? What can I do for you today?"

Melissa's mother chuckled. "We're here to pick a few pumpkins. We saw the sign and thought we'd come investigate!"

Melissa had nearly done a backflip when she saw the sign along the road advertising "Ivy White's Pumpkin Patch!" At her friend's address when she knew that Ivy did not have her own pumpkin patch anywhere around her yard.

Ivy nodded, smiling. "Well, thank you for choosing me! Now come on, I'll give you the tour." She stepped out from behind her booth and waved them forward. Melissa jogged next to Ivy.

"I know that look and you better not be planning something..."

The girl with the flower crown gasped. "Mel, I would never. You're my best friend! There's totally nothing against you here, I promise." With that they had entered Ivy's backyard and walked into- you probably guessed it, a sprawling pumpkin patch within the wooden fence boundaries.

"I don't trust that statement..." Melissa sighed. Her Cipher parents gasped when they were amazed by the magic that was being used. Ivy glanced over her shoulder with a smirk and held up her sparkling purple-green hand. She pointed her index finger at one of the plants, and a new pumpkin blossom budded and before their eyes changed from a yellow flower to a hard orange fruit.

"Would you look at that, Amanda! I would never thought to use magic to do something like that!" Melissa's father exclaimed to his wife.

"Of course you wouldn't. You don't even know that a pumpkin is a fruit."

"I do too!"

"Then why were you looking in the fresh vegetables section of the grocery store for those gourds I asked you to get the other day? They're not refrigerated and they're not cantaloupe."

Ivy was obviously trying to hold in her laughter at Melissa's parents' argument.

"Are they like this all the time?" She asked the bluenette.

"You have no idea," Melissa whispered back.

The glass door to Ivy's house opened and Misses White waved from the porch.

"Hello Melissa! Oh, are they your parents? Hello, I'm Misses White, Ivy's mother. Good to meet you!" She teleported down the steps to where Melissa's parents were, startling the both of them.

"You're parents aren't used to Magiclicas, are they," Ivy said that as more of a statement than a question.

Melissa sighed. "Nope! They still freak out when I do a little sound burst just for the fun of it." She started to look around the garden for a good pumpkin.

Almost immediately Ivy waved her over to the other side of her backyard. "I was hoping some of my classmates might stop by, so I have a couple of special things over here."

At this moment, Melissa knew she was done. She was past the point of no return and was going to die a horrendous death at the hands of her evil, conniving, innocent plant-wielding BFF. The bluenette stepped over a pumpkin plant that was in the way and joined Ivy.

"What do you think?" Ivy questioned.

Melissa was confused. Instead of the usual, plump, orange pumpkins, there was a variety of gourds in strange shapes and scattered ghostly white pumpkins around as well. She had seen plenty of these oddities being sold with the normal pumpkins alongside the road and did not know what was so special.

"What, the white pumpkins? Am I going to be thrown into a murder mansion with the boys and have to escape you?" Melissa teased.

Ivy rolled her eyes. "Oddly specific. No, look!" She pointed to the warty gourds. Melissa kneeled down and picked up one before shrieking and dropping the gourd. In the bumps and dips of the pumpkin had been a highly-realistic Connor with his eyes closed, startling the girl because she was not expecting to see the head of her club staring back at her in mottled orange, green, and black. The pumpkin's expression reminded Mel of the horrifyingly calm faces of the students who had been cursed into a coma that she had discovered. To see that on a pumpkin was only slightly ominous.

"Oh my, wow, alright, okay then, Ivy," Melissa rambled, a hand on her heart and a rather awkward expression on her face. Ivy groaned.

"I was hoping you would pick a different pumpkin! It's a lot scarier when you get like, hm, this one!" Ivy glanced around and grabbed a different gourd, spinning around rapidly and shoving a man's demonized face in her friend's.

Melissa pushed the pumpkin away and looked at it for a moment. "Is that Mister Foley?"

Ivy's face turned slack and she quickly put the pumpkin down without a word.

Ivy's mother called them from the front corner, telling them to stop goofing off and pick a pumpkin already. Melissa's father absently told the ladies that the girls should be able to do their thing, to which his wife retorted that Melissa did that and seemed to be getting into a lot of trouble recently. This started another conversation between the parents as Melissa and Ivy flushed, knowing that they had been getting deep into the drama recently. At the same time, it wasn't completely fault, as you can't exactly choose for the leader of the antagonists to be your biological father.

"They're going to be here for a while..." Ivy sighed. "Pick a pumpkin and want to come inside?"

Melissa shrugged, smiling. "Sounds good with me!"

The final bell of the day rang.

"Thank goodness!" Quinston exclaimed loudly and jumped up from his seat.

It was Wednesday and everyone had been waiting in anticipation for the day to pass so darkness could fall and they would have free reign over the city for one night.

It was the thirty-first of October after all! All Hallow's Eve, the one night a year that the creatures of the other worlds could walk this one and terrorize its inhabitants.

Melissa was getting a little superstitious.

Astrology.com said that this month would have something exciting happen that would lead into new adventures in the future. It's the last day of the month, what could happen that leads into November? Astrology.com has never been wrong before...

Melissa and Quinston (who had last class with her) walked out of class, talking excitedly about their plans for the evening. Melissa still felt guilty about not being able to go with Jax but without any clues as to where he had gone she couldn't go looking for him like they had her parents. Quinston had an odd look on his face throughout his bluenette friend's rambling, although Melissa knew not for what.

The four magicked friends met just outside the school entrance. Although they were saying goodbye for now, it would only be a few hours before they would be meeting and going to be banshees along with the rest of the school. Contrary to Melissa's old school, it seemed that most of the kids here at Everston planned on trick-or-treating, even if it was only for the free candy and nothing else.

Melissa met Chase's violet eyes and quickly looked away as she and Quinston joined the blonde and the purple-haired girl in their usual meeting spot.

"You guys ready?!" Ivy cheered. The other three nodded.

"I-I gotta go, my b-brother i-is waiting," Chase stuttered. "He m-might j-join us later? H-he seemed interested."

Melissa's cheeks painted themselves a deeper shade of pink than they already were. I hope not. I don't know if I can handle BOTH the Walker brothers at the same time...

"We'll just wait and see then," Quinston dismissed.

The quadrio went their separate ways. Melissa went home and quickly greeted her parents before rushing up to her room and pulling out her costume- a VERY sparkly, sleeveless pop star outfit with a cute miniskirt and boots that went past her knees. There were thin frills on some of the fabric edges and, of course, everything was in different shades of blue-green teal or aqua. Some of her teachers had been cruel enough to give their students homework on this particular evening, so Melissa had to finish her math and language arts homework (at least it wasn't Latin like Chase's and Quinston's language class was.)

Soon enough Melissa's parents were driving to the local mall where the Eversingers were doing a special Halloween performance. When they got there, Kylie was dressed as a zombie, Michael was in a completely black suit with a blinding white mask, Lucas was a spider, Zana was a panda, and Connor had some sort of strange pumpkin mask on that covered half his face but it wasn't really a full costume. They sang various songs that they had memorized from horror classics like "Thriller" to a couple of soundtracks such as "I Put a Spell On You" from the movie Hocus Pocus. It was an absolute success and even more so as Melissa's parents beamed from the front of the audience.

"Bye everyone, happy Halloween!" Zana said farewell as she and Lucas took their leave. They said they had plans to be idiots and play horror games together but Kylie and Michael had a bet going that they were going to make out somewhere in the moonlight before going trick-or-treating.

"I've got to be going as well. See you guys tomorrow!" Melissa waved and hurried down the temporary steps from the pop-up stage the mall had set up for them. Her parents were waiting to remind her of all the stupid things not to do when out alone ("Don't go into stranger's houses, don't give anyone personal information, don't eat candy that doesn't have a proper wrapper, no drinking until you're twenty-one...") but thankfully not too long after the bluenette spotted bright blonde hair and she quickly said a rushed goodbye before meeting her friends.

The first thing Melissa noticed was Chase in a red costume with yellow accents and a lightning bolt on his chest.

"Seriously?" The adopted Magiclica questioned when she saw his Flash outfit.

"That's what I said!" Quinston agreed, who had walked with Chase as their houses were only a few streets apart.

"I-it was a-a dare, okay? C-Casey's a jerk..."

"And why would he have dared you to wear such an unoriginal costume?"

"Y-you'd be s-surprised."

While Chase was a Flash imposter and Melissa a store bought pop star, Quinston was in metallic-painted plastic armor with a plumed helmet and a blunt sword at his side. All he needed was a trusty horse and the dual-elementaled Magiclica would be the perfect medieval warrior.

"Aren't you the knight in shining armor, eh Quincey?" Melissa teased while using the nickname his grandparents used while she was pretending to be his girlfriend. "Where's your damsel in distress?"

The brunette gave Melissa a rather irritated look with his face tinted pink in the cold white light of the mall. "He's not here yet, and you've been hanging out with Ivy too much."

"Who said what about me?"

"Woah, Ivy!"

The purple-haired girl had an outstanding costume! Her suit matched her hair color and had lots of bumps and warts on it. On her shoulders were two heads that looked vaguely like Bow Bow's three heads but had bright purple eyes and sharp, blinding white teeth that drastically contrasted with the twilight color of the suit. There were several tentacles coming from her back and when requested Ivy turned to show that they were thick vines growing from a peach-tan painted planter on her back.

"What do you guys think? Scary?" Ivy asked and she twirled around. Her tentacles flicked, making her three friends shiver.

"T-terrifying," Chase confirmed and for once Melissa thought that the stutter might not from his speech impairment.

Ivy grinned. "Success!"

"Yours may be scary, but is it going to get you a boyfriend?" Quinston teased, striking a quick pose in his shiny suit.

"You already have a date, be quiet," Ivy immediately retorted. Chase and Melissa glanced at each other.

"We're going to waste ten minutes if we don't leave soon," Melissa whispered.

The blonde nodded. "L-leave them and l-let t-them catch up?"

"I like the way you think, Chase!"

The Flash Imposter then sped them away from their arguing friends before they could protest. It only took a minute or so for Chase to get across town and to the outskirts of the forest, where they were supposed to be meeting Kai. When Chase stopped using his powers Melissa was strangely giddy, smiling like a fool which seemed to be infectious, as the blonde had a similar, shy smirk.

"Um, did I miss a text or something? Where's Quinston?"

Their Spero acquaintance ducked from behind a couple of trees that had grown close enough to hide him. Melissa and Chase waved. The blunette and the red-and-black haired boy made eye contact for a moment before glancing away awkwardly.

"Coming. He and Ivy were taking too long so we went ahead of them."

"Oh, okay. I'm just going to hang out here, cause I was gonna scare him, alright? Don't give me away!"

Chase's eyes lit up. "Count me in!" He exclaimed and quickly looked around and speeding up a nearby tree. Melissa had NO idea how he just ran vertically but decided not to question it. Kai had a rather nervous look on his face, but his eyes seemed to almost glow happily in the cover of darkness.

"I'll just be over here, okay?" Melissa crouched behind a random trash can. It wasn't the best hiding spot but she just trying to stay out of the way of the boys rather than scare them as well. She had scared Ivy before and it did NOT work out the way she planned it.

"How dare they leave us like that?! When we find them I'm so going to-"

"Oh, be quiet Ivy. Wait, where are they...?"

"You portaled to them, right?"

"I thought I did."

Melissa snickered silently at their confusion. Quinston's spell wasn't wrong it just didn't teleport them to an exact location.

Thank goodness Mister Foley wasn't the one teleporting or this prank would have been an absolute bust.

Melissa slowly leaned out from her hiding spot and looked at her friends in the open. Ivy caught her eye and the purple-haired girl blinked.

"Mel? What are you-"

"RAAAHHHH!"

"BOO!"

Quinston screamed and ducked as the two other boys jumped him. Chase had swung upside-down from a branch in his face while Kai seemed to have leapt through his bush tackled the brunette. Ivy spun on her heel and the tentacles curled into an offensive stance while Melissa started laughing like crazy.

While Chase was now trapped by gravity hanging in midair, Kai had managed to stop himself from crushing Quinston and was now straddling him with his arm on either side of his hands and their faces incredibly close together.

Melissa let out a long "ooh~" and giggled at her (adopted brother? They had a very confusing relationship status)'s and her best-guy-friend's position.

Kai awkwardly rushed to get off Quinston, rambling an apology while the other was making light humor of it while smiling endearingly at the tan boy.

Meanwhile, Ivy was not so happy about being jumpscared.

"HOW DARE YOU! I thought you guys were my friends!"

Chase laughed. "T-There are no f-friends on Halloween."

"I thought that was in Uno or Mariokart?" Melissa questioned with just enough sarcasm it sounded literal.

Ivy glared at the blonde boy and suddenly the tree branch he was hanging from disappeared beneath him and he fell to the ground.

After casting a quick healing spell on the boys (who had all managed to get minor scratches from various causes) the five started on their route for trick-or-treating. Kai had a very simple costume: a skeleton suit and some face paint that had already been partly worn off by the time he had left the Spero hideout. Apparently some of the younger Spero members planned an annual Halloween party but was pretty lame and was basically just eating food and occasionally sparring with their taboo powers.

The four Magiclicas had welcomed Kai with open arms (well, mostly) to go trick-or-treating with them and together the five of them hit the houses with comical or spooky decorations outside as they slowly made their way to Everston Academy. It turns out that Kai was incredibly jumpy and was scared by several pop-up lawn decorations or small tricks in the candy bowl that got a good laugh out of everyone, including the not-Spero himself once he was over his initial fright. The groups played more than a few tricks on one another- Melissa experimenting with her powers to replicate people's voices and freaking the others out, Ivy turning invisible with that spell and lightly tapping their shoulders or making them stumble, Kai and Quinston teaming to create multicolored, controlled fireballs that Melissa thought were will-o-the-wisps coming to lure them to their death.

Only she thought that, though.

After an hour and a half of making their way through haunted neighborhoods, the group finally made it to the shopping area around the Everston campus and went to a few storefronts that were giving out special treats (who knew that the diner would be giving out coupons for free meals? Melissa took note to stock up next Halloween. Kaiston just got excited over a pair of owl keychains with witches's hats from the Owl Cafe...)

Finally, they reached Everston Academy.

Like Quinston had foretold, the main pathway to the school was decorated with small booths and stalls, hosting various games, food, merchandise, and more games.

"First one to find the teacher dunk tank gets five dollars," Ivy announced, "If I find it first you all owe me!" Then she ran off with a head start.

"Excuse me?! Hold on, we did not agree to that! Ivy White!"

"Quinston—?! Hold on?!"

Kai, Melissa, and Chase were left in the dust as Quinston went to defend them all from the tax that had been placed upon them. He was shouting random things about the American Revolution and "taxation without representation" while Chase seemed to find this humorous while Melissa and Kai were confused.

"Am I supposed to know what he's talking about?" Kai asked.

"Good question," Melissa agreed. She looked around before spotting something. "Hey, you want to go bob for apples?"

Kai looked to where she was pointing. "I... I guess? Isn't that like a cliche Halloween thing to do?"

"Y-You g-get all w-wet. I'll pass, t-thanks," Chase declined in his polite-but-shy manner.

The sound-manipulation Magiclica tugged her adopted brother to the booth. They were given some instructions and on the count of three, they both dunked their heads into two separate small buckets in a futile attempt to grab an apple with their mouths.

Melissa needed air and raised her head. A few seconds later the redhead did the same, having a very disgruntled expression. His face paint, which had already been not-well applied, was melting and it appeared as if he had been covered with flour and had had a failed attempt to wash it off.

Needless to say Melissa burst out laughing.

"Your face!"

Kai's face morphed from confusion to horror. "My spooky scary skeleton is ruined! NO!"

The booth manager handed both of the siblings a towel and they (remorsefully) dried their faces and/or wiped off their makeup. The manager seemed mildly annoyed that one of his towels was ruined by the face paint and Melissa quickly guided Kai out of there before anything bad happened.

It was starting to get late. The sun had set quite a while ago and the chill of the nighttime air was starting to seep into the teenagers' bones. Quinston and Ivy had settled their conflict for the time being and were both satisfied in getting whipped cream all over the school officer's and the principal's faces. Apparently the school staff took turns being victims of the students each year and Mister Foley was entertained watching his superiors be tormented like he had been the previous year while calling out his students on trying to mess with him instead of the selected staff. Chase has gotten bored and started to eat some of his candy and was now on a sugar rush. He was zipping everywhere with his powers, normally only a few steps at a time, and he could barely he understood because he was trying to speak so fast and was still stuttering occasionally in the process.

The final straw for the group to head home was when Melissa started humming "Spooky Scary Skeletons" and amplifying it with her powers. Ivy disliked the meme and yelled at her to stop, which made the sound manipulation Magiclica only hum more intensely. Then Quinston asked her to stop, of which she did.

Then Kai decided to be funny and pulled up the actual song on his phone.

Chase found this to be the funniest thing in the world and was busting his gut over it while Ivy continued to groan and Quinston seemed to give up on his unofficial boyfriend. Kai grew an evil smirk and stopped the song, only for "The Monster Mash" to blare a few seconds later. Melissa used her powers and imagined the song slightly differently and it started playing as if it were a Nightcore version of the song.

At this point the only person not enjoying this was Ivy, and the other four were enjoying tormenting her like she did them with her teasing and sassy remarks.

The beginning of "Thriller" started playing, surprising everyone. Melissa dig through her purse and found the ringing phone (she was the only one with a carrying compartment) which so happened to be Chase's. It had the called ID which said "HOWLER FROM MOM" to which Melissa raised an eyebrow at his ringtone before handing the device to its respectful owner. Chase answered the call and listened for a few moments before giving an "okay" and hanging up.

"I-I've got to g-go home."

"Awwww bye Chase! See you tomorrow!" Ivy immediately farewelled.

"You guys have school tomorrow?" Kai asked, "Why are we still up? It's like ten PM!"

"Because we're rebellious teenagers, duh," Quinston immediately retorted.

Kai shrugged, not complaining, while the girls nodded seriously in agreement. The entire group was probably sleepdrunk and on a sugar high and ready to be going to bed.

Least to say, it was a Halloween to remember!

Please tell me someone got the various references there's like 10 scattered around XD

I feel like I should have written this more like a Magiclicas short but this is more just a bunch of corresponding scenarios tied together...

I'm posting this at 10:40 PM but it's still October 31 so IT COUNTS!

Once again, HAPPY HALLOWEEN!! Hope everyone had a blast doing whatever they were doing today!
