"Come on Finn, what's taking you so long?" Lydia whined crossing her arms over her chest as Finn pulled on his socks.
"Lydia, have patience. Not everyone can get up at seven o'clock in the morning and get dressed in five minutes." Finn stated while pulling his other sock up his foot.
"It's called determination not what you're doing, which is called procrastination." Lydia replied with a smirk on her lips and a glint in her eyes that said she knew all the answers. "Finn, I swear to god if you don't hurry up I'll make you watch American Horror Story again, and last time I did that it didn't end well."
"You said it wasn't scary," Finn replied looking up at Lydia who still stood with her arms crossed as she rolled her eyes.
"And like I said, it wasn't," Lydia retorted before Finn recoiled in mock horror.
"It so was," Finn fought back remembering all the blood that came on the screen.
"No it wasn't, you big scaredy cat," Lydia shot back with a hint of amusement laced in her voice.
"Tell that to Bloody Face," Finn exasperated remembering how terrified he was when the man with a mask of skin and teeth from his victim popped up on the screen.
"Oh that wasn't scary." Lydia scoffed making Finn roll his eyes this time then reaching for his shoes.
"Yeah sure it wasn't," Finn spoke sarcastically before continuing. "Tell that to the girl running in terror from him."
"She was just a cry baby," Lydia smiled and suddenly Finn knew she was joking now.
"Yeah most people are cry babies when it comes to their lives being in danger." Finn smirked before tying his shoes slowly just to irritate the woman in from of him.
"Could you go any slower?" Lydia asked making Finn nod.
"Actually yes I can," Finn said before making his hand go even slower than before causing the blood to boil in the petite brunette.
"Finn, I'm serious!" Lydia screeched before slapping him playfully on the back.
"Okay fine," Finn laughed before tying his shoes and grabbing his jacket. Finn liked to mess with Lydia, it was sort of like his favorite pass time.
"So I guess you don't want to watch Coven with me?" Lydia smiled as he stood and walked towards her with a frown.
"Never," he replied before walking out the front door and towards Lydia's car.
"Oh come on Finn, Coven isn't suppose to be scary at all," Lydia tried to reason with him as Finn jumped into the front seat, slamming the door in Lydia's face. Lydia ran around the car before getting in the driver's seat with a smirk still etched on her lips.
"I take that as a no," Finn turned to Lydia with a smile before replying.
"If you really want too, fine." Finn said making Lydia smile and start the car.
Finn didn't find the horror television show to be that scary in all honesty. He just didn't really care for the tv show, unlike Lydia who was obsessed. Finn just didn't have the heart to tell Lydia that.
"Where are you taking me anyway?" He asked remembering the fact that Lydia had not once mentioned where they were going.
"You'll see," Lydia smirked turning to Finn before looking back at the road.
"Oh come on Lydia, you do this every god damn time." He groaned before rolling his eyes as Lydia shook her head.
"Because it's fun this way," she spoke with a grin. Finn narrowed his eyes at her before turning towards the car window and staring out as the car drove pass.
"Finn? Do you wanna play a game?" Lydia asked tilting her head towards Finn with a goofy looking grin.
"Yes, I want to play the game where you tell me where we're going." Finn replied, his facial expression blank.
"We'll be there any second, there's no point in me telling you now." Lydia fired back as she flattened her lips together into a thin line.
"If we'll be there any second then why do we have time to play a game?" Finn asked catching Lydia at her mistake.
"Well, we're here anyway so it doesn't matter now," Lydia pouted as she parked the car and quickly got out. Finn followed behind her before he glanced up and realized where they were.
"You took me to a dog shelter," Finn asked slightly confused as he turned to Lydia.
"Well I took you to pet the puppies, but now I'm starting to think I should've taken you to pet the alligators." Lydia snapped with her arms crossed.
"I don't think they have something like that for alligators," Finn thought about his reply and couldn't think of any alligator shelters in the area.
"Whatever Finn," Lydia rolled her eyes trying not to crack a smile before she pulled open the door and beckoned Finn inside.
"Ladies first," she smiled sweetly making Finn grunt in response.
"Very funny," he forced a smile before walking inside. "I don't know about you but I'm proud to be a woman." Finn joked towards Lydia trying so hard to make her laugh.
"Shut up Finn," Lydia laughed before nudging him on the shoulder.
"Hey Lyds!" Finn looked up to see a blonde boy standing behind the counter of the shelter with a red employee shirt. He wore glasses and had freckles covering his face and something told Finn that he was young mostly due to his height.
"Nice to see you're still here Michael." Lydia smiled down at the boy as she walked closer to the counter.
"Yep, Jane said that once I turn sixteen I'll get a real job, but for now volunteering still looks good on college applications." Michael smiled widely making Lydia smile back.
"Well keep up the good work and you'll be the boss in no time." Lydia grinned causing a tint of red to rise on Michael's cheeks.
"Who's this?" Micael asked with a small smile before turning to Finn obviously trying to change the subject.
"This is Finn," Lydia smile stepping away from Finn to let Michael see his face.
"Nice to meet you Finn," Michael smiled reaching his hand over the counter with a struggling breath to shake Finn's hand.
"Nice to meet you too Michael," Finn reached out to grab Michael's hand to shake it.
"So Lydia, why are you here today? I thought you're off on Sunday's." Michael asked genuinely curious as he stood back up from leaning on the counter.
Michael was a young boy with braces on his teeth as well as a heart of gold and Lydia thought of him as a second brother.
"I'm here to show Finn the new puppies that Misty gave birth to about a month ago." Lydia smiled as Finn's eyes widened in shock.
"You are?" Finn asked not sure he wanted to hold a dog.
"Yes I am, and you are going to have fun so don't be grumpy." Lydia snapped before turning back to Michael with a smile.
"Oh okay, they just took the puppies to the back so make sure to wash you're hands before you pet them." Michael smiled obviously proud that he knew what he was doing.
"Thank you Michael," Lydia smiled before taking Finn's hand and leading him towards a door in the back.
"But Lydia you know I don't care for puppies. That's more of your thing." Finn spoke as Lydia led him through the door with a scoff.
"Who doesn't like puppies?" Lydia exasperated shocked that Finn would say such a thing.
"Me. I don't really care." Finn said making Lydia narrow her eyes before leading Finn to a sink.
"Wash you're hands and then meet me in that room over there." Lydia ignored Finn's sighs before pointing to a open doorway with a light shining through, small whines and barks erupting from behind the door.
"Okay," Finn faked a smile causing Lydia to stick her tongue out before skipping into the room.
Finn stood with his hands under the water as he scanned his surroundings. The room he stood in looked more like a large hallway. It was wide with doors on every wall. Each door was painted a different color giving the whole place a childlike vibe. But then again it was a shelter for dogs where children volunteer and pet dogs, but it made Finn think of his childhood and his time with his sister.
Amber had always had an obsession with puppies. Finn remembered when Amber brought home a stray dog and begged their mother to keep it. Finn remembered the dog became the family pet in a matter of weeks, but they all knew the dog was really Amber's and that it would always be by her side.
But like all living things the dog grew old fast and soon Finn didn't see the dog wagging his tail and running around the house anymore. Amber became sad, but Finn didn't realize how sad Amber really was. That dog was the spark of Amber's depression.
Because when Finn thought about it, when he really thought about it. He couldn't remember her smile ever appearing after the day that dog died. And he regretted being so oblivious to Amber's sadness because maybe he could've helped her.
He wished he could've help her.
The sensation of heat surging through Finn's veins made him come out of his daze and hiss in pain. The water was steaming causing Finn to quickly turn it off.
Lydia stuck her head from behind the room with a small smirk, "Are you coming or what?"
"Yeah," Finn forced a smile before walking into the small room.
The room smelt like mud and grass as the air blew into the room from an open window on the back wall. But what really caught Finn's eyes was the sight of three little golden puppies running around and whining in a small pin.
The pin sat in the middle of the room and as Finn moved closer his heart rate started to race. Because in that moment that he saw those small dogs he realized how much he missed that small fur ball that was like his sister's child.
"You want to hold one?" Lydia asked. Finn stilled, staring with his mouth open in awe as he nodded slowly.
Lydia slowly bent down and grabbed one of the puppies before kissing it on the forehead and slowly holding it out for Finn.
Finn's heart rate was beating faster than he ever thought it would just by holding a small puppy, but for some reason he was terrified.
Finn slowly grabbed the small dog from Lydia's arms before pulling it tighter into his chest. The dog was tired as it's eyes drooped sleepily.
"Is it a girl or boy?" Finn suddenly found himself smiling at the small animal.
"Boy," Lydia replied staring at Finn's smile with a grin on her face.
Finn stared at the puppy as he slowly swiped his hand across his fur and petted him ever so gently.
"I think he likes you." Lydia spoke as the puppy looked up at Finn with his tail wagging through Finn's arms.
"He's so cute," Finn grinned, and for some reason he felt like a small child. He felt like nothing was wrong with the world and that he could stay like this forever.
The dog panted in Finn's arms as he tilted his nose towards Finn's nose and licked it gracefully. Finn grinned so brightly it put the sun to shame and even Lydia giggled at the sight of the small dog giving her best friend kisses.
"See Finn, not all of the world is filled with darkness." Lydia smiled as Finn turned from the small dog towards Lydia.
"The world is a dark place, and I know that." Lydia sighed eyes still gazing at the puppy. "But if you dwell on the darkness, you're bound to spend you're life in the shadows when all you have to do is look a little closer to see the light that this world has to offer." Lydia averted her eyes toward Finn's with a smile.
And maybe Lydia wasn't as oblivious as Finn thought she was.
