[thirteen: part one]
♔Zac's P.O.V♔
THE LONG awaited day had finally arrived. It was six thirty in the evening when I stood in front of a full length mirror, fixing my black bow tie that looked a bit crooked.
Truth be told, I was really nervous to finally meet the mystery girl after all this time. She was an amazing girl, and I don't know what I've done to deserve such a gem in my life. She was a good fortune I did not know I needed. And today I could finally spend some time with her and relish in all the good memories we might make tonight.
After a much long struggle, my tie was properly placed underneath the collar of my shirt. I ran my hair through my hair, making sure it looked neat. I checked out my navy blue armani suit on the mirror, making sure that the material did not crease or I would have to iron it again.
First impressions are the last impressions, so I had to look good for her. After much stressing, I took the bouquet of roses that lay on my bed. These red roses would be perfect for her.
I made my way out of my room, but walked further down the hallway to a familiar room I knew too well.
The door was standing ajar, so I peaked through to see mom sitting there, in that same position like she always has. I entered the room and gently placed the bouquet onto her bed before heading over to her rocking chair.
I pulled a chair from the corner and placed it beside her to take a seat.
"Hey, mom," I whispered, but silence was always my answer.
"It's finally big day. Today is the day I would meet my special friend. The one I told you about." I said.
I took her hand in mine and gave it a gentle kiss. "I just wanted to say goodbye before I leave."
There was no answer, but only a slight squeeze from her hand in mine. Although this seemed like nothing, it meant something to me. This small gesture awakened some hope in me that my mom was still in there. She could hear me; she still loved me.
I could feel the tears brimming, threatening to make their way down my flesh, but I quickly blinked them away. Today was a happy day, and I wouldn't let anything ruin it. Giving a gentle kiss to her cheek, I made my way out the room, with the roses in hand.
With my car keys in hand, I made my way out and opened up the car, jumping in. I wish the mystery girl told me her address, I would have loved seeing her here with me in my car. The both of us driving to the party together. But alas, it had to be this way.
I grab the bouquet and head out of the house. I enter my car and drive to the school. The drive was shorter than I had anticipated, so within ten minutes, I reached the mansion and placed my car in the parking lot.
I step out of the car, and spot Jimmy and Roger a few blocks away from me. They soon spot me as well, as they make their way over. Jimmy had a pretty blond beside him as his date whilst Roger had Monica's fingers intertwined in his.
"Dudes," I say in a form of a greeting as we gave each other some manly hugs. I could feel Monica's eyes on me when I pulled away from Roger. But I did not care. I was not here to entertain her.
"For a minute we thought you weren't coming." Roger said as he hooked an arm around Monica's waist and pulled her closer to his side. I don't know whether he was trying to make me jealous, but it sure wasn't working.
"I'm here now, aren't I?" I told them as I checked my wristwatch for the time. I wonder when she'll be here.
"Looks like your date's fashionably late," Monica said all of a sudden, making me snap my eyes at her. She had to ruin the moment.
"Monica..." Roger warned, but she seemed to be in the mood for more trouble as a sly smirk made their way on her lips.
"We're meeting at the party." I say still glaring at her. The woman brought out the worst in me.
"I hope she makes it. It would be horrible if your date decides to ditch you."
Something inside of me snaps and I see red. I'm about to take a step towards her when Jimmy steps in between us, putting his hand on my arm.
"Dude, chill out. Don't mind her, she's not worth it," he whispered, so that only I heard it.
With that, I release myself from Jimmy's grip and walk away, deciding to take a walk in the parking lot. Anything that would distance me away from Monica is best for me.
I continue walking, hoping to spot her driving into the parking. To my surprise a vehicle drives into the parking lot. It stops a few distances away from me. I watch from afar as someone steps out.
As the person steps out, my eyes widen and I stop breathing for a moment. This might sound cheesy, but this is truly how I felt.
Under the dark, starry night, stood an angel. She was dressed in a white linen, strapless dress that hugged her waist and fell to the ground like a waterfall. Her hair, beautiful locks of brown, lay curled on her back. Her mask only hid most features of her face, except her brown innocent eyes that shone under the glistening light of the moon.
She was more than beautiful. She was breathtaking.
I found myself walking towards the stranger; my legs doing their own bidding. After talking to the driver, he set off and she stood in the parking lot as if looking for someone. Could she truly be the one?
I stopped a few feet away from her. I could smell her lingering vanilla scent with a hint of lavender in the air engulfing me.
"Looks like we arrived at the same time, stranger." I said all of a sudden, having no control over my words.
She jumped in fright and turned around to look at me, eyes wide, chest moving up and down rapidly. Shoot. I wish I hadn't scared her.
"I'm sorry I scared you. I really didn't mean to," I said quickly, only making her chuckle at me. Oh good, I'm acting like a fool.
"It's okay..."
"Zac. It's a pleasure to finally meet you." I gently took her hand and placed a quick kiss on it. Her hands were so soft and fragile.
"Nice to meet you, Zac. I'm Lindsey," she said and looked at the ground as if she were blushing.
"You look beautiful. Like an angel. Oh, and these are for you." I told her, and handed her the roses. She murmured a low thanks.
"So, shall we head inside? I wouldn't want a beautiful lady like you to freeze out here in the cold." The fuck were you saying, man? I hooked out my arm for her.
"Sure," she placed her hand on my arm as we made our way inside.
The music could be heard from the time we reached the entrance. It was loud enough to crack a few windows.
"Woah, this kid's parents are loaded," she said, making me chuckle like a fool. I was surely embarassing myself.
"Yeah, sure is. Would you like a drink?" I proposed and she agreed. We made our way to the bar. Could you imagine? There was a bar in this place.
We quickly ordered our drinks and took our seats, making small talk once in a while. Spending time with her was truly mesmerizing. It all felt like a dream. If it was, I never want to wake up.
"Hey, you alright?" She asked, snapping me back into reality. I got lost in her eyes that I zoned out.
"Yeah. Just got a bit distracted. You have really beautiful eyes," I blurted out. C'mon Zac. Keep it together.
"Oh, these old things. They're normal, there's nothing special about them. But thanks so much, Zac." She smiled at me, pulling more at my heartstrings.
"By the way, I don't mean to be nosy, but why aren't you wearing you mask? I thought this was a masquerade party?"
"Well, I thought it would be a great idea for you to see my face first. I didn't want to hide my true self from you. I wanted you to see me for me."
"Oh," she answered, her smile wavering a bit. I wonder what I did wrong to upset her.
"Hey, are you----" before I could ask her what the matter was, the loud music stopped and a slower and much softer tune replaced it instead.
"May I have this dance?" I hope she agreed. This was my plan to distract her from the problem I somehow created.
"I'd really like that, but I don't know how to dance." She confessed shyly, playing with the tips of her curled hair.
"I'll teach you." I gently take her hand in mine and lead her to the dance floor.
We reach the dance floor and turn so that we are facing each other. To my surprise, she steps forwards and places both her hands gently around my neck.
"Someone doesn't know how to dance, hey?" I teased, making her roll her eyes at me, trying to cover up the smile that tugged on her lips.
"I wasn't lying. I've got two left feet to be honest."
I began to sway to the slow music and she follows suit. I pull her a bit closer that my face is closer to her hair. For a moment, I take in the glorious scent of vanilla and lavender.
"You're a fast learner." I whispered into her ear, making her shiver slightly.
"And you're a great teacher. Zac, thanks for everything." She lay her head on my chest as she spoke in a hushed tone. The words shared between us only for our ears and no one else's.
"What for?" I say a bit breathless, affected by her nearness.
"For being there for me every step of the way. We hardly knew each other, but you managed to understand me and help me out with my problems. You were my saviour when no one was around to listen. I really owe you."
"You've already paid me." I whispered, my chin rested on the top of her head.
"How so?" She asked, a bit confused.
"For agreeing to be my date. For this dance. Ever since we'd started writing to each other, I've felt peace and happiness. Something I haven't experienced in a long time. Thanks for being my ray of sunshine, Lindsey."
"Zac-" she is cut off when someone stops by me.
"Aren't you Zac from the PVBs?" A guy asked. As if on instinct, I pull Lindsey closer to me.
"Yeah, who's asking?"
"Nice to meet ya, dude. I'm Max and thanks for coming to the party. We thought you could play something for everyone. Your band's already assembled on stage. They'd like you to join 'em."
"Cool. I'm on my way." I just wanted the guy to leave. He reeked of alcohol and I could sense that Lindsey felt uncomfortable around him.
He leaves and I look down at Lindsey and she looks back up at me.
"I've got to go, but I don't want to leave you here by yourself," I whispered, as our foreheads touched.
"Don't worry, I'll be alright. Besides, I've always wanted to see you play."
Her saying that made my heart beat faster. She had such an effect on me.
"Well, looks like today is your lucky day. Wish me luck," I gently kissed her forehead, clearly catching her off guard.
Letting go off her was hard, but I did it anyway. I reached the stage that was set up in what looked like a living room. All the equipment were set up.
Roger took the drums whilst Jimmy took the guitar.
I took my place in the all too bright limelight that shone over me. With cool hands, I gripped the microphone and brought it closer to my lips.
"We are the PVBs," I said through the microphone, making everyone cheer.
"Today's song goes out to a special person and close to me. Someone I've come to know of in a matter of weeks. Someone dear to my heart. This is for her."
My eyes find Lindsey's in the crowd. We share a moment between us. It felt like we were the only two people in this room. I was not singing for everyone else. I was only singing for her tonight.
I took a deep breath and prepared to sing my heart out.
