The Date

Hana arrives at the telephone area and Bun Ok holds out the telephone for her. Just as she is about to reject the call, Ms. Pi suddenly shows up and takes the phone, putting it in Hana's hand.

"Talk to your mother." Ms. Pi says in a stern tone.

"I don't want to." Hana says, looking away with a frown.

"I've been informed by your mother that you've been refusing her calls for weeks now. She's very upset about it. Now answer it."

Hana sighs, taking the phone and putting it to her ear. "Eomma."

"You actually answered this time. Come see your father and I this weekend."

Bun Ok who is trying not to be obvious ends up receiving a look from Ms.Pi to stop being so nosy and immediately looks away.

"Sorry but I'm going on a date this Saturday. I have to go..." Just as she is about to end the call, she ends up receiving a glare from Ms. Pi. "Umm... Maybe this Sunday?" She squeaks, swallowing the lump in her throat.

"Wait a date? Who are you going on a date with?!"

"Gotta go! See you this Sunday!"

Hana quickly gives the phone back to Bun Ok and takes her leave. Unknown to her, Ms. Pi takes back the phone from Bun Ok.

"Will you be fine by yourself tomorrow?" Hye Ryung asks while fixing Hana's makeup.

"Really don't have a choice. I also have a feeling that Ms. Pi will make sure I get in the car that my parents will send." Hana answers with a tone of disappointment.

"Still can't believe that our director actually forced you to talk to that old wen- I mean your mom." Hye Rung mutters.

"...I don't wanna go! I'm already always being forced to drink white milk once a month and go on dates set up by you!" Hana whines until Hye Ryung begins glaring at her. "I'll shut up."

"Unnie, it's ten to three." Young Ro informs Hye Ryung coming over to them.

"I know."

"Bun Ok said she'd be at Rome Coffee Shop by three."

"She must have stopped by some salon, right? It's just putting pearls on a pi- Ow! Hana, don't pinch me!"

"You're being a meanie!"

Hye Ryung rolls her eyes and finishes up Hana's makeup. "There all done."

"Hanny, you look so pretty!" Seol Hui compliments her.

"You're way more prettier than me!" Hana giggles.

"No, you're more prettier!" Seol Hui also giggles.

"They told us be there by three without asking us." Hye Ryung says while putting on her earrings. "So why do we have to be there by the time they set?"

"You shouldn't be going at all. You're an engaged woman." Hana says with a pout.

"I'm only going to find you a boyfriend. Hopefully he could also be your future husband."

"Hye Ryung!" Hana whines, stomping her foot.

"Romantic relationships begin with a tug-of-war. And the best way to win is to make the guy desperate. Got it?" Hye Ryung explains with a smirk.

Young Ro and Seol Hui nod as Hana shakes her head.

"...I don't wanna play hard to get."

Hye Ryung closes her eyes and begins rubbing her forehead.

The girls arrive at the coffee shop and approach a table where five guys are sitting. One of them is building matchstick tower is the one who catches Hana's attention.

"Oh Gwang Tae?" Hye Ryung asks matchstick guy who looks up at her.

"No, I'm-" He attempts to introduce himself but Gwang Tae cuts him off.

"Hye Ryung!"

As Gwang Tae stands up, he ends up shaking the table and the matchstick tower ends up falling apart. The guy making it and Hana try to save it, but they end up holding each other hands... When he looks at her, his eyes widened.

"Darn!" She pouts. "It was almost-"

"Perfect." He finishes.

Hearing his voice, she looks him and gasps. Young Ro and Seol Hui smile at the two's interaction before looking at a smirking Hye Ryung. After staring at each other a while longer, she begins to blush.

"Oh, I'm sorry!" She apologizes and immediately removes her hands from his.

"No, it's fine." He says, hiding his disappointment.

"...Only four of you came?" Gwang Tae asks.

"Four? Ah... She's not here yet?" Hye Ryung asks, looking at Young Ro.

"She definitely promised to be here by three." Young Ro answers.

"I'm sorry. I guess something urgent came up for her. One of you will have to do without a partner." Hye Ryung tells them.

"Young Ro!"

The girls look to see Bun Ok standing at the entrance, wearing a white dress with big red polka dots, black heels, and a red beret. She even holds the Romeo and Juliet copy that Young Ro got for her.

"Unnie!" Young Ro says, surprised by her appearance.

"You look pretty, unnie!"

"I'm sorry I'm late. Thank you, Hana." Bun Ok says before giving Hana a hug and looking at the guys. "Hi! I'm so sorry I'm late. Sorry guys. Did you introduce yourselves yet?"

"We didn't-" Bun Ok pushes Hye Ryung out of the way and sits in front of matchstick guy. Gwang Tae prevents Hye Ryung from falling back.

"Hi! I'm a senior studying English literature at Hosu University. My name is... Gye Seong." Bun Ok says smiling at the guys before the girls.

Hye Ryung rolls her eyes and notices matchstick guy staring at Hana again, making her smirk once again and begins plotting in her head. A moment later, the girls have taken their seats in front of the guys.

"All right. Now that all of us are here, please introduce yourselves."

Before Hye Ryung, Bun Ok interrupts her. "Wait. How about we decide our partners first? You see I have two tickets to a music concert." She says holding up her book with the tickets sticking out of it. "If I'm to be there on time, I should get going soon. And I was hoping to go there with one of the guys here."

Hye Ryung, Young Ro and Seol Hui notice her eyeing the guy interested in Hana. Young Ro look and Seol Hui look at each other worriedly as Hye Ryung glares at the older girl.

"Cutting to the chase. I love it. Alright, how about you girls pick among our items?" Gwang Tae suggests.

"No. Since she's in a hurry, we girls will take out items. So that a guy who wants to go with her can pick hers." Hye Ryung says, smiling at the boys.

"Let's do that! I agree with...Hye Ryung unnie!" Seol Hui shouts before lowering her voice.

"Come on, Seol Hui. Isn't that too boring and direct? I'd rather leave it to fate, right?" Bun Ok suggests.

"I agree with you! What's so fun about it if it's obvious?" Gwang Tae asks not noticing Hye Ryung's glare.

"But-"

"Unnie. Maybe we should let fate decide for us." Young Ro says to Hye Ryung before silently mouthing, "We'll help Hana if Bun Ok unnie tries to ruin things."

Hye Ryung hesitates before nodding. "Fine."

"Let's let fate decide for us. All right, then. Could you girls please close your eyes?" The girls do what Gwang Tae asks. "And guys?"

"Yes?"

"Take out your items."

The guys put their items on the table and Gwang Tae asks the girls to open their eyes. A lighter, a pen, a pocket watch, an exam pass certificate and the one thing that catches all the girls' attention is the paper airplane, knowing how much the twins love them. Young Ro can tell that the paper airplane is his due to him glancing at it. Seol Hui nudges Hye Ryung to be prepared. Bun Ok is about to grab it and before the other girls can stop her...

"Hye Ryung! Why don't you go first?" Gwang Tae requests.

After looking through them, she picks up the certificate. "Oh my! What is this exam certificate for?"

"It's for the civil service exam." Gwang Tae says making his friends laugh and they give him a thumbs up.

"The first round?" She asks while folding it.

"Yes, the first round." He answers.

"Seol Hui."

"Uh... I think Hana should go next!" Seol Hui suggests making Hye Ryung and Young Ro grin.

"Huh?" Hana asks with eyes widened. "Why me? You're older than me."

"Listen to your unnie and go next!"

"Okay, okay, okay! Take and a butterscotch and calm down." Hana says, giving her the candy and making everyone except Bun Ok laugh.

She looks through the items and her eyes set on the paper airplane, making the owner feel at ease.

"Come on, Hana. Since I'm older, I should-" Bun Ok says and is about to make an attempt to get the paper airplane.

"Unnie, Seol Hui asked Hana to go next." Young Ro says, stopping her.

"And I think that this..." Hye Ryung picks up the paper plane placing it in Hana's hands "should go to Hana."

Bun Ok awkwardly laughs. "What happened to letting fate decide?"

"A paper airplane which happens to be one of her favorite things appeared in front of her. So, fate did decide." Hye Ryung answers with a smug look.

Hana looks up from the paper airplane and looks at the smiling matchstick guy. The girls notice this and smile in victory while Bun Ok glares at them. Before he can introduce himself, a couple nearby them starts arguing.

"How dare you do this to your own boyfriend! My goodness! Fine. I get that you're smart. But how dare you embarrass me in front of my family who is brilliant and levelheaded!" The man screams.

"Hey, it's Hyejin!"

"Do you know her, Hanny?" Seol Hui asks.

"Yep. She's a family friend. She babysat me when I was younger and has always been like an older sister to me." Hana answers.

Hyejin lightly chuckles before taking her drink and throwing it into her boyfriend's face, making everyone gasp.

"Go back to your hussy, you prick."

"...Did she just say hussy?" Hana asks while watching the scene with narrowed eyes. "Gye Seong? Can I borrow your spoon?"

Hyejin slaps him making their audience gasp once more.

"Honey!"

"And you know-"

She is interrupted as a spoon is suddenly thrown at his head.

"Ow! What the?! Who the he-" He looks around and is shocked seeing an angry Hana. "Hana?!"

"Sue me if you want but I told you not to cheat on my unnie, you butthead!" She yells, pointing at him.

"Oh my god..." Hye Ryung mumbles, covering her mouth.

All the guys at their table eyes widened at Hana's behavior. The girls except Bun Ok almost laugh.

"Thank you, my sweet dongsaeng." Hyejin sends a smile Hana's way before looking back to her soon to be ex-boyfriend. "Now what was I about to do? Oh, I remember..."

She takes her purse and starts beating him up with it.

"You're going to lose your position soon as well! And don't you dare even think about suing my precious Hana!"

Hana who is on her knees in the seat and starts cheering on Hyejin. "Yes, unnie! Beat that butthead up! Yeah! Beat him-"

Seol Hui quickly covers Hana's mouth as Young Ro goes to grab her, making her lean back into her.

"You're unbelievable!" Hye Ryung says trying not to laugh and tickles Hana's stomach. "I can't take you anywhere."

Hana laughs despite her mouth still being covered by Seol Hui who also laughs.

"You're such a handful, Hanny." Young Ro says while laughing.

Hana removes Seol Hui's hand from her mouth and faces Young Ro to say, "You're one to talk Miss Wall Climber."

"What? You..." Young Ro begins tickling Hana who tickles her back causing laughter between the twins.

As the men join in on the laughter, Hye Ryung notice Hana's date chuckling at her behavior and looks back Hana with a smile.

He better make her happy

"Stop tickling me!"

"You stop first! You started it!"

"You better not do anything you shouldn't be doing with him. You're still an engaged woman." Hana says with a stern look that only looks adorable to Hye Ryung.

"Yeah, yeah. And you better hang onto him." Hye Ryung says while fixing Hana's hair.

Hana blinks multiple times before asking, "What about playing hard to get?"

"Yah! Forget that! It's not like you were going to do it anyway."

"But what if I want to go out with multiple guys like how you used to?"

"I forbid you to become like me!" Hye Ryung then notices Hana's partner coming towards them. "Hey, what's your name?"

"Lim Soo-ho."

"Soo-ho? I'm entrusting her to you and make sure she doesn't eat a lot of butterscotch candy." Hye Ryung demands in a stern tone, making him give her a nervous look.

"Excuse her, she's one of those mom friends if you know mean." Hana explains ignoring Hye Ryung's glare. "Don't you have somewhere to be?"

"Trying to get rid of me now, huh? You didn't even want to come on the date in the first place... Get to know your possible future husband." Hye Ryung whispers and smirks when Hana blushes. She lightly pinches Hana's cheek before going to join her partner.

"Hello! My name is Nam Hana, nice to meet you!" Hana giggles and the sound of her laughter widens Soo-ho's smile.

"It's nice to meet you as well."

"Umm, before we make any decisions on where to go could we stop by the bookstore first?"

After finding a book for Jeongmin, Hana heads to the back of Evergreen Bookstore where the radio is. She puts on headphones and picks a cassette tape named "One Way Ticket" to play in the radio. She begins thinking about the blind date and giggles about her moment with Soo-ho. Unaware to her, he watches her from the front of the store with a smile on his face. After finishing up, she takes out the tape and goes to join him.

"One Way Ticket." He says, noticing the tape in her hands.

"Yep." She nods. "Is that sheet music? Are you a musician? I'll buy it for you!"

"No, that's not necess-"

"How about this? You let me buy that for you and you can decide what we do?"

He ponders for a moment before giving her an answer. "...Alright... Movie and dinner. And I'll be paying."

She squeals and takes the sheet music from him and heads over to the cashier. "Deal!"

While paying for the things, she doesn't notice him smiling at her. After leaving the store, his eyes widened when he sees the police coming their way.

"Hey. You there!" One of the officers says, approaching them.

"Is something- Oh!" He grabs her hand, causing butterflies in both their stomachs and they cross the road, stopping in an alleyway. "Huh? What's going on?"

He suddenly grabs onto her shoulders. "It wasn't like that."

"What? What are you doing?" She asks, surprised by his actions.

"Just a minute please."

That's when she notices the police behind them. One of them goes through papers attached to a clipboard and she suddenly sheds a tear, surprising Soo-ho.

"You jerk." She sniffles. "How could you think about going to that concert with Gye Seong? I thought we had something special but I guess I was wrong."

He takes a step closer to her and pulls her into a hug, gently patting her back to calm down her crying and she slowly returns the hug. He hears the police leaving and despite wanting to continue the hug, he pulls away.

"Are you alright?" She nods and he gives her a tissue from his coat pocket.. "You could be an actress."

"That's so sweet of you to say! I am an acting major!" She giggles while wiping away her tears. "So movie and dinner?"

He nods and the two walk side by side with a smile.

"Ah, by the way... Your name means protecting my love, right? I like it."

He nods. "Your name means the one, correct? It's really pretty."

His compliment makes her blush. "...Oh, want a butterscotch?"

The moment that I laid eyes on you

Our hands touched and our eyes locked, I just had to know you

I knew it was selfish, but I just couldn't help myself

You had my heart before I could say no

Plot twist! Weren't expecting that were you?

I didn't talk about this last chapter, and I forgot to! Since these episodes are very long, I will be splitting them up. That way you all won't have to wait too long for one chapter!

So, I decided to have the main couple start dating before everything goes down. And I know Soo-ho was more focused on his mission. But I really wanted to go this route. Why? I wanted a bit more romance in the beginning of the show and to see what it would have been like had Soo-ho been a little more distracted. I felt that would have made their relationship a bit more tragic than it was... But my favorite part to write was her besties playing matchmakers! So how do you feel about all the changes that I made? How did I do?

Also, I wanted to include the snowdrop snow globe in this because it wasn't included in the show.

How ya'll feel about the couple fight scene? I don't know if any of ya'll got it, but it was kinda inspired by a certain court room fight scene in Vincenzo! Plus I just wanted to write in an adorable yet feisty Hana! There should be another scene or two like that later! And Hyejin is just a minor character, she won't be playing a big role.

How do you all feel about Hana and her friendships so far? Do you improve of how I'm handling Hye Ryung's character?
