A Heartbreaking Truth

In the lounge room, Hana and Soo-ho sit across from Seung Hee and Kang Moo at the table.

"...Eomma, you could have taken me back then. When I got left behind by my classmates and teacher."

"You remember that?" Seung Hee says with a surprised look on her face and Hana nods.

"I know I was still young then but after looking at that picture a few more times, I recognized you..." Hana replies with a sad smile.

"I was tempted to back then, believe me. I wanted to take back my daughter who was taken from me and run away to somewhere they could never find us but..." Seung Hee sighs. "I was afraid... What if my efforts been in vain and they find us?"

"Should we really be here for this?" Kang Moo asks. "You two have been reunited as mother and daughter so shouldn't this be more a private moment between you both?"

"You two also need to know what you're really dealing with when it comes to the ANSP." Seung Hee says before looking at her daughter. "Where's Young Ro?"

"She looked really tired, so I told her to get some rest and I would tell her what we talk about later." Hana answers and Seung Hee nods.

Hana takes out the bracelet and necklace, placing them on the table in front of her mother who's eyes widened.

"Soo-ho and Gyeok-chan were part of the North Koreans that appa saved." Hana informs her.

"I had the bracelet. Comrade Joo had the necklace." Soo-ho adds. "Your husband dropped the bracelet, and it was already too late to return it."

"...So, it's not a coincidence that we were all brought together like this." Seung Hee sighs and reaches under her collar to reveal the white necklace.

(The black one belongs to IS and the white one belongs to SH)

"You and appa had matching necklaces."

"We did." Seung Hee says with a sad smile, taking Il-sung's necklace back. "Your father had this bracelet made for you. It belongs to you."

Hana gives her mother a sad smile before taking the bracelet back.

"I'm sorry. Because of us-"

"Don't. My husband made his choice and he told me that he didn't regret it... Thank you for being alive." Seung Hee tells Soo-ho, surprising him. "It means that his sacrifice didn't go to waste."

"When you all talking about the North Koreans that your husband saved...?"

"The assassination attempt on the president back nineteen years ago. My husband saved the families of those very assassins." Seung Hee explains, shocking Kang Moo. "He felt it wasn't right to kill them when they had nothing to do with it."

"He saved many lives, including us who were still children at the time... Nam Il-sung who was the secretary's general younger brother." Soo-ho adds.

"What?! Nam Tae-il had a brother?!"

"Half-brother. Il-sung was Nam Tae-il's younger half-brother." Seung Hee corrects him, shocking all of them.

Tae-il stands outside Il-sung's shrine with a somber expression.

Flashback

"Why are we here, abeoji?" A twelve-year-old Tae-il asks walking alongside his father as they stand in front of a shrine.

"There's someone that we need to pick up. He will be part of our family from now on, so make sure to welcome him, son." His father answers before they both go inside.

Tae-il father's nods at a man who is comforting a sad young boy. Tae-il notices a picture of a beautiful woman and it seems to be her mourning service.

"Was she a friend of yours, abeoji?"

"Tae-il... She is someone I should have never gotten involved with. I didn't love her but had I known about that child, she wouldn't had to go through so many hardships. She chose to endure everything all on her own... Now that she's gone, he needs someone to care for him. So we're bringing him home with us. That boy over there is your younger brother... Nam Il-sung." The father explains, shocking his eldest son.

Tae-il looks back at Il-sung who is staring at the two, his eyes puffy and face tear-stained.

End of Flashback

"...You were right... I am regretting everything." Tae-il speaks, voice full of sadness.

1968

As Il-sung arrives home, he stops at the front door once he realizes that he didn't get his necklace back from Gyeok-chan. He also feels his pockets for Hana's bracelet but comes up with nothing.

"Damn it..." He whispers and sighs. "I'll have to get another one made when I have the time... I'll worry about it later. For now..."

He takes a deep breath and opens the door with a nervous smile.

"I'm home, my beautiful fam- Ow! As soon as I walk in the house and the first thing you do is pinch me!" He whines, rubbing his arm.

"Why are you so late?! You were supposed to be back an hour ago! She's been pouting the whole time!" Seung Hee complains, glaring at her husband.

"I'm sorry! Something happened and I'll explain everything. For now, let's just have a sweet family mom- Ow!" He rubs his arm again and sighs. "I still don't know it I should feel honored or offended that I'm the only man that you pinch and call a bonehead."

"And I don't know if I should feel honored or offended that I fell for you out of all people." She snaps making him gasp.

Hana giggles at her parents' bickering.

"How can you say that in front of our child?! Give her to me!" He quickly takes their daughter from his wife. "My little butterscotch, you're the only one who understands me. I think your mom is super grumpy today because she missed me so much just like you did. You missed me, didn't you? Yes, you did! My cute little Hana!"

He kisses Hana's cheek making her giggle more. Seung Hee rolls her eyes and puts her hands on her hips.

"I swear she prefers you over me." She grumbles and begins pouting. "She pouts the whole time you're gone. She calms down when you hold her. And she gets so happy when you show her butterscotch candy. She's never been a handful for you. She must only love you."

"What are you talking about, my love? Of course she-"

"Mama!"

"See? She loves you- Wait..." His eyes widened as he looks at his daughter. "You just said your first word..." He then looks back at his wife. "She said her first word!"

He lifts their daughter up into the air as he cheers making her squeal and clap.

"Wait..." He brings their daughter back down and gives her a raised eyebrow. "Why was mama your first word and not dada? I thought I was your favorite?!"

"Well, you were wrong! Give her to me!" Seung Hee laughs and quickly takes their daughter back.

"Mama!" Hana giggles again.

"Yes sweetheart! It's mama! I'm sorry for not realizing sooner that I'm your favorite." Seung Hee says with a sweet smile as Il-sung's jaw drops.

"What is happening? Is my daughter turning against me? What did I do wrong?" He mumbles.

"My adorable girl." Seung Hee coos earning a big smile in return. She then looks at her husband with a raised eyebrow. "Now are you going to explain why it took you so long to get back?"

"Uh... Well..." He thinks about the North Koreans he saved earlier before clearing his throat. "Just to remind you that you're holding our child so don't get mad."

Five minutes later...

"So that's what had happened. Everyone is safe and-" Hana giggles again as she is passed over to her father then Seung Hee walks away. "My love, what are you going? Please don't be- Wait. That's my secret stash! How did you find it?! Wh-What.. What are you doing with that lighter?"

None of them knew that this would be one of their last peaceful moments because of what happens a few days later...

Il-sung wakes up and feels a sticky note on his forehead. He smiles and takes it off to see what's written on it.

Breakfast already made for you, bonehead. And Hana is still sleeping so make sure to feed her.

"She's still mad at me." He chuckles, getting up out of bed to get ready for the day.

After getting dressed, he heads to Hana's room and looks in her crib to see her already awake.

"Good morning, my little butterscotch." He says, leaning over the crib with a smile.

"Dada!" She grins, raising her arms up as she opens and closes her fist, wanting to be picked up.

His eyes widened and he punches the air as victory. "Yes, she said her second word!"

"Dada!"

"Yes, Hana! It's your dada!" He says he picks her up. "Can't wait to see your mom's reaction to this."

She giggles as he tickles her tummy.

Later after eating, Il-sung has put Hana in her playpen while he is working on paperwork in the living room. He hears her squealing and smiles when he sees her hugging her teddy bear. He then hears knocking on the door, he goes to answer it revealing Tae-il.

"What do you want?" Il-sung asks in an annoyed tone.

"Have you lost your mind? You're the director of the ANSP and you're saving North Koreans?" Tae-il asks with anger in his voice.

Il-sung sighs and closes the door. "Now I know U-jin didn't snitch so that means one of your guys saw me...or did you have him follow me?"

"That's beside the point! Explain yourself!"

"Keep your voice down." Il-sung snaps, nodding his head in Hana's direction.

Tae-il looks over at the playpen and rolls his eyes. "You're the ANSP director! You should have arrested them! Why did you do it? Why help the communists-"

"Who I helped were human beings who didn't deserve to be punished for the crimes others did. The assassins had already been dealt with so why punish the ones who weren't involved?" Il-sung retorts.

"What if word gets out of what you've done?! You're lucky that it was only me that found out!"

"So I was suppose to just stand by and let children die?"

"They're not your children! Yours is over there!" Tae- il yells, pointing at the playpen.

"Hyung-"

"Enough. I'm giving you a chance to fix your mistake. Step down from your position from the ANSP and go back to Germany with your wife and daughter. Also leave half of your money to me." Tae-il says in a serious tone.

Il-sung scoffs. "In other words, you want to become the next ANSP director and leave you the money that not only do I use to provide for my family but to help those in need so that you might make shady deals?"

"What is with you? Ever since you became the ANSP director, you've been trying to change the system into something...good." Tae-il shudders with disgust. "You know you're unbelievable. It's hard to believe that you're my brother. You're a Nam! You should be showing off the power that you have! Showing everyone what happens to those try to defy us. We have to make sure that our family needs to stay at the top!"

"...How many innocent people got accused of being someone that they're not? Of doing something that they never did. Before I took over the ANSP did nothing but frame innocent lives. How many people were ruined because of the agency? How much longer do you want to keep that up?" Il-sung questions him with a look of disbelief. "...I'm not you. I don't want my daughter growing up seeing me as some evil man who destroys lives."

"Why are you so against me, huh? Are you acting out because I had no interest in meeting and welcoming that woman you chose to marry? You could have been with someone of much higher status-"

"So that it could bring our family bigger promotions and more opportunities. But only you would be getting anything out of it. You've only cared about your happiness not mine." Il-sung says, rolling his eyes.

Tae-il lets out a frustrated sigh. "It's so hard trying to talk you into anything! This good nature of yours, you got it from your lowly mother!"

He is suddenly slammed against the wall by his furious brother.

"Don't talk about her like that."

"Dada?"

Il-sung takes a deep breath and releases him. "It's okay, Hana... I did consider going back to Germany only because of how you wouldn't bother meeting the love of my life nor accept her and my daughter as part of this family. You don't want to support me? Fine. But don't ask me to quit my job when I'm trying to make a difference. I'm not letting you or anybody else making things go back to the way they were. For what? So you and your buddies could get a promotion? Just get rid of anyone who pisses you off? To make yourselves look like the good guys when you're the ones who created the madness? I want people to have faith in us not live in fear of us. And me helping those people wasn't a mistake. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I don't want Hana to grow up in the type of environment that you wish for."

"There are only two types of people in this world! Predator or prey. And you can only be one! You rather be the prey?" Tae-il sighs. "...I'm giving you one last chance. You won't change your mind?" He doesn't receive an answer. "...You're too softhearted. I knew you weren't cut out for this line of work. I warned abeoji but the old man just wouldn't listen." He says before walking over to the front door. He grabs the doorknob and seems to hesitate in opening the door. He closes his eyes and sighs before opening the door and looks ahead with a determined stare. "...Deal with him."

Gyeong-hui approaches Nam Tae-il's car. He knocks on the window and Tae-il rolls the window down.

"Sir. She's near the house... Was it really a good idea to do it this way? Why did you not do it in a more secluded area?"

"I did consider that but...let him have one last moment with his wife and kid. I'm taking everything from him, I should at least let him have something before he goes." Tae-il answers, crossing his arms.

"Ah! You're so kind, sir!" Gyeong-hui says with a smile that soon goes away. "But to be honest because he's your brother, I'm surprised that you're able to go through with this."

"He would have continued to become a problem if we didn't rid of him. Because he's my brother, it's my responsibility that he should be taken care of." Tae-il says, despite the conflicting emotions he's feeling at the moment.

As Seung Hee nears home, she hears Hana's cries making her hurry. Just as she is about to question her husband, she finds broken items on the floor but what surprises her the most is a blood trail... She looks to see a bleeding out Il-sung sitting up against the wall near Hana's playpen. She screams and rushes over to her husband's side.

"Il-sung!" She cries as she quickly covers his wound with her hands, trying to stop the bleeding. "Who did this to you?"

"I guess my hyung has been planning to get rid of me for a while. Me helping the North Koreans gave him the opportunity." He laughs. "It's funny that it makes sense. He's always hated me... He even wished I never existed."

"This isn't funny!" She snaps, almost on the verge of tears. "Your brother actually did this to you?!"

"His henchmen did. Hyung ordered the hit..."

"I'll call for help-" She quickly stands up, but he grabs her wrist.

"Stop." He says, pulling her back down. "The phone lines have been cut...and we don't have much time."

"...W-What? Why... Why are you talking as if you're going to die? You're going to be fine." Seung Hee says with a smile, trying to give him some positivity. "The ambulance will come; the doctors will stitch you back up and-and-"

He cups her cheek with his bloody hand and wipes away a tear. "...This is my end. You have to continue living for Hana."

Seung Hee shakes her head, not being able to accept of what's to come. He sighs and looks at his whimpering daughter.

"Hana." He uses his non bloody hand to gently stroke his daughter's cheek with his finger. "Be a good girl. You and your mom take care of each other while I'm gone, okay?"

"Dada." Hana sniffles as she looks up at her with her tear-stained face.

"Dada has to go very soon." He gives her a tearful smile. "I was suppose to watch you grow up and deny the suitors that would want my beautiful daughter... I'm sorry that I won't be able to do that. But who knows? Maybe the bodyguards that I hired for you will cross paths with you someday."

"Let me go! Just let me run to go get help!" Seung Hee cries louder as tries to get out of Il-sung's grip.

"Pi Seung Hee... I am deeply...in love with you." He says weakly and sheds a tear. "When I fell for you at first slap, I knew that you were the one... It was an honor to become your one and only bonehead." He lets out a weak laugh.

"You stupid bonehead! How can you leave me like this?! We were suppose to grow old together and move out to the countryside! We were suppose to meet our grandchildren! And when we die, we would die together! How can you just break our promises like this?!" She screams at him making Hana cry again.

"I know, I know. I'm sorry... But let's at least keep our promises to meet again in the afterlife. And in the next life, I'll find you..." He says with one last smile and suddenly his hands drop to the floor.

"...Il...Il-sung?" She stares at him with a shocked expression and starts shaking him seeing him no longer moving. "Il-sung? Il-sung?!"

As she cries and screams for her husband to open his eyes, Hana's cries become louder as if knowing her father is gone... A few minutes later, Seung Hee is suddenly pulled back into someone chest's and they quickly cover her mouth. As she struggles against her attacker, someone comes from behind them and the person who stands in front of her is Ahn Gyeong-hui...

"Pi Seung Hee. His older brother was kind enough to let you say your goodbyes. Your times up. Now we have some things to discuss about your husband and child." He informs her with making her eyes widened.

"DADA! MAMA!" Hana cries, reaching out for her mother who's being taken away.

Seung Hee continues to struggle, her desperate shouts for her daughter and husband muffled. However it does not stop her cries nor the anguish in her heart as she is dragged away from her crying daughter and dead husband...

Earlier...

"In your final moments, I'll allow you to say your goodbyes to your family." Tae-il says and is about to take his leave but is stopped when his younger brother grabs his ankle.

"You hate me that much? You would go this far to get rid of me?" Il-sung questions his older brother, groaning from the pain.

"The ANSP needs a strong leader and you're just not cut out for it. As for the agents that worked under you, don't worry. You'll be joining some of them soon." Tae-il speaks in a cold tone.

"What... What did you do?" Il-sung asks with widened eyes.

"U-jin." Tae-il sighs. "I don't know what it was about that punk, but he stayed loyal to you until the very end. As for your other followers some of them refused to betray you and the others caved. Those still alive will work for me once you're gone."

"How could you?! Why did you have to involve them?!"

"Because they would have gotten in my way and likely would have tried to avenge you... I don't know why abeoji bothered taking you in. You nearly brought this family down with your foolishness." Tae-il mutters, looking away from his brother. "Just think of this as a way of me looking out for you."

"Tae-il. Protecting me from those bullies when I was a kid and you shouting at my opponent who tried to cheat in our chess match... Those are ways of looking out for me. You actually acted like a big brother in those moments... I treasured those times a lot." Il-sung speaks, a hint of sadness in his voice.

Tae-il remains silent, not knowing what to say.

"Why can't you ever just say it? That you hate me?" Il-sung questions his older brother who still refuses to look at him. "You could never stand the fact that I became the director instead of you. You also hated that I became richer than you. You refused to support my decisions and my relationship. We barely talked anymore because of those things. You do realize that this is the most we've talked in almost a year?"

"...Do you regret being brought into this family? This never would have happened if-"

"I don't regret being born as your brother, nor fighting what for I believe in." He lets out a big sigh. "However, there is are two regrets that I have... Not being able to prevent the deaths of my friends. They all had great futures ahead of them... And not seeing my daughter grow up. But the decisions I made, I did it for her. I know that the world has never been peaceful, but I at least wanted her to have a peaceful life and hoped she wouldn't have to see how ugly the world can truly be... But the day you will come where you will regret this."

"...Goodbye, namdongsaeng." Tae-il says and shakes Il-sung's hand off of him before walking out of the house.

A few days later...

At a dam, a beaten Seung Hee hands are tied up as she stands in front of the railing where she could easily fall into the waterfall. She cries and whimpers while looking down while Gyeong-hui is standing behind her.

"Repeat after me. Spies come in chaos, and in prosperity comes in peace." She doesn't do as he says, continuing to cry. "You tenacious wench. How many more times do I have to tell you? If we... No if I say you're a spy, then you're a spy. A trial? That's just a formality." He then pushes her down the railing forcing her to look at the waterfall. "What are you doing? Look down properly. If you don't change your mind, you'll get swept down there and without a trace... Just like we did to your husband and will do to your daughter one day."

He makes her turn around to face him and grabs her by her restraints, hanging her over the dam making her scream.

"If you want your little girl to continue living, you'll do as I say! You're a spy, right?! ANSWER ME!"

"Alright! I'll do it! Just please don't kill her! I'll do anything you say! Please let my Hana live! Please!" She cries as she begs him.

1987

Then

"Thank you for having me here, ma'am!" Hana bows before the hall director with a smile.

"Come on, Hana! The faster we get our stuff unpacked, the faster we can get our favorite foods! You want fried chicken, don't you?!"

"Oh, I do!" She straightens back up and takes Seung Hee's hand and put butterscotch candies in it. "I hope you enjoy these!"

Hana gives her a big smile before running off to join Hye Ryung. Seung Hee watches her daughter go with a blank expression as she fights against all the emotions she is feeling on the inside.

Thank you staying for alive, Hana... Can you see her, Il-sung? She grew up well, didn't she?

Now

"Nam Tae-il had his own brother killed just to have the position of the ANSP's leader... To get the three hundred million?" Kang Moo asks with a shocked expression.

"He's so greedy for power that's the type of man he is... I've always resented him and will never forgive him for taking Il-sung from this world so soon. For taking my daughter away from me. Him and the ANSP that my husband fought so hard to change, took everything from us. They managed to erase everything as if Il-sung never existed." Seung Hee answers and looks up at her daughter who hasn't said a word. "I never wanted for you to know what really happened to your father... But that is how he met his end. He always had such a good heart and fought for what he believed in."

Hana remains silent and gets up from her seat, eventually leaving the room.

"Hana!" Soo-ho stands up from his seat, watching his girl with a worried look.

"Soo-ho." Seung Hee speaks, stopping him. "I believe that you truly love my daughter... So I'm trusting you to take care of her. I'm sure Il-sung would have as well."

He nods and hurries after her. He eventually finds her on the staircase, hand over her mouth to quiet her cries and a fist over heart with the pain she is feeling. He goes over to her and sits down, bringing her into his arms.

Sorry that I didn't have this out sooner! I knew what I wanted to do since I had this chapter planned for a while but got a little writers block on handling Il-sung's death and scenes between the brothers, I really struggled with. I don't think it's one of my best but how did ya'll feel about this chapter?

Surprising, huh? Il-sung was the previous ANSP director and he was making changes so that people wouldn't continue suffering. We've seen how ruthless the agency can be and Il-sung was a good guy so he was putting a stop to all the evil deeds. But some people just didn't agree with him, and they felt he had to go. Him helping the North Koreans escape, they used that as an opportunity to get rid of him. And in the show, it was mentioned that Tae-il killed the previous director of the ANSP so he could get the position. I used that as an idea.

How do you feel about Il-sung's character and ideals?

Hana finally knows everything now... And she is devastated...

Hoping I'll get the next part done soon which should be the last part of this episode!
