47 (plus a short story thingy)

I'm in advisor. I also wrote a short story for English class, so if you find any mistakes please point them out.
~Faith

I slowly open the door and it squeaks quietly; I hesitate for a moment. Adjusting my backpack I creep outside. It is a windy and cold night, unfortunately for me. I try to act naturally as I walk down the street, but it is way too late for a 14 year old boy to be out. If anyone saw me, I would be toast, and back in that horrible house for boys again. I reach the elementary school and turn to the forest behind the playground. Hopefully nobody will find me there for a couple of days while I figure out where to go. As I enter the forest, it quickly became pitch black. I shake my backpack off my shoulders and reach around for my flashlight; immediately after finding it I flip it on. Readjusting my bag I continue walking into the forest. Occasionally there is a gust of wind that sweeps through the forest, making me shiver. Eventually I come to stop near a small well. What is that doing here? I wonder. I lean against on of the trees next to me and grab my sheet and blanket. I lay the sheet out and use my backpack as a pillow, quickly falling asleep snuggled under the warm blanket.

Gently I run my eyes, some drops of golden sunlight trickling under the thick forest coverage to reach me. My stomach rumbles lowly. Searching in my backpack I try to find the lunchbox I packed. Soon enough I find it, and I pick out my favorite food, grilled cheese. "To freedom!" I shout into the forest as I bite the grilled cheese. Casually munching I here a loud banging noise come from the well. I set my sandwich on the lunchbox and walk over to investigate. The well looks quite old, and I as look over the edge, see a large tunnel at the bottom. Maybe I could stay in there for a while. It looks like nobody is using it anyway. I pick up my sheet and blanket and shove them in my backpack. Wonderfully for me there is still some old rope attached to the rotator wheel at the top. I tug at the rope, test to see if it wold hold my weight. There's no way I could fall, right? Carefully I grab the rope and slide down on it into the tunnel. It was very dark and turn on my flashlight again. The tunnel seems to be more of a cave.

While exploring, I see a flash of light coming from some point down the cave. I run toward the light, turning off my light so I can she the quick flashes better. I reach a door, old and somewhat covered in moss. A flash of light flows through the small window. I quickly turn the knob and open it and what looks like a bunch of young boys turn to look at me. "Who might you be?" a taller one asks, walking toward me. "Maxwell" I say, as confidently as possible. "Hmm. Why have you come here in the first place?" He asks me. I think about it. Do I tell them the truth? They haven't really earned my trust, but they haven't broken it either. I decide to tell them, "I ran away. I was walking through the forest up there," I say, gesturing upwards, "and saw a small well, I decided to explore it, saw a flash of light, and wound up here," I say honestly. "Well then Maxwell, I'm Nathan, and you're most definitely welcome here" Nathan says with a smile. He reaches out a hand for me to shake, and I return it, smiling genuinely back at him.

"So there are nineteen of us down here, you make it 20" Nathan explains as we walk through the cave houses. "There's Andrew, Lloyd, Michael, Richard, Johnathan, Adrian, Ethan, Isaac, Keegan, Alexander, Cory, Shawn, Finneas, Henry, Trenton, Conner, Leif, Jason, and myself." He pointed out. I smiled distractedly. It was quite dark and I didn't like it. We came to a small hut and he ushered me in, leaving me to my thoughts. They better make good grilled cheese, I joked with myself. Hopefully, I've found myself a good home.
