57. He's Out of Line, But He's Right

"Whoa. Whoa, whoa." Sam mutters in disbelief. He moves to step towards where Zemo was entering the garage, but Bucky steps in front of Sam, stopping him.

"Doll, Luna, listen to me." Bucky says as he grabs onto his wife's arm gently. He could tell she was barely holding herself back for the sake of himself and Sam.

"What the hell is he doing here?" Mary snaps loudly at Zemo.

"I didn't wanna tell either of you 'cause i knew you wouldn't let this happen." Bucky states, "We need him." He adds quickly as Zemo raises his hands in the air. Mary was ready to tear Zemo's soul apart and stitch it back together slowly. Bucky knew she was out for vengeance.

"What did you do?!" Sam asks in disbelief and then looks over at Zemo, "You're going back to prison." He snaps.

Zemo slowly steps closer to the three of them and removes his prison guard hat. "If i may-"

"No!" All three shout in unison, Mary pointing at Zemo with her eyes glowing bright amber. All Zemo does is nod, dipping his head slightly.

"Apologies." He whispers.

Bucky looks between his wife and comrade, trying to get them both to lower their tempers, especially Mary, and at least try to see his side of things. "When Steve refused to sign the Sokovia Accords, you both backed him. You broke the law, and you both stuck your neck out for me." He says, looking at Mary and Sam. He was pleading with them. "I'm asking you to do it again." He whispers.

Mary looks at him, her eyes still bright amber but she wasn't doing anything with her powers other than feeling the room's emotions. "I love you, James. And i trust you." She says and then points at Zemo while still holding her husband's gaze. "It's him i don't trust." She states.

"I really think i'm invaluable...." Zemo begins to say.

"Shut up." Sam snaps at Zemo before Mary can.

"Alpha... He tore our family apart." Mary reminds Bucky.

"Stark was going to find out what i..." He pauses when he sees his wife's facial expression, "What Winter did to his parents... he was going to take it out on me sooner or later... and with Steve knowing what happened all that time since the helicarriers in DC... it was only a matter of time."

"You're saying we were treading on thin ice and Zemo only helped it break quicker..." Mary says softly, sighing because she knows her husband is right. Sam knew it as well, which was why he wasn't speaking at the moment. They both hated it to their cores.

But to stop Karli and the other Flag Smashers, they needed an in. And Zemo sadly was that in.

Mary breathes out slowly, her eyes finally dimming to a soft glow. "Okay." She whispers.

"If we do this.... You don't make a move without our permission. Especially Mary's." Sam states, looking at Zemo. "You destroyed her family. So you play by her rules."

Zemo looks at Mary, taking in that something was different about her. The pendant around her neck was new, her eyes were not hazel anymore but bright amber. They glowed with power like the Maximoff sister did. He was curious. So he'd do his best to not make her angry and find out what she could now do by accident.

"Fair." The Baron responds.

Mary crosses her arms and looks at Zemo, "Okay, Zemo, where do we start?" She asks begrudgingly.

"So our first move is grand theft auto?" Sam asks, still pissed they were now including Zemo in what they were doing. But they needed him at the moment.

The vast garage lights turn on and Mary takes in all the cars surrounding them as they walk around. "These are mine. Collected by family over the generations." Zemo explains as he opens the trunk of one of the cars.

Mary glances around at the inside of a car with her husband as Sam wandered around the other cars surrounding them. "I hate to admit it...."

"But he has taste.." Bucky finishes his wife's sentence with a nod. "These are our time..."

"Jamie would love these." She whispers, looking at her husband with a small smile.

The Wolves are brought out of their moment when Zemo speaks again, "I spent years hunting people Hydra recruited to recreate the serum." He says as he opens a door to a vintage yellow car. "Because once it's out there..."

"Someone could create an army of people." Mary states and Zemo looks at her with a nod of agreement. "I was Erskine's apprentice. I know all about the serum." She says, remembering the night that Abraham had given Mary the formula. She was the only person aside from Evelyn now that knew the true formula, not the new one that had somehow been created.

"I ended the Winter Soldier program once before. I have no intention of leaving my work unfinished." Zemo says as he grabs a jacket and a duffle bag from the car. "To do this, we'll have to scale a ladder of lowlifes."

"Well, join the party. We've already started." Sam comments. He glances at Mary, both he and Bucky were wary of her. Her eyes hadn't stopped glowing dimly since she 'calmed down' and agreed to her husband's plan. The ride to the garage they're in now was not easy for her.

"First stop if a woman named Selby. Mid level fence I still have a line on. From there, we climb." Zemo states quickly, leading the way out of the garage.

Mary stands in the middle of her husband and friend. They exchange glances skeptically but if this was the way to find out how the serum was made, then that's what they'd have to do. They walk out of the garage onto an airport runway. Sam looks at Zemo in confusion.

"So, all this time you've been rich?" Sam asks in disbelief as they walk towards a private jet.

"I'm a Baron, Sam." Zemo says casually, as if him having money was common knowledge. "My family was royalty until your friends destroyed my country." He points out and looks at Mary, "No offense, i know you were there." He says.

"And we saved thousands of lives from Ultron." Mary reminds the Baron and his nods curtly.

"Remind me again.... Who created Ultron?" Zemo asked, looking at Mary with a knowing smirk. When she doesn't respond, he got his answer. "You had to clean up your own mess. And my family paid the price for it." He states simply. When they walk around the wing of the jet, he breaks out into a genuine smile, seeing his friend and butler. The two greet each other in Sokovian. He then backs away from the butler and motions with his arm for them to get on the jet. "Please."

When they step onto the jet, Bucky sits in one of the plush chairs across from Sam against the wall of the jet. The husband doesn't like the thought of his wife sitting away from him, so he grabs her gently by the hips and pulls her onto his lap. Zemo visibly cringes at the sight of their PDA and looks at Sam.

Before Zemo says anything about it, Sam shakes his head, "It's best to ignore it." He says, "I don't even notice it anymore at this point." He adds and Zemo nods quietly, his eyes still on the couple.

"Are they always like this?" Zemo asks curiously, his eyes lingering on Mary's pendant before looking at Sam.

Sam glances at the two and shrugs, "Depends on one of their moods." He explains as best he can. He didn't know the full extent of Mary and Bucky's PDA, but he knew that when one of them was stressed, physical contact played a huge role in their relationship. "When you've been apart for over seventy years.... You tend to just let it happen." He adds

"Seventy years?" Zemo asks curiously. He knew most of what went on with the Winter Soldier and Mary Barnes. But not its entirety.

Sam nods as the jet takes off into the air. Mary and Bucky were having their own conversation in Wakandan quietly. "You can probably make that eighty years by now, but yeah. They're making up for lost time." Sam says and then looks at Zemo, "You had a wife... so i can safely assume you'd do anything to get a moment with her again."

Zemo nods, not liking how Sam brought up his deceased wife but he agreed nonetheless. If he had his wife back in his arms, he could only guess what he would do.

"And... Mary is different now, am i correct?" Zemo asks and both Mary and Bucky stop their conversation and turn to look at Zemo. Bucky didn't like that Zemo was asking all these questions, trying to learn more about them.

"I am." Mary responds curtly, leaning into her husband as his arms tightened slightly around her frame. "But if you wish to know why? That's not for you to know." She answers him without taking a moment to pause. Zemo was not going to find out she had powers unless it was absolutely dire for him to know. And he especially was not going to know that the pendant he was eyeing around her neck was an Infinity Stone. The most powerful stone of all the six.

"Pity." Zemo responds with a slight nod as his butler walks down the aisle and hands Zemo a glass of champagne. "Apologies if that's a little warm, the fridge is out. But i will see if there is some good food in the galley." The butler says to Zemo, Sam rolls his eyes at the formalities.

Mary sees it differently than Sam and Bucky do. She sees the loyalty this man has held for Zemo's family for however long he's been in their service. It reminds her of Edwin, how devoted he was to Howard and then Tony. He kind and caring he was despite being labeled as 'help'. Edwin was family, and Mary suspected that this man was family to Zemo.

Zemo responds in Sokovian and what he says causes the butler to laugh. Mary rolls her eyes at Zemo as he raises his glass towards the three of them with a smirk. "Figures." Mary mutters.

"It's good to have you back, sir." The butler says, still chuckling at Zemo's joke as he exits the cabin.

Sam eyes Zemo when he speaks, "You don't know what it's like to be locked in a cell." He says and then pauses, smirking at Sam. "Oh.... That's right... you do." Zemo quips.

Mary narrows her eyes at Zemo but Bucky holds his wife where she is on his lap. Not letting her move to throw hands. "Easy, Luna..." He whispers to her. To help calm her, he places a kiss behind her ear and down her neck.

"He has no right talking to Sam like he is." Mary snaps quietly. The couple was using the technique Mary and Steve created back during the war. Her voice was low enough that non supered hearing couldn't pick up on it.

"I know." Bucky whispers in reply as he leaves a kiss on her shoulder. "But for the moment, we need him." Mary huffs in frustration, but Bucky was calming her down.

"I expect a call from either Everett or Cha Cha soon, Alpha." Mary says, turning to look at him, "You know breaking him out will draw the attention of home."

"And we'll deal with that when it comes. You're their advisor, if you have a plan.... They'll follow you." Bucky says in hopes of it coming true. Mary was loved by T'Challa and the royals; most of the council had welcomed her after the events that transpired with Kilmonger. And after years of being their Advisor, aside from the five year gap, she had made her loyalties clear.

Wakanda was her home. And she would defend it til her last breath.

"I don't want them doubting me, though. Am i putting a mission above the justice they deserve for T'Chaka's death?" Mary questions, voicing her thoughts aloud for Bucky. "He killed T'Challa and Shuri's father. He made Ramonda a widow. I know her grief intimately. I've been where she was, Alpha. And if i knew your killer was waltzing around who knows where with people i trust, i'd question loyalties to some extent."

Bucky nods, leaning his chin into his hand as he stares at Zemo enjoying his champagne. It made him feel sick, how easy Zemo fell back into his previous life before his imprisonment. Like he hadn't learned anything.

"I understand, Luna. I do." Bucky responds and leans towards her, kissing her temple. "We'll keep close eye on him during this. And you can use your power to figure him out if you need to."

"I intend to." Mary says softly, effectively ending their conversation.

Sam takes notice of Mary and Bucky's quietness and looks towards Zemo, "Why don't you tell us about where we're going?" He asks.

Zemo shakes his head, "I'm sorry." He says as he looks over the book he had picked up. "I was just fascinated by this. I don't know what it call it, but this part seems to be important." Zemo says and he holds up Bucky's notebook. "Who is.... Nakajima?" He asks.

Mary's eyes widen and both her and Bucky sprint out of the chair. Bucky grabs onto his notebook and snaps it closed. He hands it to Mary and then grabs Zemo by the collar of his shirt. "You touch that again, I'll kill you." Bucky threatens the Baron. When Zemo nods his response, understanding that this was not a matter he could negotiate, Bucky backed down.

Bucky turns around from Zemo and grabs onto Mary, holding her tightly as her arms wrap around his neck tightly. Standing on her tiptoes and kissing his forehead, "Alright, Alpha. He's dealt with." She whispers. "Come back to me." Mary says, looking into his blue eyes with her amber ones. Her hand rests on his cheek as his breathing calms down slowly.

Sam simply watches Mary calm down Bucky, bringing him back from the edge with ease. It was impressive how quickly she calmed down the dormant killer inside of Bucky that was still there. "You two okay?" Sam asks cautiously.

Mary leads Bucky back to their chair and he pulls her onto his lap once again as he sits down. The Luna looks over at Sam and nods. "We're fine." She says in response.

Zemo clears his throat and looks at the couple, "I'm sorry... I understand that list of names. People you've wronged as the Winter Soldier." He says.

"Don't push it." Bucky states gruffly.

"I've seen that book. It was Steve's when he came out of the ice." Sam says with a half smile and Mary nods, chuckling softly at the memory. "I told him about Trouble Man. He wrote it in that book." Sam explains and looks at Mary, "What else did he have in there again?"

"I made him put down I Love Lucy, Star Wars and Star Trek, the Olympics." Mary says, listing off things she could remember at the moment.

"Did you hear Trouble Man?" Sam asks with a smile, "What'd you think?"

"I like forties music, so..." Bucky says softly. Mary chuckles softly.

"You didn't like it?" Sam asks, almost stunned.

"I liked it." Bucky responds.

"It is a masterpiece, James. Complete. Comprehensive." Zemo inputs. Mary nearly corrected the Sokovian Baron but chose not to. "It perfectly captures the African American experience."

Sam looks at Zemo with confusion, "Wh- He's out of line, but he's right. It's great." Sam says, stunned Zemo would say something like that but agreeing nonetheless. "Everybody loves Marvin Gaye."

"I like Marvin Gaye." Bucky defends himself with a sigh.

"Steve adored Marvin Gaye." Mary says and Sam grins slightly with a nod.

"Exactly." Sam agrees with Mary.

"You must have really looked up to Steven." Zemo says to Sam, but also Mary and Bucky. "But i realized something when i met him... the danger with people like him, like your family, Mary, America's Super Soldiers, is that we put them on pedestals."

"Watch your step, Zemo." Sam snaps low. He knew if he didn't say something, then Mary or worse, Bucky, would snap at Zemo.

"They become symbols. Icons. And then we start to forget about their flaws. From there, cities fly, innocent people die. Movements are formed, wars are fought." Zemo continues, "You remember that, right? As a young soldier sent to Germany to stop a mad icon. Do we want to live in a world full of people like the Red Skull?" Zemo asks the question and it causes Mary to pause and think. Was there truth to what he was saying? Mary knew that Steve had flaws, but he also learned from his mistakes. And then it hit her.

This was why Becca chose to give up the shield. Not only so she could finish high school but because she wanted to still be allowed to be herself until she had to inevitably give it up and take up the mantle. To step onto her uncle's pedestal and assume the righteous role of Captain America. And if she made a mistake, she would feel she was no longer worthy of the title that was given to her. She had to learn more about herself and grow into the woman she was becoming before taking up something as big as what the Shield meant to not only her family, but to the world.

"Doll?" Bucky whispers, pulling his wife from her thoughts. Mary shakes her head and smiles softly at her husband.

"I'm good." She whispers in response.

"That is why we are going to Madripoor." Zemo states.

Mary's eyes widen and her head whips around to look at Zemo. "Hell no." She snaps. "You are not taking us there."

"But i am." Zemo responds.

Sam looks at Mary with hesitancy, if she didn't want to go there then there was good reason for it. "What's up with Madripoor? You guys talk about it like it's Skull Island."

"It's an island nation in the Indonesian archipelago." Bucky explains, "It was a private sanctuary back in the 1800s."

"It's kept its lawless ways." Mary states, "Logan told me about when he went there decades ago. He told me to never step foot there." She explains to Sam.

"But we cannot exactly walk in as ourselves." Zemo informs them and Mary eyes him skeptically.

"Ja-"

"I swear to the Lord above, Zemo. If you say his name, i will break your nose." Mary snaps, her eyes glowing bright amber and wisps dance around her fingers. Zemo takes notice of Mary's obvious temper and nods.

"Alright." Zemo mutters and then looks at them, "Bucky..." Mary nods and he continues, "You will have to become someone you claim is gone." He finishes and looks at Bucky's expression.

Bucky already knew this was going to happen when he heard Madripoor. And he was composed on the outside, resigned to the fact that he would have to act like Winter again. But this time was different.

This time Mary would be there. And his one promise to himself was going to be broken. His wife would finally see with her own eyes, the horror of the Winter Soldier.
