Chapter 1 - Toriel

(P/F) - (Pie Flavour)

...A white, fluffy goat-person? Well, did I just realise how weird devil man was!

They held their paw out, offering it to me. "My name is Toriel, and I am the caretaker of the ruins." She explained. Judging by their name and voice, I guessed it was a girl.

"Wait, 'ruins'? Is that another word for hell?" I tilted my head, taking Toriel's extended hand. "Hell??? My child, you are in no such place." Toriel giggled, shaking my hand. "If you don't mind me asking, what is your name?"

"My name is... uh......" I racked my brain for answers, but to no avail. I just stood there, stammering like an idiot. Toriel seemed to take notice of this, immediately thinking of a solution.

"I know! Why don't you make a name for yourself if you don't remember?" Toriel suggested. I nodded, tapping my chin in thought. What should it be, then?

"...Opal." I stated bluntly. I didn't know why, but I kinda liked that name. "That is a beautiful name, my child!" Toriel clapped excitedly.

I giggled. "Yup. Now that we've got greetings down... Where exactly am I?" I questioned. "The Underground, my child. Follow me, I will take you to my home." Toriel beckoned and quickly walked away, me rushing after her.

"Hold on! I can't walk as fast as you!" I called, running. She slowed, giggling as she looked at me. "Oops, sorry! Sometimes I forget how fast I am of a walker." She apologized, walking alongside me now that I caught up.

As we walked further, it got brighter. The light gave me a sense of... satisfaction, in a way. No, that isn't the word... Ah, forget it. I glanced at the walls, scanning all the cracks and vines in between the bricks. "...You sure I'm not in hell?" I pondered to Toriel. She gazed at me sadly. "Listen Opal, I know it may look like a... hell hole," she snorted, covering her muzzle with a furry paw. "but as we get deeper, you'll see that there's more to a book than just it's cover." She stated wisely, her pace starting to quicken again. I tried with all my might to match her speed, panting lightly in the process.

Toriel had explained to me what the Underground was, how her fellow monsters got trapped down here by my kind, and showed me the puzzles that were there. I even got to do one or two of them! Then we came to a beautiful path made of fall leaves that lead to a tree. I ran up to it, amazed.

"Things can grow down here?" I exclaimed. "Yes, but I am not sure how." Toriel tapped her chin thoughtfully. "Ah, we're here! Come, my child." Toriel walked into a structure that was ahead, me following.

"This is my house!" She gestured to the walls around her when I walked in. "You're room is over here." Toriel walked to a hallway on the right, me assuming she wanted me to follow. She abruptly stopped in front of a door, and I accidentally bumped into her much taller form. "Whoops! Sorry-" We both apologized in unison. We both giggled, facing the door.

"Beyond that door is where you'll be staying, Opal." She explained, caressing my head. I looked up at her, smiling as she smiled back. "...Thank you for doing this for me." I thanked. "It is of no inconvenience, my child." She insists. "That reminds me; do you like pie?"

"Heck yeah!!!" I yell, making her chuckle. I didn't want to swear in front of her, seeing how motherly she was. "Well then, would you prefer butterscotch or cinnamon?" Toriel asked. "Wait, are you actually going to make pie?" I question. She nods, making me bounce around excitedly. "Then (P/F), please!" I request politely. "Alrighty, then! I'll get baking right away! In the meantime, why don't you get some rest? You seem pretty tired." She urged, walking out with a smile. I yawn, stretching. A nap doesn't sound too bad...

I crawl into the comfy looking bed, curling up into a ball. I slowly drifted to sleep as the coziness of the bed filled me with... there's that word again. What is it...?

...Determination.
