Chapter XLIII: Purple Purpose

Our heroes found themselves in front of a smaller pyramid.

"There it is. The backdoor to the seventh melody" Michael said.

"And the truth behind my powers" Amethyst added. She shot a purple flame at the gold door, melting a hole through, as she and Peridot stepped through. Michael cooled down the gold so he and Robert could step through.

"Aren't you coming, Ivy?" Robert asked.

"I need to keep watch so the security officers preventing access to the original pyramid do not approach. I need to set up an optical deception device around it, or as you call it an 'Illusion machine'" Ivy said, laying down some sort of device, making what appeared to be a forcefield around it. To outside eyes, this made it look like the pyramid didn't exist at all, just the background.

As they went deeper inside, it got darker. "Ugh, can't someone turn on a light?" Amethyst asked. "Can't you use your flames?" Peridot asked her.

She tried, but there was no light, only an area that would burn if you touched it. "My flames don't light up, but Robert's do, right?" She asked. Robert illuminated the area with him holding up a fireball to act as a torch.

"My question is why didn't you bring Pearl?" Robert asked. "Her gem is like a helmet light."

"This is a secret by Pink Diamond, you think she would let us find out a secret about her Goddess?" Michael said, the last part being in a mocking tone.

"Hey! That's my mother!" Amethyst growled.

"And that means anything? She lied to the only people who trusted her. I still overhear Garnet flipping her lid from the living room when she's in her room. Just because she's your mom doesn't excuse her from scrutiny and criticism." Michael explained.

Amethyst was confused, because when they met, he was afraid of her, and now he has the audacity to speak poorly of Pink Diamond.

Along the seemingly endless hallway were once torches that had been reduced to just the pins that used to hold them.

They eventually got to what they were looking for: A door to the main Pyramid. There were hieroglyphics on the wall, and since nobody could read them, Michael broke out his translator on his arm cannon.

"Only allies of the Light Prognosticus may enter, All others must turn back or be killed" Michael read.

"How do we prove we are?" Peridot asked. Amethyst noticed there were torches still intact on either side of the door, She tried to light them, but Peridot grabbed her hand. "Maybe we should let Robert give it a go" She suggested.

Amethyst rolled her eyes. "Why?" she asked.

"Because...I don't want to see you get hurt...And look." Peridot said, pointing at the small ring around the wick "Those are heat sensors, if you use your flames, which are noticeably hotter than his, a trap might activate."

"Fine" Amethyst said as Robert lit the flames. The door opened on its own like a sliding glass door the instant Robert lit both flames. The room revealed to be a tomb of various pharaohs, servants, and commonfolk.

"I always wondered what a human looks like when they're deceased." Peridot said, approaching one of the caskets.

Michael yanked her back with an arm of applewood. "Peridot, don't disturb the caskets. Have you not heard of the curses this place is riddled with?" He said to her.

"Plus, it's disrespect to the dead." Robert added.

"Curses are mere fiction, a hoax to scare us away!" Peridot retorted.

"Funny you should say that as we now live with an ACTUAL WITCH!" Michael shouted back.

"Shut up, both of you, we don't want the 'old Hag' knowing we're here." Robert said. They made their way through the maze into an elevator that went down one floor.

...

It opened to reveal some sort of laboratory with various machines that served no real purpose all hooked up to the one thing that was still active: A supercomputer that could barely run Windows 95.

"Can any of you get this thing to show us what we need?" Amethyst asked.

"Ask one of the nerds" Michael said, using cyrokinesis to give everyone an ice headband so they don't die of heatstroke.

"I have no real experience with earth computers, except for installing an internet router." Peridot said. "...that ran away"

Robert stepped up to the plate and couldn't find an input device. No mouse, keyboard, joystick, controller, or anything to get it moving, until he found something that fit the Michael-buster. "Hey, Michael, can you lend me that arm cannon?" Robert asked. Michael rolled his eyes. "Fine, but don't break it with your teen sweat" he remarked. Robert put it on, and hooked it to the computer. Robert could control it using his hand, and found it very easy to use.

"Alright, where to first?" he asked.

"Is there anything about her Rose Quartz facade?" Michael asked impatiently.

Robert looked through the files and found one named "roseQuartz.msg" and opened it. As he did, a pink cybernetic eye opened like a webcam atop the screen and glowed to show a holographic render of Pink Diamond herself.

"Hello, this message is exclusively to the prophesied human heroes of Light and their allies. Anyway, the reason I am issuing this message is to let you know that I am assuming a new persona: Rose Quartz. Do not let any of the other rebels know of this. I am letting you know because it could be very much vital in the case the other diamonds capture you and question you about "my" shattering. If any others were to know about this, our rebellion could be very well split apart, and I could be shattered for real." the hologram explained.

"Please keep in mind this is a pre-recorded message, so any questions you may have will not be answered."

The message ended with Pink Diamond shapeshifting into Rose Quartz. There were other messages, mostly useless information, almost like a diary.

"Is there anything on Amethyst?" Peridot asked.

Robert searched through the seemingly unending list of files before stumbling upon a file labeled "zzzprojectNoraAmethystTopSecret.msg" at the very end. Robert turned to Amethyst, who looked adamant in him playing the message.

Robert clicked on the file, and the pink eye projected Pink Diamond once again. She looked solemn.

"I fear the prophecy may not come true" she said after about thirty seconds of silence. "That is why I began on Project Nora. I did this experiment on an Amethyst due to their durability and low costs. I made her so that there is at least one hero in the case that the hero...isn't real..." She said. Michael threw some seeds on the ground and they rolled to the computer.

"I hope this isn't the case and I can re-use the materials for other projects. I am having one of my peridots help with the experiment. I-"

That was all Pink Diamond could say before the computer was crushed in a fist of cherrywood and applewood.

"Thanks Michael..." Amethyst said. She looked like she was about to either explode in a fit of rage or start to cry. Robert gave Michael back his cannon and tried to sit down with her, only for him to be turned away

"Don't talk to me! If it weren't for you, I'd be the chosen hero!" She yelled.

"Amethyst? A-Are you okay?" Peridot asked.

"I will be, when he's outta the picture!" She said, summoning her whip. Robert looked down and thought about this. He felt no reason to keep going on. Amethyst and Michael could fulfill the role as far as he was concerned, and nobody in his family seemed to care about his problems. They always seemed more concerned about Michael and Arya than him, so his loss didn't seem to affect anything that he knew.

Robert unsheathed his sword only to drop it on the ground, wanting to give Amethyst the satisfaction of killing him, and opened his arms. "Go ahead" He said.

"Amethyst, think about this. Do you really think Lapis or Mom would forgive you if you killed him?" Michael asked.

"He's right! This isn't the quartz I care about." Peridot added.

"No no, Let it happen. Lapis deserves better and Mom will be happy there's one less mouth to feed." Robert explained. "And I want Amethyst to have the spotlight she deserves."

Amethyst's anger turns into remorse as a look of shock appears on her face. She sighs before phasing away her weapon.

"I'm sorry, Robert," she said.

"Amethyst, it's fine," he said.

"You don't get it. My whole purpose for existing was only to be a back-up plan. If there's no need for the back-up plan, then what good am I? Am I just... Useless?" she asked, looking downward.

Peridot walks up to Amethyst before tilting the quartz's head up to face her before bringing Amethyst's lips to hers. Amethyst's eyes widen before she returns the kiss, cupping Peridot's cheeks.

The kiss went on for a full minute before they both pulled back.

"P-Peri?" said Amethyst, blushing.

"Do you think I would have fallen in love with you if you were useless?" Peridot asked.

Amethyst blushed and smiled.

"I don't care what that hoe says. Like it or not, you're not a back up plan, you're not useless, and you're certainly not a killer. You're part of the family, you're Steven's sister and you're a hero." Michael said assertively. "And like I said, just because she's your mom doesn't excuse her from criticism and scrutiny"

"But where's the melody?" Robert asked. "Isn't that the whole reason we agreed to come here?"

"Looks like she was hiding it" Peridot said, pointing at the door behind the destroyed computer. Michael went to the door and peeked through it.

"What do you see, Michael?" Robert asked.

"Looks like some sort of tomb" Michael responded, opening the door wider to reveal what looked like a proper grave. The tombstone read in English

"Here lies Zelda Aran: Seventh Mage of Light"

As the four entered the room, a ghostly figure of a woman wearing a witch's robes appeared in front of them.

"So thou art finally here." She spoke.

"What...kind of human...are you?" Peridot asked. "I don't recall any that are luminous or translucent."

"That beeth because I am deceased." The ghost spoke. "If thou could not properly tell, I am Zelda Aran, seventh mage of light. I predict you wish to learn the seventh melody that I carry?" She asked.

Robert and Michael nodded.

"Very well." She said, and she sang:

"...Love is the magic

Love is the story"...

With this, Robert, Michael, and Amethyst all felt new power flowing through them.

Robert could now turn completely into an invincible statue. While in this state, nothing can hurt him, but at the same time, he can't move or use any other power, so he couldn't use this and attack with fire at the same time.

Michael could now make a tornado around him to rip through enemy structures, but it starts small, and ripping through structures makes the tornado stronger and larger.

Amethyst now had improved shapeshifting capapbilities, as she could now change her color and change her voice, as long as it was a relatively female voice. However, her gem always stayed the same purple no matter what.

Peridot felt left out because she didn't get a new ability. Michael saw this. "Ah, don't sweat it, jelly bean! I'm sure Uncle Thomas'll make somethin' for ya!" Michael said, ruffling Peridot's hair. "I don't need help from a human!" Peridot hissed. Michael laughed.

"Wait a minute...What about the sixth melody?" Robert asked. "Please tell me you got it at some point, Michael."

"Relax, man. I got it, I'll write it down later." He responded. "Why can't you sing it now?" Peridot asked.

"The mages aren't supposed to get the other melodies, as told by the Light Prognosticus" Robert explained. Zelda smirked "Smart one, I appreciate that." She said. A light appeared above her. "As it seems, I must leave. I hath fulfilled my purpose." She explained before fading into it. The light faded away, and Robert lit a fireball torch once again, somehow growing brighter than before. It illuminated the previous room, revealing several tools. Michael dug through the pile of parts before finding what appeared to be a spring-loaded three-pronged claw attached by a chain to a base with a handle. He put it in his buster, and could now use the Hook Shot. Michael handed Robert a boomerang and Amethyst a warhammer.

"Thanks, Michael, but I already use a whip, which is much easier to carry than a warhammer" Amethyst explained. "Well, could hold on to it? For me?" Michael asked.

Amethyst rolled her eyes and put it in her gem. "What about me?" Peridot asked. Michael looked in the pile and found several circular saws, all the same size and, somehow, all still glossy. Peridot tried making them float, which worked, and they headed out. Michael froze the torches so nobody else could get in or out.

"Aren't you going to question Ivy about this?" Peridot asked Amethyst as they were walking back out the hallway.

"You know...I think I might" Amethyst responded.

As they exited the backdoor, they hears a voice that was none pleasing

"Miss me, Light?" She said.

To be continued...
