Third Person POV

"I'm scared, mama..." Kora whispers to her mother as they walk up a long set of dark stairs towards the surface. "It'll be okay, Kor. Dad's back with us now so we'll be safe." Her mother sweetly smiles down at her daughter, petting her (texture) black hair. "Hands to yourself, crook." A troop from behind them spits out, irritation laced in his gravely voice. (F/n) retreats her hand back to her side, continuing up the stairs between the troops with her family, Isabel, and Farlan. "When we get past the exit, you two make a run for it. Change your identities and make a living for yourselves. I'll find you in the future." Levi whispers to his girlfriend, keeping his gaze ahead of them. "Wha-...? We're not leaving you behind!" (F/n) whispers back, in shock. "No talking either!" The same troop barks, hand over his sheathed swords. "Easy." Their Commander waves his hand as he looks over his shoulder. "We're almost to the surface."

Kora's eyes widen as she sees a light on the wall in front of them. That could only come from one thing. As they get to a landing on the staircase, the large group turns the corner, and is faced with blinding sunlight. As everyone squints the rest of the way up, Kora feels a smile grow on her face from the new warmth and fresh smells all around. Directly behind her, the dirty-blonde troop with the facial hair grins at her demeanor. He's had a soft spot for the child since they raided her home, genuinely feeling bad they had to do it. Hopefully, this opportunity would give her a better life here on the surface.

Breaking past the exit of the Underground, the Commander talks to the entrance guards about the situation while the criminals silently look around in awe. "Mama, look!" Kora gasps, pointing up at the bright blue sky full of puffy white clouds and birds. (F/n) meets her daughter's wandering eyes, gently smiling at the new scene before them. Glancing over at Levi, he's doing the exact same. Him and Kora were exactly alike, hence the cheerfulness on her side. "All right, get in." The tall, blonde Commander orders, showing the group to a horse-drawn wagon. Levi looks at his family, leading the way and climbing on first. Using his tied-up hands, he reaches out to help Kora up, but they get smacked away. The disgruntled troop shoves Levi to the back of the wagon, pushing Kora up right after. "Ouch!" The child whines, hitting her shoulder on a bench. Levi's eyes narrow on the troop, anger boiling in his blood just for that. (F/n) quickly climbs up after Kora, going to help her up the best that she could with restricted arms. Just as she gets on, the troop slaps her ass hard enough for her to stumble next to Kora. (F/n) flinches when her knees hit the boards, still too worried about her daughter than herself.

When the girls stand up and settle down on a bench, Levi gets up to give this guy a piece of his mind. "Levi-!" (F/n) gasps, turning away and blocking Kora's view when she hears him kick the guy in the head. The others all surround Levi, ready to throw him back down the stairs, but the Commander calms his troops down again. "Settle down. Levi, please sit while I handle this." The raven man clicks his tongue, fury still raging in his body as he reluctantly sits next to (f/n). "Levi... we're okay. Please don't get yourself in enough trouble to be separated from us again." His girlfriend whispers, eyes sad enough to make him listen. "I just want to protect you two." He mutters, keeping an eye out for those disgusting soldiers. Just then, the troop with facial hair approaches their side of the wagon, not making eye contact. "Don't worry about him. I'll make sure he doesn't harm any of you again." The man mumbles before walking away again. (F/n) looks back at Levi after the statement, curious. Levi, however, is still hesitant on trusting any of these people.

The horses stop in front of an old building, lit by a few lanterns outside of the large wooden door. The sun had set a while ago and Kora fell asleep during the long ride to their headquarters. "Where are we?" (F/n) asks Levi as she looks at the building. "No clue. This cant be their base, it's not big enough." He comments. "(F/n) ...and... the little one," The Commander calls, stepping out of the carriage in front of them. (F/n) looks up from her daughter's sleeping figure on her lap, giving him her full attention. "Y-Yes?" She asks. The blonde walks around to the wagon, a small grin on his face. "This is where you two will be staying." He nods his head towards the building behind him. (F/n) and Levi exchange a confused look before returning to the Commander. "What...? I thought we were staying together?" (F/n)'s brows furrow, worried. "Unfortunately, we can't allow that. Only soldiers and medics may stay at our headquarters." The man explains. The world feels like it's tearing her apart. First, they leave the Underground, then, they have to be separated? Again? "Sir... with all due respect, we need each other. Kora can't be without her father." She purses her lips after, hoping he will change his mind.

Commander Erwin thinks long and hard about this decision. He knows that Levi will take any chance he can grasp to leave if it interferes with his family's safety, but he needs him. "How about this," The blonde man clears his throat. "(F/n), you may stay for a little while until we can find a place for your daughter to stay. It's no place for a child in there. In the meantime, we can train you on the ODM gear so you can join the Scout Regiment along with Levi, Isabel, and Farlan." His offer sounds anything but reasonable. It sounds utterly insane to Levi. "That's-" The raven begins to say, but his girlfriend interrupts. "That's fine. Levi already taught me the basics in case of an emergency. I would gladly join if it means my family is together and safe." Levi's eyes widen by a fraction, staring at (f/n) in disbelief. "Perfect." Commander Erwin grins again, returning to his carriage. "Move along." He orders his men to continue forward to their base. "Why would you join? You're going to die along with us, (f/n)." Levi sighs, turning his head away. "Because I can't lose sight of you. I'm going to keep trying to convince him to let Kora stay with us too. I've almost lost you plenty of times in the Underground. Let's stop that routine."

*A few Weeks Later*

Sitting alone in her bed, Kora sniffles as she watches the empty palms of her hands, absorbing the fallen tears from her cheeks. The night had fallen a few hours prior, the moon and stars taking over the sky, after the long, rainy day. Word had spread that many soldiers passed during the first expedition since the girl and her family arrived on the surface. There's been no news on her parents yet, as she still awaits their arrival home from outside the walls, and through the many inner cities back to their base. The only fatalities she heard about from eavesdropping, were her parents friends, Farlan, and Isabel.

As the twelve-year-old weeps, the door to her bedroom squeaks open. Too emotional to notice the growing presence, a large, gentle hand rests on her left shoulder. Sniffling again, Kora slowly lifts her head towards the window and spots the figure's reflection. Immediately turning around, the child catches the Scout off guard by tightly hugging his waist, face buried in his shirt. The tall, dirty-blonde hesitantly kneels down, rubbing her back slowly to comfort her. When her tears seem to quiet down a bit, he speaks to her. "Your parents... are safe. They're in the infirmary now. Your mother suffered a concussion, nothing else, though." His deep voice is somehow so gentle for a being that used to look so scary to her. Kora's form stiffens before relaxing, the relief washing over her. "I-I want my daddy..." She whispers into Mike's shirt, muffled. "I'll take you." Mike grins softly, standing up with the short child. Although he works with ex-criminals now, he vowed to himself to watch over their daughter. No matter the background, no matter the person. She was still just an innocent child who needed protecting.

~~

Since the loss of her first friend from the surface, Kora learned the value of relationships, and trust. Mike was the first person who stood up for her and her family. The Scouts' base was definitely not an environment for a young child, but her parents worried about her well-being when she wasn't in their sight. Mike was the one who helped (f/n)'s parents make it to the surface in order for her to stay somewhere safer other than a military base. Over the few years of living a somewhat more normal life, all of the superiors grew to love the little family, especially Kora. Hange forcefully claimed themself as an adoptive relative to Kora, not caring if Levi objected to the idea. It took a while for Commander Erwin to admit he liked the young girl, secretly thinking of himself as her uncle within the first year of meeting them all. It did not take long for Kora to actually address him as such, making him feel super special when she acknowledged him as an uncle figure.

Every time that Kora came to visit, the superiors always looked forward to it. She was their only sense of normalcy and a distraction from the cruel world outside of those walls. After meeting her father's new squad, she was almost always the hot topic day-by-day. Levi's comrades always asked about her and when she would come to visit again. That's when he realized just how special his daughter was. She made an impact on many people's lives just from her kindness and cheerful attitude. She shone a light that no one knew they needed. All the gratefulness couldn't just go to her, however, because Mike was the person who truly showed her how to touch the lives of others.
