Chapter 65&66
It wasn't too long after Valentine's Day that I received a letter during breakfast.
Leah Riddle
Great Hall
Hogwarts School
I frowned at the highly unfamiliar owl who gave a soft hoot before flying away.
"Who's that from?" Blaise asked.
"Is it from mum?" Pansy asked hopefully and I shook my head.
"I don't recognize the handwriting or the owl," I said, opening the letter.
Leah,
I had never wanted to believe you or Harry about Voldemort's return. I wasn't even too sure that you were really his daughter, but after reading that story about the both of you in the 'Quibbler', well, I just had to believe it. I never spoke poorly about you to anyone who might possibly know you because...honestly, Voldemort's daughter or not, you're terrifying. However, I spoke very poorly about the whole story and I wanted to apologize for not believing the both of you. I hope that together you can save the wizarding world. I believe in you. If you wish to reply (which I'm not expecting you to) you can reach me at Beauxbaton's.
Claudette.
"What?" I muttered, staring at the letter. I could feel my friends' eyes on me, but I was too busy frowning at the letter to tell them what it said. I grabbed a piece of parchment and started writing to Claudette.
Claudette,
There has to be a mistake, I didn't do a story for the 'Quibbler'. I don't quite understand what this is all about. I appreciate your faith in Harry and me, but I don't understand where this sudden burst of faith came from. But was there really any doubt about Voldemort being my father?
Leah.
I attached the letter to Alisana who was next to me with the 'Daily Prophet' and I sent her off.
"Claudette at Beauxbaton's, okay?" I said and she was gone before I could blink.
"I just got a letter from some girl about how she suddenly believes Potter and me about Voldemort's return. She's got faith in us...but I never did a story for the 'Quibbler'," I frowned.
"That's really odd," Ariana said and Thane nodded.
"Didn't Granger ask you to tell her your story?" Draco asked.
"Well yes, but Rita Skeeter writes for the 'Prophet'," I said.
"That's true," he muttered. The next thing I knew, I was being flooded with letters and we were all tearing them open.
"...Kick Voldemort's ass, Leah..."
"... I believe you..."
"...I cannot believe I was so ignorant..."
"...I still think this is a lie..."
"...you are truly a hero..."
"...You are an icon for the whole wizarding world..."
We were all reading parts of different letters aloud, and the whole Hall was looking between the Gryffindor table and ours, seeing the flood of letters Potter and I were getting. I gave him a confused look and he smiled brightly at me, waving the 'Quibbler' so I could see it. I just gave him a look again and he shrugged at me, leaving me even more confused than before.
"Incoming," Draco said and I looked up to Alisana. What came attached to her leg wasn't a letter; it was a copy of the 'Quibbler' with a small note attached.
Sign it for me?
Oh Claudette...I'm like a celebrity and I don't even know why. Well I didn't know why until I saw the front cover. There were two pictures; one of Potter smiling sheepishly, and the other of me looking smug and dangerous. Where they got a picture of me, I have no idea, but the words across our pictures read:
Harry Potter Speaks Out at Last:
The Truth About He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named
and the Night We Saw Him Return
"That must be why you're getting letters! He did the interview and you were obviously in it!" Pansy smiled. I'm really not sure that this is a good thing. It's good and bad I suppose; good because the whole world now believes I'm fighting against my father and bad because I'm not sure he wanted the world to know he was actually back.
"What is going on here?" asked a voice I hate terribly. I looked up to see Umbridge looking at all the letters and I scowled.
"These idiots believe Potter; I wasn't a part of this," I said. I remembered I had to get her on my side so the Ministry trusted me, or at the very least, Umbridge.
"I don't understand," she said.
"Potter did an interview," I said, signing the Quibbler and sending it back to Claudette.
"Wait a second... he named all the Death Eaters that were there," Draco said, grabbing my arm tightly and I winced. Umbridge had already started walking over to Potter, so it was safe to continue the conversation.
"Okay?" I said, not really understanding.
"He listed my father," Draco said between clenched teeth and the five of us gasped. That must mean he mentioned Crabbe and Goyle's father's as well. Bloody hell Potter, make matters worse for us, will you? I stood up and walked over to the Gryffindor table. I sat down next to Potter and leaned in closer.
"Why did you do this?" I asked and the others were smiling at me and congratulating me.
"So people knew the truth, don't you want that?" he asked in confusion.
"Of course, but I also don't want my father pissed at me!" I hissed.
"Oh my God...I didn't even think about that. Yeah, I suppose you see him since you're a spy for us and also a death eater... I am so sorry!" he apologized.
"It's okay...but ugh Harry listing the Death Eaters? He's going to murder me," I groaned.
"Or is Malfoy just angry?" Potter muttered, but I heard him.
"I'll see you later," I glared and he looked apologetic.
"We can't change what happened," I sighed, sitting back down at the Slytherin table.
"Of course not," Blaise agreed, and we left to go to our first class.
By the time lunch was over and we were about to start our next class, there was a new Educational Decree.
Any student found in possession of the magazine 'The Quibbler' will be expelled.
"Leah we believe you!" groups of people would call to me.
"I believe you," Seamus smiled, hugging me.
"I apologize for not trusting you," Cho nodded to me, and I was surprised she spoke to me.
"Good job, Leah," Neville said to me. I was asked to sign copies of the Quibbler, and often they would be disguised as other reading material, seeing as they were banned. Near dinner, however, I had to put a hold on my new celebrity status because low and behold, father was calling me. I walked down to Severus's office and he looked up from his own copy of 'The Quibbler'.
"Wow," I raised my eyebrows.
"I just want to annoy Umbridge," he said casually and I smiled.
"Don't we all?" I asked.
"Father's calling," I said, and he nodded, giving me Floo Powder.
I walked into the Malfoy's and looked around with a smile. I was actually feeling pretty good. This could ruin our plans and yet, I liked that people had faith in me. They were relying on me to save their lives...however I was fighting for the exact opposite.
"Leah," father said, walking in and bringing me out of my thoughts.
"Hello," I said.
"I see people now believe Potter," he said with a cold look.
"I had nothing to do with it," I said.
"You are absolutely beaming," he narrowed his eyes.
"I know...I just like that people trust me. It means I can fool them much easier," I lied and he gave me a smile.
"That is very true," he nodded.
"The first letter I got said that she hopes I can save the wizarding world and another said I was an icon. It's actually amazing how easily they'll trust someone," I said.
"You're enjoying this, aren't you?" father asked, but he wasn't angry, only....disappointed.
"It's kind of cool to have people believe in me instead of fear me," I admitted, casting my gaze to the floor. Father was silent and I felt his gaze burning into my head.
"It is all an act. You are to destroy exactly what they want you to save, you are well aware of this?" he finally asked.
"Oh, of course!" I said in surprise and he sighed.
"Alright then," he said in satisfaction, and my gaze flickered to the stairs when I saw movement.
"Mother," I said breathlessly. I ran over to her and hugged her tightly, feeling her sobs as if they were my own.
"I forgive you mum, I really do. I've missed you," I whispered.
"Oh sweetie, I missed you too," she cried, tightening her hold on me.
"Katie, let her go. We have things to discuss," father said in exasperation.
"You hush, I'm hugging my daughter!" she said, stroking my hair.
"No mum, really, we'll catch up later. I have to take care of certain things," I said and she narrowed her eyes at father.
"Is she on some dangerous mission?" she asked sharply.
"Yes," we said together and she protested as we walked away.
"Leah we've figured out how to lure Potter to the Ministry if needed. I'm going to plant a vision in both of your heads in which Sirius Black is being tortured. If we chose to go with that plan, we'll let things play out on their own, but the end result will have to be you coming to the manor so we can get to the Ministry."
"We aren't positive we're going to use this plan though, correct?" I asked.
"Yes, we are trying to come up with a different plan that does not require any of you going to the Ministry," father nodded. There was a loud crack around us and I looked around to see Rookwood bowing to us.
"My Lord, My Lady," he said.
"Rookwood, what brings you here?" I asked and father gave him a look.
"Yes, indeed what does bring you here?" he asked.
"I have news M'Lord," he said.
"Do tell," I smirked.
"Not anyone can get the prophecies," Rookwood said and I snorted.
"I figured that out weeks ago," I said and father shook his head.
"No, no, Avery contradicted you. He was positive we could get it," father frowned.
"I have been badly advised, it seems," father said, sounding angry.
"Well I will be killing Avery," I said casually.
"Master, I crave your pardon," Rookwood said, kneeling.
"You have my pardon," I said, putting my hand out for a high five. Rookwood started to smile but when father gave us both a look I put my hand down slowly.
"I do not blame you, Rookwood," father said.
"Why would you?" I agreed.
"You are sure of your facts, Rookwood?" father asked, looking over at me with a look that could kill. I gave him a look back and flipped my hair in agitation.
"Yes, My Lord, yes... I used to work in the department after- after all..." Rookwood said, looking between us.
"That's very true," I murmured and father nodded slightly, but still looked angry.
"Avery told me Bode would be able to remove it."
"Bode could have never taken it, Master... Bode would have known he could not...undoubtedly that is why he fought so hard against Malfoy's Imperius curse."
"Stand up, Rookwood," father said, and he scrambled to his feet.
"You have done well to tell me this. Very well...I have wasted months on fruitless schemes it, it seems... but no matter we begin again, from now. You have Lord Voldemort's gratitude, Rookwood."
"As well as mine," I said and Rookwood smiled greatly.
"My Lord, yes...My Lady," he bowed to us.
"I shall need your help. I shall need all the information you can give me."
"Of course, My Lord, of course...anything!"
"Very well, you may go. Send Avery to my daughter," father said and I beamed as Rookwood ran off.
"You're letting me handle this on my own?" I asked.
"Indeed, it is time you learn, but when I am doing my interrogation I do not want you to handle things so lightly," he said and I sighed.
"I just want to be in on the action. I know it's important to plan, but I want to do something! If interrogation is the only thing at the time, then I'll take it!" I said exasperatedly.
"All in good time, daughter," he put a hand to my shoulder and then walked off. I sighed and walked over to a mirror, bracing my hands on the table and looking at my reflection. Between school work and my mission, I've started to look like a hot mess. My eyes looked like lava, my hair turned a pretty silver, and my face was pale. I didn't look hideous, god no, but I was... stressed. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, relaxing my shoulders.
"My lady?" a voice asked, and I turned to see Avery bowing nervously at the door.
"Ah, Avery," I gave him a silky smile.
"You called for me?" he asked.
"I did indeed. How've you been?" I asked, walking over with a smile on my lips, but a dangerous look in my eyes.
"Alright, my Lady," he said.
"Brilliant...now Rookwood has just told me something interesting," I said, putting a hand to his shoulder and I felt him tremble.
"You see, he's told me that not just anyone can retrieve the prophecies," I said and he gave a slight whimper.
"But Avery...I had said that exact same thing months ago. Yet....father was informed differently. He said that someone contradicted me; doubted my intelligence," I said and Avery fell to his knees.
"Please my Lady, I beg your forgiveness. I believed otherwise!" he cried, his voice shaking.
"Oh, it was you?" I asked with false surprise in my tone, "I believed it to be Macnair! Well if you're here to confess I suppose I shouldn't reward you for being loyal, should I?" I said, and my voice went cold.
"Tell me why you would contradict me, Avery," I said, glaring down at him.
"I was misinformed," he whimpered.
"Oh were you? It seems however, that when your master says otherwise, you should do well to believe her!" I snapped.
"Please, I beg of you," he said and I gave a cold laugh.
"You beg of me? To do what exactly? Hex you? Oh gladly," I said, bringing out my wand.
"Crucio!" I said and he fell to the ground in agony. I gripped the wand tightly and watched with a smirk as he twisted and clawed at the floor.
"My Lady," he sobbed and I intensified it so his screams grew louder. I cut off the curse quickly and drew him to his feet.
"So Avery, will you ever contradict me again?" I asked quietly yet dangerously.
"No My Lady, never," he shook his head.
"Get out of my sight," I spat, throwing him to the floor angrily and he limped off.
"Very nice," father said, emerging from the shadows.
"Did you ever actually leave this room?" I raised my eyebrows and he smiled.
"No, I wanted to see how you handled it," he said.
"I handled it like a Riddle," I smiled, and though I felt father's pride, there was also something deep inside that just felt wrong.
***
"So your father let you handle interrogation of your own?" mum asked, sitting with me in my room at the Manor.
"Yes," I nodded after telling her everything that's happened since she's been gone.
"Oh my, I do wish he wouldn't involve you so much," mum bit her lip.
"He's training me to take over, mother. One day I'll be old enough to do the things that he does," I said.
"Are you happy, Leah?" mum asked, taking my hands and I looked at her.
"No," I whispered, "no I'm not happy. I don't know if this is what I want anymore."
"You should talk to your father then," she said and I looked at her in bewilderment.
"Are you absolutely bonkers?" I asked.
"Well darling, I don't want you to be sucked into this," she said and I shook my head.
"It's my destiny. This is what I'm meant to do," I said with certainty.
"Darling, you can change that. Your life is what you make it; besides, you haven't heard that prophecy yet," mum said gently.
"That prophecy only says how I can be used as a weapon of mass destruction," I said.
"You never know, Leah," she said.
"Yes mother, I do know! My future is set and there's nothing I can do about it! Whether I wanted to change things or not, I can't..." I said and there was a knock at the door.
"It is time to get back to school," Severus said, eyeing me up, and I just knew he heard our conversation. I stood up and hugged mother before following Severus out of the room and downstairs. We walked into the fireplace without a word, and once we reached his office, I grabbed his arm.
"Severus, please don't tell father," I said and he looked down at me.
"Tell him what? That his daughter doesn't want to follow in his footsteps and she wants to become part of the Potter gang? I don't believe that'd go over very well," he said and I felt tears form in my eyes.
"I don't want to disappoint him. I'll do what he wants I just won't like it," I said and Severus drew me into a hug.
"You can trust me with your little secret, Leah. Not everyone is always what they seem," he said and I cried, hugging him back.
"Thank you," I said, and he didn't say a word.
"You know you're like the normal dad I never had," I mumbled into his robes and I heard him laugh quietly.
"I know," he said and when I pulled back to go to my dorm, I saw the slightest smile on his face and the faintest tear in his eye.
***
With Umbridge as headmaster, things have been much harder on the other students. As for my friends and their weirdness...well that increased to an all-time high. They agreed to hang out in Hogsmead as a group at the Three Broomsticks, but when Draco and I got there, it was just us. There was a table set up and everything as if it were a date. I admit, we've been hanging out a lot more often and I sort of like it, but that was just bizarre. Tonight, the eight of us, including Sapphire and Damon, are supposed to be hanging out. On the other hand, O.W.L's are coming up, and I'd really rather be studying. I also have to be ready to go to the Ministry because that is officially our plan; I was even taught how to travel as a black vapor.
"Leah, come on," Pansy said, bringing me away from my homework and I sighed. It was May and if I don't get in last minute studying, I'm doomed.
"If I get any less than all O's on my exams, I'm killing you," I said and she smirked. We walked up into our dorm room where everyone else was and they all smiled.
"There she is!" Ariana laughed.
"Oh joy," Thane teased.
"Sit down, we're playing spin the bottle," Sapphire said excitedly and I twisted my hands.
"Guys, I'd rather go study," I said. That and go over the plans for the Ministry.
"Too bad," Blaise pulled me down next to him. I was between Ariana and Blaise, and across from Draco. Next to Ariana was Pansy, and next to Blaise was Sapphire. In between Draco and Pansy sat Damon, and in between Draco and Sapphire was Thane.
"Blaise, spin," Ariana ordered and then it landed on Ariana herself.
"Oh Jesus," Pansy muttered and they kissed quickly.
"Why exactly are we doing this when we're all dating someone? Well except for Leah, Draco, Damon, and Sapphire," Thane smiled.
"Ariana, your turn," Blaise said, and she got Damon.
"What happens if I get a girl?" I asked.
"Then you kiss a girl, don't be a pussy," Pansy teased.
"Damon spin," I waved my hand, and surprise, he got me.
"Aw, give me some love," I teased and he just kissed my cheek.
"What?" Thane laughed.
"We grew up as cousins, that's weird," he said and I nodded.
"Spin it Leah," Ariana ordered, and they watched in anticipation, which made me frown. I spun the bottle and watched as it landed on Draco. I looked up slowly and we met eyes. I stood up abruptly.
"I have to study!" I said quickly and Blaise pulled me down forcefully.
"Kiss him now," he said firmly and we slowly leaned in self-consciously. I really didn't want to do this. Not because I don't want to kiss Draco, I'm just not ready for it.
I suppose the kiss was meant to be quick, but nope. Once our lips met it's like we melted together once again. I felt so...happy. I had felt like something was missing almost all year, and this...this almost made up for it. I pulled away and we just stared at each other before I ran downstairs, gathered my things and went into my dorm.
***
"Oh my God it's almost time for O.W.L's," I stressed as we pulled out our books. It was almost two weeks after that spin the bottle stunt, and I felt nervous as ever around Draco. It's a good thing he was up in his room. Pansy pulled out her books along with Ariana, whose possessions clattered to the floor. She groaned in frustration and then sighed.
"I'll be right back to clean this up," she said and I bent down to start cleaning the papers up. I saw essays and homework by the hundreds, but one thing in particular caught my eye.
"'The Dreah Initiative'?" I muttered, scanning the paper.
"Month one, get him to notice her. Month two, alone time. Month three, group dates. Month four, the date. Month five, the kiss," I read out loud and I saw Pansy, Blaise, and Thane sink lower into their chairs.
"What is this?" I asked and they all shrugged quickly.
"I don't know," Pansy said.
"Never seen it," Blaise agreed.
"Dreah?" Thane raised his eyebrows.
"Crap," I heard Ariana said from the stairs.
"Let me guess, Dreah means Draco and Leah?" I raised my eyebrows.
"Well..." she said uncomfortably.
"You had a five month plan for this? Is this why you were all acting so weird? Oh, and let's not forget that stunt you pulled a few weeks ago," I said, laughing without humor.
"Do not pretend like all of you didn't know," I said to them and they looked guilty. I grabbed the list and made my way upstairs and into the boys dorm.
"Whoa there," Montague said and I glared.
"Out," I pointed.
"Everything okay?" Draco asked.
"Possibly; now get out Montague. You too Crabbe," I narrowed my eyes and they left quickly.
"Look at this," I shoved the parchment into his hands. He looked over the parchment and then looked up at me with his eyebrows raised.
"What is this?" he asked.
"Something our friends decided to do," I crossed my arms.
"Dreah?"
"Draco and Leah," I clarified.
"Oh my wizard God," he said, finally understanding.
"Were you in on this?" I asked with a frown.
"No, were you?" he asked.
"Nope," I shook my head.
"I didn't think so," he nodded, and then we grew silent. We hadn't talked very much since the stunt they pulled and I sighed.
"Well I suppose they were only trying to help," I said.
"They must've had this planned for almost six months. So on Valentines Day, Ariana and Thane weren't actually interested in going on a date?" Draco said.
"No...that must've been month two so I guess they wanted to give us 'alone time'," I rolled my eyes.
"Well that explains the sudden less-than-friendly vibe going on between those two. I expected them to be dating...but it was all an act," he nodded.
"Exactly, and that date they set up wasn't just forgetfulness," I said.
"They had that planned," he nodded.
"This is ridiculous!" I sighed in exasperation.
"They just wanted to see us back together," Draco tried reasoning.
"Well...they just don't...I mean...do you want to be back together?" I asked and he looked at me for a while.
"Do you?"
***
"You know what Draco, fine!" I yelled, slamming the dorm room closed behind me. I heard it swing back open and his footsteps followed mine.
"I wasn't done talking to you!" he yelled.
"Well I'm done talking to you!"
"Just admit it!"
"Admit what?"
"That you were a part of this! I cannot believe after I said I needed space that you'd pull a stunt like this!" he said and we stormed into the common room where our little friends were sitting, wide eyed.
"I didn't do it!" I screamed, spinning around to face him.
"I don't believe you! All you ever do is lie to get your way!"
"That isn't true!" I yelled and he scoffed.
"Oh yes, yes it is," he said.
"I hate you!" I screamed and the common room fell silent.
"Should we tell them then?" Draco asked, staring at me emotionlessly.
"Fine," I snapped.
"We're back together," he finally smiled and I did too. The common room was gaping at us as Draco took my hand and we looked at each other.
"I hate you so much!" Pansy yelled, running over and hugging me to death.
"Ah!" she screamed in excitement and then hugged Draco. Ariana was practically jumping up and down with excitement.
"Oh my God I knew it would work!" she was crying.
"Jesus I thought they were going to kill each other," Blaise smiled at Thane, and Thane laughed.
"I was quite amused," he smirked.
"I'm sure," I rolled my eyes.
"Look at her, she's beaming," Pansy teased.
"So is he," Ariana smirked.
"They're together?" Sapphire perked up from her book.
"Yes," the four said together and she screamed in excitement, hugging me tightly.
"Go tell mother right now!" Pansy started pushing me but I kept hold of Draco's hand when he started letting go.
"No, come on," I said to him and we went down to Severus's office.
"Sev!" I smiled and he looked at the two of us.
"Are you alright?" he asked and I laughed.
"Yes!" I said and he raised his eyebrows at me.
"She's laughing...you two are back together," he said and we nodded.
"Oh God," Severus shook his head and I smirked.
"I'm going to see father!" I announced and we used Floo Powder.
"There she is," Bella smiled, walking in.
"How are you feeling?" she asked.
"Stressed because of O.W.L's and my mission," I said and she smacked my arm.
"Hush!" she looked at Draco and I rolled my eyes.
"He knows," I said.
"Leah, you aren't supposed to tell anyone outside of the circle! He isn't in the circle anymore," she said carefully.
"Yes he is," I said.
"No, he has to be dating someone in the circle," she said and I gave her a smug smile.
"No..." she said and I nodded.
"Oh this is great!" she said happily and father walked in.
"What's great?" father asked.
"Did you kill someone I don't like?" father asked and I laughed.
"No, no I did not," I shook my head.
"Well then I don't care," he said dismissively and I frowned.
"Thanks," I said sarcastically.
"Tom," mum said sternly, walking downstairs.
"You cannot talk to her like that," she said.
"It's tough love," he said.
"You're going to make her suicidal again," she glared.
"That was not my doing," he argued.
"So Draco and I are back together," I said casually, but they continued arguing.
"I don't care, she's delicate."
"She isn't delicate, she's a Death Eater!"
"She's a teenage girl! Not to mention she's your daughter!" mum retorted. I could probably say anything right now.
"I'm shagging Harry Potter," I said and they both looked at me. Guess not.
"Excuse me?" father asked.
"Yeah," I said, sitting down.
"No you are not," he glared and Draco was trying to hide a laugh.
"Yeah, you did say to get close to him. How much closer can I get?" I smiled and father looked outraged.
"I was joking," I rolled my eyes.
"Besides, Potter's shagging Cho," Draco said lazily.
"Oh not anymore! After Valentine's Day, things fell to hell," I said excitedly and he laughed.
"You're not serious?" he asked.
"Oh it's brilliant," I laughed.
"What...?" mum frowned and I dropped my smile.
"If you two would stop fighting over me, you would've heard what I said," I said coolly.
"Alright darling, what did you say?" father sighed.
"Draco and I are back together."
"Oh my God!" mum smiled, clasping her hands together.
"Lovely," father said, but I could tell he didn't really mean it. That brings us back to Severus being the normal father I've never really had.
"You could value my happiness a little more," I glared and father sighed.
"Darling, I'm not paying attention to anyone's happiness; I'm trying to get this Ministry break in, in order," he said and I frowned.
"Fine," I muttered.
"Tom," mum hissed and he threw her a cool glare before sitting with me.
"I am genuinely happy for you, okay? Congratulations," father said, and he sounded quite sincere, so I smiled.
"Thanks," I said.
"Now, I do have to tell you that I will be calling you any day now. You'll know when to come though, seeing as you'll see the vision," father said.
"Okay," I nodded.
"Oh, and Leah; good luck on your O.W.L's," father smiled slightly and I nodded.
"Thank you," I said.
"Yes, and you too Draco," mum said, kissing both of us on the forehead.
"Mother," I glared and she smiled.
"Oh hush," she said, "don't make me hex you."
"That reminds me! How do you get rid of a bat bogey hex?" I turned to Draco and he shrugged.
"Oh God you are no help!" I said frantically.
"We have to go!" I said, freaking out.
"Relax," he said, lounging back in his chair.
"Hah, no! I'm going to fail my O.W.L's! Oh and what's that thing...oh God! The counter curses to, uh, that...oh we need to go! I need my school books!" I said, pulling Draco off his chair and going back to school. I'm studying for the rest of my life.
