Chapter 6 ( A blur of the past)

Steven's P.O.V.

The next morning, I woke up pretty early and drank a nice hot cup of coffee. The gems noticed that I wasn't up and about at my usual time and questioned me.

Pearl: Steven, your up early.

Steven: Something came up, I have to go ask dad something so I'll be at the car wash.

I said before bolting out of the door. I hurried over to the car wash and peered around at Beach City. Reaching into my pocket, I took out the crumbled up plastic bag that read (Y/n)'s Beach Side Bakery. Beach City already looked pretty tight and it seemed unlikely that at one time we had a bakery. However, maybe this was another bakery from another town but I wanted to be sure. I wanted to know how Lapis found out about the place.

Dad was in Beach City longer than I was so he would know. I looked in the distance and saw he had just finished washing Mayor Dewey's campaign truck as it zoomed away leaving a light cloud of dirt and sand behind it. He saw me as I neared I neared him.

Greg: Steven I didn't expect you to be up so early.

Steven: Hey dad, I just wanted to clear something up. Do you know what this is?

I said as I held up the crumpled up plastic bag.

Greg: Um...a plastic bag?

Steven: Look closer.

Greg: Hmmmm, (Y/n)'s Beach Side Bakery....

Dad read aloud.

Greg: That was years ago Steven. That placed closed down before you were born...well the guy sold it.

Steven: Who is (Y/n) though? I think Lapis knows him, that's how she got this bag. She brought us pie the other night.

Greg: Yeah, the guy is still around but he lives off the land and stuff. He was a good baker and still is. I admit that and Lapis did run into him the other day. She wanted to talk about him. She didn't understand what was wrong with him.

Steven: What's wrong with him?

Greg: He's blind. He's been that way since he was born.

Steven: Blind? That must be horrible. He doesn't even know what color is. I feel so bad for him, how can he fully experience the world?

Greg: He had come to terms with his blindness a long time ago. It doesn't bother him, besides he can get around really well without seeing. It's really impressive.

Steven: But what if I can heal him like I did Connie. I have healing spit, remember?

Greg: Yeah, but what if it doesn't work and if it does who's to say he'll even want that or let you? (Y/n) had always been distance and never really liked getting help from others. Guys like him don't have friends, he doesn't like people.

Steven: But what about Lapis?

Greg: If anything, Lapis ran into him on accident and (Y/n) is most likely trying to make her go away but Lapis seemed curious about him. In fact she wasn't the first gem to run into (Y/n). The first was Rose and she was curious about him too.

Steven: Mom knew the baker?

Greg: Well...sort of. I remember when the place first opened, (Y/n)'s Beach Side Bakery was the only bakery in town and it was a hit. I went in for the first time to try one of his goods and Rose came with me. Once she found out he was blind, her curiosity sky rocketed.

Flashback......

Greg's P.O.V.

Rose: A bakery?

Greg: Yeah, it opened this morning, I thought we could go try a pie or something.

Rose: Sure, I don't mind.

She said before we walked towards the bakery. it sat next to the Frymans own restaurant and there was already a huge line. Even Vidalia had managed to get in and was already coming out with her order.

Rose: Wow this place is really popular.

Greg: I know and it hasn't even been open long?

I said excitedly. I couldn't wait to try something, I had a real sweet tooth but after 2 hours of waiting in line, my enthusiasm was beginning to wear out before our turn had finally came.  Rose followed me in but I was disappointed when I didn't see the baker anywhere in sight. I figured he was in the back of the shop but fortunately, we had the place all to ourselves. Looking around, this place had a nice cozy ambiance to it and a great smell.

Rose was messing around with a classical jukebox in the far corner of the bakery. I was actually surprised the baker had the taste for something like that. It played some really classical hits and I was jamming to the music but then the backdoor to the bakery opened to reveal the baker in front of the counter that held already baked pastries. On first glance, he looked like a pretty ok guy. I wouldn't be surprised if girls just came in here just to look at him. I had thought that he was blind because of his shades but maybe he was just one of those people that just liked to wear shades inside.

(Y/n): Hey, who's messing with my jukebox?

He said annoyingly as he adjusted the shades on his face.

Greg: Sorry, about that.

I apologized for Rose as I walked up to the counter. I hadn't noticed how short I was compared to him, I could barely see over the counter while Rose towered over it.

Greg: I would like one of your apple pies and a blueberry scone.

(Y/n): Of course you would....

He had his arms folded, like he had already knew what I was going to order. He bent down, grabbing a smooth white box with his shops name and logo on it. Picking up some tongs he grabbed a scone, wrapped it and boxed up my pie like a nice Christmas present before handing it over. He told me the price and I paid for the pastries. I turned around and was almost halfway out of the door before I noticed Rose wasn't behind me. Looking back, I saw she was still at the counter, starring starry eyed at the baker.

(Y/n): Lady, your still here? -_-

He said in a bored expression.

Rose: I feel like something's amiss with you. Why are you wearing those glasses, I've never seen a human wear the kind you have.

Rose said as she inched her hands towards his face, trying to remove his glasses. On instinct the baker felt her fingers brush across his face and instinctively brought up his own hand to slap hers away. His hand accidentally bumped his glasses off of his face making them tumble over the counter  in front of Rose and they hit the ground in a way that caused one of the lenses to break.

Looking back at his face, it appeared he was looking back at us but his eyes never moved. His sight was completely gone and it left his eyes an abnormal white color with a permanent blank stare.

Rose had then bent down to pick up his glasses.

Rose: Y-your eyes?

(Y/n): Yeah, I'm blind, so what?

He said before he snatched his glasses away from her and disappeared to the back of the bakery.
