Chapter 13 | L's chip
The morning routine was something L was an expert at now. He woke up at the exact time you'd tell him too, wake you up and then you'd pack away the futon to make room for the day's activities. Make some breakfast, get dressed for the day and it was off with whatever you had planned.
So by now, L didn't even have to be told what to do, he already knew what to do. Although todays morning routine got a little off track, because once L had picked his usual outfit for the day and shed of his pyjamas he noticed something.
As he stepped one foot into the leg of his jeans, he stopped mid task to examine the slight chip on the inner side of his left thigh. The opposite to where his power button was on his right. It was small, but it was big enough he noticed it. Instead of his soft skin, there was a tiny chip that exposed the waterproof lining his inner mechanics were coated with. He hadn't noticed it before, it was usually covered by by his clothes.
He didn't have any data on getting the chip, he couldn't remember it happening at all.
Fearing he might be broken, he wandered over to you jeans in his hand and tugged on your shirt.
"What's up L- uh... you can't really go out in only boxers honey" you said, turning to face him.
"L is broken" he replied.
"Broken? What do you mean, what happened?"
You panicked slightly, thinking maybe something inside him was malfunctioning. But when he pointed to the small chip, you were relieved to see it wasn't that serious.
"Oh, it's only a small chip. Let me see" you said.
You had him sit on the counter, so you could take a closer look at the chip. It was no bigger than a coin, and no damage was done to the waterproof lining so you didn't see anything wrong with it. It was just a small patch of skin that was missing. Like when a human gets a scrape from tripping over.
"It's nothing bad, just a small scratch. Although I don't know how you would have gotten it, it's under your clothes most of the time" you said.
"L has no data of any damage" L replied.
"Hm... maybe you got it before I found you. Maybe... hang on..."
It dawned on you when you remembered looking at his thigh yesterday for any remnants of a logo on him. This chip was in the same spot the logo would have been... just on the other thigh.
The chobits logo in the picture of the persacoms Near sent you was big bold letting that cantered on the outer thigh but stretched over the thigh into the inner part. The chip was right where the tip of the C would be.
"Maybe you aren't the one in the picture, but you are a chobit and just a different one from the image" you muttered, looking along the rest of his leg for any more chips or seams.
If the logo had been removed by replacing the skin it was on, it would probably leave a very thin seam where the cut was made, unless the person who did it was such an expert they didn't leave a seam behind. You couldn't see a seam, but the chip was evidence that the skin had been tampered with at some point.
"Maybe we should see Near today, he might be able to find something I don't know about" you suggested.
"L would like to see Near! And Matt and Mello" L agreed.
"Alright then, finish getting ready and we can swing by"
Once dressed and ready for the day, you locked your and headed out to see the persacom expert himself. You were rather cautious being out with L now, after he was kidnapped for being such a detailed custom you were weary of who was around you. He could fight now, he'd learnt martial arts with books, his AI, and videos. But it still worried you someone might try and take him again. So you kept him close, holding his hand the whole way there. Ringing on the doorbell, it was the blonde girl persacoms that answered it this time. Linda you recalled her being called.
"Oh! You're (y/n) and L! What brings you here?" She smiled.
Her hair was tied back into low pigtails, she wore a school style dress with Mary Janes and frilly socks. A few paint stains splattered on her clothes from all the art she'd been programmed to do. Her ear ports were painted pink and white, matching her hair ties.
"We have some questions about L, we think Near might be able to help" you replied.
"I see, he's in the study. Right this way!" Linda said.
She lead you through the long hallways into a room at the end of the second story hall, inside being several computers and bookshelves full of tech books. Matt was plugged into a computer seemingly hacking something and Near had a persacom you hadn't seen hung up and their inner computer exposed.
"Near! We have guests!" Linda said.
He looked up, not expecting your sudden visit and seeming a bit surprised.
"Oh, (y/n), L what brings you here?" He asked.
"Sorry for showing up unannounced but we noticed something and I think it might point to L being a chobit" you said.
That definitely got his attention, he put his tools down and pushed the persacoms he was working on to the side for the time being. The persacom he was working on had brown hair, freckles on their cheeks and their ear ports were a green and white mix. They wore only shorts as their chest was open and the computer inside them being repaired. This must be A, the one that malfunctioned and was being fixed.
You sat L on the chair by the desk, and pulled the leg of his pants up to expose the chip on his thigh.
"Here, he noticed it this morning. He didn't get it at any point when I've had him, and it can't be from accidental damage since it's under his clothes all the time and protected. But it's in the exact same spot the chobits logo is in the picture. Just on the other leg" you explained.
Near gave the chip a look, tracing it with his finger to feel how clean the cut was. If it was jagged it was probably made my accident, but if it was precise it would be made by hand.
Usually L would reject people touching him so close to his power button, but you gave Near the ok to do so and L knew if you trusted Near then it would be ok.
"It feels too smooth to be an accidental chip... it was probably cut out at some point. It almost seems like the creator ran out of skin to use and figured a small chip that was hidden under clothes anyway wasn't in need of being covered" he explained.
Near was clearly way smarter than he looked at his small age. You didn't even THINK of looking into how smooth or rough the chip was.
"Persacom skin is strong to withstand damage and is smooth and almost squishy for realism. It's hard to cut with something blunt, it'd have to be a sharp exacto knife. So given its placement and the cleanness of the cut I doubt it's accidental damage. It must be left from when L was made" Near added.
He reached into his desk drawers and took out a magnifying glass, looking around the chip for any seams in the skin where it could have been replaced. But it seems L's skin was in perfect condition other than the small chip.
"Hmm... either the creator is just very good al sealing up seams or they cut a small chip out. I don't see why they'd cut a small chip out so I'm guessing they're just very good at sealing seams. In all honesty I think you're right..."
If the persacom expert himself agreed with your theory, then you had no doubt in your mind that L was a chobit.
He had a self learning AI.
He understood and felt emotions.
His computer was so powerful he surged a whole other persacom AND the entirety of the apartment building.
He was preprogrammed with the knowledge to not let anyone but the person HE deemed right touch him too close to his power button.
He looked almost completely real.
He had a custom skeleton and appearance.
And of course there was that strange moment where he seemed to glow and almost float when he was reading.
L had to be a chobit. He just... had to.
"Maybe he's not the one in the picture, and that one is another version of early prototype. But he is a chobit, just not that exact one" you pondered.
"I think you're right. The one in the picture isn't YOUR L. But one from the same line as L, and he's definitely a chobit. But that still doesn't tell us what's behind his password in all that data, how he works, who made him, why they made him, why they tossed him..." Near replied.
It was frustrating but so interesting. You wanted to know everything about L, why he was made, how he was made, the story behind the creation of the chobits... everything.
"I love you L, but man you're one big puzzle aren't you?" You sighed.
"Love... L?" L muttered.
You said it again. I love you.
What way did you mean that? Was L loved like a family member? A pet? A friend? A lover? He didn't know, he knew what love was but was still trying to understand how it worked. You loved L, you told him yourself.
And L loved you, he was sure he did.
But he'd never been in love before, it was new to his AI and he didn't really know how to navigate it yet.
But he knew that if you loved him, then you had to be the one just for him, right?
