Chapter 33 - The Bow of Indra

Kubja is now whole!”

“Who are these boys?”

“The dark hue of the curly haired boy is mesmerising.”

“That peacock feather on his crown makes him look even more beautiful!”

“That curly haired boy pulled Kubja up!”

The people of Mathura just could not stop talking. The two boys looked all over the city of Mathura and no matter where they went, the people kept talking.

That was when Krishna saw a grand building right in the centre of the city. Many people were outside the place as they were watching the building eagerly.

“What is inside here?” Krishna asked one of the bystanders.

“King Kamsa has organized this.” The man told the boy excitedly. “This is the great bow of Lord Indra himself - the unbreakable bow. This is meant to be used for the bow sacrifice function.” The man continued.

“Can I see it?” Krishna asked looking thrilled.

The man shrugged. “The bow is kept here to be seen by all of us. Of course we can see it.”

However, the guards of Kamsa were wary when they saw the two boys enter the room.

News had already spread all around the city about the two boys and the king was worried about the eighth son of Devaki. It took very little imagination for the guards to realize that these were the very same boys.

But they could not openly stop the boys from entering the building.

They were after all just looking around the place.

Inside the building, there was a huge bow. Built of magnificent metals and studded with ancient stones, the bow looked beautiful.

There the two boys saw a man trying to touch the bow - but it was way too heavy, for one person.

Besides even before the man could come any where close to it, the guards unceremoniously shooed the man away.

Under the bullying of the guards the man bowed to the weapon and walked away from there, angrily muttering under his breath.

Krishna looked at all this, a slight anger building up in his chest, as it was his turn to study the bow.

“I will not bow to this.” Krishna told the guard in a quiet voice.

“Why not?” The guard demanded belligerently. “This is the bow of Indra. It is for this bow that King Kamsa is going to perform his sacrifice. This is a great bow….”

The guard never completed his words, as Krishna caught the guard and pushed him back and pulled the spear from the guard - all in one single move.

The guard fell back as the other guard were astounded by the quickness and the strength of the boy.

They were about to come forward when they saw another solid punch and a bone crunching thud as they saw the other boy hit a guard - who fell down like a tree had fallen on him.

Balarama looked furious and ready for battle as he saw the other guards and studied them - waiting for them to make a move.

“I am going to break this bow.” Krishna said contemptuously as he came forward.

That was when one of the guards laughed. “You think you can break this?” The guard found the idea too amusing. He laughed even more. “Not even men in our city can lift it. What can you do, little boy?” The guard demanded as he just could not stop laughing.

Looking at their jeering colleague, the other guards also started laughing at the two boys.

Balarama and Krishna looked at each other.

Balarama caught hold of another guard and pushed him forward - the guard fell with a thud - as the other guards stopped laughing.

They were helping the fallen man get up as Krishna walked towards the bow.

Effortlessly, as if it was a twig, the dark boy lifted the bow.

The guards watched shocked as the boy lifted the bow and in one swift movement, he pulled the bow together and broke it….

The guards fell back.

The bow broke with a thunderous groan - and it made such a horrendous sound that it was heard everywhere.

***********

Kamsa, who was in his palace, a few kilometers away, was getting ready for a nervous night sleep when he heard the sound. For a second he thought that the entire world had caved in.

It was five minutes later, that Kamsa realized what the sound was. That was when the dread in his heart spread through his whole body as he was trembling in fear - Kamsa had no doubt, not one - that the bow of Indra was broken - and that it was broken by the eighth son of Devaki.

***********

“Catch those two boys.” Another guard screamed as soon as he could find his voice. “They have broken the bow of…”

The guard never completed his words. All he saw was madness and mayhem. Two boys - two little boys - just effortlessly plowed through the entire division of soldiers patrolling the building - whose only job was to keep the bow safe.

And it was literally all over for the soldiers.

In a matter of seconds, they were all unconscious.

**********

The two boys looked at the fallen guards with something less than contempt as a few minutes later, they walked out of the city of Mathura, back to the Gopas, who were waiting for them outside the the city.
