06 ➺ UGLY AS SIN
❝MY MIND'S LIKE
A DEADLY DISEASE.❞
GENEVIEVE WAS INTRIGUED, yet disgusted by humans, but the idea of only one being so utterly special made the queen curious, especially when it came to Chloe Decker — the detective was quite good at her job, or so it seemed, and she was loved by many. Detective Douche was clearly fond of the woman, and the same seemed to go for Lucifer — the latter didn't delight Genevieve in any way, though. If anything, it made the queen jealous and fueled by wrath, which led her to the LAPD where she followed Dan in the belief that he could take her to his wife. Ex-wife. It wasn't a term Genevieve liked very much, but somehow the idea of Chloe's misery was already one that she enjoyed.
"Don't hurt her", Dan warned before letting Ginny off her leash — a nonexistent one, but the man seemed to think he could control her in any way. However, the queen shot him a wild smirk along with an agreeing nod, as she didn't believe that torturing Chloe was a smart move. Not now, at least.
"Yes, that would be downright tragic, wouldn't it?", she teased Daniel, and the serious stare he offered her in return made her burst out laughing. "Relax, darling. I simply wish to meet her and see what's so special about this woman everyone keeps growing heart eyes for. Not literally, of course. That would be absurd", she shook her head then, the raven hair bouncing on her shoulders before she stepped forward and walked towards Chloe, who was sitting by her desk in the office, just finishing some paperwork regarding a case she had worked on for the day.
With a thoroughly interested look shining in her dark brown eyes, Genevieve curiously observed the woman whilst slowly seating herself on the other chair by the desk. At first, Chloe didn't even notice her, but once she gave a single glance at her direction, she found herself unable to stop looking at Genevieve who lifted her leg atop the other and let her lips curve upwards into a mischievous smile. But eventually, the doe-eyed, dazzled gaze in Chloe's eyes faded away and she cocked an eyebrow at Ginny in a rather unimpressed manner.
"Can I help you?", she wondered with an emotionless stare directed at Ginny, who couldn't help but wonder how she managed to resist the queen. The adoration in her eyes, the desire to never tear her gaze away, the need to listen to Genevieve's each word and do as she pleased... Gone. Nonexistent. Something about Chloe was different, and it made Genevieve knit her eyebrows together as she leaned closer and eyed the detective even more curiously now. She was definitely starting to see what was so wondrous about her.
"Yes....", the queen frowned, "I was hoping to meet you properly, Detective Decker. I'm—", a stuttered out introduction was about to slip from between Genevieve's painted lips, but Chloe interjected with her expression suddenly softening.
"Genevieve, right. You were here the other day. Lucifer told me about you, said you were an old friend or something like that", she nodded as she broke into a careful smile, and lifting her eyebrows whilst the confusion on her transformed into flattery, Genevieve leaned back on her seat. However, before she could say anything, Chloe had continued. "He also told me I should stay away from you. Something about dangerous and toxic", the detective explained, and although hearing that didn't please the queen in any way, she forced a grin onto her lips and rolled her eyes at the words Lucifer had described her with.
Not that he was very far from the truth, though.
"Well, Luci has always been one to exaggerate a little. But I'll admit, I do have a bit of a troublemaker in me... Then again, he does too, doesn't he?", Genevieve faked a laugh, one that was contagious enough to pull Chloe into the same state of amusement as well — except that hers was plenty more sincere than Ginny's attempt to be friendly to the woman. Even if she hated it with all the fire she had in her.
Shaking her head at the joke, Chloe leaned back from the stack of files and papers presented on her desk and allowed herself a moment of relaxation — Genevieve understood that much as Detective Decker dropped the pen between her fingers and looked back up at Ginny. "You don't seem so bad, you know", Chloe squinted her eyes at the other woman, as if trying to see the ugly side of her, but whenever she wanted to, Genevieve was quite talented at hiding it. It wasn't easy to dig up if she truly wanted to seem like the opposite, but it was always beneath the surface, trying to break free and wreak havoc.
That was who she was — scary, bad, ugly. She may have been beautiful physically, downright stunning, but deep inside, she was rotten and broken and beaten to a point of no return. And that had been the truth about her for so long, she had grown to live with, to like it.
"What can I say, Lucifer is quite the drama queen", she chuckled at the joke Chloe couldn't possibly understand.
"Right... How do you know him?", Chloe wondered then, and as her head tilted to the side in curiosity, Genevieve drew a deep inhale. Which of her many lies should she pick this time? How would she deceive the detective? Or should she, perhaps, tell her the truth and make Chloe jealous about the relationship between her and Lucifer?
Smiling innocently at Chloe, Genevieve shrugged. "We used to live in the same town for a time that felt like forever. I've known him my whole life... But people drift apart sometimes, and that happened to us — he left. Turned his back on me. It was okay for a while, but at last, I decided to follow him to this beautiful city and see what was worth leaving everything we had in our former home. I hear his mother is back too, huh?", the queen crossed her arms, finding peace and comfort in the words leaving her mouth. She wasn't exactly lying, but she was leaving out the crucial parts — like her being the Shedevil, created in the flames of Hell just to marry Lucifer and rule the Underworld with him.
With a nod, Chloe took in everything Genevieve told her, and then offered a shrug of her own. "Yeah, so he's been saying. I haven't met her, but... Lucifer seems to be really upset about it. Anyway, that must be hard. Him just leaving like that...", the woman sighed, and at this, Genevieve's eyes widened. At last, someone understood. Well, granted, there was much that Chloe did not understand or know, but nonetheless, her words left a smile on the queen's red lips. Until she continued with, "I know a little something about drifting apart myself", a sigh leaving her lips, "I think it's time Dan and I get a divorce. Sometimes marriage just doesn't work out, I guess."
"I suppose so", Genevieve pursed her lips as a sarcastic smile spread out, but she had no intentions to tell the reason behind it. However, it did take her plenty of strength to suffocate the desire to yell at Chloe, tell her to keep on fighting, argue that she was giving up.
She, for sure, wasn't going to give up. And she was not going to claim the title of an ex-wife.
—————
CHLOE AND GENEVIEVE didn't get to talk much more when the detective insisted on finishing up what little paperwork she had left, and the queen found herself quite disinterested in carrying on the conversation, anyway. Therefore, she left the station and the people in it behind her, the click of her high heels following her as she walked back outside.
She was met by nightfall as she stepped outside into the warm air that caused her to sigh in some kind of odd, momentary comfort. There was silence all over the streets, but she intended to change that — now that Genevieve had met the famous Chloe Decker, she wanted to meet Charlotte Richards. Or Mom, the Divine Goddess, the ex-wife of God. Ugh — why was the ex-wife theme so strong nowadays? Genevieve despised it, almost as much as she hated Lucifer's mother, yet she couldn't help but feel excitement just through the mere idea of seeing her again. The two had clashed in quite the epic manner back in Hell, and Ginny had done her fair share of torturing and made sure Mom knew who was the queen of Hell — therefore, the two weren't on the best of terms, and that was just how Genevieve liked it.
She wanted the pleasure of torment, and the thought of tormenting Mom even more was just thrilling.
Genevieve found the goddess on a dark street, standing by a body that looked very much dead — which was confirmed by the stains of blood splattered onto the wall behind the lifeless man lying on the cold, hard ground. The sight was amusing to the Shedevil, with Mom looking down at her trembling hands, which had managed to throw the stranger into the wall and kill him in the process.
"Feels just exhilarating, doesn't it?", the queen teased, causing Charlotte to jump at the sudden words spoken behind her. "The power... Knowing you, you caused this", she kicked the dead body with her heel, "and imagining what else you could possibly do", before looking up at the shocked woman, with her usual grin twisting her lips upwards. Charlotte met her intrigued gaze with a less amused stare of profound surprise and horror shining in her own eyes. For a moment, the goddess seemed rather ovewhelmed due to what she had done, and even more confused by the woman who had joined her on the dark street, but it didn't take her long to put the pieces together and recognize her.
"Genevieve", Mom acknowledged with the demon's name leaving her lips in quite the bitter, unhappy manner. The negative response her arrival caused made Ginny chuckle — she didn't allow disrespect, but her feelings weren't that easy to hurt either. Or at least so she claimed.
"Luci told you, huh? Should have known — he didn't seem very happy about me coming to his precious little Earth. I cannot understand why that is, I mean, what's not to like?", Genevieve laughed confidently as her hands gestured to the flawless body she had inhabited, covered in black leather. However, Charlotte didn't seem to take the situation so lightly, and especially at the mention of her son, she grew visibly tense and uncomfortable. This earned a snort from the Shedevil, who rolled her eyes at the panic spreading out in Mom. "Don't worry, I'll keep your dirty little secret. What's wrong with a little trouble?", the queen continued, and with slow steps, she approached Charlotte whilst her teeth bit down to her tongue and her eyes flickered with childish excitement.
Only then Mom seemed to remember who exactly she was dealing with, and it made her react by warily stepping away from Genevieve whose eyes widened at the sudden jump. "What do you want?", the Supreme Goddess questioned with her eyes squinting at Ginny, who couldn't help but scoff and roll her eyes at the boring reaction she was drawing out of the woman.
"I simply needed to see the legendary goddess with my own two eyes. What a coincidence, the both of us coming here, don't you think?", Genevieve wondered out loud and as her tongue danced across her bottom lip, it was Mom's turn to roll her eyes and readjust the purse slipping down her arm.
"I want nothing to do with you, demon", she replied immediately, disappointing Ginny. "Everyone and everything around you dies. I want to be reunited with my family, be with my children. But you? You'd just ruin everything. Everything you touch, falls apart. The air you breathe becomes toxic. You will never lure me into one of your traps, Genevieve, because you only care about yourself and anyone who makes the mistake of getting involved with you will regret it for the rest of the lives that you won't hesitate to end", Charlotte shot an ice cold stare at the queen, and for a moment, it managed to feel like a thorn in her flesh, annoying and hurting her.
But despite her cold, harsh words — which resembled more truth than lies — Genevieve broke into loud laughter and filled the silent, thick air in the dark night with her childish giggles. "You think I care? I don't. You can say whatever you want to — I don't seek anyone's approval. I don't care if you try to hurt me. You can't kill the Killer Queen", the laughter didn't seem to fade away, it just crinkled Ginny's eyes and made her clap her hands together as she leaned forward and shook her head at Mom. However, the goddess did have something to fire back with.
"Oh, you naive, pathetic little child. Everyone can be killed, and I just so happen to know your weakness. Maybe I even brought it with me from Hell", Charlotte broke into a grin, and at last, Genevieve's amused grin faded into nothingness. She turned serious, with anger twisting her features into something to fear and run away from, and as she stepped closer to Mom, her eyes gained a devilish, red tint in them and a growl rose from her throat.
"You wretched bitch. Where is it?", Genevieve formed a ball of red magic on the palm of her hand, and with her eyes widening, Mom stepped back but didn't allow the smirk on her lips to falter.
It was always like this between the two — fury, constant fighting, endlessly trying to prove themselves superior to the other with new surprises and twists always waiting ahead. Simply put, they hated each other.
"I said maybe, didn't I? And if I did happen to have it, why would I tell you?", Charlotte laughed, and with that, she stepped away, "it was a complete displeasure seeing you, Genevieve. I hope I never have to do so again."
And then, drowned by the frustration in her, Genevieve could only stand there and look as the goddess strutted away from her, disappearing into the shadows of the night and leaving behind a dead man and a very shaken Shedevil.
Genevieve wanted to tell herself that she was perfectly okay, that there was no worry in sight, but a strange weight dropped itself onto her black, dead heart like an anvil and it was almost painful. She didn't understand it, but the way her confidence and pride was being dragged down by the stirring feelings in her tightening chest was just awful. And frankly, the only solution she could think of was going to someone who could make the feelings disappear.
Dr. Linda Martin.
